      **Would greatly appreciate a response** I've really wanted to try one of the DF putters but not being able to put my hands on one first has really held me back. Is the face of the DF putter hotter than your SC or comparable? Recently had another name brand putter where the face was so hot that controlling distance became extremely tedious. I definitely want to avoid that again if possible. Enjoy the videos as always!!

  • @Golfzilla70
    @Golfzilla70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Pete, thanks for doing this review! i think a lot of youtubers out there are hesitant to do reviews because this putter is such a customized piece. I actually saw this putter in 2 different proshops last year, and was amazed at how well i could putt with it but also amazed at how much they wanted for it. So it was a hard pass to begin with. But earlier this year, i decided i'd get one. Now granted, mine was only $450 because i didn't get some crazy shaft upgrade. But after having putted with it these past 6-8 months, it's obvious that it's the best putter i've ever had (and now i'm longing for the shaft upgrade because I'm curious if there's a big difference in feel or not!)
    I started playing in the early 80's with an old Bullseye putter, got a Ping Pal in the mid 80's that i used up until about 2010, and have tried Ghost Spiders, the new Ping TR stuff, and even an MLA model from Sweden which was a very interesting club in its own right. All of these putters had good points, but the LAB putter just blows them all away. And mark my words, once you've putted with it for a few weeks, you're going to be amazed at how much you feel the imbalance of all the other putters in the market. You don't realize how much you're fighting your stroke until you've putted with a LAB putter for a while.
    I'm definitely a fan, and as for the price, well, it is expensive for something like this, but you guys are reviewing $400-$600 drivers every time a new one comes to the market and $1200-$3000 sets of irons regularly. And those drivers, if you're an avid golfer like myself, those faces are so thin it's not unheard of for them to break after a season or two. Pray you're still in the warranty period, and if it's used on eBay well that's bad luck. The LAB putter is a highly customized club made for the individual that requests it. Part of what makes it work is getting the proper lie angle for your setup. They just can't make a whole bunch of these and throw them in some proshop because truthfully you can't get the balance exactly right without getting the lie angle real close to right. And apparently that lie angle goes anywhere from 63 degrees up to 75+ degrees. I love the tech, and love the customer service of the company. I wish they had a way to get their stuff in front of the eyes of more golfers because I think they've got the best putter tech on the market.

    Hi Peter, I traveled down this same path. I liked the technology and got fitted in person. When I started using it on the course the results were poor, and I thought ‘oh no what have I done!?!’ But then something clicked and putts started dropping. Longer putts started dropping too. The ball stayed on the line I choose. What I really liked was the knee knocker putts of 3-5ft became a lot easier because the pressed forward grip and the shaft being well behind the putter face all but eliminated the yips. I find myself being more aggressive on mid range putts because I know I can make the come back putt if I miss. Now I just have to read the greens better.

    Very fair review of the LAB putters, thank you Peter. Enjoyed it. I had mine for about 3 years now when it was known back then as "Directed Force 2.0", not branded under LAB as it is now. The original designer Bill Presse IV designed the lie balance. I have the 2.0 along with the original Stability shaft putter and I have not taken this putter out of the bag. Not even close and I have all the fancy nancy Scotty, MACHINE, Byron etc etc etc
    Another note, I think you also need to take into account the Pilots view. The all black stealth Directed Force is just that. Stealth. All you see is BLACK and the white aim line. There is no logo or fancy pattern that gets into your vision so your eyes naturally focus on the aim. As Ping has proven even the smallest shaft label does draw your eye away. Not here. One of the reason why you may feel "comfortable" on as you stand over your putter.
    Also another important tip from the innovator, Bill Presse IV. Place the center shaft (where the shaft meets the head) EXACTLY under your belt. This sets you up perfectly each and every time. No need to add or remove forward press. You'll have more pure rolls
    Also YES the directed force is lie balance for the whole face so you can stroke it on the toe and heel and it will roll true but with less force (due to less mass as compared to center). I often use Jackie Burke's putting style of toe hits to control right to left down hill putts to minimize speed and control those type of putts. Reverse to heel putting from left to right breaking downhill putts.
    My only gripe is the lack of "artistic" head covers since none of them for the regular mallet putter will fit the DF head. It's an inch longer and wider FYI.

    I found a lot of inconsistencies in my putting as of lately. 3 putting everything. I recently started to adapt the putting grip you have with both of your hands and I have literally taken my putts from 3 putts almost every hole to a 2 putt or less. Love the control it gives me. Currently using Odyssey double wide stroke lab 2019. Averaged 2 putts per hole today and felt great.

    I use an Odyssey White Hot #2 Center Shafted Bladed Putter. It was 2nd hand when I picked it up in about 2007.
    It's perfect for me because I'm tight, and also because i'm also able to turn it around and hit chip shots left-handed out of bushes/next to trees etc when I don't have a swing on with my right.
    Rather than upgrading I'm planning to have it re-gripped.

    I have this putter. It is fugly, it is big and yes I got flack for it from buddies and random people. However it works. I have reduced my putts per round by 5 strokes. I average 29 now and before I was 34 and sometimes afraid of fast, downhill or really breaking putts. Im not afraid to be aggressive on putts anymore because inside 5-8 feet- it’s automatic. I would say whatever works and if you can save 3-5 strokes per round it’s worth it. People spend $550 on a driver and I can guarantee you those don’t save the strokes these do. Get fit so the putter matches your height, swing and angle of how you hold it. If you buy one- the online fitting is free. After 9 holes usually people see me making putts or not missing by much on difficult putts and they stop talking junk and usually ask to try it.

    Great review, Pete!I actually think this is the future of putting tech. They will get prettier as more companies try it out but I think there is a lot of benefit to the torque balance of the putter head and the confidence the player gets from having a tiny bit more control over the club face.

    • @jalanhart
      @jalanhart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The lie angle balancing is just fantastic tech. Now sure, your hands do mitigate a lot of the natural torque in putters when you hold them, but you’re still fighting it the entire stroke every stroke. Get used to a LAB and go back and you immediately feel the difference. Golf is hard enough, why make it harder?

However, you can do a remote fitting to get your specs and find one for half their normal price. It's a great chance to try a great putter at a deeply discounted price.

    Currently I'm using an Odyssey White Hot RX2 which I got 2nd hand off Ebay for a song and I utterly LOVE it. It works great for Me. I like its looks LOADS and it feels so natural. Won't be swapping anytime soon (I'm a faithful kind of a bloke).
    When I first started out I just robbed My Dads clubs and smashed about with them. Amongst the ensemble was "The Blob" (his putter). This thing was literally a blob of chromed iron with a centre shaft. It was beyond dreadful, it had all the feel of a turnip on a broom handle.
    The LAB B2 reminds Me very much of "The Blob", just a more engineered version, much more.
    Having laid eyes upon the B2, I've decided to put the rubber bottom sheet on the bed in readiness for the inevitable nightmares.

    Great video Pete. Something out of the ordinary. I currently use a Taylor made armour 2. I love it. Putting is probably the strongest part of my game, especially pace putting so I'll be sticking with what I have. I don't think the lab putter is bad value if it saves you 4-5 strokes a round 👍

    Thanks for the review. Do agree that the price is going to keep a lot of folks away. I'm wondering if just the fitting might have contributed to your comfort level with the putters and that perhaps getting a fitting with any putter would be the difference.

    I bought the LAB 2.1 this summer and love it as well. I went from a pretty bad putter to a pretty good one. Crazy to say this, because I’m always skeptical of people who say this, but $700 literally bought me 3 strokes off my handicap. I don’t care how ugly it is now. I’m convinced.

    I tried the B2 golf putter today. The balance and weight is perfect. My only issue with the megamind putter is that I felt like I’d have a tendency to manipulate the face direction. Id love to get the B2 if it wasn’t so expensive haha

    As a golfer who appreciates the weird, it’s nice to see that more companies and golfers are making/using putters that just look odd and fun while still being functional. Right now I use an odyssey backstryke marxmam. Definitely an odd looking putter for most people but it rolls the ball like a dream!

    • @haddenmiller4364
      @haddenmiller4364 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The backstryke was Odyssey's attempt to create a DFP 2.1 after they saw it at the PGA show 5 or 6 years ago.

    I currently have a fully custom fitted beautiful Piretti Cottonwood in the bag. But I would putt with a garden spade if I thought I could hole more putts or putt more consistently.
    A friend of mine in South Africa got one of these and wouldn't trade it for anything but for me the cost is a little high right now. Maybe some time in the new year.

Give us updates on your strokes gained putting while using the DF 2.1 and I am going to order mine asap!! (As soon as I am off nightshifts)

    Thing is, when you have a monstrosity of a putter in your bag, it gives your opponent a phycological boost. It yells "I have putting issues", in the same way an unorthodox putting grip does.

    I still use the Ping Anser 2 that I bought used back in the early 90's. It doesn't let me down and I'm comfortable with it. I did recently put a Winn jumbo grip on it and like it very much. Honestly, I really couldn't justify spending that much on a putter. But then again, I'm cheap and usually look for used equipment over new because of price.

    I'm using the odyssey stroke lab v-line Centre shaft putter and love it. I'm 100% use over looks if something is gonna make me improve my game but it's ugly I'll get used to the looks if its shaving off shots. I'd love to try the cleveland launcher hb irons to see the difference they would make to my consistency but it's a expensive experiment for someone not involved in the industry 🏌️‍♂️ love the content keep um rolling in

    I am currently using a Odyssey Stroke Lab 2 Ball Fang FB putter with a Arm-Lock brand counterbalance grip and 25g weight in the head. And have been putting decent with it lately, especially after switching to a left hand low grip. Yes I would entertain the thought of changing to one of those if I could afford it, even for the ugly one.

    I bought a 2.1 earlier this year. Yes it looks like a branding iron, but my putting has improved quite a bit with it. I got the stability tour shaft and yes it's expensive for a single club (~$700). However, I justify the expense in that it's the one club I play every hole (minus the rare chip in).
