As an American, this whole process has been fascinating to watch. I've watched the funerals of our Presidents and other honored names in our history, but have never watched the succession of a sovereign before. And, I admit, I am kicking myself for not paying more attention to the succession in Japan. I could learn something there, too.
Elisabeth II was the Queen for the whole world, or at least Western civilization. She was the stern but loving grandmother, a woman who has charmed generations of people. Even at the lows of her popularity [in my lifetime during the death Princess Diana], she still held a large piece of our hearts. Yes, even with those who were her political opponents from around the world.
Rest in well-deserved peace, Elisabeth Windsor. You now go to your loving family, your beloved Phillip, and an entire kennel full of Corgies that miss their Mom.

And, of course, I have the privilege of looking at it all from the other side of the world... that grants more than a little perspective.
When I was a young man, I served in the US Army in a cavalry regiment patrolling the Inter German Border. I had the luck to be in an exchange platoon with 15/19th 'Hussies' [as they called themselves]. Great guys and a real eye opener for 19-year-old me. While they could belt out the Pistol's 'God Save The Queen' with the best of them, you were taking your life in your hands if you insulted THEIR Queen in their presence. I watched three of them kick the crap out of a German punk-rocker at a bierkeller while I was there. PROTIP: don't insult somebody's head of government and then spit on them.

People cana and went in peace and war but she was the one caring, Christian and democratic (read mother in a real sense) to us all. Even to the United States. I have served for a short time in BRITANNIA and have land in Scotland. But my memories are of a beautiful and magnificent woman who managed while oft under file from the drones to combine reality diplomacy maternal instinct and common touch/humanity with just being a woman.

E2 devoted a lifetime of love and service to her people,, and with each passing decade the monarchy is indeed dying a slow death within itself through time and history. HMTQ was the last of the true family glue that held it all together, but after C2 is gone I highly doubt the Royal Family is bonded like they are today. Whatever William is left with will be a fraction of ceremony and formality vs the true queen that E2 was.

In 1954, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness visited Australia and were to attend a surf carnival at Manly Beach. It was a magnificent Australian summer day. The Royal couple arrived in a Land Rover and the carnival commenced.
