There's a version of this shot by a Canadian TV team, practically without commentary, and all the better for that.
Instead of sitting with the rest of the women in the Abbey while this procession was taking place, Princess Anne asked the Queen whether she could march behind the coffin with the men to pay her respects to her grandmother. The Queen said yes. She was the only female member of the Royal Family to do so, and I find it so fitting that she did. A very nice tribute, and I doubt The Queen Mother would’ve expected anything less.
Funny thing is, I never thought about a gender issue watching this, surprising it was inserted actually. but now that you bring it up, I find the ceremony here so very masculine and it's wonderful.

We took our three kids up to London to see the Queen Mother lying in state at Westminster hall. We queued for ages across the bridge over the Thames in a biting winter wind, finally reaching the other side by the houses of parliament to be greeted by volunteers handing out hot drinks. Finally reaching Westminster hall and entering to find a surreal scene of the flag draped coffin with four cavalry men with bowed heads resting on reversed swords. I shall never forget the quietness and calmness of that scene whilst people slowly filed past the coffin in silent respect.
The pipes are for everyone and the roots of this instrument basically come from all over the globe. Pick up a chanter and get working! You'll be on the pipes in no time!
Every time I watch this video, I am always amazed at the dignity and perfect stride of the horse at 3:26. It's almost like the rider took the horse aside the night before, gave it a good brief on what the next day entailed, and the horse understood every word.... watch the hoof falls land in perfect time with the cadence drum...

I was there too (to the right of the press stand, right across Westminster Abbey's entrance) and I can affirm that video can't convey the absolutely magnificence of this hearse parade. The way the rythmic pipes and drum resonated on the street - even when they wey were still far enough to be out of view - with their volume gradually increasing as they approached, was perhaps the most memorable moment of the day in my opinion. Truly soul-stirring. I also remembered that the Queen was holding some white papers whilst waiting outside the Abbey; was glad to be able to see in the video that memory hadn't tricked me.

Hi, its only fair to mention that I am not the originator of this video. I put a copy of it up when the previous copy was taken down a number of years ago, because I believed that it was too good not to be seen. A display of our best during a solemn time so to speak and so unequivocally British. I can take no credit for this.

I was moved to see this spectacular display of the Pipes & Drums (in perfect tune and step) marching in mass ~ in tribute to the Queen Mother :) Did you notice the bell tower sounding 440 pitch 'twice' as the chanters struck low-A in near unison. Beyond the obvious sadness of the occasion and funeral procession, that seemed haunting to me.

"When I remember all the friends once linked together I've seen around me fall like leaves in windy weather. They weren't just "friends", they were the major players in the politics of the 20th century. And they all fell like leaves in windy weather.
Even more magnificent than this, for me, is on the clip entitled "Queen Mother's Funeral, Conclusion, Part 2", from Canadian broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo : the middle part, about ten minutes or more, is of the massed pipes and drums striking up a lament as the Queen Mother's coffin is borne out of Westminster Abbey, and continuing to play until the coffin is put in the hearse and the latter is driven away. For practically all this time there is no narrative - just the camera panning across the scene of the Royal Family standing to attention all the while, along with military retinue, and of course, the massed pipes and drums, playing beautifully a moving lament.
1:15-1:27 The soldiers are called to attention, Mist Covered Mountains starts playing and the bell chimes, all in just those few seconds. Lump in throat every time!
I will be getting this send off in Wales by my beloved 1940 of then 50 years. I bet there will be millions attending my funeral and even Toy Story will be part of the send off too

A very nice piece of film for a whole range of reasons.... It is genuine in its "you are really there" feel. The accoustics are excellent capturing both the pipes and the bass drum beats. The colour and music are wonderful and swirling. The slow accurate" hesitation" step of the Scots Guards Drum Major in gold state dress is the most perfect example the correct slow marching I have witnessed... Watch him,

Although the initial planning had been ongoing for years, the pipers and drummers, only got together about a week before, so rehearsals were less than one week.

I was there too (to the right of the press stand, right across Westminster Abbey's entrance) and I can affirm that video can't convey the absolutely magnificence of this hearse parade. The way the rythmic pipes and drum resonated on the street - even when they wey were still far enough to be out of view - with their volume gradually increasing as they approached, was perhaps the most memorable moment of the day in my opinion. Truly soul-stirring.
I also remembered that the Queen was holding some white papers whilst waiting outside the Abbey; was glad to be able to see in the video that memory hadn't tricked me.

The Queen Mother to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, visited Banting House National Historic Site on July 7, 1989, after making a whirlwind trip to London, Ontario during which she unveiled a life-size sculpture of Dr. Banting and lit the Flame of Hope. I was honored to be an official photographer on site that special day. If I may say so, she was a treasure. It would be the first and last time that I saw the Queen Mother. Although a brief encounter, I shall never forget her smile. Today, I came across this amazing post, some 27 years later, having just viewed, another wonderful post featuring the Black Watch Pipe Band. I was moved to see this spectacular display of the Pipes & Drums (in perfect tune and step) marching in mass ~ in tribute to the Queen Mother :) Did you notice the bell tower sounding 440 pitch 'twice' as the chanters struck low-A in near unison. Beyond the obvious sadness of the occasion and funeral procession, that seemed haunting to me.

I have played these as waltzes for ceilidh dances for over forty years and If I ever knew the names, they were long forgotten. I have a lot of tunes like that. I never forget a tune but the names seem to leak out of my head these days:

Being half Scottish the sound of the bagpipes and the sight of proud Scottish soldiers in full regalia always does something to me.
Irish and Nepalease too. Check the uniforms of the band members.
Its a mass pipe and drum band of all british army units, only about a quarter of them would be from Scottish Regiments, i know what you mean tho

When they carried her out 9f the Abbey, the band played Oft In The Stilly Night. The words were so fitting. "When I remember all the friends once linked together I've seen around me fall like leaves in windy weather. They weren't just "friends", they were the major players in the politics of the 20th century. And they all fell like leaves in windy weather.
Such a cacophony.
Full of beauty... replete with misery.
Emotion of such contrast to make the heart beat.

Even more magnificent than this, for me, is on the clip entitled "Queen Mother's Funeral, Conclusion, Part 2", from Canadian broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo : the middle part, about ten minutes or more, is of the massed pipes and drums striking up a lament as the Queen Mother's coffin is borne out of Westminster Abbey, and continuing to play until the coffin is put in the hearse and the latter is driven away. For practically all this time there is no narrative - just the camera panning across the scene of the Royal Family standing to attention all the while, along with military retinue, and of course, the massed pipes and drums, playing beautifully a moving lament.

I was only 9 when the Queen Mother died but I still remember watching her funeral on the TV. While I can't say for sure, I'd like to think that watching this as a child made me the staunch monarchist I am today.

Army Piping at it's finest...My Home, Mist Covered Mountains, ...tunes beloved by the dear Queen Mother and selected with her own hand to be played at her funeral...she was an enormous supporter of Army Piping as is Queen Elizabeth II...the Pipes are thick and brilliant and the marching superb..it had been rehearsed for years and is spot on in presentation and dignity...God Bless you Majesty from America.
Although the initial planning had been ongoing for years, the pipers and drummers, only got together about a week before, so rehearsals were less than one week.
