At the 2003 Edinburgh Tattoo there was a notable gap in the initial parade of the masses pipes and drums of about 10 soldiers. The MC pointed out the gap to the crowds , and then said ‘ but they flew in today from Iraq , please welcome the Black Watch.’ .. they marched in playing the pipes all dressed in desert fatigues.. there wasn’t a dry eye in the place....
In 1963 my mother (Irish) and Dad (Canadian) took me, my brother and sister to see the Black Watch at the Los Angeles Forum. I was 6 years old and it's a night seared in my memory. I still get both tears and shivers when I hear bagpipes. This clip is awesome to watch and it brings back all the magic. Thank you for posting it.
I hear up evertime. I have been at military funerals and a funeral for a couple of police officers back home. In August 2019 I learned I have Scottish ancesters that date back to the 13th century. My maternal grandparents came from Finland. That is all the family knew. They are all gone now. I have Scottish, Swedish and Finnish on my mom's side. Plus Viking.

Impossible to choose, but when you hear that sound of bagpipes, drums and marching feet coming towards you the adrenaline goes up - it's fight or flight time, and my heart rate goes up. I think the playing while marching is the most impressive. Nov'24. UK. E❤.

Amazing Grace on the pipes always tears me up. If you want the full effect hear it at the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial ceremony in Colorado Springs, yearly in September. There are generally somewhere between 300-600 pipes there. It'll blow you away!

I grew up in a time with many parades and always the pipe and drums , the sound is part of me being only second generation born in the USA. Loved it so much that i told my parents at age 5 that i wanted to dance the Scottish dances. She found one and i did it for 14 years. Ballet was added after the first year. Most memories of that time are wonderful!
I always tear up when I hear Amazing Grace played by a pipe and drum band. It is hauntingly beautiful. I have always loved bagpipe music since a child. I am not a Scot. You don’t need to be to love the music.

As much as I love the black watch I have to vote for the 4 Scots Highlanders. They had a much better overall tone and pitch to their band. All three bands were absolutely amazing. Thank you for the video.

The Black Watch take it for their drum line alone. Those boys are sharp. The Atholl were a very, very close second. Of course Atholl was playing in the poring rain so not real an even comparison. That said I would love to see any of them here in the States.
All three are magnificent but my choice would be the Black Watch. I saw them as a child when they toured the states in the 60s and have been a fan of theirs ever since.
I've never been to Scotland or Ireland but I think ancestors from that part of the world left something in my genes -- still can't hear Amazing Grace without crying all the way through it.
Real difficult to listen to Amazing Grace on pipes. Pipers led my Grandfather's casket to his final resting place. Every time I hear it played on pipes it reminds me of having to say farewell to a great Scotsman. Can't get through the song with tears. Just beautiful.

The Highlanders for sure, there is a reason they attract the top talent in the British Army, they kept the piping traditions of their antecedent regiments and it still shows.
Paul Wallace ... well I’m not in the know ...but the pipes fascinates and I’m in awe of its spectacular sound! One question... if you are a piper can you tell me something... where would the unit go to practice that wouldn’t create a stir? I think that’s an interesting question, as most anybody would stop just to hear the beautiful sound!

This just popped up in my suggested videos, that's my mates uncle Alister in the thumbnail! My late dad also played the pipes in the Atholl Highlanders.
This so emotional, and beautiful, thank you - bagpipes have been around for hundreds of years, yet it's always spine tingles, goosebumps and chills when we hear them, either as a lone piper, or in unison. Bagpipes to me always mean our beloved late Queen Elizabeth II - what a gem she was. So wish she was still here with us...... E❤
All pipe bands are brilliant, but I think I will have to vote for 3 Scots, The Black watch, they seem to have a perfect balance and very crisp drumming, with a bass drum cutting through at just the right volume!
As much as I admire the Black Watch as both my grandfather and uncle served in, the BEST Pipe and Drums band is the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. My old unit, and for a while led by my amazing mentor, Major Tony Crease RIP. Long live the Scots DG's!!!

As a US Marine, we did a big exercise with the Brits in the 70's. The 42nd marched on the field playing All the Blue Bonnets. I know why the Germans called them the Ladies from Hell! Great bunch of men! Glad there on our side
You know, they just might be one of the best bands I've ever heard. One must give credit where it truly belongs. Golly they turn out a magnificent sound. Really gets the Scottish blood flowing! Bravo.

Amazing Grace was played on the bagpipes at my great grandmothers funeral mass in 1990. Still brings a tear to my eyes when I hear it.

One question... if you are a piper can you tell me something... where would the unit go to practice that wouldn’t create a stir? I think that’s an interesting question, as most anybody would stop just to hear the beautiful sound!

I can remember when the Black Watch P&D was 50 strong.. That was in 1963 for the USA tour
I was just a kid when my Dad played on the Ed Sullivan show with the Black Watch P&D.

Contests all throughout the spring and summer, with bands that frequently make it to the Grade 1 finals at the World Championships. Check out the 78th Fraser HIghlanders of Hamilton, Ontario and the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band in Vancouver

This so emotional, and beautiful, thank you - bagpipes have been around for hundreds of years, yet it's always spine tingles, goosebumps and chills when we hear them, either as a lone piper, or in unison. Bagpipes to me always mean our beloved late Queen Elizabeth II - what a gem she was. So wish she was still here with us...... E❤
All pipe bands are brilliant, but I think I will have to vote for 3 Scots, The Black watch, they seem to have a perfect balance and very crisp drumming, with a bass drum cutting through at just the right volume!
As much as I admire the Black Watch as both my grandfather and uncle served in, the BEST Pipe and Drums band is the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. My old unit, and for a while led by my amazing mentor, Major Tony Crease RIP.

As a US Marine, we did a big exercise with the Brits in the 70's. The 42nd marched on the field playing All the Blue Bonnets. I know why the Germans called them the Ladies from Hell! Great bunch of men! Glad there on our side
