This is not a hate video 😭 *I am NOT saying g-idle felt jealous or sad about newjeans’ success in real life.* This is a story that I believe g-idle crafted for their album narrative very intentionally to go with the theme of their album
ALSO I know NewJeans debuted with attention - I just meant that hype boy was *a part* of their debut

i love how g-idle, being an older group, was able to embrace the more mature aspects of the y2k concept. to me, new jeans feels like nostalgia from watching old vhs tapes at your grandma's house, looking through highschool yearbooks, a very sweet and innocent depiction of the era. queencard, on the other hand, feels like a crazy college party and i love it.

I don't really see Queencard as Idle's attempt to copy New Jeans. While it does play into the Y2K revival, I feel like it's more directly just 2000s chick flicks and serendipitously coincides with Barbie-core (pretty much being released at the peak of the Barbie movie hype too). The storyline and references are more camp than anything. The biggest giveaway that GIDLE isn't taking themselves that seriously with this comeback is just the choice of subject matter. Tomboy and Nude both had really poignant and assertive messages, while Queencard is a lot more laid back and silly (knowing your worth and less fuck the patriarchy). If GIDLE were really trying to copy NJ, then they would also try to wholly adopt the Y2K concept (and maybe go for more dreampop instead of upbeat); instead, they're continuing the elaborate storylines and deliberate messaging.

I agree! I didn’t intend to accuse IDLE of copying NewJeans, but rather suggest that the narrative of the I FEEL album intends for the push from Allergy to Queencard to be inspired by NewJeans in a meaningful way. That’s why I wanted to include Queencard in the title, and not (G)I-DLE
Y2K was already experiencing a resurgence, NewJeans capitalized on it, and undoubtedly inspired a lot of the Y2K aesthetics we’ve seen in kpop since their debut
In my opinion, and with Allergy’s lyrical tie-in to NewJeans, I think the I FEEL album was IDLE’s take on the Y2K trend but with a layer of complexity - rather than just trying the aesthetic out, they wanted to develop a story around it and were able to incorporate NewJeans’ popularity as a part of the story about finding self-worth

this song is genuinely important to me because I joke about it so often- but, in joking about it, I'm able to be open about something I love that others definitely don't. I genuinely don't feel quite so embarrassed about the lyrics when they're blatantly ridiculous and great for that reason. edit: guys i did not say you can’t criticize a song.. there are limits to criticism. it’s not critism to say “soyeon needs to be kicked and never write again” just because YOU found an issue with the song.
What I hate is despite Queencard and Allergy having a good message behind them, people still found something to complain about whether it be the lyrics, their pronounciation, or Soyeon being a “terrible” song writer and that she should let people who know English write the English lyrics. I personally loved this song and is one of my top 10 in 2023. I also loved how their inspiration for Y2K wasn’t New Jeans, but looked moreso to those early 2000’s movies like Mean Girls.

Telling the most prominent 'female korean producer' to write better 'english lyrics' is such a xenophobic behavior tbh, Soyeon doesn’t owe anyone to conform herself to fit western standards. The lines are meant to be silly and as candid as they are, and that's why Queencard is so powerful. I mean kpop stans love to criticize XG for aave, but when korean gg used 'their own style of english' theyre being criticized too? pick a lane and get reaaall, lol these stans hypocrisy stinks.

I've always liked Gidle, their music was great since the beginning and I was always so intrigued, how their songs utilize the members' really distinct voices to their fullest while still being cohesive in the end.
The turning point was with I never die, when I became incredibly obsessed with Tomboy (like pretty much everyone), but also Never Stop Me and Liar, Miyeon's Drive only made me more hyped and I Love proven once and for all, they are only gonna get better and more deep and different. I've always loved them for their music, but I slowly started to be more and more interested in their concepts and messages, to the point, where I was as excited for that as much as for the music, which definitely didn't disappoint. Allergy is right up my ally and Queencard is literally the song of the year, love all the b-sides as well, but I didn't realize how much of an impactful artist they are until the Warsaw Kpop Nation.
The atmosphere was uncomparable even before it started and they played the groups MVs people were screaming Queencard like crazy, but when the actual performance happened it was uncomparable to anything I have ever imagined, it felt like Gidle really made the whole audience theirs and everyone was screaming the lyrics so loud I almost didn't hear the backtrack from where I was. I have been at a Harry Styles concert few months prior and even though the stadium was almost full, which means there were tens of thousands more people, it wasn't even close to that Queencard stage.
I don't think I will ever forget, who Gidle are anymore, because for me they are not a 4th gen girl group, they are THE 4th gen girl group. I don't even stan them by the way😂.

I feel like its not the same because Queencard is high-teen like StayC, where the identity is 2010s american pop culture.
Whereas Newjeans concept is storytelling + minimalism, Ditto is vhs era drum n bass, Attention was more high-teen but OMG,Super Shy, and Cool With You arent the same concept.
New Jeans, regardless of the genre, have a "sound", minimalism, soft vocals, guitar bass (Tell Me Cover,Cookie,Cool With You,Zero).

    • @choujimi
      @choujimi  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Yeah that’s kind of what I was getting at! In the ‘I FEEL’ album narrative, idle contemplates what makes the Y2K aesthetic so popular for groups like NewJeans, and tries to emulate it, but misses the point entirely. As a result of that, they end up starting their own trend and finding self worth by way of infusing the song with aspects of themselves rather than other people - Queencard is quite idiosyncratic to IDLE by the end, and I really can’t imagine another group doing it as well as they did

They're not trying to copy them in the slightest, they are using the trend and acknowledging it because what's trendy on social media is amongst the themes of both Queencard and Allergy alike. Also, they are very much leaning into popular early 2000s comedy movies for the songs, something New Jeans doesn't

Love your interpretation and the how it concludes and ties together to the main point of finding a way to appreciate yourself its very interesting, but i disagree.
To me i think Gidle was trying to put a spin on the Y2k trend, even during Oh my god, Soyeon admitted that due to the popularity of girl crush, she wanted to put unique Gidle spin to it. New jeans was obviously one of the biggest inspiration, but we cannot ignore any other reference that Soyeon herself gave out, the biggest being the film I feel pretty, and the obvious ones you can spot in the mv, plus other modern examples like Ariana grande's been there all night or Little mix.
And to add to that i do think she is criticizing something, the reason why the 2000s movies where selected is due to the very flawed film trope that existed at the time, the ugly duckling transforming into the princess or popular girl, u know the one where she takes off the glasses. This trope was very apparent in those movies and so i believe Soyeon chose those movies to criticize that trope, because a version of that trope still exists in our time, but this time through social media, hence you see the hybrid of the 2000s electronics with modern social media. She chose that trope and paired it up with i feel pretty's film ethos (where a young lady learns to appreciate herself even though she did not undergo any physical changes)
All of this of-course leads to the same conclusion of appreciating yourself, but i believe in my interpretation more due to the context clues and Soyeon herself admitting her references.
No disrespect, but i feel like you took the 'hype boy Tomboy' line and formed your argument around it, thus simplifying or watering down other nuanced ideas these two songs play with.
I feel like the copying New jeans, or the hypeboy line does make sense, but it is just a small piece to the overall puzzle. them wanting to be New jeans is another part that adds to the story of insecurity but in a meta way (since this time they are referring to their real life kpop idol selves) But i wouldn't say its the driving force of the entire plot. its just a nice small reference that coincides with the overall theme of the story. Am i making sense here?
Anyway great video, always love your thoughts, but Queencard is not that shallow, its honestly really interesting if you put together these references from visuals and lyrics side by side. Like there is a specific reason why Gidle chose 2000s movies as i pointed out, plus fusing old tech with social media. Plus the main point of the song was to subvert the meaning of queencard, a word inspired by the Mean girls movie. I dont know, it goes beyond New jeans at that point. But i do acknowledge that without them, Soyeon wouldn't have pursued this concept to this extent. But even then Soyeon has actually dabbled in y2k before, like in her solo album Windy, and Allergy sounds a lot like Never stop me from the I Never die album which came out before New jeans. So yeah although New jeans was the big inspiration, all these factors to me suggest that they where just the jumping point, not the main focal point of the entire comeback project.

    • @choujimi
      @choujimi  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I definitely get what you mean!! I should’ve made it more clear - I didn’t intend to make it sound like (G)I-DLE was only intending to emulate NewJeans with this comeback, this is just a part of the album’s narrative that really interested me! I think it brings the story of the album into the real world in a meaningful way, and introduces Queencard’s position as a title track for the project
Soyeon herself said that by the time of Queencard, she was tired of making music with deep messages/complex meanings. I think Queencard is not as serious for that reason, but there’s still a lot of world building behind the narrative of this album that comes from many different places, I agree!

So I’m a millennial (cue me watching your vid on older kpop fans from a few months ago and being like oh…. I’m in this pic and I don’t like it 😂) And you’re so right with your point about Queencard copying Y2k pop culture that no one particularly wants to emulate. It’s actually been kind of fascinating watching younger kpop fans be nostalgic for the trappings of the early 2000s, largely because of the way NewJeans reinterprets the era in their vids as a nostalgic/vaporwave kind of time.
There was certainly an element of that in the early 2000s, especially in our computers. But there was also a strong streak of mean-spiritedness and even more fondness for just throwing slurs around. And also the fashion could get really really ugly. When will we get a kpop retro vid that has idols wearing overly long bootcut jeans that get dragged through melting snow and stay soggy all day???? Mean Girls shows the best and worst of how rough around the edges things could get back then, so it makes sense for Queencard to allude to it.
All that rambling to say it’s also so interesting to me that Queencard (and Allergy) call back to Mean Girls and White Chicks. Basically reveling in some of the less dreamily aesthetic moments of the era. I don’t think it’s doing this to say “nostalgia is bad and you’re romanticizing bad things!” (Back during the actual y2k era there was a lot of 80s nostalgia after all.) I think it’s maybe using the less ideal media and looks from that era to make the point that people have always been people regardless of what styles are in fashion. The insecurities in Allergy and the power fantasy of Queencard are things people have obsessed over since the time of the Pyramids lol.
So yeah blah blah blah I agree with you. Queencard isn’t a parody but it’s definitely a fun spoof of stuff from my childhood that’s being used to make a larger point about self esteem. And the joys of twerking on the runway I guess.
(Sorry I don’t have the work ethic to make video essays of my own so apparently I felt like writing out the script of one in a reply to your vid? But yeah I was just really into the points you raised I guess!)

I think the tie-in to Mean Girls is pretty significant, as it seems like the narrative around that movie changes as times goes on. People start to empathize and want to understand the “antagonist” of that movie more than anyone else as time goes on. In retrospect, she’s less of a truly evil character and is seen as more of a victim or consequence of society being the way that it is

@@luvdept bts and seventeen made newjeans then....with over the top budget, full promo from lnsta, western artists, famous actors, hong kong famous and full promo from all the famous seniors, extreme producer min hee jin with hybe budget, USA IabeI since debut and extreme payola, if they still faiI then I dont know what to say....HYBE USA got all famous HoIIywood actors and singers under them thanks to BTS
To compare them with a self made artists from a midsize company who still didnt even have a US label after almost 6 years and lost the most popular member and made it all by themselves is like comparing night and day....

Queencard is a horrible song imo... sorry but its this loud obnoxious annoying sound so prominent from last gen in kpop that made me stop listening to kpop (i was a MASSIVE 2nd gen fan of the likes of t-ara, snsd , girls day etc)... if it wasnt for the likes of 50/50 reincorporating that 2nd gen sound and then moreso newjeans introducing the likes of uk garage, jersey club, miami bass and 90s r'n'b into kpop i still wouldnt be listening to kpop.... newjeans brought me back

I’m so glad I found your channel, you always have great things to say about everything, and never in a hateful way which is difficult to see nowadays with k-tubers, keep it up 🫶🏻
