what’s interesting is that, if im not mistaken, the first set me free teaser with the makeup was actually jeongyeon’s idea. so it seems like the twice members maybe had a broader vision for this comeback but that wasn’t fully expanded upon. like, this Does kind of link in the mv when sana removes her makeup and nayeon puts it back on her, the pieces are THERE, the IDEA is there but the lyrics kind of feel like adding new puzzle pieces to the already existing ones laying on a table. i feel like there was a bit of missed potential there. that being said, set me free is a top 3 twice title track for me so this isn’t shade to the song at all but as an era it definitely wasn’t as strong as it Could’ve been imo (like can u imagine how powerful it would’ve been if their first cb post renewals was abt being set free from expectations and limitations??)

When I saw the first teaser for Set Me Free where the members are removing their makeup I thought , “Wow, we’re getting an empowering concept about being free from the expectations that women are held to. Twice are moving in a deeper and more meaningful direction”. Then the actual song and music video came out and that framework was not a part of the final product and I was like huh??? To this day i’m still so confused and annoyed. It feels like JYP was too scared to piss off their demographic of 50 year old business men who still see Twice as cute innocent girls rather than GROWN FUCKING WOMEN!!!

I honestly wish that JYPE would take twices message from the “love between them and another”, to instead the love they have for themselves or their group. They’re at that point in their career, maturity wise. It seems like their last 2 releases REALLY wanted to be that. “Set me free” from societal expectations, or limitations of their industry. “One spark” and “I got you” being about the love they have for their group, and their careers. This change feels needed, and inevitable.

honestly, it kinda feels like since around 2021 Twice has been wanting to progress past the "cute and/or young love" concepts but Jyp just refuses to let them fully commit to the transition and instead wants to keep playing it safe since they make the company a TON of money. That isn't to say their music has been in a decline for the past few years, some of the more recent comebacks are among my all time favorites from them, but it just feels like there is some kind of disconnect between what the members and the company want for the future of the group. And if that's the case then it's pretty frustrating cause like they have the popularity, the stability, the seniority to branch out from the known Twice branding/sound/concept and still be successful, so set them free! (pun intended)

Honestly this whole issue is more of a JYP issue than a twice issue. Jyp has a tendency of releasing teasers and concept photos that don't match the actual product they are releasing. Itzy's sneakers being the number example, people thought it was a royal concept and it ended up being the total opposite. They really need to hire new people for their creative team because it's getting quite ridiculous that smaller companies are better at releasing teasers that build anticipation than a big 4 company.

I really want TW to do concept, sound, styling, lyricsim that they did for Perfect world for their Korean comeback.
I feel like it would a nice thing to both Onces and casual listeners cause I think Twice's becoming more and more formula based as comebacks go especially after contact renewal.
Not that all songs and performances are bad, far from it. I just see comebacks less extending as non Onces who genuinely enjoy in a lot of things they did both individually and as a group.

since ready to be was heavily promoted in the west, i feel like div2 took that fact that english speaking audiences in the west would not be looking into the lyrics quite as much as korean audiences, since we cant speak korean lol. and thats why i feel like there is a disconnect between the visual storytelling of the music video compared to the lyrics. if that makes sense? it is kind of sad that what couldve been with this project is right there in front of us in the mv, but the lyrics just dont tell the same story. but anyways... set me free was my top streamed song of 2023, and i have no qualms! i genuinely love the 70s inspired strings and disco sound that this followed, i think twice is at their best when they explore retro sounds (idk if that's a hot take but... i just think they pull it off so well)

That said, you could argue that maybe the creative directors (or who knows maybe TWICE themselves) wanted to portray love as this powerful force that fuels them to break past the obstacles to eventually be set free, idk.

Due to me not hearing JYP teasers through bad experiencies (yes Not Shy i still love you, but i'm talking to you) i didn't know what to expect from this comeback when i heard the title Set Me Free i thought that Twice were going to release their main Korean first break up song as a title track (Cry For Me doesn't count). So after hearing this video, the album and the title track i came to the conclusion that Ready to Be is a history of a relationship that starts strong and ends up horribly (With the order of the songs describing the relationship is Wallflower > Moonlight Sunrise > Ready to Be > Got the Thrills > Don't Blame It On Me > Crazy Stupid Love).
The problem i have perosnally (besides my issues with Twice & retro) is that Twice essence was almost entirely removed from the comeback. No, i'm not saying that the comeback should've been cutesy or colorful, but thw Twice essence & style is being lively, and Set Me Free (for the most part) is very sluggish. This IMO

Removing their makeup and removing themselves from limitations. The song had a lot of potential that I think went wrong. They went from a lot of people talking about the teaser to a few people talking about the song when it came out. The same thing happened with "I Got You" A lot of people were tuned in but the hype was lost as time went on and they didn't promote it until the album came out. Twice are still so very young and they can get even bigger than now with the right effort put into their music and sets. The songs are not bad, neither are the music videos. But something is lacking the star factor and is not the girls fault. It pisses me off that it seems like the only reason they still have comebacks is because the girls themselves want to remain together not because Jype cares about them any longer, even if they still have so much to offer is like the company doesn't see the point anymore besides the fans they already have..
Back when they released and promoted cry on me they were gaining so much western public and Jype didn't bother going after more

i feel JYP making twice known as the standard of girl groups, has not allowed them to explore out of their comfort zones ,which are mainly love songs. red velvet is known to be experimental and there's songs that have been disliked by the majority but still have a solid fanbase. companies will always prioritise domestic fans and as majority of twice fans in kr are male, i feel they are shifting towards newer groups of 4th/5th gen. which is why twice not FULLY committing to the change up because in fear of losing even more fans. JYP groups also tend to follow trends, unlike SM or YG who has their established sound

the problem with twice and itzy now is the lack of perspective and that's why their latest comeback have no spark (no pun intended lol) and some creative gimmick that makes their music stand out, the sound and visuals as bland as possible and that's what upsets me the most

I agree with you ...this concept seems unfinished; i think to they need to go all out to attract more attention and add more fun in the concept. As a fan I'm a bit sad that Set Me Free had so much potential but much of it is wasted. For example the trailer of them removing makeup, and finally breaking free from societal standards towards women, but was taken aback in the end, and was turned into a love song. If the girls wanted to do a concept like this, their creative team should fully support them... they don't have much chances left to do a concept they want as a whole group anymore(considering they're into their 9th year now)
Nonetheless, the song is still a banger, and I will support twice unconditionally ❤

i love set me free as a song, although many onces do hate on it a lot. i don’t think it’s because they think the song is bad, but as you mentioned in the video, rtb was twice’s first comeback after the contract renewal. onces expected a lot more from the title track than what set me free gave. it didn’t help that the concept was so ambiguous either.
now ready to be as an era is a part of twice’s journey that i will always remember. the tour provided a lot of firsts for both twice and onces which was fun for me to experience. the ready to be tour was meant to show the world twice’s individual talents as well as their group talents. the tour has a lot of sentimental value to me, but the album it was attached to didn’t hit the mark. not because it was bad by any means, but when twice have title tracks like i can’t stop me and talk that talk, there is a high bar to meet.

Most notably set me free which could've been TWICE's own Wannabe or Dalla Dalla
There's also blame it on me which has potential to be more powerful self love type song
Dont get me wrong i absolutely love these songs and Dahyun's writing
I feel she captured the beat of crazy stupid love live much better
Like you can feel from the other 4 songs what they are
Moonlight sunrise gives of this sexy vibe and hence its lyrics are kinda suggestive as well
Wallflower screams elegant flirty and that's exactly what that song is (it is my theme song atp, i live for it😭😭😭)
Crazy stupid live screams break up song and it is that😭
Got the thrills screams newly fell in love and is that as well
The title of the album ks perfect for these 4 songs as they are ready to be something new
Moonlight sunrise us ready to enter a new type of love
Wallflower is well (god) getting a wallflower out of there shell, making them ready to be something new
Crazy stupid love is ready to move on
Got the thrills is ready to embrace anew feeling
Set me free and blame it on me thi feel they have much much more potential

I thought Set Me Free was great. But One Spark... a total miss. After Set Me Free which was more retro and grounded, that comeback was supposed to bring back the original TWICE power and hype.
TWICE have built their career and success on innovative music and concepts. Combining the more experienced and mature TWICE of now with the genius of TWICE before would bring the group and JYP to new heights. It would be absolutely groundbreaking, they have so much to offer. Remember it was a time where Twice were the direct competition of Blackpink... what did JYPE do ?
Something clearly changed at JYP if you look at all of their girlgroups, they're in a downfall but for what reason?

  • @coralskpopcorner

Honestly I kind of like the ambiguity of this come back, the title track is kind of like a double entendre, however the fact it stayed as a framework is it’s main downfall. I imagine twice have a massive/relatively large budget and i really would have loved to see them explore several concepts like the makeup one, the 70s concept, the film concept… don’t tell me one story but several. Sometimes not everything needs to be to the point in my opinion and be one linear story and that’s okay. They could have done several concepts in one, maybe doing a Newjeans and having several M/V’s for the same song (like side A, side B, etc). JYPE really needs to get their stuff together because we could really cool groups with good stories to tell, I imagine they don’t go the extra mile because of trying to market to the mass public. Ok sorry for my ramble but I wish and pray that twice has a better narrative too, I liked with you-th because it felt like it was going in that direction.

  • @hola_terry
    @hola_terry 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Also i think jyp did such a good job maturing twice concept from cute stuff like tt, signal ect to fancy, feel special to finally cant stop me and more and more. With this change in direction with the disco vibe I feel like there should be a warning be4 hand. Same happened with sneakers. With skz it is not a problem bcz they are a boy group and have a way loyal fanbase than any other group.(I would say as loyal as army and lilies). But with groups like twice and itzy the general public is more important so for that i guess a proper idea of what the song is gonna be should be conveyed properly. So even when some of the people dont like it, the others will have time to persuade them into supporting and liking it.

only 15 seconds in and oh my goddd the framework thing. fe304: break had amazing trailers and teasers but nothing came of them. the whole buildup to dice, with the rules of play and each member having a different role, that would've been so cool even if only for one comeback! a tarot concept! i also think back to itzy's checkmate promo, they weren't hinting at a greater universe or anything but they were hinting at a GOOD SONG DIFFERENT FROM THEIR TYPICAL TITLE TRACKS and then we got fuckass sneakers. yk people make fun of like magic but that's really as deep as jyp projects go nowadays, coordinated outfits and cool sets and making money. which i guess is what kpop is.

I think part of the issue with the entire SMF era was that even JYP didn’t know what they wanted to do with Twice. Moonlight Sunrise got so much backlash because it was seen as too mature for Twices concepts. Although JY himself said he wanted the idea of a grown up Twice, you could tell they backpedaled when SMF came. The entire album was good but not cohesive. With Youth benefitted from committing back to Twices mature sound but inserting a lot of nostalgia and fun lighter concepts.

My personal reasons why Set Me Free didn't work:
    - The pre-release (Moonlight Sunrise), it almost blocked the opportunity of Set Me Free to be the only one to be focused on since Set Me Free was supposed to be the title track. I hope the pre-release trend will die.
    - The music video was lengthy, it was kinda hard for it to stream TH-cam-wise.
    - The promotions. They initially promoted the song first in America, which I believed, boycotted by the KNetizens, reflected by the KCharts.
    - The concept of the MV doesnt scream "Set Me Free" or "Ready To Be" enough. It feels like they're forced.

Before I say anything, one small correction!! Twice's actually in division 3. Itzy is the only group on division 2!
Ok so, the whole Ready To Be era felt RUSHED, even tho it had the "biggest promo" among recent releases and was announced back in December 2022, which is extremely disappointing to say the least.
JYPE has this thing of announcing projects way ahead of the date and I HATE IT. I mean, 3 MONTHS of rollout >by JYPE< makes any hype negative... that was their first mistake, and it's not new bc we had the same issue in The Feels but w/ the album announced at the end of the MV, at least the gap felt shorther. But TF was SUPER MESSY, the song started being teased TWO 😭 MONTHS ahead of it's release but had a 3 weeks gap between the 1st & 2nd set of teasers. Also, they obviously switched Itzy's comeback date for TF's since the tweet about the single said friday of SEPTEMBER and all of a sudden it changed to Oct 1st.
DIV3 100% changed the concept between announcement and planning. They completely discarted the 'Our Youth' thing and used it for With You-th. It's clear. The shoots for Ready & Be ver. scream last minute, Ready is a fashion crime 😭, the MV to me is very amateurish in quite a lot of scenes, specially this one 0:53, and the set felt small.
I do love all tracks from RTB, but since the start I felt they seem randomly selected from old albums rejects, like strong 2016-18 vibes. And the disco sound isn't bad, just extremely overdone. SMF goes wild live tho, I almost fainted at the concert!!
The MSLR MV had better production than SMF imo, but looked a tad cheap on some parts too, and not that relevant but I think 7/9 of the white fits just aren't it...
Last for both: promotions were just bad. MLSR had nothing but dance challenges and cringe Tiktoks for weeks even after becoming their biggest debut day and week ?? then SMF had plenty of offline promo just to satify fans... Fine, getting their colors on Empire States is very cool, but I wouldn't consider it promo bc no one pays attention to this. Pop up stores aim towards fans too, TV performances are fine even if they don't do much for the effort TWICE has to put in them, playlisting went all to SMF (Eng) for some reason ? + again neither the single or title were sent to radio...
I swear I tried to make the comment smaller, sorry 😅

I think you got the meaning of set me free wrong in the love context. It's about having a crush on someone for a long time but finally setting yourself free by telling them & confessing to them. In this way there is room for the relationship to work. You can clearly understand the meaning from the first few lines of the song.
