I guess most of Indians can actually speak English if they want, but they aren't confident about it. That's why census data shows diffirent results. I mean if you ask a random shopkeeper in English, they'll definitly respond you, but they won't continue the conversatiom as they feel hesitant to speak in English. Also it depends on the type of media they consume. In a census it showed that most of central and north India consume Hindi language media while most of North-East India consumes English media.

    • @death_parade

Census only records you as an English speaker if English is your first language. For most Indians, even ones who are fluent in it, it is their second language. Hence, even folks like Shashi Tharoor do not get labelled as English speakers by the Census of India.

The map talks about cross cousin marriages in Hindus. That basically means a guy/girl can marry the daughter/son of his father's sister and the daughter/son of his mother's brother . This is largely not practiced in Northern India. But it's very prevalent in Tamil Nadu and other Southern Indian states except Kerala.

Lots of people tend to virtue signal on cousin marriages of southern India without even understanding it, as a Tamilian let me explain it more clearly.
    1. No we don't marry between all the cousins.
    2. Only some cousins are treated as brother and sisters, and marriage between the other is legal
    3. And the way to determine which cousin are brother and sister is simple.
    4. If your father has brothers, then their children are you brothers and sisters
    5. Likewise if you mother has sisters, their children are also brothers and sisters
    6. So the marriage is allowed only between children of opposite gender siblings
    7. For example, if you are male and your father has sister then you are allowed to marry her daughter
Now at least you have more information before being judgmental.

So lets talk about culture here so in Hinduism ur gotra represents ur ancestory so mine for eg is bhardwaj gotra and it is inherited from father so me and my sis have same gotra... now the thing is no two same gotra can marry because it will mean u are brother and sister because u will share the same ancestor so my mom's gotra and my dad's gotra is diff thats why they are married my mom is shandilya and my dad is bhardwaj ... so it also means that if i am from jammu and a girl from assam has bhardwaj gotra so i cant marry her even if i dont know her she is my sister .. but it also means that the gotra of my cousins on mother side is shandilya and mine is bhardwaj so i can marry my cousins on my mother's side but there is a tradition not to marry in the same village as of ur mother in north west and east india thats why many hindus refrain from marrying their cousins even if they are allowed because of different gotra but in south it is prevalent that hindus too marry within their mother side cousin because the gotra changes ... so this was the whole thing in hinduism so now dont fight .. acc to science south should follow rest of india and exclude marrying in mother side cousins and village too

So cross cousin marriage in Tamilnadu south India, were done till my parents generation they are in 60's now , from my generation we don't do it at all due to family issues or awareness of genetic problem or we just can't see our cousins as our husband or wife cause we grow up together and get irritated by them 😂 ...... Cross cousin means mom's brother's children or dad's sister's children, and their parents they become our aunty (we call them athai) or uncle (mama).... But if it's mom's sisters or dad's brothers they become our big father (we call them periyappa)or little father ( chittappa ) and from mother side sisters become our big mother (periyamma) or little mother (chinnama) 😋 hopefully you understood 😅
Actually ancestors probably knew who to get married even it's cousins cause if they married direct cousins there was problem of genetic conditions, but it was less in cross cousins

People shouldn't marry in the same Gotras (family lineages), so if your cousins have different gotras, it's normal and allowed to marry. Some people just don't understand things and start doing virtue signalling, first understand how family structures work in India, instead making some vague statments about how you "feel". If you consider someone as your "brother" or "sister", obviously you won't be marrying them but you forget the part where others might not feel the same way. Just because it maybe lost in the north doesn't mean it's specific to south, many ancient Indian traditions were lost in the north due to various factors such as invasions, political pressures and constant and systematic destruction of hindhu/sanathana heritage, don't believe me? Well show me one ancient temple that exists in Delhi.

Cousin marriage is common and accepted in India. Unlike other countries India have different names for the relations. You people call your siblings brother or sister. But here we have different names for elder brother and younger brother, the same for sisters. And for your parents siblings you call everyone uncle, but here sibling from mother side called by different name and siblings of father called by different names. So same for cousins. We don't call everyone cousin. For e.g a daughter of father's brother is not called cousin here they are sister you can't ever think about marry them. But daughter of mother's brother is cousin and eligible to marry. It's scientifically proven. Even my grandparents from my father's side are cousins.

North Indian Hindus have the lowest incidents of cousin marriage. Amongst north Indian Hindus, there are a lot of rules to avoid incest. Patriarchal lineage, mother's father's Patriarchal lineage, even the mother's matriarchal lineage, if traceable. Marriage amongst people of the same village is also taboo (just in case!)
Cousin marriage incidence in North Indian states can be attributed to their Muslim population. However, in East India, Bangladesh and Kerala, cousin marriage rates are very low, despite quite a high Muslim population.
