    Your Thai language has been improved a lot! With one more year in Thailand, you should basically communicate with local people easily. Nice to have you here in Bangkok Thailand Joyce!

  • @kentmemories
    @kentmemories 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    Hi Joy,
    $2k is quite luxury living here 😊. Normal starting salary in BKK is only $500.
    I am sure all Thai want to talk to you but they are not confident in their English
    You can easily find Thai BF who wants to practice his Eng, while you practice your Thai.
    BKK is messy but fun both day and night, but real Thai is outside BKK. Food, air, people, nature are much better and cheaper than BKK.
    Klongtoey is unsafe only if you walk into the middle of Slum after 9pm. MRT Klongtoey station is 100% safe, and I believe BTS/MRT here is one of the world's safest.
    Chill (Sabay Sabay) is part of Thai culture. Another is Kreng-jai, I don't think they have vocab in Eng yet.
    You can practice more Thai by joining club that you like, be it running, cooking, or etc. Or you can try homestay for 1 week.
    Enjoy your time here.
    I am 100% sure every Thai welcome you here with open arms.

    • @AbsoluteZero6714
      @AbsoluteZero6714 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Kreng-Jai is roughly translated as “considering other’s feelings” and “not going out of your way to trouble them.” It’s basically like, even if someone is offering very strongly to do something for you, you should at least show that you don’t want to cause them any more trouble than necessary. It’s kind of like Chinese where you have to pretend you are almost embarrassed to receive help or a gift from someone else even if you want it rather than just telling them “thank you” right away because it makes you look cheap and inconsiderate. 😅

    Sometimes we laugh or smile, it is the first gesture to cover the shyness or don't know what to do at the moment, not because they laugh at the person. Especially when we can't speak or understand the language. 😅

      Wonder if it's anything to do with buddhism

    • @AbsoluteZero6714
      @AbsoluteZero6714 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think Buddhism definitely has something to do with it. The idea of acceptance, of going with the flow, of not holding onto things too tightly and impermanence.
      Culturally Buddhist, but I think most younger Thais these days are more agnostic rather than devout.
      It is kind of like the “cultural Christians” we see in North America who may not consider themselves practicing Christians or Christians, but the ideas are part of the culture.
      But the Buddhism in Thailand has strong Hindu influences because the original Dai were influenced by the Khmer (who took in Indian culture) and India itself, as they went down the Mekong from what is now Yunnan in China.

    This is the first time seeing your video with inbuilt subtitle. For me I can understand 100% without sub, but for most Thai followers having English sub help a lot in understanding your natural speech which is much, much faster than VOA. You do love Thailand. Thai followers also love your look, personality and the way you are.

      Utter waste of time. Thailand is not a country that accepts immigration or provide any long-term prospect for living as a foreigner. Sooner or later you will face visa issues and frustration that comes from heavy pollution, traffic jam, cultural barrier, and corruption. It's a country that you might stay just for a week or month. no more.

    • @AbsoluteZero6714
      @AbsoluteZero6714 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-nq6qf2xn1qUnfortunately I don’t entirely disagree with you. I’ve seen lots of foreigners who have, and still do a visa run to a neighboring or nearby country every 3 months, apply for a new Tourist Visa and re-enter.
      Other than that though, it seems like many 50+ are on a retirement visa, a work or a spouse visa. They increased the cost of the Elite, which I was rejected from.
      The best hope is for a genuinely outward-looking and forward-looking administration to have the power and influence to make things more smoothly for foreigners.
      The military government definitely was conservative, although it’s also under them that weed was made legal. Weird combination yeah.
      It’s a bit of a hassle though renewing a visa. I’ve been to the big immigration building over at Chaeng Watthana pretty early in the morning, got my number in the line and still waited until the afternoon until it was my turn. I was also on ED visa. I thought by arriving early I’d get it done before lunchtime, but turns out that didn’t happen. The food there at least is the good part lol, while you wait. Can you imagine a facility like that in North America or China? Not me.
      Malaysia gives 90 days visa free per visit for US and Canadian passports, and Vietnam has an eVisa policy for US and Canadians that gives 90 days at a time. I’ve stayed for about 3 months in Malaysia so I can confirm this is true.
      But then, Thailand’s just one of those good, even magical places to be.
      As much as I try to tell Joyce about certain things, at the end of the day what I really want is for her to be happy and have a good time because that’s what I care about.
      I’m still keen on finding my own way back to Thailand.

    Joyce, If you like Thai university vibe, you should try to visit Kasetsart university. It has many great food courts, probably the best of all universities in Thailand both cheap price and good food.

    Regarding Thai language, You are doing well, BTW Love = Kwarm Rak or Rak(รัก) "ร" it's pronouce as "R", while Lak(ลัก) actually means "steal" so please becareful. Anyway, with this amount of effort you putting into, your Thai language will be close to perfect in around 3 years (You probably be able to make proper conver to locals within a year)
    Watching Thai series is a very good way to improve(in term of correct accent and appropriateness). Having someone to talk to can improve greatly as well but since you are an introvert so maybe it's not an option, however having people to help correcting the specific words or sentenses could be really helpful though.
    Since Thai language has many shades and not every locals speak Thai with the same accent hence you may need to choose your role model carefully. If you are a GMMTV fan, I recommend to try immitate these following actors/actresses;
    - Tay Tawan (calm, nice tone, good pronunciation)
    - Namtan Tipnaree (elegant, misterious, perfect pronunciation)
    - Film Rachanun (confident, charming, clear pronunciation)
    - Jane Ramida (cool, decent pronunciation)
    please avoid;
    - Prim Chanikarn (Unclear pronunciation)
    - Dew Jirawat (Unclear pronuciation, a little careless)
    Hope this helps.

    So agree with liking Thailand because of who you become! I think I like the country not necessarily because I had a nice trip (there were so many things that popped up that I could've complained about) but rather what I learnt about myself while I was there while solving all those things 🙂 On another note I spent an hour trying to find the engineering building at Chula on my trip there and never found it 🤣Found the economics building instead 😅

    ISTP here krub.
    Let me give you trick to practice Tonal language like Thai in a way that will stick into your brain for good.
    1. Write down consonant and pronouce it
    2. Write down each vowels and pronouce it.
    3. Combine basic consonants and vowels to become word and then pronounce it. At this stage you got the basic word which form the base sound of word by each consonants and vowels. After a couple set of mix between consonant and vowels, you'll get an idea and familirized yourself on word construction and pronounciation.
    4. Add additional tone marker for basic words and pronounce it.
    All of above stage you may need to practice - Write according to the words after teacher. If you are learning alone, you just open the sound and write it down that word. You need to maste it first before jumping into anything else. This is the most important fundamental of Thai language.
    Then you can go with basic reading that will help you understand and memorize the sound and how to write simple words together. More you pronounce + write and read the basic, more you have strong foundation when you speak. For speaking, you may need to keep using basic sentences as much as you can. Repeadly in every steps will help you understand overtime.
    Drop me message if you need help about Thai Language. It's easier than Mandarin since we got certain set of letters to construct word. Cheers !!!

    For me when I was in the city I used to pay around 6-7k for rent. I live near the workplace so I can walk to work. Not sure about the safety.
    20k THB is enough for my living life since I don't need to pay rent anymore.
    it would be around 30k THB including rent.
    Here is my expense list.
    - 12,000 for food (I can eat steak, salad, fruit, and healthy foods around 400 THB a day)
    - 1,000 internet and mobile
    - 3,000 for electric bill and water bill
    ~= 16,000 monthly
    4,000 for other expenses (not monthly fixed)
    Traveling cost (not much since I work remotely), Clothes, Electronic (Water purifier, Laptop, Washing Machine, etc)
