As a Thai, I can say Nong Ed speaks Thai clearer than a lot of my friends(who are Thais)😅👍
#Hongkonger #hongkongese

I am a chinese-Thai, born and raised in Bangkok. My parents both immigrated from Canton, China during the WW2. I must say Ed speaks Thai very fluently and no accent at all. A lot of Thais are somehow chinese-raced. I understand a bit of cantonese and mandarin, but when my mom speaks cantonese to me I answer her in Thai. Haha. Hope you enjoy life in Bangkok Joyce 😘
Ed is amazing! I think his Thai pronunciation is way better than me as a Thai born and raised in Thailand 🤣 Well done!
This Hong Kong guy speak Thai clearly like local. Excellence
#Hongkonger #hongkongese
I’m Thai and when i was young, i studied Mandarin that I was told it is more usable globally. But I found that Cantonese is more attractive language, and I love to hear that.
Ed is so fluent in Thai! Wow! I used to study in HK, was a fun experience as a Thai student, love HK and Cantonese too! Good to hear Cantonese spoken in BKK 🙃
As a Hker also studying Thai, I do think that some Thai words are really similar to Cantonese! Both languages are very interesting! 😆
Is there word for dllm
Yeah! When I first randomly heard Thai music as as Cantonese speaker, I wasn't really paying attention, but I thought it was actually Cantonese! There is something with the tones and endings.
And of course that old 草蜢 song samplling an old Thai tune certainly increased the popularity of Thai music.
This was great! Well done Ed, knowing multiple languages and speaking them well opens up many opportunities for you. Best wishes going forward!
Damn his English is so good as well. Better than some of my friends who studied overseas. Either he studied in international school or he is just naturally talented...?
7:13 เยี่ยม in this context would be "great!". It has many meanings haha but good job!
If Ed didn't say he's from Hong Kong, I would have thought he is Thai! Joyce's Thai is much improved too 👍
Woooo!! Ed 好勁啊🥹🥹🥹 proud of you😭
yayyy!! a new video. i love your videos you make me wanna run from my country to Thailand so baaaad
Learning Thai is not easy, I'm teaching myself from TH-cam, been doing it over a year slowly, but it's very difficult.
Keep it going man, one step at a time. Tenacity does pay off in the long run. One day you might have a breakthrough and suddenly, learning becomes very smooth (and fun). Cheers !
@@gerryye3702Yea, just have to push through, I can speak basic Thai now, I live in Bangkok and each day I chip away at it. I should find some people to do language exchange.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nong Ed speaks perfect Thai and P' Joyce has improved A LOT.
What a good ep..
Tri languages in one ep and a lot of cute Thai speaking from you both. Smile while listening to your Thai speaking :)
Joyce I love this video and your Thai is awesome! I agree with Ed Thai script is on the hard side of things when it comes to the Thai language and I too have difficulty when talking about politics and religion as well in the Thai language.
The university is such a fantastic space, loved that you were able to explore the area also.
Too short ! could you make an episode 2 , asking Ed how did he pick up the accent , how to learn Thai ? he is so......good ! please please please ! Tones and pronunciation drive me crazy
Thump up for Nong Ed when he speaks Thai, his accent is so clearly.
Ed you’re so awesome and joyce you’re so pretty i love your videos so much ❤
Woww ! What an amazing video 🎉🎉 loved it ❤
4:21 Before the modern Chinese nation-state in 1927 ROC and 1949 PRC
Old Chinese in Thailand from South China(Teochew, Hokkien, Hainanese, Cantonese) They not speak Mandarin
Mandarin is the language of the modern Chinese nation-state.
The old Chinese had no sense of nationality.
National consciousness is created later. by nationalists from each country
So that people who don't know each other and who are different will feel like one nation.
Ed spoke Thai so clear as same as Thai native.
In my youth about 55+ years ago, there were fewer than 10 female engineering students at Chula. On the reverse side, there were usually fewer than 10 male students at Arts faculty. The two faculties are neighbors with opposite genders. BTW, there is only one university that begins with name and followed with university tag, whereas other universities begin with university tag + name. Give some examples: Chulalongkorn Mahawitthayalai, Mahawitthayalai Thammasat, Mahawitthayalai Mahidol etc.
Chulalongkorn Rajawittayalai is buddish study university.
dude speaks canto in thai tones, soft and gentle
narak Ed ☺️
Nong Ed not even speak like Thai native ( I mean his accent ) He even have a actor vibe in Thai series too !!
Most Chinese in Thailand are ชาวแต้จิ๋ว 潮州人, but my mom’s father was Cantonese. He came from China and lived in Thailand for the rest of his life. I can tell that Ed speaks Thai better. So my mom is half Cantonese half Thai, she can’t speak Chinese at all.
ED speaking thai so natively 👍
Joyce, I haven't watched your clips in a while because I'm busy.
Now I feel that your mannerisms are very similar to those of Thai women. I know the love of Thailand from within you. 😊
Thank you for making content for Thailand. Both present good things to others and make them more aware. and give ideas to encourage Thai people Thailand is getting better. Wish you happiness. And have fun making clips.
I'm rooting for you. 😊
Interesting & informative vid~! 😊🙆🏻♀
There was an old scholarly book written called "The Chinese in Thailand." Also you might enjoy the Thai reader and Thai Writing book of Mary Haas. She was a distinguished anthropologist and linguist. I enjoyed studying Thai for about 50 years but you two are better than me. In my opinion Chinese is harder than Thai. I loved the Lao language too. Good luck kids.
Cantonese and Mandarin are different languages, the Hongkongers speak Cantonese
Another really nice guest 🫶
❤ awesome Ed
You speak Thai clearer than my grandfather who came from Guangdong and had lived in Thailand more than 20 years.
Awww! You guys are cute. You might have heard this already, but I want to say it again - Ed's Thai accent is wonderfully flawless. If you hadn't mentioned being from Hong Kong, everyone would definitely think you're Thai. Wishing you both success and happiness living in Thailand.
Adorable you two 😊
Nong Ed speaks perfect Thai. Joyce's Thai is good too. Cantonese reminds me films, Andy Lau, etc.
So fun watching your videos, Joyce! Lots of love from Thai Native 🪷☀️💜🇹🇭. Hope we can meet on day!
joyce, more collabs with ed please....ed should have his own youtube channel
Super impressed w/ Nong Ed's Thai 🤩
Love this channel 😂😂
Oh 3 languages, Thai, Cantonese and English.
3 in 1 😉
Wow, Ed did speak like a native!
There's not a single mistake in his tone. His thai so perfect.
Keep it up Ed and Joyce! Great to see some cool content created from people from similar background. (I am from Hong Kong and studying abroad too). Surprised to know that Mike also did a year study in Hong Kong. No wonder you all got some Hong Kong and foreign vibes at the same time.
I'm so bias I love Bangkok so much! But learning the language will be one of the biggest struggles for me
Beautiful smile face of Joyce 💜 hello nong Ed aussi 😊
I wish your video a bit longer like at least 15 minute Joyce 😄 i like you video, and i don't know if you still check out Thai university but if you do, Thammasat Thaprachan you should visit this one, the vibe in the university, places around and the river was so nice there.
@@shumtom3139 Definitely a language. An awesome language too!
Ed nailed it! The enunciation was superb and clean. I did however hear he said "จริงหงอ(我)ครับ" instead of "จริงหรอครับ". If so, something to watch out for in the future.
So many similar words between Thai and Chinese. One word I discovered recently is เก้าอี้ - 膠椅 😄
Yes, if you observe carefully, a lot of Thai words can be related to Chinese words, like เอว(腰)ช่าง(匠)เพื่อน(朋)เพื่อนซี้(死友) เอา(要)One interesting finding is that the word for drawing in Thai is วาด and แต้ม it's actually 画 and 点😅
Actually, "จริงหงอ(我)ครับ" makes him sound much more like native. Most urban (BKK) Thai teen speak like this and it's going well with Ed's age and personality.
The "จริงหรอครับ" is correct but more formal/textbook-ish.
You may be surprised to see the word ตัวเหี้ย originated from ตั่วเฮีย of ภาษาแต้จิ๋ว for the meaning of 大兄(or 大佬 for Cantonese). Because the local Siamese got beef with those Chinese immigrants due to opium disputes at time. 😅
@henrytan5707 Thai is part of Tai-Kadai language group. and if i remember correctly Thai/Tai-Kadai as a whole has a lot of similarities with ancient Chinese words.
Absolutely Loved Every Second
Wow both of you so awesome!
I watched several of your TH-cam videos and I enjoyed every one of them, especially this one in particular. When you and your friend from Hong Kong walked around Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, it had brought back many good memories. I walked in the same area 53 years ago as an engineering freshman. In addition, I understood very well when both of you spoke Cantonese. I am a Cantonese, born in Thailand.
Prasit
Boston.
This video inspires me to study Thai more 📖🇹🇭🔥
come back to Thailand soon na 🤓
Welcome to Thailand both of you, if my memory is not wrong, i ever heard that .. roughly around 27-29% of Whole Population in Thailand now were from China related ancestor (Both direct and in-direct). So our culture now quite a bit mixing with Chinese + Indian + Local Southeast asia
I like the fact that Ed can switch between thai, Cantonese and English. Pretty much similar to me and my thai gf where we flip between hokkien and english if specific items where we cannot find hokkien to describe.
Nong Ed speak very good Thai. Nong Joyce will get much better once day. Both of them put a lot of attention to study Thai. Therefore they nail it. ❤🎉 Enjoy your stay in Thailand 🎉
Ed tone so native. Incredible!!
I dream of living in Thailand, I'm so happy I found your youtube channel to get me through until I get to move there!
Wow Ed your Thai is like you are a Thai person! If I met you, I probably can’t tell you are hker. Your “ร” is better than mine! And Joyce your Thai is very improved 👍
As an outsider overseas Chinese of HK lineage just observing from afar, since I was young, I always knew HK had an affinity for Thailand based on tons of movies being shot there. Off the top of my head, I can recall Bruce Lee's Fists of Fury (aka The Big Boss), Bangkok Dangerous by the Pang Bros., plus Heavenly Mission with Ekin, just to name a few.
One more thing Chula is only 1 university in Thailand that name come before university .. so if someone spoke wrong such as Mahawittayalai chula .. that make sense
Excellent both of you
I like both of your cantonese accent. Sound kindly.
Wow Nong Ed’s Thai is very impressive 👏🏼👏🏼
This is different and great to see because Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mainland China, USA...are the usual popular choices.
Engineer department! I love that place as someone graduated from there.
there will be running event this sunday and I couldn't wait to return
Eddy is so local with the way he talking. Awesome.
To both of you , your Thai are too cute . 😍
The school bus reminds me the days when I studied in faculty of medicine HKU, same style shuttle bus from the main campus to the faculty buildings.
Man! This made me want to have a language exchange sessions with you Joyce
Your Thai is awesome.
Glad to know Joyce speaks cantonese. Also the number 9 (gao in Thai is gau in Cantonese). Also coffee (gafee in Thai and cantonese) is the the same. There are other words too that I have found by accident in my very limited Thai that are similar to cantonese.
8 too....
Thai have two number systems, one from sanskrit:PIE and another is share or borrow from southern china.
Cantonese might have influenced, but to be more specific , taejew and hakka have more contribution on Thai word.
For us, taejew chinese calls
1 jek
2 norw
3 sa
4 si
5 ngow
6 luck
7 chix
8 poew
9 kao
10 jub
more close than cantonese.
Ho lek!! You should do more videos together lah!
Keep up your good work Joyce. Your Thai is getting better and better.
One thing come across into my mind when watching channel is that you look like "น้องโกรัน" (N'Gorun), an influencer, youtuber from Chulalongkorn university. She's getting more famous these days after appearing as a guest in Nickynachat channel. I find that you both have similar inspirations, character and appearance.
Love to see you both meet up in a video one day. 😁
A lot of Thai-Chinese are Teochew from Shantou, Guangdong. They speak Teochew which is, in my understanding, similar to Cantonese. There are Teochew words that Thai people borrowed. Most of those are words related to foods. For example, joke (porridge), see-ew (soy sauce), mi/teow (noodle), and cha (tea). Moreover, the Thai language is a Tai-Kadai language originating from southern China. So certain Thai words are similar to Chinese words. 3 is one of those and it is not the only number that sounds similar to a Chinese number. Actually, Thai 3-10 and 10000 are quite similar to Cantonese. Thai 0 came from Sanskrit. For 1,2, there are several ways to say 1,2 in Thai. The standard one does not sound like Cantonese 1,2. However, for 2, you can see this one from the way Thais say 20 (yi-sip). Yi is 2.
I've read from somewhere that word "kaw-ie" (chair) is a chinese loan word too. Any one clarify? Since ancient time we Thais sit on the floor or matt not a chair. We adopted the chair not too long, may be in early period of Rattanakosintra era.
@@kittenastrophy5951 Wiktionary website says Kaw-ie is a Teochew word. It is a pretty good website for checking loan words.
So interesting ❤

Good one Joyce. How many times have you been trying to trip over outside the engineering facilitie.😅😅😅😅😅😅❤. Keep them coming girl. Regards Michael.
I laughed too when she said that. 😂
I never tripped there 😈

The one flaw that is so common among Thais is they don't roll their "R" when speaking informally.
Another thing, there are many formal words in the Thai language that are actually Indian (Sanskrit/Hindu), including the script. Many Thais don't know this lol
What a clever guy; obviously has a talent for languages.
Super Awesome both.
