Preserving Original Finish on Lane Acclaim Tables from 1965

  • A one owner set of Lane Acclaim living room tables is examined and the original finish is retained after cleaning, waxing and minor repairs. Video documentation of what an original finish should look like. NOTE: This set finally sold at retail on February 25, 2019 for $700 plus tax. It took significantly longer to sell this set than other sets I have refinished. In all fairness, however, the demand for Lane Acclaim in our area has waned during the time these were for sale. I hope this data helps as you think about how to handle furniture you may be selling.

    One reason the walnut on top is lighter coloured than the shelf underneath is that walnut fades with exposure to light. It is just the opposite of cherry which gets darker with exposure to light.

    I just inherited this exact set from my father. It was the original set my parents bought when they were married and every nick and ding in the tables is caused by my brother and myself as children. Needless to say, I'd rather lightly refinish them and keep all that family history intact for a new generation. I'll be attempting to follow your video. Glad you found a buyer for this set. Wow, I can't believe this set sells for that much. I've seen the set online, refinished to perfection for as high as $2200.

      They were pretty hot in our market for awhile, but things have cooled off quite a bit.

    This was so cool, I also do some minor restoration and I have seen so many acclaim pieces but that have always been refinished. I have never seen an original finish on one until I just found one at my local thrift store (for $15!!!) and it looked original and in great shape. So I appreciate this info and speaking to how rare an original finish is but also showing it to see. Thank you!

    I relay liked the approach you took on this project. it makes these tables look even more prestige.

      Thank you. It was unusually difficult for me leave the "patina" as it was. Time will tell if I need to refinish them after all. Thanks for watching!

    I believe you did the right thing, protecting the wood. And keeping the oringle finish. I' d buy that knowing what you did. Good call!😊

    Yeah, I love the more sympathetic take, especially on nice pieces like these. Good job man! Looks way better than the refinished contrast look.

    Great video - I am refinishing some acclaim right now, and one looks to be original finish. But there are a few long deep gouges that have broken the finish, so I think I will have to go ahead and strip/sand/lacquer. But it is good to confirm that the coloring on my table looks the same as the ones in this video - very golden, low contrast. Thanks again for your channel!

    Thank you for this. My new plan for my cocktail table and step tables is to give them a nice, gentle cleaning and then see whether I can do as you did and live with a few warts rather than sacrificing the original finish. One of the step tables may be too far gone, as it was stored in my parents' attic for a number of years with very hot, dry CA summers. The other lived in an inaccessible corner of the living room and fared a bit better, but is missing a bunch of finish on the ash front for some reason.

    I watch a lot of you guys,Plus old restoration of tools. And the history must play a big roll. who used it?who where they? what did they do. Its all, I dare say a roll in the reason why,you want to treat it with baby hands. your a credit to your talent.

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I sometimes let my imagination run away with me and I do get attached to old things for that reason. I love old things and the connection to times past. It's probably the basis for my attraction to old tools, vises and old, high quality furniture. Thanks for you comment and best regards to you.

    So helpful. I just purchased a '65 lamp table, love it. I didn't notice until I got it home that one of the top boards is quite a bit lighter than the others, creating a striped effect. I see something similar on your coffee table. I didn't plan anything restoration wise for mine. BUT I fear that stripe will drive me nutty. Is there a way for an amateur to somehow color that darker to match the rest of the top without sanding and lacquering again? (I pretty well know the answer, but just thought I'd ask-lol)

  • @sarahl9287
    @sarahl9287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The different color tone in the walnut wood (light vs. dark), from my understanding due to the wood being from a different part of the walnut tree. The naturally darker color is from more mature walnut...closer to the center, older, and possibly heart wood.

    Thinking on the brace back Windsor that have now taken completely apart to reglue (only two tight joints in the many, many, joints) think will wet sand like you did as then can leave the wear but protect the wood. Already tried wiping down with solvent and got up the brown chalky layer, as suspected from Great Grandmother regularly waxing (her home was pungent with it and wish could find again as comforting and best smell of all the homes of family). Be like her to use a dark brown on all her furniture even if light colored. Still tempted to leave the ends of the arms where warn smooth and polished, doubt can get that back and should be not at risk. Plan already to leave the glue squeeze out where Ben fixed loose legs before (was a woodworker).

    I just bought a coffee table. Haven't seen it yet, but the pictures look pretty mint. $150 - picking it up in the morning. I guess no one knows what those tables looked like when they were new. The light wood might have been very light and darkened with age and the walnut veneer was probably as dark as the bottom shelf. It might be the original finish but it couldn't be the original color.

    the comment by Blaine is correct , upper pieces are lightened by sunlite , lower protected by furniture, etc .Yes this is original finish
    lightened by UV.

    I just purchased a beautiful Lane Acclaim desk for cheap. It is in great condition other than the top. Some varnish flaking, a couple water ring marks (much like the coffee table)... What can I do to freshen up the top without having to totally refinish the rest of the desk - as it is all in good condition.

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mask off the part of the desk that doesn't need refinishing and go ahead and do the top. In my recent video where I do the top of a Duncan Phyfe-style dresser, I do just that. Good luck.

    I just purchased a pair of Lane glass top boomerang side tables . I believe that is what they call them. I believe they are walnut and are in fair condition .
    The corner joints are coming apart . How should i deal with that and should I use the same methods as in the video? Thanks

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to say without being there. I fix loose joints in a bunch of my videos. Always best if you can get the joint completely apart, clean it, glue it and clamp it. Sometimes you have to cheat a bit and open the joint the best you can and use the appropriate adhesive to give you the best results possible for your situation. Best regards!

    Hi I've been enjoying your lane acclaim videos! I just picked up a lane acclaim dining set and buffet from my local restore- the ferrules are missing all the way around. Any idea of the dimensions and/or where I can pick up replacements?

    I have a lane table I was hoping to find out some more about. I took some pictures and would like to get your opinion on it. Do you have an email address I can send the photos and my questions to? That is, if you could be so kind to do so, and if you have the time. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      lostmountainrestoration@gmail.com. I'll do my best, but I'm certainly not an expert on all of the Lane lines. If you grab the date on your table (read the serial number backwards), then get on-line and search for a Lane catalog for that year, you may find what you are looking for - good luck!

    Hey, I am looking at a small table from the Lane 'Copenhagen' line to refinish. Does this line use the same 'tinting' technique after refreshing/refinishing? If so, can you recommend any aerosol can brands (Mohawk?) to color it. I don't have a compressor/sprayer, just simple stuff at home. thx :-)

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with that line, but most manufactured furniture is colored that way. Mohawk makes a line of aerosol toners and if you search around on line, you can find color chips to help you match which one you need. Good luck!

    I bought a variation of these tables for my brother years ago at a rummage sale. Beautiful tables did they ever sell or did you fully restore them?

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They remain for sale in original condition. To be fair, though, another set, fully restored is also not moving. Furniture sales have slowed drastically here and continue to do so as more and more people downsize and the market is flooded. We'll see if things change anytime soon. Thanks for watching.

    Nice! I used to work for Lane (upholstery division) in Saltillo, Ms. Never knew they made wood furniture. It was a good company to work for. Sad though, because they are no longer in operation. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a provincial dresser and chest of drawers that I have been stressing over, I want to paint it but don't want to lose it's value, it just looks sooo dark, and the finish is "gummed up". What do you think? Do I need to strip?

    • @LostMountainRestoration

    please note you said the legs are walnut, they are NOT walnut - they are ash that are stained dark. When you filled the scratch on the leg with a Sharpie (I cringed when you did that -Jesus you sharpied a wonderful old table) the wood was very light in color - NOT walnut it is Ash.

    • @LostMountainRestoration
      @LostMountainRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Yes, I know the legs are ash. I may have mis-spoke or perhaps I was referring to the color, I don't recall. Sorry if it was confusing to you. The leg tips are painted. I could have dabbed on some flat black paint and hoped it matched, used a lacquer based coloring pen, powdered color in shellac, or any number of tools to color out that spot. Sharpies are a shellac based product (the markers dissolve in alcohol). They are quick, easy and get the job done. If those leg tips are ever stripped, it will come right out. If they are ever painted, the paint will go right over it. I'm not sure why that technique was so shocking to you, but I thought I'd at least let you know why I did what it did. When I do full restorations on these Acclaim pieces, I simply re-paint the leg tips. If you check my other Acclaim videos, you will see that technique as well. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Best regards.
