- In this video I demonstrate the removal a the lower unit followed by the replacement of the water pump. With this particular model engine there was the option for a standard or larger "bigfoot" lower unit which this on is.
Great job man, very thorough!!
thank you so much for a first class presentation covering all the important topics and how to suggestions, great work!
Thank you for the excellent feedback!!
I am glad you are telling the torque specs.
Excellent presentation!!!
great video, the water from my engine comes out in flots. I have also changed the impeller and the gaskets. Mercury orion 60 hp from 2016
No sure what Flots is
Good video with some valuable steps, my gasket seal side is up towards the housing on my 2017 merc 90 hp 4 stroke eng.
Yes one faces up the other down, one seals out water the other gear lube in
I think he means that the Gray Seal side of the gasket is supposed to Face upward instead of downward like you put it. I believe he is correct because that's how it looks in my instructions
Great job
NEIT welding grad and I noticed the name-- small world :) Thanks for the video. No way to get the students to do my 300 hour maintenance, huh? 😜
NEIT is the best technical college in the USA!
Hope all is well, Stay Safe!
Guy in another video red loctite his housing screws and you lube them. After watching you have to do the cool hammer tap trick I don't want to loctite mine. Thanks for the video.
Who would you red loctite them? It will never come apart, and this is a maintenance item! Thanks for letting others know.
Thank You.
Where did you get that base holder for the unit to make repairs easier?
Will be doing this on two motors
I hope you can answer me. I’m trying to troubleshoot my electrical problem on my 2012 200hp hpdi Yamaha. I turn the key nothing happens. Battery is charged I changed to fuses starter starter coil. Took pictures before I did any removals. Now it’s all connected I turn the key and nothing I mean nothing. Can you tell me where I should start trouble shooting at. I’ve tested to parts I replaced all checked out.
Please any help I would greatly appreciate.
Are you in neutral when taking off that drive ? Also, what about the Speedo hose in there ?
The seal side of the gasket on my 60 has 4 stroke merc. was directional and can only go up.
The seal side of the gasket was up when I removed the original water pump off my 2017 90 hp and the diagram shows seal side up on the merc kit.
So there is no shift shaft to "unlink" up top before bringing down the LU?
Not on that engine. Just the fasteners.
What is the best way to flush sand out of a mercury 60 hp 4-stroke? I have sand in my t-stat, thanks for your time.
I would take the lower unit off and the thermostat housing and try back flushing the sand back through the housing. Put a bucket under the midsection to see how well this works. You will also need to remove the tell tale fitting and try flushing it backwards as well to clean out that passage.
Hello. it is 4 bolts and a nut , holding that lower unit. I put LU back holding it with just a nut tight, everything works fine shifts in gear prop spinning, then put the rest of the bolts and it doesn’t shift in gear. Any idea?
Dealer
Does the silicone on the gasket go toward wear plate??
On mine it went toward the housing from the factory and it shows it that way on the diagram. He does it backwards in this video.
How do I find what impeller kit I need I have a 2015 mercury 60 hp four stroke
Locate the model and serial # tag on the engines midsection and then go to
www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog
At 11:19 you say that the seal gasket silicone goes down towards the plate, I seen other video where they put the silicone side gasket facing up, which is the corect way.
Flat wide surface gets the sealant, sharp or small contact surface makes a tight seal
Anyone know what the plate is called at minute 3? The one held on by the bolt that has a wasp nest attached to it.
3:04
If you mean the bottom of the housing, that is the bottom of the midsection
How to change seal when you remove the plate the black round seal
Buy the base it comes with the oring and seal installed
Do you put it in forward gear or leave it in neutral the whole time lmk.
I put it together in Neutral and rotate the flywheel to line up the splines during reinstallation.
The service manual shows red Loctite on the (4) bolts you were struggling with. Wouldn't some heat be required to loosen those up?
Blue loctite is the norm for these fasteners and yes a little heat works fine. I like to try to not discolor the case if at all possible
Hi Ted. I have enjoyed your video. My 60 merc bigfoot leaks water out from what appears the front of the pump when flushing with the engine opreating or not. I have not dismantled anything yet. From your Merc experience, can you suggest what component might have failed? Note: I have still a good stream from my tell tail
Without seeing it, it may be normal leakage. There is a drain hole under the pump base which drains out so it can't freeze over the winter.
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 it comes out likes jet when the motor is running on the muffs
Like a jet
Missing gasket or plate. Sounds like it needs to be taken apart for inspection
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 I did buy the motor and boat new. I plan to take it apart for a close inspection tomorrow. Thank you for your valuable input.
Is part 2 coming soon?
Just loaded it up!! Thanks for the reminder and enjoy!
