5 years later and this video is still helpful! I was about to buy a Playstation slim because my fat boy wasn't reading blue discs even though it used to. I decided to give this a try, but was skeptical because the qtip didn't even seem like it picked up any dirt. But holy cow, it ACTUALLY WORKED! I'm so excited to play smuggler's run again. As a kid I used to wonder why some disks worked and some none, sister recently bought a game from our childhood which unfortunately didn’t work, I’m now 25 and having experience in hardware and stuff (mostly PC) I thought I’d try and clean the lens and see if it works, and magically it did! Thank you so much for this tutorial!

Ive had a non working ps2 with lots of games sitting around for years. I did attempt to clean the laser, but turns out I was only cleaning the lense. I watched your vid, and found I was missing a set. Afterwards my ps2 is reading now. Thank you!
😱 SPEECHLESS!! I Was about ready to toss my ps2 in the garbage . With alot of free time during my vacation I decide to search up and look before getting rid of ps2. I only own two blue disks from my PS2 library, finally got around to doing this and it it fixed one disc but not the other, super weird, but feeling great that it worked, thank you!
Have you tried the the electrical tape trick it’s crazy how that works you just put to pieces of electrical tape on each side of the disc where the art work is and ever since I did that my blue disc don’t give me problems
Is it easier to take the laser out to get that black cover off? I’m gently under the cover, but it just pulls the whole laser up and not just the cover, I don’t want to mess stuff up attached to the laser trying to remove that black cover
Mine reads Gta Sa perfectly at startup, but every time im starting "Big Smoke" mission, it gets a disc read error... This did the trick! The console has never been opened, so no warrantly now i guess... :(

I think I fucked it. I did as you did, rubbing the lens and laser with a q-tip, but I think I’ve just made it worse. The game I’m trying to get loading better is just acting worse. The main menu’s 3D space has gone from loading instantaneously to popping in quite jarringly. I got past the loading screen I couldn’t before, but the scene after was very janky, audio issues, wouldn’t progress. I skipped this scene and the loading screen after just kept scrolling. On a second boot up the game is just going to a dark screen before the main menu. Have I missed something? I just want to play some abandonware :(
Mine will try to read the first time and will click while trying to read, than it stops, in about 30 seconds it will try to read again and works. It happens like that every time. It spins much faster when it does read correctly. Is it stuck trying to figure out what kind of disk it is?
Why did you remove the bottom case to clean the laser? Unnecessary.....and you don't remove the plastic cover on the laser. Really, really dumb to show people this...
There are like 8 things that can go wrong with a ps2 laser not reading discs. This is just one scenario. And if this is the issue you're having this is exactly what you do. I can tell you haven't worked on many consoles.

Awesome. I've been trying all the wrong things for a year. Adjusting pots cleaning the lens but never thought of the laser underneath. Fantastic
This worked on the really dirty ps2 that had chocolate stuffed in the disc tray but not the perfectly clean one for some reason

I just fired up my ps2, 20 years going strong. Used this guide to clean the lens and it works like a charm again.

I cleaned the top of the laser but not the bottom underneath, maybe that’s why it still is showing the browser screen 🤷🏻♂️.

My PS2 will read the black back PS1 games but not the actually PS2 games anymore. Will this help?

Sadly this didn’t work, my ps2 was bought refurbished and so my laser isn’t the original one. And the cover on it can’t be removed 😢
my ps 2 plays the games, but when i put a dvd in it refuses to start the dvd. same with cd's. is it the same problem??

You have to push down on the top of your screwdriver then slowly push on it to get it to go. I had the the same problem
Ight well at first I thought it was the screw that was rusty or something cuz it going to be my first time unscrewing it

This didn’t help me. Tried doing this when my system would only play ps2 games and it broke it completely :(

What model ps2 you have, the 30000 is the worst
Dang it didn’t work for me. It spins for 5 seconds then buzzes then spins a couple times then stops. Anyone else having this issue?

There is another peice of glass underneath the focusing mechanism. If it's dusty what are you going to do?
