Ive fixed around 5 of these myself. If youre just replacing the laser there is no need to remove the dvd drive from the ps2 or to take that center bracket out. Easiest way is to just remove 2 screws on the side of the tray to take the disk tray completely out. This lets you take the opportunity to grease(White Grease) up the gears and check on the belt (always good to replace). As a note some models do require the whole dvd drive to be taken out to get to the belt and gears on those models theres a few screws on the bottom not just on the top. If your tray has no issues like getting stuck or opening and closing when it shouldnt then you can skip that step. To take that laser our when you take the tray off just remove the top right rail screw that the laser is moving on, flip up, remove the cable, and then just slide it out. All thats left is to follow the rest of what hes doing minus the soldering and put the tray back in.

EDIT - May have found it now. Thanks for the video.
Hi Slot1Gamer - @9:36 you point out that white bit of plastic that connects to the screw that moves the laser. Do you know where I can get a hold of a new one? My launch day PS2's one has completely worn down and the teeth that it uses to hold onto the screw are completely gone, meaning the laser cannot move at all.
I really want a replacement but cannot for the life of me find one. Want to keep the ol PS2 going for as long as possible. It's a UK launch model - SCPH 30003.

you can find them on ebay. I purchased a new one myself, the only one i found was 4 to purchase and another 4 to ship (rip off). Once you replace it tho id recommend going to a local hardware store and purchasing a tube of white grease. Take a q-tip and spread some of it on your worm gear (the corkscrew thing that moves the laser) when you replace that arm.

I don't understand, why did you use the soldering iron? What exactly did you do?

    • @Slot1Gamer
      @Slot1Gamer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is a blob of solder connecting two traces on the flex cable.
This shorts out the power rail to ground to help avoid electrostatic shock in packaging.
It’s like how some companies will use foil covered foam blocks on DIP package chips, short all the legs to prevent ESD damaging the chip.
Kind of like a poor mans faraday cage

How reliable are the Chinese made PS2 lasers? Is it like the PS1 lasers where 1 out 10 could work?

I ordered one from china, was excepting a noname laser and I got an original Sony laser. It's exactly the same as in my ps2.

Rondo 1 does anyone have an answer to this question, it’s the difference between 5 and £20. I don’t want to spend £5 on a thing I’ll have to replace in another 15 years again. The official Sony ones are what caused the trouble in the first place so I don’t know if that’s even the best option

Should I replace my khs 400b laser with a khs 400c? I've read that the khs 400c is better but I don't know if it's compatible with all of the fat 400b systems...

Replaced mine and now the thing goes way too far and bumps into the bottom, makes a very loud grinding noise when turning on but it reads discs.

I replaced my laser with a brand new one and the laser beam won't turn on. when I start ps2 the lens pushes up into place but the actual red laser beam doesn't turn on. Laser unit doesn't move back in forth, just stays in one position no beam being projected. Please help I paid high amount for new one.

check to make sure it doesn't have a ESD protect point (it's a blob od solder joining two traces together)
Also check the ribbon cable that goes from the laser to the motherboard, they are pretty fragile

+Slot1Gamer it turns out the laser I bought is a KHS-400C and the Original laser that was in my PS2 is a model KHS-400B so the one I purchased isn't compatible I guess. I purchased it on eBay and the seller specified that it was compatible with my model of PS2 without telling me the actual laser model. Sorry for inconvenience.

I changed the lens of the PS2 but when reading the disc it makes a horrible noise and in the end it does not read the disc, I know that the laser works because I tried it on another ps2. What I can do ??

    • @Slot1Gamer

      Could be an alignment issue
Probably slipping on the worm gear :)
