Just wanted to add my 2 cents - it was the opposite way for me. Loosening the screws did nothing to solve it. In order to get the PS2 to stop closing the disc tray on its own, I actually had to TIGHTEN those two screws! Once I had really tightened them up well, the tray would travel its full required distance and stay open. Anyway, thanks for helping me pinpoint the source of the problem in any case!

@@vladimirputin4370 I fixed mine without even taking it apart turn it on press the eject button while the tray to coming out help it a little to make sure it comes all the way out then flip the console and mine had dust that I blew out and now it opens all way and doesn’t retract
Going through all my old retro stuff and found my old PS2 with the same issue and this fixed it. I found though i had to try different screw tightening looser and tighter a few times to get the right tightness for my machine. Like some other people are saying you have to play with it some
I gotta try this. Bought a region-modded fat PS2 but this has been an issue, and when dealing with rare imported games, on a rare system, I really get nervous. Hopefully messing around with those screws fixes it. Thanks for this video!
Just saying here for anyone who watches this video, the problem is actually in the sensor underneath the disc tray, that white plastic piece that runs sideways and touches the sensor, just make a wedge and increase the size of it to touch the sensor more firmly.
I did this and it worked- HOWEVER- I have to wonder if this issue stems from the rails losing their lubrication over the years? If thats so, isnt a more permanent solution lubing up the rails? I dont like the idea of loosening the screws as a solution as Im worried something could get misaligned
hello, got the same problem. your fix worked. but found the real root cause for this. there is a small switch under the cd tray. if this is not pressed correctly, the tray goes back in. on my side, the small white cable that is connected to this switch was not connected to motherboard anymore. put the plug out and in, and it worked again.
Thank you. This fixed my issue. The disk drive would struggle to open fully when standing upright and close on it's own before fully ejecting tray. I replaced the lens/laser (stopped reading dvd video media) and had this issue after putting back together. I torqued both screws tight during reassembly. Loosening both screws evenly until the tray opened all the way while upright took trial and error.
I loosened the screws and it did nothing. I tightened them and it did nothing. I took it apart and cleaned everything and didn’t see anything out of place or broken and it still pulls the tray back in on its own.
Also a dead mobo battery will cause same issue if you press eject on power up instead of the power button - but the tray rapidly open and then slam shut and could probably chop your fingers off in the process! 😅😡
I'm going to have to try it out, my PS2 disc tray have been doing this and I don't want to risk damaging my Dark Cloud 1 & 2 seeing how hard getting those physical discs are to get nowadays

So far one game was trapped before it could fully close and I had to manually pull the disc out and it caused a couple of light scratches. How loose should I loosen the screws? I'm assuming I tightened them until they didn't tighten anymore the last time I took it apart to clean it.
Mine didn't have the logo and I had a broken Japanese one so I trimmed the top of the drive to fit the Japanese disc tray and now it's fine but closes to fast. i think it's because its not the same. Anyways I don't really care.

I weirdly fixed this by tilting it on its side and opening/closing the tray constantly. Maybe a switch in the disc unit needs some contact cleaner?
Its insane to me that no matter the year issues like these will be fixed by the smallest of solutions

MeanMrMustard1 Just do a half turn and try the disc again. Keep going until it's resolved.

Wish I knew this when I first got it. Now it wont even open in the first place.
What i do is when it extends to the furthest point it does, spam eject and it’ll catch on
I just turn off power while holding it
