    Make your own farmhouse linen curtains for WAY less!
    Our recent blog post tackles many of the obstacles that come with using drop cloth for DIY curtains:
    1. Where can I find a large seamless drop cloth?
    2. How do I know if the drop cloth is bleachable and of good quality?
    3. How do I bleach drop cloth if I live on a septic system and can't use a washing machine?
    4. How do I get rid of the terrible bleach smell after I'm done bleaching my fabric?
    5. I have no sewing skills, how can I hang my drop cloth and make it look beautiful?

    CAUTION: This project involves the use of large amounts of bleach water in a large vessel. Be sure to choose a well-ventilated safe environment when using chemicals like bleach. Always wear safety equipment such as glasses, masks, and gloves. Supervise any small children or animals that could potentially go near this project. Also note, that we are on a septic system and we could not use our washing machine as a vessel for the bleaching process. Use caution when draining your bleach water to ensure there is no harm to any person's animals or property. Consider neutralizing your bleach water if needed and check with any manufacturer to ensure this is done safely!

    You can use a wheelie bin as a container, you just need to clean it.

    A good draper will allow costly fabric to hang awhile prior to hemming to avoid the length from altering over time. For a speedier method that will also help to to remove wrinkles....Pin up a temporary hem that clears the floor by several inches. Close one panel so the fabric is extended to it entire width. Insert a rod into that bottom hem. Gravity is evenly distributed across the rod and will gently pull out the wrinkles and slightly stretch the fabric on the vertical. You could use a 2x2 or 2x4 instead of the rod if your curtain rod and hardware are sturdy. The wood will increase the weight and therefore the pull on the wrinkles. If the cloth is slightly damp or you can steam it as it hangs, so much the better. The moisture will help relax the fabric into shape. Make certain whatever you use for a rod cannot not discolor the fabric. To finish up, leave the curtains hanging and remove the temporary hem. Drag your ironing board to the window and steam press just the bottom section of the curtain panels. If you have a portable sewing machine, consider stitching the permanent hem with the curtains hanging in place. You could hang the curtains backwards temporarily so it is easier fold the hem. It can be less work to move your tools about than to wrestle with yards and yards of clean white cloth.

    What drapery clips do you have in this video? They are thick and exactly what I’m looking for. Your amazon link directed me to some thinner ones. Thanks

      The clips in this video are Allen and Roth brand. I couldn’t find them in the dark bronze color for sale anywhere so I linked to a similar style on Amazon. We found the Allen and Roth clips at Home Dept. If you keep checking their store, it might become available again.

      As another alternative you could research muslin. I always bleach my dropcloths in a laundromat, they usually have larger machines.

      Barbara Hogan I used bleach to lighten the color of the drop cloth. This also softens them a little bit. This is completely optional. If you like the original color of the dropcloth there’s no need to bleach it at all. All you have to do is launder them like you normally would. Hope this helps! 💃🏻

    Why bleach

    • @thebluebonnethomestead9130
      @thebluebonnethomestead9130  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bleach is totally optional. If you want to lighten the color of your fabric use bleach. But if you like the natural linen color of the drop cloth, you can just skip the bleach altogether. ;)
