Essential Principles For Treating Depression

  • Many practitioners feel ill-equipped to help treat a depressed person. More and more depressed people are consuming antidepressants, yet depression rates are soaring. Why is this?
    I share some paradoxical facts about depression based on research, and discuss these in the context of how we treat depression. I'll also describe what depression is, and the cycle of depression, and I'll share 3 vital steps to follow when treating depression.

    I appreciate this discussion. I am working with a client who is depressed and totally unmotivated to do anything to change things.

    I’m living with someone who is depressed and suicidal. I found this video very helpful in forming a supportive environment for him. I’ll give what you said and recommended extensive thought and not miss the vital first step in my quest to involve him in things that I perceive are good for his mental health. We can’t build anything without foundations and expect it to last. Waking up with obsessive thoughts needs to be understood first. I think you’ve allowed me to do this by starting with the first step and realising how exhausting it is. Grateful thanks.

    Very enlightening. My GAD and MDD were so extreme my cortisol levels were critically and chronically low. My endo checked for Addison's several times over a few years. Negative each time.
    Finally sent me to the Cleveland Clinic in the US (where I'm from). The chair of endocrinology did two days of testing. Nothing wrong physically (except low cortisol, even there). After talking with him about my medical history, he said it was due to chronic stress, anxiety, etc. He stated he'd only seen this twice in his practice (he retired last year) and that it was psychological.
    That was over two years ago. I am, with help from therapists, psychiatrists, and channels like this one, slowly rewiring my anxious brain. It has been slow but I'm heading in the right direction.

    I wanted to thank you for this video in particular. I've noticed western society has been pushing the idea of "You've been born with depression, you'll always have it, take some pills and try to look on the bright side!" attitude. I have dated multiple women in the past year who were very depressed and hopelessly depressed. No matter what I said, I couldn't convince them that their therapist might be wrong that they'd never get out of it. Therapists can be helpful, or keep people in an endless cycle of victimhood. A scary thought for weak minded people who are easily influenced.

    What helped me a lot is going on a diet and losing 20 kilo by eating healthy and riding my bike a lot. Now don’t think it was all sunshine doing it. It was worse than feeling depressed, but the upside for me was that I inflicted this ‘pain’ myself while also benefiting from it. It also was measurable result. And yes, it’s true you get more energy and feel more stable, even though when being on a diet I didn’t notice it. It’s more when you look back a couple of years later you notice it.

And when you feel like you can’t stand being on a diet no more, and want to quit, just hang in there without gaining or losing weight and after a while you notice you can go further. For me it felt like dying a bit every day. Oddly enough when you get used to the craving feeling it’s kinda nice too. Good Luck!

      @@rabarberellum1017 Thanks! Yeah it's tough because food has always been a safety net for me when feeling down. I no longer have that so I'm trying to find new ways to cope.

      @@jayros4269 what helped me a lot in the tough moments during the day was focusing on breathing out, not in. And doing it a bit more exaggerated. I don’t know if this works with everybody. I just found out it worked for me. Always do what works for you. For me it ment, a very healthy diet but still eating two slices with normal old cheese, no 20+ or something, which really made my day. Furthermore, I didn’t eat healthy out of the blue. During a year I traded bad food for healthy food. I can assure you that it wasn’t easy, you have to grow into it. Don’t do everything at once. 2 years ago I was convinced my brain needed the fat in chips etc. It turned out I was wrong but that really took a long time for my body adjusting. That’s maybe the best advice I can give you: take your time for it, let your mind and body adjust to the changes, don’t try and hit a home run but small steps at the time and try to figure out what works best for you in reaching your goal for eating healthy and losing some weight. Good luck on your journey! O, and a big plus is that when you start to get a bit of succes people will start to notice it, which is a nice compliment. 👋👍🙏

    in the hell of depression this man gives great hope and is a hero for sharing this, the drug ads should be outlawed like they did with cigarette ads, prozac has a flourine atom attached to it fyi totally toxic to the body

    The debate on depression and anxiety disorders is what i am interested in. There is inevitably a chemical distruption that cannot be denied by any psychotherapist. Does this disruption come before or after the psychological thoughts, behaviours etc? These neurotransmitters, hormones can make people think and behave in certain ways, which is why i find it hard to completely eliminate the biological theory.

    I went into extreme depression, when i was convinced by co-workers to retire with them. I realized late, retirement wasn't for me,.. I stressed for weeks!, day and night over hoping i could STOP it!, but wasn't able. Everyday!, i suffer. I just want to go back!... but unable to return to my position. I have no interest in life! I said NO interest. I hate myself for doing what I did to myself!.. I've had multiple panic attacks, been hospitalized,.. and have tried to coming suicide. How.... without my job, and that life i had.... can i so called " move on, let go".?..!!! Im so deprest , i don't have any joy, or wants, or desire to even go outside, to check mail, to even watch tv. Nothing.... my ruminating on my mistake is 24/7,... and im unable to stop it. Anything can help?..🙏

    Just saw my psychiatrist again today for my depression and anxiety, which has become much worse, and all he ever does is criticise me, make me feel worse, and prescribes antidepressants and sleeping tablets. 😐

      .... im with you. Depression is difficult for even a Psychiatrist to understand., as they're not experiencing, and are not you.... and only you, who is affected by the depression knows how hurtful it is... and , what has caused this depression, is personal to you... they'll never understand.. 🙏 I hope to get past mine... suffering every day is horrible.

    Thank you for reinforcing stigma about psychiatric medications. Anti depressants can save lives. You should be ashamed of yourself for making this video. It will likely harm multiple people. You are unethical
