Frank had more character in his voice at this time. The prettier voice was great but it's great traveling through time with him and digesting those earthier tones . Just great !

True but "wear & tear" were among the interpretive tools in his kit. The little which surfaces here I think was intentional.

Sinatra nails it. I've been listening to all the versions on you tube and this one is it, what the song is about. What a story teller. Compare it with his 1950's Columbia version (also on youtube) and the difference and dramatic growth is incredible.

      Hi Russell,
Yes, this song is so, so touching and so beautiful. Sinatra does it beautifully. I first heard it on a mid-'50's Tony Bennett album, "TONY". You've probably heard/seen it here on youtube. I've heard Frank Sinatra sing this and he does it so well. (LOVE Sinatra best, but I think this is the one song Tony Bennett does better than anyone...maybe! ☺

This performance was part of a television special from 1968, Francis Albert Sinatra Does His Thing, when he was 53. The arrangement is by Nelson Riddle from the album,"The Concert Sinatra" released in 1963. Vocally, he is still in excellent form, still sustaining notes, the deterioration was evident in the early to mid 70's. His best vocals were in the first two "Man And His Music" specials.

Interesting fact: The great record producer Bones Howe got the idea for the intro to The 5th Dimension's "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" from the intro to THIS lovely Sinatra song. Bones heard the Sinatra tune during an elevator ride at a casino and immediately was captivated and felt that something similar would make for a great intro to Aquarius....low-and-behold he sure turned out to be right, it fit perfectly!

This was broadcast 50 years ago this month, as a part of "Francis Albert Sinatra Does His Thing". For a laugh, search for "Sinatra Sweet Blindness", taped for this same television special. You'll see how the special covered all the ground, from the sublime to the ridiculous. The show ran at 9pm on a Monday night (Nov. 25, 1968) on the NBC network. One can't imagine a contemporary television audience sitting still for 5 minutes of this music today. Maybe a brave host like Stephen Colbert would put something like this one (though the orchestra would be prohibitively expensive), but in a primetime slot? Never.

What are people complaining about? This is a lovely performance. Of course we all wish singers maintained their youthful voices forever, but that's impossible, especially if you drink and smoke a lot -- which Sinatra did. And party, and stay out late, etc. He was a real musician, a performer, a presence. He doesn't have to do a lot to get the point across. Rather, he knew that you have to do very little or you won't get your point across. The idea that he didn't have actual technical knowledge as a singer is ridiculous. He didn't just step up to the mike every night and hope for the best. You cannot spin a phrase out the way he did without good breath control and an understanding of musical line. I read a story once that he worked with Mabel Mercer (?) and credited her with teaching him how to sneak a breath through the side of his mouth while he was singing. One little google and I find this gem-- a book about singing written by Frank Sinatra and his voice teacher. www.jazzsingers.com/TipsOnPopularSinging/cover.html So in response to the man who talked about Sinatra not using diaphragmatic breath: www.jazzsingers.com/TipsOnPopularSinging/breathing.html. Sinatra knew what he was doing.

      Sopranosed,
You can take it to the bank: he knew exactly what he was doing. And as with most vocalists, his maturity only enhanced this, and later performances! I love this!! A magnificent song, a gorgeous arrangement and Frank's interpretation, who could ask for anything more!!

I agree; and what's more, I've heard Sinatra's version from the '40's when his voice was at it's absolute freshness and elasticity. And STILL, this version easily wins the day between the two. It's just way deeper, and more REAL. I've yet to hear a rendition that even touches this one.

Superb presentation. Beautiful orchestration. And, of course, Frank. He didn't sing Frank the crooner, he just simply sang the song. Perfectly. Hit the one high note (although the orchestra played heavy notes almost over it, just in case).

Before Lord God made the sea or the land
He held all the stars in the palm of his hand
And they ran through his fingers like grains of sand
And one little star fell alone
Then the Lord God hunted through the wide night air
For the little dark star in the wind down there
And he stated and promised he'd take special care
So it wouldn't get lost no more
Now, a man don't mind if the stars get dim
And the clouds blow over and darken him
So long as the Lord God's watching over him
Keeping track how it all goes on
But I've been walking through the night and the day
Till my eyes get weary and my head turns gray
And sometimes it seems maybe God's gone away
Forgetting his promise and the word he'd say
And we're lost out here in the stars
Little stars big stars blowing through the night
And we're lost out here in the stars
Little stars big stars blowing through the night
And we're lost out here in the stars

Interesting story how 5th Dimension got their intro to Aquarius
    tapeop.com/interviews/64/bones-howe/
"...we were in Vegas and we were finishing the Stoned Soul Picnic record. They were performing with Frank Sinatra. I'm getting in the elevator at Caesar's Palace, where they were performing, and in those days if the artist was a headliner in the showroom they put his records on and they played through the casino everywhere. I get into the elevator one night after doing vocals in the studio and I hear this swirling music in the elevator and I thought, "What is that? That could be the intro to 'Aquarius'!" It keeps swirling and swirling and finally Frank sings, "We're lost out here in the stars. Big stars. Little stars. [from "Lost in the Stars"]" I thought, "That's The Concert Sinatra record." I ran upstairs and I called [horn and string arranger] Bill Holman on the phone and I said, "I got the intro to 'Aquarius....' "

Who is the arranging genius? Arrangers are so often uncredited. It sounds less like Richard Strauss than Wagner in his Tristan mode. Probably Nelson Riddle or maybe Claus Ogerman.

    • @stevesilverman5296
      @stevesilverman5296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nelson Riddle gets the credit for this one and Frank made a habit of crediting the composers and his arrangers in live performance. He knew it was a group effort but the sound you hear appeared in his head first. Then it was just a matter of conveying that to the supporting cast, in non musical terms, often sighting examples from either classical or operatic recordings - music which was often unfamiliar to his arrangers. They benefited from the experience, that is, once they got past the fact that the call citing the example sometimes came at 3 am from some distant corner of the globe.
