To me those queues on mount Everest tells more about the intrinsic shallowness of the human being than about mountenaireering. I'm sure that there are lots of 7000 meters summits around that are more challenging to climb than Everest given the huge infrastructure and logistics put in place to facilitate its ascension. Now stating in a dinner that you climbed the 7126m Himlung Himal Peak carries a lot less bragging rights. That those people queuing like idiots at 8000+ on Everest carried up by their often over inflated ego do die from time to time seems an obvious good choice for darwinism driven selection.

@@thwales2520 Is it? Maybe. But doesn't that sound a little like the ends justify the means? Excellence for the sake of the overall good is of course a wonderful thing. And money can be a powerful motivator. So no one can say that a person who invents, say, a vaccine to cure polio is somehow less worthy if he/she did so in the pursuit of riches than one who did so for purely altruistic reasons. No, what I mean is what humans do once they HAVE that wealth. That insatiable drive that makes humans with means feel that the law no longer applies to them, or that they should be given special treatment, or that their voice in government should be more important based on nothing but the number of commas in their bank balance. It's not the pursuit of money that I find so distasteful in humans, it's how they act once they have it.

I'm guessing that 99% of the people that climb Everest, wouldn't climb it if they weren't allowed to let anyone know they climbed it. The day I decided on a whim after watching a documentary, the queue started at the bus stop in Stansted. The guy in front hadn't moved for hours, had crampons on back to front, suncream spilling out his rucksack. If I hang on here any longer I'll run out of oxygen and jelly babies. Told my mates I'd done the Everest thing when I got home and put the kettle on to watch Wallace in A Close Shave.

Oh, no. You’re going where only the bravest dare to tre... oh, there’s a line. And we could die. And we may have to turn back without making it to the top. And we saw a guy in green boots who never made it to EPCOT.

Kind of like a load of Range Rovers in the golf club car park over two spaces and all the owners moaning there’s no room.

But the thing is everest is a death trap, and inexperienced climbers make it even more dangerous or just outright cause deaths.

Didn’t know we consider people who summit the tallest mountain in the world 5 times as inexperienced but whatever….even the most experienced climbers in the world take at least one Sherpa with them it’s the nature of climbing, they are there to provide a needed service, yes they should be paid more but take that up with the Nepalese Government not the people who do these expeditions and pay wages. You can’t simply tip them more money as people are told not to bring money to the mountain, your expedition leaders also have a rule with the Nepalese Government in which their under strict agreement not to pay the Sherpas any more money as to not upset the status quo, do you think other Sherpas would continue to work for the same wage if others were getting cash in hand tips? No of course they wouldn’t, no one in their right mind would, so again talk to the government if you want to see change happen and stop taking your feelings out on people who simply want to climb.

In order to claim I had pioneered a new route I stepped off the well beaten path a meter or more to the south and named my route the South Route. People die from their decision to climb Everest (with a heap of other people). Everything we do has a risk. The queue is just a contributing side-effect, not the cause of death and injury.
My son died last year falling from a local rockface. He wanted the challenge, was desperate to get out after Covid lockdown, was aware of the risk and very sadly, it didn't pay off. He made the decision to climb that day, but I take full responsibility for not loooking into that climb more closely and then stopping him from going on his own. He was only 19 and I didn't protect him.
I understand the desire to do a risky, challenging activity, such as Everest. I guess there are many reasons and values behind it - sense of accomplishment, ego, status, achievement of a lifelong ambition.... However, adults make their own decisions and are fully responsible for them (unless they're being held at gunpoint). Blaming queues or weather or avalanches or poor management or ill health or being on the "wrong team" as I think the guy in the video suggested, are just excuses. We simply need to accept that some of our choices are exceedingly risky.

That's so devastating, I'm so sorry. It might have just been his time. Who knows, if you had stopped him it could have caused him to drive off in anger and get in an accident, and then you might have blamed yourself for his death or be haunted by the last time you spoke being a fight. In reality, he was able to die doing something he loved, and was allowed to go on his own terms because his mom trusted him enough to make his own decisions. I hope you're doing well and draw strength from the fact that you were a good mom and loved him better than anyone else could, every day of his life. In 30 years there will be a resort at the summit. Most people will fly in and land in a high altitude, vertical take-off shuttle. Slightly off to the side will be a small, barren outcrop, - full of flags and discarded energy bar wrappers - where climbers are permitted to go. However Climbers won’t be allowed at the actual summit, unless they book a suite or get a day pass. But even then standing on the summit will be limited to a few minutes unless you have a ‘Gold Pass’ from the resort.

My suggestion: Check every climber if they have been on any other 5000+m peak. UIAA or any given organization that operates in country where the peaks are should acknowledge and verify that climber has summited 5000+m peak. Given that Everest is most popular and most wanted peak to summit, this way you'd actually know that you're dealing with experienced climber. That should be checked before giving any permit to climb Everest from either side. This would be beneficial to both groups because there would be less queues and for an individual because based on his earlier experience he'd be more prepared for hell of Everest and not some rookie adventure hunter.

    • @frankzhandamo

The fact that you even make this stupid suggestion means you have never climbed a 8000m mountain before or not even a 5000m one. If one cannot finish a 5000m mountain without oxygen, he/she would collapse well before the final ascend onto Everest peak. Therefore this individual would not even get to queue.
