    I am not sure what is more challenging for the sherpas:
    A)climbing Everest or
    B)having to constantly save the lives of dumb, rich tourists (who are inexperienced mountaineers) that put everyones lives at risk.

    Even as a child, I always thought it was weird that adventurers get the worldwide fame and praise for being guided up to the summit of the Everest once by a team of Sherpas, who not only summit the Everest on the regular but are also in charge of keeping them safe and alive, hauling all their stuff, and laying down the ropes AHEAD of them so they can arrive later and do their “omg I’ve done it” moment.
    I’ve always considered the Sherpa people as the only heroes of Everest, and they deserve so much more respect. The adventurers are there only by their grace.

      @RJCasablancas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Agree, but not the only ones. There are some people who go up there by themselves, some other experienced people who are not necessarily sherpas, all my respect for them.

    • @zagrizena
      @zagrizena 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Was thinking something like that the other day, but after watching a documentary on Everest expeditions and the work of Sherpas I realised, there is basically no other option on Everest. There is so many people and so many expeditions and people vary so much in high altitude climbing experience that having a well established system with setting up the ropes and camps in advance etc is the only way to limit the loss of life up there. And even after that, sometimes tragedies occur due to sheer numbers.
      I have no delusions about my ability to climb Everest, but even if I had the endurance, the climbing experience and the strength, I wouldn't go past base camp because I know I will never have enough high altitude experience even hypothetically, to go up safely and I'm not keen on putting others at risk for my shot at adventure. If I want an adventure it's up to me, but I'm not putting others in danger.

      Although Sherpas rock's, this was not the case with the Everest's first climb (and most other himalayans mountains). The guides really helped and were absolutely fundamental for the climb (on everest, the first climb was a pair of a new zealand and a nepalese - a sherpa, but not simply a guide).
      That being said, it's injust both to fail to recognize nepalese guides as the real heros, but also to call hero someone that climbs a mountain just by follow ropes and oxygens caches set by others.

It's not about how much experience they have, but rather how much money they have! A tiny bit of research would have told you that. And this needs to stop before another 285 bodies are left on Everest as colorful guideposts. And you don't think this is in the Khumbu Glacier between EBC and 1st Camp? Where DO you think this is?

      This is how they earn their living..rich foreigners pay good money for sherpas to drag them up the mountain..some of these foreigners have little or no alpine experience ..A couple of the rescuers are foreign guides by the sounds of them and one is English by the sounds of his swearing. ..Again the foreign guides are professional mountaineers who are paid by the climbing tourists to guide them on the mountain..part of that process is what you see here ..if everyone who attempted Everest was a highly skilled and experienced alpinist then most of the Nepalese sherpas and foreign guides who you see working so hard to stop this lady from falling into the crevace and then recover her to safety wouldn't have jobs....That being said she's really frightened and looks clumsy and I'd be quite surprised if she's actually experienced with a set of crampons ..maybe some sort of course with qualifications (similar to that required for scuba diving)would help matters somewhat...

They help children to have a good education so that they wont take the risk of going to the Everest and bring the foods, oxygen and etc. to the "adventurers". To those who have a good heart please do help them. Cash or other school supplies. As for last yr they were shakened because of earthquake and the schools were damaged so they hve to rebuild it again. Let us help. Thank you and happy new year!😘💓

      I agree. Sadly, and surprisingly, there isn't a governing body of any kind to regulate it. Clearly, some companies do their best to control who they let climb.
      But individuals, and individual expedition companies, can take anyone's money, and there is no control mechanism in place.
      The government of Nepal hands out climbing permits to anyone who pays for it.
