Great video and information. Completely agree on the Geo Tapajos and Balzani’s. I’ve had anubias/java fern glued to driftwood for a while now and they leave them alone 👌🏻
I’ve had great luck with electric blue acara, rainbow cichlids, dwarf flag cichlids and keyhole cichlids, I have them in heavily planted tanks and never had an issue. Even my geophagus tapajo doesn’t really bother my plants, I just put a few large pebbles around the base when planting.
Thanks Jason! You have really opened my eyes on how cool cichlids can be! I always thought they were all big aggressive fish and wasn’t interested in that at all. But you have really helped me learn to appreciate some of the smaller, calmer cichlids in your tanks. My next tank will definitely be a cichlids tank. And I didn’t realize that our naturally hard water is something they would thrive in! Right now I lug 5 gallon RO water bottles from the store every week for water changes. The thought of using tap water (treated for chloramine) for a tank, and having that be perfect for cichlids is a game changing idea for me! And now with some options for planted tanks, I’m even more sold! Thanks for all of the great education you are doing on these neat fish! Barb
This video was made after my heart! :) I love my cichlids and my plants, but they tend to not work well together! My rams and Apistos are okay. My Sajicas are diggers too 😪
Hey! Would you be able to keep Julidochromis ornatus and Neolamprologus leleupi togheter in like a 29 or 39 gallon tank? Or would it be better to keep Julidochromis ornatus with Neolamprologus multifasciatus/ similis. If im planing on setting up a tank like this would you recommend some cleaning crew and if so what? :) Love your videos
As long as you don’t care about them breeding you could mix the rock dwellers - the shell dwellers might be tough with them because they tend to push other fish away with fry in their shells. I always use bristlenose plecos in my lake Tanganyika tanks and never had an issue as long as they have rock work to hide in.
I am so interested in keeping a cichlid tank. But, I only would want to keep them in a 35 gallon tank. May I ask, if there is a cichlid, that you would highly recommend that I can keep in a 35 gallon up until the moment those fish die of old age? I would want it to be planted too. I will plant, Dwarf sagittaria, brown and green Cryptocoryne , and Cryptocoryne wrinkled. Do you think, it is plausible to keep a cichlid specie tank in a 35 gallon with deep substrate and these plants (I mentioned above)?
Would a 30 gallon tank be too small to plant up and keep a pair of apistogramma cacatuoides triple red, a pair of german blue ram, one pair of fairy cichlid, one angel pair, one checker board cichlid, one pair of the ones in this video that are black and white and look like little snakeheads (what are they called?), cories, and some snails and shrimps? Would they all have similar water requirements and get along together? If not, which of those would you put in a 30 that would be a good balance of color and activity?
I would probably just go with one pair of cichlids. Anymore than that runs the risk of aggression. I usually only put angels in a 40 breeder or larger.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have a 125 I'm redoing. Wanting some somewhat smaller fish in it. Maybe a plant here n there. Bout how many of each do you think would be ok in a 125???
Hey Jason! Great video. What do you think about a planted tank with a couple electric blue acaras? I´ve hadn´t had any problems with a pair... they even layed eggs on a java fern leaf. I have there some jungle val, higrophylas, nimphoides and some sp taiwan. Luckily, they don´t dig much.... but maybe I had some luck with this pair. Great hug from Argentina!!!
I would definitely stay on the larger side with the tank. They get big and can be aggressive. You would probably be best off with large fish like rainbow fish. At some point he may need a larger tank like a 75 gallon or more.
Could I put juli or those lemon cichlids in a 60 gallon tank with dense jungle Val and with buenos ares tetras, a synodontis petricola, mollies, flag fish, and a bristle nose pleco?
Possibly - they may go after the other fish if they are protecting fry, but if the mollies and flag fish hang out more mid-water they probably won't be bothered as much.
