$700 isn't even really the problem $700 without a stand or drive is the problem. Sony is thinking they're Apple right now but they haven't hit that point.
Not including the stand is messed up, not including the drive is obviously just them trying to normalize digital sales. Digital sales cost much less to produce and they can't be resold to a potential customer.

I mean, people are signing up for them… there are plenty of cars that are cheaper. If you have to have a $700 a month payment you are buying a car you can’t afford…
IDK what those metrics come from. I have a GR86, most cars are like 15-25 grand. I make slightly more money than the average person, and a 700/mo payment seems insane to me. The average car payment is probably that high because rich people have lots of expensive cars or something, but most normal people pay significantly less than that for a car. It sort of felt like an out-of-touch sort of comment to me. >_>
Note that in Europe, prices are given with the VAT included. The US have equivalent taxes but as they vary from State to State, they got used to announce the price before the taxes. @@TheOutsideFox People have this tendency to think of inflation as some sort of "static" pricing thing. Inflation coming down doesn't mean prices come down. Inflation is a "rate," more specifically the rate at which goods and services increase in cost annually due to the devaluation of the currency being used. Just because inflation today may be lower than it was previously, it doesn't wipe out the prior increase. It just means the product is not going up in cost as fast as it previously was. Inflation is a one way road. Things only get more expensive. Its why inflation is the #1 country killer. Destroy the currency too fast, and the lower and middle class get destroyed as well.

The PS3 when it came out was a massive improvement over the PS2, as well as having a bluray drive at the time. The PS5 Pro doesn't even come with a disk drive, there is no way people will justify this price.
You're absolutely right ! Linus' review of the presentation seems superficial and takes out of context many important factors like pricing in different regions, lack of necessary hardware (blu-ray disc drive) , overpriced compared to the base PS5.
the ps3 having blu ray was massive as at the time a blu ray player was around the same cost. the ps3 was very expensive at launch but was worth the price too. i dont feel the same value ln this pro price
I remember arguing with myself that it's worth because of the blueray player back than because it was quite decent and saved me upwards of 350 bucks for a decent player
This *IS* the most expensive console The PS3 came with a disc-drive, built in, that could not only play PS3 games, but also play movies (ESPECIALLY BLU-RAY, which at the time was obscenely expensive to just have a blu-ray player), and other forms of disc-based content. It had compatibility with other consoles like the PSP, it could also play almost any sort of media file, aswell as hold pictures. It also had multiple USB ports and an excellent selection of games that made the cost justifiable, It also came with PS2 backwards compatibility when it was launched. It justified it's price by having a good game selection, but also being the console of "everything". People, Justifiably, complained about it's price too, and I remember that I only got mine when the price had dropped to about 500 due to a sale. Compare this to the PS5 Pro, which does not have a strong game selection, almost 4 years into the generation's lifespan, does not come with a disc drive by default, has an expensive selection of accessories that you might end up needing like the stand (because it cannot stand well enough on it's own), It has poor airflow, and i'm not even sure you can play anything that isn't a game on them. It cannot justify this price. Keep in mind that the Disc Drive and the Stand would put you back another 200 USD at the least. Adjusted for inflation, sure, that makes sense on paper, but our wages and the money we have available has *NOT* adjusted with inflation, and the cost of living has soared way up because of companies doing what Sony is doing, reading the market, and adjusting their prices & services without adjusting their wages to match. This is industry-wide across almost every industry on earth not backed by an aggressive union. Many people just can't afford to just drop the equivalent of a car payment on a console that just is not worth it. It's even more egregiously priced in the UK, where we have to spend a whole 200 USD more because they couldn't be bothered to actually price the thing properly for the UK market, let alone the EU market. This pricing is just another example of a multi-billion dollar company being so out of touch for what living is like for the vast majority of people that they think an obscene price-tag like this is even remotely justifiable. I'm sorry, but there is nothing that you can tell me that would make this seem like a justifyable purchase when I built my PC for £700 when I first got it and could run most games from before 2022 just fine. It's just cheaper to build a PC, then upgrade it later when you have the money, than it is to buy a PS5 Pro, the Stand, the Disc Drive, an extra controller or 2, and that's all before the games which all cost $60-70 nowadays. I'm sorry I'm not rich enough to find this acceptable.
Agreed, except for the out of touch. I may be wrong but I'd wager Sony, like many, lobby hard to ensure that wages don't go up and don't match the previous value that money held. There's likely some calculations based on people being working poor where they can spend 700 (feels better than saving) and it'll hurt their vacation, lifestyle, retirement, etc but the short term pleasure and fomo win out. Nothing against anyone trying to live. Everything against powerful entities striving to make comfort in (relative) financial security a pipe dream for many.
On top of your good argument, I think the key thing that Linus is forgetting is that the reaction to the "most expensive" PlayStation at the time of launch was probably bigger than what's happening here. Does he not remember the Kaz Hirai "FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS" meme? RIIIIDGE RACER?!?! You're also didn't mention that at the time, the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. So if you wanted a Blu-Ray player, it wasn't overpriced, it was actually a good deal. Today, disc players are dirt cheap and Sony couldn't be bothered to include one in their 'Pro' unit.
PS5 = $500 1 TB -> 2 TB = $60 RX 5700 -> RX 7700XT = $150 PS5 -> PS5 Pro = $200 Makes sense based on the numbers. 1) If you were building a PC and had $700 to spend on a GPU, would you buy one that's only $500 or spend the full $700? 2) If you didn't already have a PS5, but wanted to get one, would you pay $200 for more graphical fidelity and double storage? 3) If you already have a PS5, why are you complaining about how expensive a more powerful PS5 is, that you aren't going to buy? 4) I've seen people buy 4090s for their $4000 PC builds and the only game they play is Fortnite. Explain "good game selection."
Bad take. 1. PS3 had a Blu-ray drive, at the time that ALONE made up for over 60% of the price. Sony also didn't charge for PSN. 2. The spec jump isn't delivering 1:1 in performance and value, can't rationalize the cost using better parts. 3. No new games released to 'make use' of 'all that 'increased performance'.
This. People don't remember how expensive standalone blu-ray players were back then. Not to mention it was backwards compatible and was a massive jump in performance compared to the PS2.
and backwards compatible all they way back to my PS1 disks! Sony has taken away more and more over the years just to resell it to you down the line hiding behind technical excuses!

I don't like the inflation argument - costs of living increasing is not a justification for Sony getting greedy. If the average disposable income increased by 10%, then we can spend 10% more on our hobbies but when the disposable income increases by 2% while costs of living increase by 10%, people will see their hobbies as luxury and spend less in turn. If Sony outright is aiming "for the whales" and enthusiasts who are willing to pay that much for a console "that targets 60 fps in fidelity mode", they should first and foremost have updated the CPU to actually achieve what they already promised the PS5 would do.
The fact we had to still choose between FPS and resolution on the PS5 after the PS4 Pro is whats so dumb to me and only to finally get that on the PS5 Pro down the line and only to be price gouged for it with no disk drive is insane.

The problem is that wages haven't kept up with inflation in most cases. Sure, the PS3 was a similar price when adjusted for inflation, but everyone was complaining about it back then - and most are technically earning less than that now!
Here's the thing, that's not Sony's problem. That's the global economy's problem and they are playing the same game as everyone else. The amount of inflation between 2020 and 2024 shaved 15% of the tangible dollar value off of the $500 base PS5. It is extremely hard to overstate how impactful covid was on the global economy in terms of inflation.
Wage have been kept up with consumer products. Its houses that wages have not caught up. As houses sell for an average $350,000.00 usd, your average person cannot afford a home in today's economy now. $700 usd for a ps5 pro is still relatively cheap comparing to building an entry level PC.

Ehh, it was also a pretty decent ecosystem back then and digital games were barely a thing at the start; everything previously had been disks. They aren't doing that here because they literally can't, like Linus said they are basically giving you the exact price you'd pay for the upgrades if you bought them yourself. I appreciate your reply but find it humorous you need to speak down to people when you are actually the one in the wrong.
The biggest factor is diminishing returns. An extra $300 (because we should be comparing to the $400 model since it's discless), even if appropriately priced based on the cost of modern tech, doesn't give the performance and fidelity most consumers are willing to pay an extra $300 for. For the vast majority of people (who don't fall prey to FOMO), they'd be better off with the base PS5 which gets 90% of the way there (aesthetically) for under 60% of the price. A large reason for the complaints here though is the insane ballooned scale gaming has even had anyway. PS5 games for the most part only look marginally better to the naked eye than PS4 games, save for resolution and framerate. Larger more seamless worlds is largely attributed to SSDs instead of graphics processing... it feels like if we scaled graphics back we'd still get 90% of the experience at significantly reduced hardware requirements and dev time and budgets. “I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I’m not kidding" applies here too, and I think a lot of people would happily choose getting more 60 fps PS4 games if it made gaming more affordable. I mean the biggest games out are Fortnite and the now 11 years old GTA Online. Tech prices aren't the only thing to have plateau'd.
@ThePrimordialArchon USD prices aren't tax included like in EUR, GBP, YEN. Taxes on products variats where you buy things. But you're right. The USD price tag is cheaper because VAT is nowhere higher in the US as almost every country in Europe.
Exactly!! How is it the amount is the same for the two currencies? - when the £ is stronger! Looking at how much the GBP is against the USD we’re paying around $915 - I’d rather save my money and invest in PC gaming even if I have to spend more - at least I can use my PC for more than just gaming
Stop saying the ps3 is the most expensive console adjusted for inflation. That console included a disc drive. At least make it an equitable comparison. This narrative continuing to be pushed is why consumers keep getting rail-roaded by corporate money-grubbing decisions like this.
@@bubmario also the price almost killed the console, did everyone forget that people didn't buy the PS3 at launch. The 360 smashed it in sales at the start of the generation.
The PS3 was a unique system that represented a huge improvement over the PS2. It had a bluray drive, free online gaming and a marvellous virtual world called "Home" that brought many new players to the console. PS5 has been a flop and it is doubtful many new players will be interested in the insanely priced Pro version. Sony need to listen to what customers want.
Do you know why you need to be shocked? Because in 2020 an Xbox Series X with 4K bluray player cost $500 and moves a lot of games in 1080 60fps even 120fps, or 4k 30fps and some 4K 60fps. You can get an Xbox Series X today for even cheaper than $500 and have a 4K bluray player and a similar performance to a PS5 Pro

When visiting (online) stores, prices are basically always shown including VAT across europe, excluding stores that are explicitly focussed on B2B sales
VAT, lol. Muricans don't include taxes in their sticker price, which is ridiculous (but also expected, because taxes vary by state). In Europe and most of the world - our prices include VAT. I'm shocked how many people are pointing this out as if they're completely new to buying things.
Is it possible they're seeing PC gamers for decades now regularly spending $2000+ on a PC and now console manufacturers think thats a reasonable price point for gaming, streaming, and whatever else consoles do now?

Thing is, that is only $2000 of upfront cost not taking into account the lower cost of incremental upgrades over a span of multiple years and the largest game library with steep sales on the regular. That $2000 was never a very regular thing. And all that said, PC players tend to be more enthusiast while console players tend to be more casual. @@victorkreig6089You might have to check that again as Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki told Financial Times. “Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning,” continuing “We’re lacking the early phase (of IP) and that’s an issue for us.” Totoki added that Sony, as a whole, has been better at finding new audiences for existing popular IPs, and thinks that the company won’t grow without creating content from scratch for higher returns. I think this is odd/shows a disconnect as I'd say they have just as much IP as their competitors if not more especially if they revived their old IP but as he's focusing on Original stuff then I guess they are lacking and perhaps it's a knee jerk reaction to the utter disgrace that was Concord but at least Sony are still in the space, Xbox are doing so Poor it's shameful.

I don't know why people are making such a big deal on the disk drive. It's not like if they added it 700$ would somehow magically be a good value all of a sudden. You can still purchase a desktop for that price with a lot more power, functionality and with the ability to upgrade in the future.
You can also get a Steam Deck for $400-600 and play PlayStation PC ports and thousands of other games too. Its not going to have the same graphical performance, but you'll get access to way more games, have free online multiplayer, and be able to bring it wherever you want. I'd rather have the larger library of games on PC imo.
The comparison chart you showed doesn't take into account the fact it doesn't have a drive, which all the other models shown do... So, if you add that in, it is actually the MOST expensive console they've ever done.
0:47 Come on bro, PS5 Pro doesn't come with a disc drive so technically speaking, it is the most expensive console Sony has released. Taking the average of their release prices, the PS5 Pro is almost $200 above.
Don't forget that the firmware license has been revocable to a bigger degree (loosing rights to run older firmware as soon as you're technically capable of updating) since the PS4, on the PS3 it was "only" after an update took place, so it's paying even more money for even less rights without at least having the benefit of bringing something actual new with it like doubling as a rather cheap in comparison blu-ray player like the PS3. Just so you know what I mean: PS3 EULA: "your rights to use or access the current version of the System Software will cease upon installation of a newer version of the System Software onto your PS3 system, whether such installation occurs through manual or automatic download by SCE through SCE's online network, or otherwise." PS4/5 EULA: "Your rights to use previous versions of System Software other than the current version of System Software terminates as soon as you can receive or have the most current version of System Software installed on your PS4 system." It's a mystery on its own as to why precisely the PS sells so much with everyone complaining about revocable licensing so much in general, but I just thought I may add that key difference here as it's even worse once one notices that you're forced to take on possible limiations coming with an update (if someone would want to use it fully legal for that matter).
@fabolousjada5070 Bro the PS3 had a BLU RAY PLAYER. In 2006, those costed $1000 by themselves! The Ps5 Pro doesn't even come with a disk drive. You can't even compare the value of the PS3 to the PS5 Pro, and it's not even close. Maybe actually educate yourself before speaking yknow.
2:45 As per Digital Foundry, the closest equivalent to the ps5 gpu is the RX 6700 10gb, doesn’t make that much of a difference, but it’s a little bit better than ltt is giving Sony credit for
The PS5 launched in 2020 during covid when prices were exploding, yet kept a low 500€ price. The PS5 pro doesn't have that shortage problem and doesn't even come with a disc drive or a stand. In Europe the price will be 950€ (800€ for the console, 120€ for the drive and 30€ for the stand). That's almost double the price. So no Linus, you're wrong. This price is bad, very bad.

There is no point in buying a console if the price of entry is the same, AND your games are more expensive, AND you have to pay extra to play online, AND you have a very limited game choice.

"Adjusting for inflation this isn't even Sony's most expensive console" OK, everyone needs to stop saying this like it's a meaningful statement in this situation: 1) The exorbitant launch price of the PS3 has been a meme hanging over Sony's head the past 18 years for a reason. 2) Adjusting for inflation is extremely reductive. If you adjust for wage increases relative to the cost of consumer goods (done with numbers I found on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' website), the launch PS3 would be about $728 today. Since the PS3 came with a disc drive, that makes the $780 for the PS5Pro + disc drive more expensive - and again the PS3 was meme'd into the ground for a reason. 3) This isn't happening in a vacuum: PS1: dropped to half price in under 2 years PS2: dropped to half price in under 4 years PS3: dropped to half price with twice the storage in under 3 years PS4: never dropped to half price PS5: raised its price in 4 years The PS3 got cheaper pretty damn quick. Current gen, Sony has taught us that the PS5Pro is probably cheaper at launch than it will be again. Are there reasons why hardware is expensive now beyond just pure greed on Sony's part? Absolutely. But using the launch pricing of the PS3 to make it look reasonable is not valid.
Consoles are the subscription services of gaming. PC gaming is SO much cheaper in the long run. Choosing your parts to upgrade, selling the old ones, better game discounts, and only needing to update based on your performance needs, rather than required generational gaps.
The main thing that is killing consoles is that the technology that powers them is no longer proprietary. They all run off of similar graphics processors now. Gone are the days of unique hardware powering these engines. The Brilliant Silicon Graphics design of N64, the Emotion Engine powered PS2. These all felt unique and special in their own way. Now everything feels the same and is a direct port from a PC based hardware. After 45 years of being anti PC Gaming ive given in and am a PC gamer. At least we still have the wonderful Nintendo Switch.

The reason the PS3 console was priced so high was because Blu Ray was new at the time. There were very few Blu Ray players on the market when the console originally launched, and I believe the PS3 was the cheapest one, and it offered gaming capabilities as well. So, the pricing was justified.

I don't think many people would be complaining about the price if for $700 it came with everything you need, like the vertical stand and the disk drive. This *IS* the most expensive console
The PS3 came with a disc-drive, built in, that could not only play PS3 games, but also play movies (ESPECIALLY BLU-RAY, which at the time was obscenely expensive to just have a blu-ray player), and other forms of disc-based content.
PS5 = $500
1 TB -> 2 TB = $60
RX 5700 -> RX 7700XT = $150
PS5 -> PS5 Pro = $200
Makes sense based on the numbers.
You forgot to convert the US dollar value before to today’s value, the PS3 was 600$ for the 60 GB model which equals 935$ in today’s price
TLDR
Bad take.

The PS5 PRO costs $780 when made equivalent to the PS3. Which would mean this is actually their most expensive console ever.
The PS3 came with a disc drive. The PS5 PRO requires you to spend $80 to get an equivalent experience as you did with a PS3 back when it came out.
The difference is they aren't eating any costs though
I know most of you people were kids when it came out or teens who didn't give two shakes, but sony ever since the ps2 has eaten at minimum $100 in each of their consoles, with the ps5 it was $300. Simply put they use the expectation of production getting cheaper the longer they produce them as the tech to do so gets better and therefore can make the same amount for less eventually breaking even and then turning a profit. They aren't doing that here because they literally can't, like Linus said they are basically giving you the exact price you'd pay for the upgrades if you bought them yourself. That's as LOW as they can go because any further and they aren't making any profit and are starting to eat production cost which isn't viable anymore because there isn't any wiggle room in the tech side anymore what you produce will still cost the same 3 years from now as we are stagnating.
@@victorkreig6089 You seem to have a complete misunderstanding of a subsidized console. They have a captive sales audience, which makes comparing this to a PC nonsensical.

Just so you know what I mean:
PS3 EULA: "your rights to use or access the current version of the System Software will cease upon installation of a newer version of the System Software onto your PS3 system, whether such installation occurs through manual or automatic download by SCE through SCE's online network, or otherwise."
PS4/5 EULA: "Your rights to use previous versions of System Software other than the current version of System Software terminates as soon as you can receive or have the most current version of System Software installed on your PS4 system."
It's a mystery on its own as to why precisely the PS sells so much with everyone complaining about revocable licensing so much in general, but I just thought I may add that key difference here as it's even worse once one notices that you're forced to take on possible limiations coming with an update (if someone would want to use it fully legal for that matter).
Its not the ps3 now would be 930$ now and it had trash exclusives but resistance when it came out.

OK, everyone needs to stop saying this like it's a meaningful statement in this situation:
1) The exorbitant launch price of the PS3 has been a meme hanging over Sony's head the past 18 years for a reason.
3) This isn't happening in a vacuum:
PS1: dropped to half price in under 2 years
PS2: dropped to half price in under 4 years
PS3: dropped to half price with twice the storage in under 3 years
PS4: never dropped to half price
PS5: raised its price in 4 years
The PS3 got cheaper pretty damn quick.

I don't think many people would be complaining about the price if for $700 it came with everything you need, like the vertical stand and the disk drive. And I'm expecting the $700 base version to not come with enough storage as well. Or even if it does come with a sufficient amount of storage, I expect the storage it has to quickly become insufficient in the next few years.
If you're going to jack the price up this much, at least sell me the entire package instead of parting it out into a bunch of nickel and diming crap.
That price includes the disk drive.
You mean $799 which is like almost 900 with taxes
