I am a teacher in Texas. About 3/4 of my students are recent immigrants from Guatemala....specifically from Toto.. Almost all of them speak K'iche albeit reluctantly. Amongst themselves I can hear them converse but when a hispanic from another country walks up they quickly change over to Spanish. I guess the perception perception is that it is backwards or "not cool". I always address my Guate kiddos in K'iche and encourage them to hold on to that link to their home country as the tendency is for teenagers to move towards the dominant culture. It's a beautiful language ...thanks for the video.

The Ladinos, or Spanish-speaking class, are the predominant governing class, and the have repressed the indigenous peoples for centuries. There is also a power dynamic that influences their actions with a lot of history.

I’m a Guatemalan-American and I can only speak English and Spanish but I wish I could speak K’iche my parents speak it almost all the time for most of my life but I don’t understand it or speak it but I wish I could. Sometimes I can tell what they are saying without actually knowing what it is they’re saying if that makes sense... probably not

I love to know that many people like to learn my language. I have work as an interpreter in Massachusetts, Rhode Island trial Court for at least 10 years.

I'm Guatemalan and I love the languages from that country and I feel so sad that many times people don't want these languages just because they are native and not foreign like Spanish is.

Beautiful, I would really love to see more of this kind of videos (for example: Keeping Quechua, Keeping Comanche, Keeping Nenets etc..), if possible, of course.

Lindsay, this video is beautifully done - the pacing, the openness, the editing - I'm so impressed with your style and mission! I have spent many years living and traveling around South America and visiting smaller indigenous communities to learn more about the culture, artisan traditions, and hear people's stories, and now I'm interested in heading to Mexico and Guatemala. This video shows so much respect for and curiosity about the culture and history and now I have to binge watch the other episodes!! Thank you for your work and your heart! 💜

I have two very close friends from Santa Cruz Del Quiche, and even though they don't speak Qu'iche, they always tell me about how great it was when they lived in Guatemala. All I've seen so far is pictures, but I've heard some stories, and now I see how true those stories really are. Keep up the amazing videos!!!

The Guatemalan speak many native American languages. And there Spanish is very much slower than ours. And the Guatemala Spanish is very similar to the Mexican Spanish. And the Guatemalan are proud of native American languages. G

Very interesting video / story. I wish I could have seen more of the artwork of your K'iche / Spanish friend. Maybe the artwork expresses some of the ethos of their K'iche language?
