For everyone talking about the random stops in the video and the stutters. I would just like to say that I did NOT use my first take and I cut out 99% of my stutters, some of them just slipped through the cracks since I was rushing to get out this video before Christmas, plus it’s the longest video I’ve ever made. I am taking all of the criticism to heart and I will be more careful from now on. Just know that if you heard the original audio before I edited it to use only the best take…. Holy crap it’s stutter central lmao.

you got this man, just need a bit more practice and honestly you need to feel more comfortable not saying verbatim whats on your script. I can tell thats whats messing you up. My advice, try to practice doing slight improvisations and not sticking to the exact words you wrote but rather get across the message and essence of them in whatever way feels natural as it comes out the mouth.
Otherwise, straight up, you will most likely not overcome this issue.

This video made me realize that the reason the orange bulborb is super high strung and doesn’t sleep well isn’t because it’s some kind of elite predator with quick reactions it’s because ITS scared of being predated which is probably also why it can be found more commonly in caves, hiding, and in groups

There IS actually another gameplay detail you've missed here!
    Enemy Spirits!
Whenever an enemy dies, they spawn a particle that vaguely looks like the spirit of the enemy flying away.
Bulbears and Groinks don't spawn these particles after their health is depleted, so it can be assumed that they never died in the first place and were indeed knocked unconscious.

really love this video! a few notes and/or questions from a biologist!
7:56 you state that bulbears and bulborbs are the same species and can reproduce, which appears inaccurate! theyre classified differently in the games, and while its not impossible for separate species to reproduce, we see no evidence of hybrid offspring.
13:44 I think theres some confusion about what bulborb larvae are. Any bulborb larvae that are found in the game can be of any species, but are not every species. Basically, all species' larvae look the same, and so its impossible to tell which one youre looking at until they mature. The empress bulblax that we see birthing larvae is of the O. kageyamii species, and thus all of her offspring would be regular red bulborbs like her. the extra "matriarcha" tacked on her name implies subspecies, but its more likely that its a way to signify the phase of life she is in. There are probably empress forms of other related species that we do not encounter.
25:00 this i agree with entirely! we actually still see some red on the rear of the orange bulborb, which suggests a VERY recent divergence.
36:00 again, unlikely that the empress is the source of ALL bulborbs, and each member likely doesnt breed with others. However it is probable that O. kageyamii russus, orangium and foliculus DO all interbreed or at least have the capacity, as they are the only true subspecies of one another within the grub-dog family. all other members are separate species.
45:00 I really like your conclusion at this point, and would love to emphasize that its probable that most grub-dogs have their own empress form! recognition of young is a very important aspect of bulborbs, atleast in my opinion. I think its interesting that grub-dogs that prey on their young are also those that tend to have mimics trying to pose as their young. Maybe the cannibalistic behavior is a result of parents trying to "weed out" false offspring? if this is the case then it could mean that all grub-dogs have parental instinct, and that those that appear to lack it are simply at odds with their nesting parasites.
amazing video, keep up the fantastic work and good job with how you presented the information. it was very well-done!

Interesting speculation, but I think it was stated that grub-dogs who prey on their young use the spotted patterns on their backs to identify members of the same species. This would explain them thinking of bulborb larvae and albino dwarf bulborb as prey, but confusing bredbugs as others of their species.

To put it in perspective for everyone else, that's finding exactly the right time you need to cut the audio at, (if splicing the clips, finding exactly the right time down to the milisecond sometimes, which can be heard in the video at least twice), actually editing it (which DOES take time), and rewatching the clip for every time you've edited it to see if it sounds right (which alone takes 3-10 times as long as the video), and that's without audio and text overlay, transition screens, planning the video, and writing the script.

I had a thought about the Hairy Bulborb that also extends to the rest of the Grub-Dog family.
    SPOILERS FOR PIKMIN 4!!!!
We know that the Grub-Dogs are named as such because they resemble Olimar’s dog, Bulbie. We never see Bulbie proper, but there is a doodle of him in one of Olimar’s voyage logs that shows he does greatly resemble a Bulborb. But it’s not just him. Oatchi of Pikmin 4 fame is also a dog that closely resembles a Bulborb in terms of structure. But what’s really interesting is that Oatchi is implied to be a distant descendant of the Ancient Sirehound, the final boss of Pikmin 4. We don’t know what family the Sirehound is apart of, but based on the fact that it loosely resembles the Bulborbs, it’s possible that it is also the ancestor of the Grub-Dog family as well as Oatchi. The fur the Sirehound possesses is probably caused by a gene that was most likely rendered vestigial in other Grub-Dogs due to it being unnecessary for survival, but the Hair Bulborb needs it, hence the gene was made more dominant. Also, Bulborb Larvae don’t have legs at birth, but they do have an appendage that resembles a tail, something the Sirehound also has and adult Grub-Dogs do not.

@@Shnarfbird if it came from space it would have been pikmin-ified like every other foreign lifeform exposed to pnf-404's air. Polyploidy (having extra full sets of genes) happens more often in plants, where it can result in larger sterile varieties of fruit, i.e. seedless grapes and oranges. That is almost certainly the fun fact they had in mind with the Jumbo Bulborb! Since it's usually a lethal genetic defect in animals, the Jumbo Bulborb surviving to adulthood is actually interesting, and IMO another example of weirdly plant-like biology at play.

  • @GreenOfFields
    @GreenOfFields 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +17

A thought occurs on the convoluted nature of Grubdog biology: the earliest scientific notes on the family come from Olimar and Olimar is not a biologist. He clearly has a keen interest, not unlike mine own self, but he is no specialist; case in point, he originally classed the bulborb larva as a separate species from the Empress Bulborb that birthed them. With this in mind it’s possible that later xenobiologists started building on this initial body of knowledge without immediately realizing the faulty nature of its source, as has happened in real life on many occasions.
All that said, the conclusions you come to are fantastic, we merely need to rejigger the scientific nomenclature as under your theory the various adult Bulborbs, Bulbears and Bulblaxes would be morphs rather than subspecies.

Enjoyable video so far (I'm on the whiptongue bulborb currently), and I've got some feedback for ya, particularly on audio. I think you're genuinely going places and I offer this advice in the hopes it helps you continue to improve. Sound design is all about feeling natural, so that's what I want to focus on.
When you're using background music, you do a good job of remembering to attenuate it (that is, lower the volume a bit) before you start talking. To help make that transition a bit smoother, you might consider a half-second or so of sliding the volume down so it's less jarring. This'll also let you get back into your voiceover any time you want instead of waiting for the music to reach a good point to cut the volume.
Speaking of background music, always make sure that you are clearly audible over it! The last thing you want is for your "background" music to become the foreground, and your voice to get lost somewhere behind it. A good example of what I mean is around the Orange Bulborb section, where the music gains high-pitched strings (around 22:24) that take attention away and drown out your voice. I would recommend either using a different track or further attenuating the music, but you may have other solutions.
Not a note, but a praise: using the bulborb scream as censorship is absolutely genius, lmao
That's all the advice I've got that I haven't seen from others. Again, this is a great video, and hopefully the big break that starts your career in earnest. Remember not to overwork yourself!
(I shall now proceed to write a timestamp comment)

    • @arand0mpers0n58
      @arand0mpers0n58 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

The other thing I would like to add is that at multiple times it sounds like there's either spliced some audio together in the middle of words or you stutter so fast it sounds like a weird skip in the words. There are a handful of times where it sounds like your words peter out as you lose some confidence in reading the script.
Just practice reading off a script and making it feel like you're normally telling this to a friend or something. Also don't feel too forced into saying everything on the script exactly how it's written. A lot of people will accidentally put too much stress on themselves and subconsciously ruin some of the flow of the lines. Make sure you're drinking a lot of water and if you need to, you can record lines at a slightly lower volume than you normally talk at to help with your vocal endurance on longer script readings. Also you should be listening to all of your recorded audio after you record it, so you can very quickly do a new take in case there's something in the background that you didn't notice at first.
Now for compliments. You do a great job at leaving the proper amount of space between sentences, and it never feels like every single line is a completely different recording that is stapled together. You're doing great at controlling the start of your line readings. A lot of people when reading lines tend to start too loud and then quiet down after they realize they're too loud. You also do a great job at naturally changing up your voice and the way you say words to convey a transition or something that's more important.
You've got a great foundation and you've definitely got a natural grasp on this. Keep this up and you'll grow pretty quick. Get some more practice in and really focus in on how to get yourself into the script reading zone and you'll be able to develop a very dedicated community.

Others have stated this better than I can but it's unlikely that a bulborb larva can become any form. The piklopedia states it is difficult to discern what species an albino Bulborb is, which implies that they are separate species but all their larvae look identical.
The piklopedia also describes some as subspecies but uses just species for others
Furthermore the scientific names were changed between games, and while still not accurate to real life as different life stages are named like subspecies, it seems to imply that many are separate species. One example is the Empress Bulblax who was changed to have the same name as the common Bulborb but frosty bulborbs have a different name. Granted larva and albino ones all have the same names, but that's probably for video gamey reasons (can't have 10 identical versions whose only difference is piklopedia name, though that would be neat)

I agree with a lot of what you said, especially the fact that those in the "bulblax" classification do seem to be separate in some way. Although, I do have some issues with your theory, in a purely academic way.
I feel like you neglect to consider the fact that the Albino Dwarf Bulborbs are classified as "1st Molt", whereas the two true Dwarf grub-dogs we see are classified as "2nd Molt". This indicates that there are 2nd Molt forms of all the other bulborb species, as indicated in the description of the Albino, when it talks about how the differentiating characteristics between each species only come in during further molts. And if these 2nd molts didn't exist for the other Bulborb species, what would the Breadbug mimics be mimicking? Also, classing the adult stage as the 3rd molt kinda disregards what a "molt" even is. In this case, it would probably be referring to a insect-or-reptile-like shedding of their outer skin in order to grow in size. The size difference between a 1st/2nd molt, Dwarf-sized bulborb and an adult is MUCH higher than what could be accounted for in one molt. The only reason we don't see these 2nd molt versions of the known species in-game, is for gameplay reasons. They'd be functionally identical to the existing dwarfs, and would require a separate Piklopedia entry, which would degrade the gameplay, hence they are excluded.
Another thing to note is that, in the older games, like Pikmin 2, the scientific name classification was pretty spotty, and not exactly accurate to real-world taxonomy. While it isn't exactly accurate even in Pikmin 4, changes were made to make things more accurate. For example, the Empress Bulblax and Bulborb Larva were changed from being their own separate species, to being within the Kageyamii species, but just lacking a subspecies in the case of the Larva, or having one of their own, in the case of the Empress. Thus, we can assume that those who *weren't* changed were done so intentionally, such as the Emperor still being put under the "Supremus" species, not the Kageyamii like some others, indicating it has its own separate life cycle.
I personally assume that all the Bulborbs that are classed as the "Kageyamii" species (the normal, Orange, and Hairy Bulborbs, plus the Albino dwarfs, the larvae, and the Empress) are able to inter-breed (as is the definition of a species), but ordinarily don't do so, being able to breed as any other organism would. The offspring they produce resemble the Bulborb Larva, no matter the species, and they all grow into young that resemble the Albino Dwarfs. However, they are generally left to fend for themselves, due to the fact that breadbug mimics cannot reliably be differentiated from actual Bulborb young past their 2nd molt. However, in times of crisis, one *existing adult female* female can develop into a Empress. I believe that the Empress we see is, in fact, simply an empress developed from a red Bulborb, and one could hypothetically develop from a Hairy or Orange Bulborb. We only don't see this because it wouldn't really improve the game experience. Then, all the Kageyamii bulborbs around her arrange into that ant/beetle-like social structure mentioned, to ensure the survival of the population, until the crisis ends and/or the Empress is killed.
Those species without breadbug mimics, however, do take care of their young, as can be seen with the Frosty Bulborb and the Spotty Bulbear. We can assume this is due to their unique morphology that would be difficult for a breadbug to evolve to mimic (eg. ice crystals and the intelligence and facial structure of the Bulbear) The same can be applied to the Whiptongue, having their signature tongue and snoot, but we don't see their young in-game, either because they simply don't come out to hunt with their parents, or just because adding another Dwarf to the game that functions exactly like the other existing three would be unnecessary and not improve the game experience.
Overall, great video, and I LOVE this sort of discussion about the ecology and biology of Pikmin's ecosystems. But we can't let ourselves forget that they are, in fact, games, and just because something doesn't exist/happen in-game, doesn't mean it doesn't happen in the universe.

Is pretty unlikely that bulborbs confuse bread bugs with their offspring. Rather, they lack a good sense of size and simply view them as smaller members of their own species. Never in their history would they have had babies that looked like the bread bugs, so this is not a confusion but an incomplete mimicry that is sufficient. We never see parental care from bulborbs towards bread bugs, only acceptance. If there's a lot of size variation that we just haven't seen, there could even be actual young or small bulbords mixed in or the entire relationship could be mutualistic and reinforced independent of similar visuals as is seen in the fauna of Earth.

  • @ok_barrett

    Couple quick facts:
Olimar and the scientific community of these games should not be so quick to give different species and subspecies names to the bulborbs and bulblaxes considering they can mostly all breed with the empress. That is how we actually mark things as the same species. Since they could be from the same mother but growing differently due to the environment, they would have the same name.
    Cool thing:
The way the environment affects how your body reads your genes is studied in a science called epigenetics.
    Last fact:
Down syndrome is just an extra copy of one chromosome. Polyploidy is when the entire chromosome gets doubled, and it’s the reason we wind up with some potatos with five times the genes as others.

They bring back enemies that had crystal armor in 3 and rock pikmin, but doesnt bring back the crystal armor
They have baldy long legs, yet no hairy long legs and have the programming of the pikmin to climb onto its legs to supposedly knock off its non-existent hair (which makes me question why not use the classic beady long legs)
Like the video said, there is only 1 orange bulborb in the entire game on one specific level

Something I do want to note: There are very short notes for a couple of the pikmin adventure "species" that you can get by unlocking statues of them in the hub area (I have played too many hours of nintendo land)
Bulborb: These grub-dog predators tend to sleep during the day and attack aggressively if woken from a nap. Bulborbs come in a wide variety of colors--now on sale at our gift shop!
Bilious Bulborb: The different-sized spots suggest that these may not be a true subspecies of Bulborb at all. Or perhaps they're just normal Bulborbs feeling a little under the weather
Bulblord: With its sharp teeth and devastating roll attack, this is a foe to fear. I highly advise you to take caution if you don't want to get crushed into scrap metal!
Of course, given that Nintendo Land is meant to be a theme park of sorts, they likely are just made up for the attraction, but they're neat little lines to have anyway.

    @thenortonanti 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

I'm a biology major and your video is great! Here's a few notes I've made
Most True Grub-Dogs seem to be different species, but all closely related to each other. Fiery and Frosty are most likely different tribes from Bulborbs due to needing very different skin tissue for their adaptations. They probably diverged to better adapt and compete with True Grub-Dogs. Whiptonges are probably a different tribe too since their mouth and tongues are structurally different. Bulbears are probably different genus than true Grub-Dogs. They are similar but have very different hunting, family, and facial features.
As for why we only have 2 out of many 2nd molts, it's probably that we have but we think they are Breadbugs because of how common Breadbugs are. It's very possible that very few Grub-Dogs make it to the 3rd or 4th stage of development. Hence, why Larva are birth so quickly but we don't see many adults. Imo, only females that are going to be a matriarch, have a 4th molt. Males do not. We see this in ants, where the queen becomes immobile. We do know what 2nd molt Red Bulborbs, because they are infected Bulbmin (juvenile)
Water Dumples was a divergence that is similar to Orcas are to mammals. A divergence that was fairly recent because they are amphibious and are not fully aquatic and still have feet. (ignoring Hey Pikmin!)
The entry for Moldly Dwarf Bulborb uses 'Bulborb' in a generic sense. similar to how we use 'bug' to describe animals that may not be insects like spiders and millipedes. This is also used like in Dwarf Bulborb. These Bulborbs may not be Frosties as the parasite presents in the skin. The blue skin may be either the parasite or the breaking down of skin tissue after death or a combination. This is also assuming Olimar is correct that these are Grub-Dogs and not infected Breadbugs. (What would be funny because moldy Rye bread is what ergot poisoning and LSD comes from.)
It's important to note that Olimar, while very intelligent and resourceful, is not a biologist. It's why he has had to make a lot of corrections in his notes on PNF-404.
I said a lot of words to say in short, irl the taxonomy would look very different than what Olimar thinks it would be

    3 things:
    1) Holy crap, keep up the good work! You’re clearly super passionate about this kind of content, great stuff
    2) Only slight critique is maybe to hold on the title card of each species for just a bit less time. I watch videos on 2x speed (all, not just yours) and it still felt like it lingered on the species names for a bit too long.
    3) Tiiiiny nitpick, but at 38:30 you say that polyploidy in humans leads to Down syndrome. Technically, Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of exactly one chromosome, chromosome 21. Polyploidy implies an extra copy of EVERY chromosome.
If you’re referring to meiosis mishaps leading to genetic disorders, then polyploidy and aneuploidy both exist, but are different, and cause wayyyy more disorders than just Down syndrome (turners syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome are the names for a human with XO and XXY sex chromosomes, respectively, as an example).

Cool video, as has been said elsewhere in the comments more videos like this talking about other species, like blowhogs for example, would be cool. My only issue is the transition periods between each creature seems a little long.

I’m decent at sprite work if you guys still need some help! Also I loved the video. It was amazing to listen to while I knitted

The edit of setting the Bulborb on fire was definitely the funniest edit in the vid

Bro I spent hours trying to find a lighter without a background before I eventually went. “Yknow what it’ll be funnier this way” 💀
