Labrador retriever would NOT be a first dog...very active and can be destructive...and supervision needed around other dogs...just my opinion..

My first dog is a Boston terrier. I literally found him on the streets. He was in poor shape. I had seen him wondering in the streets for days. I approached him with food & carefully picked him up took him to a local shelter which also had a vet. Vet said he been starved. I left him at the vet but I couldn’t stop thinking about him so I went to check if he was adopted & he was still there so I took him home & his my best friend in the world. Best dog.

Being a vet myself, i would never recommend pugs and labradors to first time owners as due to health problems(corneal ulcers, skin allegies, obesity, respiratory distress) in pugs and indiscriminate feeding habits. First time dog owners are not usually aware of some important managemental facts that must be followed while keeping these dogs.

In all honesty, in the age of the internet, a person who doesn't sufficiently research anything that's going to be in their life for 10+ years, probably isn't ready for a dog.

My first dog was a pug. He had respiratory issues, couldn't deal well with heat/cold. Had to sleep in bed with us. Great dog but I wouldn't get another pug. Not fair to a dog to be intentionally bred deformed. I've since had 2 rescue shelties, a rescue border collie and a rescue "retriever mix". The rescues have all been wonderful. Lower vet bills too.

Choose a dog that suits your personality and lifestyle I.e an outdoorsy dog if you like to camp/hike, etc. Despite a husky’s reputation for being hard to train, husky is what I chose and she’s not hard to train if you and the dog understand each other. I love my husky more than anything in the world.

I have a Husky-Akita mix named Aisha. She is a joy to have and helped me through some difficult times.
She has that fluffy, almost bunny like Fur. She is very energetic, especially for her age (she's 10 years old). She has a beautiful, friendly personality and gets along with anyone and anything: People, other dogs, cats, ducks, chicken and especially Children. When there are kids around, you can be sure she'll take care of them as best as a dog can :)

Huskys Need a Cold area to live. After 13 Degree Celsius they are unable to run normally and everything hotter is even worse. 3.Huskys Need About 10 each day of going outside and running to be fullfilled. I hope you have all of that for the Huskys sake.

I researched pugs, because they’re adorable, but they have a TON of problems people have to be aware of, like skin problems, breathing problems, and more. The only reason I’d really see a pug being on here is if you pay the lot for surgery so it would actually be remotely healthy, or it being closer to the original, with not as flat faces and longer legs.
Of course, they are still good options, but people have to be aware of the many requirements. Hopefully they get good homes and that people don’t get them because they’re popular. Every dog deserves to get the care they so need.

I agree, I had a 3 month pug and 2 weeks after we adopted him we had to let him go. We put him down because he had breathing problems and he wouldn't want to eat or drink. As much as I loved him, I wouldn't get a pug again of fear of having health problems with the dog.

I had several "first dogs". When I was a toddler, my parents had two Afghan Hounds and a Great Dane. One of the Afghans was my play partner for years. When I was about 10 years old, the first dog thar was supposedly entirely my responsibility was a female mini-doberman. She was with me maybe two years. The neighbors three houses over had a boy with a severe mental disability. This dog took a liking to the boy, and when I was at school, she would somehow get out of the house and go play with him. After about a month of this couple coming every night to return the dog, my mom convinced me to give her up to this family. We lived there for a couple more years, and she seemed to be well taken care of.
From 18 to 33 I had a very nomadic life, so, I did not had dogs. But at 33 I went to the pound just to see, and someone had found on a field a box with three pups, Labpei mutts, about three weeks old. Only one survived. She was about two and a half pounds when I took her home. Right now she is almost 6 years old, 55 lbs, and is looking at me from the couch with those beautiful hazel eyes of her.
Since then we have rescued two more dogs. A senior blind Sammy, who is the loveliest most adorable dog, who right now is by my feet (the labpei is quite independent and not so affectionate, but loyal as none), and the small one of the house (at about 30lbs) is a very young, very rambunctious mutt, who seems to be a mix between a lab and a whippet. I don't see her, so she is probably sleeping in MY bed.

My 1st dog was a Rottweiler. I spent years asking to have a dog and finally my parents caved in, due to brothers helping with the plea, so we went to see dogs ( with basic knowledge of the breeds we were seeing ) and then we came to our Rottweiler and it was love at first sight! Best dog ever, honestly, and made me completely in love with the breed and recently we got another ( as out first passed away a couple of years ago ) and still dream of a dog, well behaved, loving and easy to train with the basics.

My family has had many dogs over the years. My first dog was a wonderful miniature Poodle. I decided a while back to get two Standard Poodles.....the best dogs ever. They are brothers from the same litter. As puppies, they were already more well behaved then most of our adult dogs had been. Added plus, no dog hair around the house. Loving, intelligent, obedient, playful, gentle....they are the total package.

My family's first dog was a miniature (the middle-sized) poodle. She was silver and despite my parents, neither of whom had ever had a dog in either of their families, was incredibly trainable, brilliant, sweet, and honestly other than the grooming, which my mom learned to do at home she was absolutely the PERFECT first dog. That said, this was back in the '60s and I very rarely see a poodle as nice as she was these days. We followed her with a few mutts, a Doberman, a Golden Retriever, a Pomeranian, a few Chinese Crested, an Australian Shepherd, a few more mutts and lots more Goldens. We typically rescue adult dogs the last 25 or so years and average keeping 3-4 dogs at a time. I think Golden Retrievers are the very best dogs for almost anyone, though I'd recommend them for kids over 5-6, and they do shed a TON twice a year. But they are worth every hair to me. We currently have 3 and one Doberman.

My first dog- the family dog was a Peekapoo (Pekingnese Poodle mix) a great dog but NOT child friendly! I was taught to treat him with respect and never try to pick him up because he would snap lol! Otherwise he was a great dog, very smart and fun to play with.

My first dog was a Lurcher (a greyhound mixed with a collie), she was pretty chill though a bit mad as a young dog. Definitely prone to wandering off when young, most sighthounds are though. At home she would be sleeping 80% of the time and the other 20% following you around the house.

I never really owned a dog per say, but I grew up with dogs courtesy of my grandparents. One of the first dogs I remember was Smokey, a GSD mix that originally belonged to my deceased uncle. There's also Blackie (A flat coated retriever), Zack (A peekapoo), and Maggie (Mixed breed, but she belonged to my great aunt and uncle on my grandma's side). Over the years, I watched so many pet shows (Thanks Animal Planet), read books about different dog breeds, took a night class at the local tech center, and I work with therapy dogs (In conjunction with special needs kids).
Right now, I am neck deep in the research phase of choosing which breed to get first (There's so many breeds that made the short list that it's hard to narrow down [Examples are papillon, Icelandic sheepdog, silken windhound, greyhound, toy fox terrier, Norwich terrier, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel... See what I mean?] because of the variety).

The choice is usually made for me. I've never gone to pick out a dog. They always seem to find me. There's a lot to be said about rescues and I'm sure you have heard it all. But I do applaud you for doing research on which Breed is right for you. I wish more people would.

My family’s first dog was a Rottweiler but my first personal dog was an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Her name was Bundles and was part of my mum’s litter. Unlike her mother, though, she needed insanely amount of exercise that I couldn’t match. Eventually I found she would have a better life in a more suitable home. The family she ended up with also had her twin brother (they came from the same sack) and they are their babies. After she was in her new home I researched breeds to find the right breed for me. I ended up adopting a Yorkie who was perfect for me. I will always have Yorkies now, they’re the best!

I am surprised that Cavalier King Charles didn't make the list. Cavaliers are good in apartments or houses, great with kids, super easy to train and they don't bark a lot only when necessary. They can be lap dogs and sporty too.

My first and all the rest of my dogs have been shelties. They are so sweet and cute and amazingly beautiful! I don’t mind their shedding, it seems to be the fuzzy undercoat. I hate the hollow hair shedding of retriever and beagle dogs.,
Shelties are smart and love to play. Only other dog I’d consider is standard poodle.

I’m not sure what kind of lifestyle you have but in general good dogs in general I would recommend are:
      Small dogs-
      1. Bichon Frise- The Bichon Frise is considered a great all-around pet that is a playful yet gentle dog. They get along great with kids and other dogs. They have a soft, non shedding coat that stays incredibly soft even into adulthood. I have one I received as a gift. He’s the best!
      2. Toy/ miniature poodle- The Poodle is a well-known, popular and versatile dog breed that is available as miniature, toy or standard size. These lovable dogs respond well to training and are highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of households - including those with children. Toy Poodles are an intelligent breed that suit people who can spend a lot of time with them. They don't have too many severe health problems and they come in 3 sizes. So basically, there’s a poodle for everyone!
      3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel- This sweet and affectionate breed, and is of a small size and gentle demeanor. Their moderate energy level means they need daily exercise to maintain health, however they don’t need to be heavily exercised and only require basic grooming despite their medium-length coat. They also need basic training and respond best to positive reinforcement and praise, thriving in all kinds of households. They also get along well with children and other dogs.
Papillon- As one of the most intelligent and trainable toy breeds, Papillons get along well with the entire family and adapt to a range of households. While their high energy level and inquisitive nature means
they need a lot of exercise, they can amuse themselves with balls and other toys easily. Despite their fluffy coat, they have minimal shedding and respond well to positive reinforcement during training
      Medium-
      1. Rough collie- A rough collie makes a great companion dog for a single person, but he will bond with all family members, not just the one who feeds him. ... Rough collies are intelligent, and they are always watching people and learning, so it is important to train them early and often.
      Large-
      1. Similarly, the Golden Retriever is another wonderful pick for a first-time dog owner. Golden Retrievers love to spend time with their favorite humans and respond very well to positive training methods. This breed is perfect for a moderately active family.
Another good pick is the golden doodle, a cross between the golden retriever and the poodle. This is a great dog for someone who wants the lovable kind personality of the golden retriever without all of that heavy shedding. The golden doodle has grown to be a very popular breed.
      2. The Labrador Retriever is especially suited to active families seeking a medium- to large-sized dog.The Lab possesses several great traits that make them an excellent choice for first time owners.
      Labrador Retrievers are very smart.
In fact, ranked as the seventh most intelligent dog breed.
Coupled with their natural “team-player” demeanor, Labs are typically very easy to train.
They’re also great with kids, and owners are unlikely to have much trouble socializing them to get on well with other pets.

As a child I don’t remember the breed of my first dog. All I remember was that she was black and lab like I think but I don’t think it was the breed. I don’t remember her too well. Then we had 2 Shetland Sheepdogs and 2 field springer spaniels. The one black & white Springer was my favorite. As an adult and my first dog with kids was a mostly lab dog that looked like a lab but was 1/4 husky. She recently passed away at 11 years old. Miss her dearly. We have decided our next dog will be a golden retriever.

Nice list, but I don't agree with Shelties for a first time dog owner without researching into keeping dogs with a high drive to learn and move. They're very energetic, can be overly fearful and aloof or fearfully aggressive if not thoroughly socialised, have moderate grooming needs, and are far too intelligent to not be trained and mentally stimulated to a high degree. Most first time dog owners probably don't want to do dog sports and competitive obedience, and those activities are where a Sheltie is in its element. Not that a Sheltie doesn't make an amazingly affectionate companion when it isn't doing work, but there's a reason why they're a favourite of dog sport enthusiasts :)
