    Awesome video, thank you. Getting ready to take my dad‘s boat out by myself for the first time, no clue what I’m doing, LOL. I’ll definitely be starting it in front of my house, instead of out on the lake first.

      Jake, I'm excited for you. I remember when I started taking my dad's boat out myself too. It's not a bad idea to practice backing up in a parking lot or if you have room at the house. You may want to check out this other vid I did on the subject, LINK- th-cam.com/video/5wuZeNmz5XE/w-d-xo.html Let me know how it goes and thanks for watching, KPO.

    Just got a Glas Ply Boat w a Evinrude 145 hp. Being its in the heart of winter I wanted to let the motor ( Plus a Yamaha 8 HP kicker) run a bit before winterizing them.
    Nice video just what I needed.
    Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas!

    You can use those ear muffs all day long. The real test to see if your motor runs correctly is to put it in the water, under load. If you are just flushing it out, that's fine. But if you do any mechanical changes to your motor, test it under load in a barrel.

    I have a hose hanging on top of my outboard
    When the mechanic came to winterize it he attached it to the hose
    My question is did he ruin my engine bye not using muffs?

      Yes, water cooled outboards should have water circulating through them. Line could be plugged or water pump might be shot. Strange that it's happening to both motors. Let me know how it turns out.

    Hey Nick, I went to look at a used boat for sale and after he put the ears on and started it there was no water coming out so he kept giving it throttle for about 5 minutes then after he finally cut it off he took the lower off and it was the rubber impeller gone bad. He said he would replace it but I'm concerned that he may have damaged the motor. What's your thoughts?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You know I had a cooling water failure on the motor in this video out on the water once. I didn't notice it until it gave me an audible alarm. You could run it for a couple of minutes at low speed until you got the temp alarm then it would need to cool down and you could do that again. That's how I got off the lake that day. I figured until I got the high temp alarm I wouldn't damage anything. That was over 12 years ago. So my thought is that the motor you're looking at is probably fine, but I am NOT an engine expert.

    With these muffs can you test the prop gear system too, the forward and reverse while it's running without wrecking the lower unit. Thank you.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hate to speculate, but I would have it checked out by a professional. Was the fluid like oil or water? It might be nothing, but get it check out, KPO.

    How long should you run the motor, so it’s warm enough for the lake! And you don’t have to deal with cold start in the lake?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just run it for a minute or so, just to make sure it's working. I might not take it to a lake for days or weeks after that. KPO.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David, hose adapter outboard motor muffs. Yes, I see them online at Overtons and I've seen them at Walmart. I would think anywhere boat supplies are sold. Thanks for watching, KPO.

  • @khmer-kromwashington2785
    @khmer-kromwashington2785 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice and short video. Question is: is it ok to start the motor with waters/muff to maintain and lube motor during winter time. Maybe once/week or once/month.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only concern I would have is water can get trapped up in the water pump and then freeze. Then if you start it in cold temperatures it can rip up the water pump. KPO

      @khmer-kromwashington2785 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @tzampini

    Great video! I have a question for you: when the engine is off, does all the water completely drain out of it? I'm asking because I live in New Hampshire where it freezes in the winter. Do I need to flush the engine with an antifreeze solution through the muffs? Or will it drain completely by gravity? Thanks!!

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never heard of flushing with antifreeze. I have been told to slowly pull the starting pull cord a few times (if you have one) to push out any last little bit of water. If you have electric start I've been told to bump the start button just enough to turn the engine over but not start it. This will also push out any last bit of water. Now I was NOT told these things by an outboard motor mechanic, but by someone I consider knowledgeable in this area. KPO.
