Spot on! A relative of mine was prepared to buy a Land Rover in 94, until I convinced him to first look at the Land Cruiser. He still has it, with almost 400 thousand miles on the original drive train. I’ve told my son to be sure to buy it, if he ever decides to sell it. I have a feeling that day will never come. And finally, I’ll bet money that Rover he thought about buying, was crushed and recycled years ago. Regards

I was driving Toyota Landcruiser and Pickup in the Sahara desert. Mostly off road. The old models did not have much power but the engines were indestructible. After 500000 km usually the frame of the Landcruiser got soft from mechanical stress. The workshop could not weld fast enough... The pickup were better.

Not true, there a some real dogs out there that are prone to major problems within the first 100k. The Nissan cvt issues come to mind with their cvt drive bands that unravel and rapidly disassemble in a catastrophic manner. Like wise there are other CVT driven cars out there that suffer from the same failure rate as the Nissan brand, the Chevy Traverse and KIA Forte among others . The use of plastic components in engine and drive trains is another troubling trend that has shown to be an issue in recent years as an examlpe recent Nissan 1.8 liter and Chevy 1.4 liter models.

I acquired an 88 Jeep Cherokee almost 2 years ago whose odometer wasn't engaged for who knows how long but stopped at 213,000 miles. Had been a ranch vehicle and abused but still purrs, still runs/drives good. A lower ball joint and control arm were bad but replaced those and all the other like parts as sets just to make a fresh start and then the usual usual replacing of a gasket here, a hose there, maybe a fuse, refresh a ground, replace a bulb, that kind of stuff but it's a cruiser. It's not fast cuz need to update gearing to accommodate slightly larger tires but a decent ride with a 4" lift and 4" wider stance. By now I'm sure the mileage is more like 300,000+ miles but it's all good and I love my car. A great and fun project also.

@@josecamacho575 but you have to compare cost of ownership. How many trans did it go through? Is it ORIGINAL miles, without major repairs or rebuild. Cuz a lot of 300+ Ford's, aren't running the original trans or engine. Especially explorers, which are hands down one of the least reliable SUVs in America, next to the dodge journey.
So 500k+ on a land cruiser, isn't the same as 500k on a Ford. Both can make it with enough money thrown at it to do so. Just the Toyota will do it far easier with less needs.
I have an 07 4runner with 162k currently. And THAT is considered sort of the low end for mileage of that year. Now explorers of the same gen, in one piece (shit falling off of it, exterior/interior pieces completely missing, rear end sag, non working hatch/rear wiper, or running at all) it's rare to see. Most 07-2010 explorers I see, are in junk yards, rotting in someone's driveway, on their 3rd-4th trans, engine was rebuilt 100k ago, etc. They're not even comparable, not even close. Reliability isn't just engine and drivetrain only. Toyota is quality throughout, Ford/Jeep/Dodge/GM may have a solid engine, but trans is shit, or they will go 300k+, but....will look like shit, cuz things fall off for no reason, cracked dash, broken parts, electrical issues. Etc.
Bottom line is, on a Toyota that you do the recommended maintenance and take care of it. 200+k literally isn't shit. On our domestics, that's like end of life (cuz they're built to break) for the majority of those owners. So 200k on a Toyota, isn't the same as 200k on a domestic. They're barely getting started, when the other is hanging on to it's last legs.

I live in the southeast U.S where all I see is more old 1990s versions of Ford /Chevy compared to Toyotas being a 2012 and being considered old on the streets ,I know for sure that ford /chevys owners tend to be more of a car enthusiasts thus keeping their car for a long time , can’t say the same for Toyotas because toyota owners constantly want to upgrade every 2-3 years

      @MyCrippledWings 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@josecamacho575 I'm in AZ, former SoCa resident. You'll see more 80s-90s Toyotas more than any american of the same era. People are more likely to restore a Toyota (those known to last a really long time) than they would a Ford/Chevy/dodge/Jeep of the same years. Because they will actually be WORTH restoring. Classics don't exactly count as you cant, not appreciate the dedication and beauty of a restored classic vehicle. But the 3rd gen 4runners 3.4 v6 are literally bullet proof. Many, many, many 300+k examples exist. Original engine/trans. No rebuild. Just maintenance.
Only 3 main things kill Toyotas predominantly, severe neglect, rust (if you live in a rust belt. But again not Toyota specific as any vehicle, any brand, would rust to shit, if not properly cared for. And lastly, being totaled. They're not known for bullshit like premature engine/trans, electrical failures like our American brands are.
In regards to explorers. More people are more likely to invest in what a 4runner needs, than an explorers. In regards to getting that high mileage out of it. Reason you may see more 90s or so american, where you are. Is predominantly the owners dumped so much money into them, they have no choice but to keep, cuz they literally aren't worth anything resale.
When I got my 4runner for example. Base 07, 2wd only, v6 (v8 4x4 models, and the 09 trail (unicorn cus only one that came with factory rear locker), are more sought after) with 112k at purchase, was STILL worth $5k more than a 2014 limited AWD ford explorer with Ecoboost and only 68k on it at the time, was. Granted they're not directly compatible as one is a body on frame truck based SUV, other is a crossover poser SUV.
Today, even with my oxidation, 162k miles, I can still get as high as $12k for it. Purchase it for $13.4k 6 years ago. (minus the $7k the factory piece of shit 05 f150 I came from, that is. 45k went straight to auction, no dealership wanted it, including Ford itself)
For what they are, you truly can't beat a 4runner in regards to longevity, cost of ownership, and price. Granted I take care of it best I can. This will EASILY outlive explorers 10yrs newer than itself, my wife's 2011 Forester, my mom's 2018 Forester (she bought new), any given dodge, jeep, gm 10+yrs newer than itself. These gens average 400k+ that's the literal average so far for 03-09 models. (most sold vs still on the road today with original engine, trans, etc).
Your parents explorer is a rarity. Cuz for the majority of owners, they didn't even see 150k before a major repair was needed, IF it was still even driveable. 90s explorers were notorious for catastrophic failures. And some years according to carproblems.com top the do not buy used list, or labeled avoid like the plague. What keeps explorers even still a thing, is similar to how wrangler is still around. It's massive cult following. Not because it's actually a good vehicle.
In regards to Ford, they stopped selling the vast majority of their lineup, starting in 2020, and only kept their trucks, the explorer, and mustang predominantly. Because they are literally outsold by every other automaker, in every other catagory, but trucks. The f150 is one of the most sold, however is also one of the least reliable trucks you could buy. Only vehicles ford actually makes semi decent is the diesels. Everything else is (you can Google this yourself) subpar in quality and reliability compared to competitors.
Not a single year for explorer, since they were introduced, did they not have a massive recall, it ends up on list of worst SUV/crossovers you could buy. Next to original bronco, the explorers top the list for highest drivers and passangers deaths in an accident. Out of ALL vehicles sold in the U.S. not just for SUV/crossovers.
I did a shit ton of research because of the truck I had. Couldn't pay me to own another American brand. And ford for sure (not souly because of the truck.) Lost my business for life. My mother currently works for them actually, and personally would never own a Ford. In fact, last american she's owned was a 92 Chrysler Sebring convertible, she bought new (was totaled by a drunk driver). Back in 95. She's been in automotive finance for last 30yrs or so. And ford is first american brand she's ever worked for. Regrets it too, cuz they promised her better hours and pay, than what the Subaru she came from was giving her (she absolutely loved it there). Only to short change her (she makes far far less. They do Not Pay her close to her actual worth). Ford is a fucking shit company bruh. And for last 2 decades or so, they been selling their loyalist factory clunkers.
Check this out too. Lol. When's the last time you've seen a 4runner commercial? They're very rare. Yet, they have no issues selling despite that. (cuz they've proven themselves worthy for DECADES), But explorer commercials are EVERYWHERE! 4runners still outsell them if you remove law enforcement, and fleet sales from the overall sales). Plus to show how desperate ford is, they compare their new crossover explorers to the 4runners. They're not even in the same class bro. The Highlander is a direct competitor to the new explorers. But they will take shots at ANYTHING, to make their vehicles appear to be the better choice. Like a raptor vs a base model Tacoma. Lol. Only thing they prove with that, is the Tacoma doesn't need all that extra shit, to still be 90% just as capable.
Anyway, today, no explorer or ford for the matter (outside fleet and diesels) average 200k+ from average consumer ownership. Most ditch them as soon as warranty/lease expires on them. Then get a newer one, or something else entirely. Rinse and repeat.

@@josecamacho575 where I am, we have a few 1st gens (original 4runners, with the legendary 4cyl in them. Though, some enthusiast have done the 3.4 swap. Same goes for 2nd gen owners as well) those are 80s, still being daily driven, off-roaded (lots of trails to hit, where we now live), than their are any given 80s explorer or American counterpart in general. Still original, some upgraded, some age really got to em, but....they never leave them stranded, ever. Which...is a fucking death sentence out her, if middle of nowhere in the dead of summer (averages 120°+ when summer really kicks in). Shit, since I've owned mine, lost count of how many newer Ford's/jeeps/gms I had to jump, or help the passangers get to somewhere cooler. (like give them a ride), because their "new" vehicle left them stranded In the middle of nowhere, because they just 'stopped' no warning.
In fact, had this one 06 explorer (I asked what year, as I knew it was close to mine) owner at a local gas station ask me how many miles I had on it. (at the time, was 152k) he then asked when I replaced the trans, or if I did anything major. I said 'nope, it's all original' where he replied "BULLSHIT! No way that cheap Jap crap hasn't had a major repair" I'm like "bruh, these average 350k+ on just basic maintenance alone." Which he just couldn't grasp, kept saying I was lying to them, etc .
Anyway, he was just rude and shit, no reason, just was. Goes to start his explorer, shit would not start. I looked him dead in the eye, mine starts right up, and drove off. Any other time, I would of offered to help.
I'm bummed though, cuz the brutal summers took it's toll on my paint. (I rarely ever wash it, and it's never been re-waxed since I owned it ,so part brutal climate, and neglect). But it STILL runs like the day I got it 6 yrs ago. Shits a tank otherwise. EVERYTHING works. No leaks, ANYWHERE. it's original to AZ actually. Never been resprayed so original owner at least had a garage or otherwise took very good care of it. But between him who owned it those 9yrs, and me. He's only ever did routine recommended maintenance (predominantly oil changes only). I recently changed my brakes/rotors (they were FACTORY), Plugs (at 149k, again those were FACTORY), Alternator (only because shop I took it too, fucked up and got oil all over my engine, killed my battery too (oil seeped into the cells), but I couldn't prove) serpentine belt (v6 is timing chain, so less maintenance than v8 models), that's pretty much it so far for outside oil change related stuff. Diff is original (been planning to drain and refill, just...it's either too hot, too cold, too windy, too rainy (when it does rain.) Then, when it's cool, mayflies, mayflies EVERYWHERE! fuck this state tbh. Lol.
Trans fluid is original too. So far no Ill effects, but yeah, I need to get to em before it goes from preventive, to too late. Plus, I don't make much to begin with, and that truck really fucked me up. The difference in quality, and reliability is literally night and day. For once I can fucking breath, it's paid off, and I don't have to worry at all, that it will ever leave me stranded somewhere. Especially out here. Can't beat that feeling bro.
When we first moved here. A neighbor (same street but next block over) was original owner to the 84 4x4 Toyota pickup he still had (pre Tacoma I think is what they are). Over 800k ORIGINAL miles. He proved it on his odometer. Told me he's never had to rebuild or replace the engine/trans yet. Was very guy who told me to dump my 05 f150 asap. As he himself also had an 06 but larait. (he's owned since new) he told me, he had to replace both the engine and trans at just 65k miles on it. And would of gotten rid of it, but he paid out of pocket for those items as it just expired warranty. So not worth what he would get back for it. He takes care of his shit bruh. So not all owners who keep Ford's, keep them because they truly want too. But more so because they are forced too. And with mine, I was almost forced too, whether I liked it or not. Also at the time, it was newest vehicle I owned, lowest miles by minimum 150k. And yet, had the most issues (first vehicle out of 9, I ever owned to fail smog. Shit only had 38k miles on it at the time), it was straight up, worst vehicle I've ever owned to date. Had more fucking issues (well documented and known issues) inside that one truck, than all 8 vehicles I've owned prior, COMBINED. Everyone I ever met or family member that owned a ford, had buyers remorse. Shit, my dad is as redneck as the come. (born and raised upstate NY and I'm originally from back east). Him and my family on that side are Chevy or dodge people. None own Ford's (and it's a huge family on his side), mom's side, none own American period. Especially now. Stepdad is a Chevy man. So, growing up, my mother had Oldsmobile, and step dad Chevy's. Even in the 80s, my mom knew Ford's were trash. Lol
