Those who know in the comments are stating that the song is an overt statement against the British-imposed famine on Ireland. Of course it is, that's why Irish fans sing it. But the fact that British - and in particular English - players are encouraged to learn the song, and sing it...just shows why the Lions is such a special team. Not just in rugby, but in sport. It's about coming together, not celebrating the divisions so common in other spheres.
HDDF - yep, the players coming together and having the respect for one another enough to sing this shows why the Lions is such a special team. Love it! From an Aussie whose Grandad was from Athlone! 🇮🇪 ☘️
I absolutely love the fact that Joe Marler isn't even looking at the lyrics, what a small subtle detail that speaks such volume! What an amazing thing to see as an Irishman
Ha. ha..they left out the verse with the lines "Against the Famine and the crown I rebelled they shot me down"..More than 7000 poor people were buried in a mass grave from one parish alone in West Clare..during the Famine..
Pizza Parker the song is about the famine you spanner it’s not fictional, if you listen to the lyrics it’s about a man stealing corn to feed his family/children and he gets caught and is shipped of to Australia/new South Wales. The character may have been made up but the story definitely happend
Amazing, the camaraderie of the Lions every 4 years is something I absolutely love and to see this is another sign of that togetherness. Proud to be Irish and proud to support every Lions player each time they step on the pitch.
Alot of Micks getting upset in the comments about the English lads singing this beautiful anthem. They're trying to get everyone together, castigating 80% of the room isn't going to help 'd'cause' is it now yer feckin' eejit. Cromwell's just as hated in Britain as in Ireland. You're really not helping fight the stereotype of Irish men being thick as two short planks now are you?
Bullshit you left out the most important part. Our past makes who we are. Fighters, lovers, warriors, strong, and much more. Never forget out of respect for our ancestors!!!!!
See in Northen Ireland we sing... For once we watch the small freeee birds fllllyyyy, ohhh baby let the freee birdsss fly ....... Our love was on the wing ( Fuck the Queen ) we have dreams and songs to sing ( IRA ) its so lonely round the Fields of Athenry
In rugby, Ireland is the only country who refuse to play their national anthem away from home for fear of offending a couple of their players who give their allegiance to another country and a foreign monarch but were born on the island of Ireland, how pandering and pathetic is that?
Why sing a song if you are not prepared to sing all the verses, even the ones that tell the truth about British terror in Ireland. These rugby guys, including the Irish ones are a bunch of hypocrites. The Irish are the only country who don't play their national anthem away from home for fear of offending their English masters.

As a Scottish man, I have so much respect for Joe Marler for that.

You would never ever see this in soccer.

Whoever said that the song is fictional hasn’t a clue what the Irish have been through
Jaysus the goosebumps this still gives me singing this in Poznan v Spain when we where 4 nil down
Why would you have goosebumps? Is it because the singers were a bunch of hypocrites leaving out the second verse?

Best rugby song ever

Epic
I don't think the organisers new the full meaning of the song
Sam F1401 the Irish players chose it...
CrazyDaveAero6 don't think so mate
CrazyDaveAero6 if you've sung this in the Aviva the you would know the pride and passion this song gives Irish people
Oh yes they did...because they left out the second verse on purpose..Which is the nicest verse of the song.
Doesn't matter. This means alot.
good attempt
Brits singing a song about the opression of the Irish people majority probably dont even know what its about
They didn't sing the verse " against the famine and the crown I rebelled the cut me down"
Tommy Evers it's a pity they left that out. Maybe for a reason I say 😉😂
Celtic Gaelic Irish Catholic i know right that's the best line
Tommy Evers wish the Irish lads sang it
Celtic Gaelic Irish Catholic ya definitely
I was waiting for the english players to sing: "against the famine and the crown I rebelled they cut me down".
That'll happen as soon as the Southern Irish sing God Save The Queen.
@@thesmithersy then why sing the song at all?
@@thesmithersy I'm from the north and I'll rot in hell before I sing gstq.

Why did they sing any?
For the same reason the Scots don't sing the 6th verse of God Save the Queen...
That's about the crown
