I remember watching this game back in 2012. I started watching football earlier in the year at 31 years old while my mom was in the ICU for weeks before succumbing to her illness. I think I watched all the Euro matches that I could handle, and when the Irish started belting out The Fields of Athenry, it gave me goosebumps. My mom celebrated her Irish ancestry, so it definitely gave me the sense of her presence!
Wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, facing elimination... and just listen. That's heart, man. That takes *heart*. I'll never forget this. Thanks for the upload. "If you're lucky enough to be Irish, you're lucky enough."
I will never forget this. At the time I was in absolute awe at what was going on and almost moved to tears, still am today. Much, much respect from Portugal.
This is one of few magical moments, which I remember from this Euro. I was a kid then and felt much respect for Irish fans. For me it was something new, something astonishing that fans can be so proud of their team and their country when they are losing 4-0 and support them until the end. Moments like this taught me that you should always believe in yourself, your team, your family or nation. Even if a win is impossible, just fight for yourself and show the world your best side to make you remembered and admired like the Irish fans.
Unfortunately which is a huge understatement - Ireland is now no--more thanks to successive corrupt governments. It is being taken over by massive illegal migration from foreign lands that do not respect or value Irish culture or our way of life - Our beautiful little island is being over-run by Islam and Moslems and we have no-where else to go - this is our only home-and it is being over-run and destroyed by our thoughly corrupt political leaders. They must surely be made accountable !!!
Just a beautiful moment in world football. Outplayed, outshone, of course. No question. Outclassed? Out-voiced? Not a chance. Their journey had ended long before, plain to see. The legacy that that group of fans were determined to leave was nothing less than sublime. Beautiful.
Married a polish girl in 2011, was at this game and all my polish relatives and friends never miss a chance to talk about this game and the Irish fans in general, it was a galvanising moment in my relationship with my inlaws. The polish news had special reports from cities all over poland with Irish fans having fun and cleaning up trash in the city, and funny banners written in Polish seeking polish girls hanging outside bars 😂. It was really enjoyable having my inlaws transfixed with Irishness and translate news reports for me and being thoroughly impressed with Irish character to point of bamboozled. It was after a period of 10 years where Ireland had a lot of polish come to ireland for work so there was a lot of curiousity to visit poland and many Irish had polish friends there to show them about and put Irish wit and humour in polish on banners and flags. It was a great time.
But you have to say that the German commentor really had a feeling for the situation and he was paying respect to the irish fans by not saying almost anything.
Came back to this after a few years.. To be fair the commentator had not much to say becos the game was done.. Think Spain took it easy. But yes class supporters.
Actually, no, he deliberately didn't speak to give the audience the feeling of the atmosphere in the stadium, even years after he said, he felt it was his duty to shut up to honor the Irish supporters
huge respect from a english and and wigan fan, showing what being a football fan is all about. singing your heart out and doing your part not only for your team and yourself, but your county. brilliant!!!
Yeah, i'm french and i think Irland could make a good performance on the euro...Italia and Sweden are not to strong for your team, even Belgium...i think sincerely Ireland would make a better perf than the 2012'perf!
One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in sports. I will support Ireland from now, I'll sing this song in front of my TV with you. HUGE RESPECT from Brasil, all the best for you!
saw this live on polish tv and thought it was spanish fans chanting not knowing what the commentators were saying (EDIT - i’m australian)... then the melancholic sadness of the chant became apparent and my heart swelled, i got a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.. the best sporting moment i’ve ever seen... still brings a lump to my throat -as the media said next day, ‘IRISH FANS JUST WON THE WORLD CUP’.. bravo!!!

@@KINNARAMONEY Sorry Bryan, I didn't see your comment for a long time. Hope you can excuse me. Here the full translation of all the commentator said: We like to listen when the Irish fans sing the end of the game. The Spaniards hit the right note today. It was a great composition of twists and turns. In possession, it was a prime example of how to master a predictable opponent with limited resources, how to set him up and make up for everything in the second half in terms of consistent chance exploitation that was missed in the first half. (End) That's not the end of the song, but the Spaniards said it all with their performance on the pitch. Torres receives instructions for the first interview he is about to give. 4:0 defeated the world and European champions harmless Irish, fully deserved at the height. Kind regards! ;)
