This dinner is the secret sauce to Rush. They actually like each other. They are legitimate best friends. They arent out to prive anything. There is no ego. Theyre just a silly group of best friends playing music together.
My favorite story about these guys comes from Gene Simmons. Rush used to open for KISS in their early days... and they were all back at the hotel after a show partying it up. You know... the usual. And Gene decided to check on the kids from Rush and see how they were doing. So he goes down the hall and knocks on their door and all 3 of them are in the room, sitting quietly, reading books. And the way Gene tells it you can hear the respect he has for them. He says "What kind of band is Rush? It's Rush."
This is always so fun to watch: How many bands are true friends with one another, even after nearly four decades together? Geddy and Alex have been best friends since they were 13 years old, and now they are 70 years old. To be bandmates at that high level of fame and still remain best friends through it all is exceedingly rare. Back when Neil joined the band in 1974, he fit right in with them, and you can really see that here, with the way all three of them interact: Geddy said that in Neil, they found a 'fellow traveler.' Recently, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Alex said that he and Geddy have been privately playing Rush songs together again, just to keep their skill levels up. He has said that he has no desire to tour or to re-form the band. The give and take in their friendship is a rare and beautiful thing: Alex said that if Geddy wanted to go on the road, Alex might agree because he loves Geddy and wants to make him happy. Yet, if that happened, Geddy would also know Alex would be unhappy. So, it strikes me that their friendship is very intuitive and that they respect one another deeply. For a future reaction, I suggest checking out the live version of Freewill from Snakes and Arrows tour.
They're the best of friends and it's the reason for their longevity. You simply must watch the 2013 Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame induction. Alex gives THE best acceptance speech of all time by anyone ever, you won't regret it!
@@kingbrutusxxvi A big part of that is from the onset of the band when they decided to divide the money equally between all three members which was wise. In that way they were able to avoid the pitfalls and endless bickering about who gets what that tears other great bands apart. They’re also really good guys with a lack of ego trips and ‘major’ substance abuse issues.
So lovely to hear Neil laugh! This was after Neil had moved to California and had married his second wife Carrie. After all the pain he had gone through losing his first daughter and then his first wife. 💔 It is so unfortunate thst he never got to spend much time with his second family before he developed cancer. Their nicknames Geddy Dirk Neil Pratt Alex Lersxt Both Geddy and Alex have wine cellars and are quite knowledgeable about it. Have you seen their RRHOF induction? David Grohl and Taylor Hawkins inducted them and it was pretty funny then their speeches. Alex of course was hilarious! Glad you are feeling better. One of the Very Best things Rush (Rash) had was their fantastic humor !! 😆 In many of their great Live DVDs there are always Comedy "Skits" projected on the big screen behind band for the audience to see and laugh to during the concert 👍 😸
You may or may not know that this dinner happened after the Band took a five-year break after the tragedy in Neil's life. It breaks my heart what happened and it's nice to see them come together with such love and respect to talk about moving forward.
the laughter between these guys is always awesome. Alex is just being his usual funny self. Geddy is a little serious sometimes and Alex lightens him up. Neil, you can tell, is always smart and cracking up at Alex. He is an introvert but he is so relaxed around them that his personality just comes out. Geddy and Alex actually live close to each other. at this time Neil was living down in LA. They were talking about the Clockwork Angels tour and then the R40 tour at this dinner. awesome reaction.
Neil is a brain. His entire body is made of brain material. Geddy is no slouch either so those two connect on a very high intellectual level. However, Alex is a cut up and probably the only person on the planet that could pull Neil out of his shell.
I've watched this countless times and it never gets boring, Geddy. I would've killed to be the fly on the wall in that room. Their love for each other itself shows they are NOT boring.
Hope you feel better soon! For another glimpse into their personalities, have a look at their acceptance speeches when they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
Yeah… you CANNOT fake chemistry like that. I’ve really enjoyed watching you truly click with the guys. It’s a love affair that will last a lifetime. I’m not just whistling Dixie. 😂
As you can probably tell, Alex is the clown and jokester of the group, Neil is the well read philosopher, and it is easy to understand why he wrote almost all of the lyrics, and Geddy is the technical perfectionist. Of course, all three of them shared these same qualities to some extent, which made their chemistry absolutely perfect for the 40 plus years of musical greatness from these three virtuosos. And of course, they remained best of friends the whole time. They truly were one of the most unique and greatest bands of all time.
The dreaded "knock on the door" i get it 😂 This was entertaining. I first saw them in 1979. They opened by playing "2112" in its entirety. Then ... Geddy says "Good Evening Mobile, how are you" 😂 Magical memory for sure. Thanks for sharing this. Not sure if I've ever seen it.
I saw this many years ago and completely forgot about it. Thank you for bringing back this wonderful memory. I am so sorry that you were never able to see them perform in person. It was always like a family reunion for me. I have been a fan of theirs since I first heard their music back in the mid to later 70s. They will ever be fantastic.
I recall an interview with Gene Simmons (Rush opened for Kiss on tour) and Gene said he'd go to their room after a show and say 'let's go party' and all three of them were sitting back reading a book................
Most of the times before performing Neil would be in another room with his electronic drum set getting warmed up and would be left alone, while Alex and Geddy would be signing autographs and talking with people. When I met them I was trying to have a conversation with Neil but Alex kept interrupting asking me what song I liked the best and Teddy would say oh you must like him better, I looked at all three of them and said Who's on First, What's on Second and I don't know whose on Third, they said that's right and their humor came out from all of them. That was the best time
"Jonata Pinot Noir" Is about $100 a bottle... A rich, big-boned Pinot Noir with alluring scents of ripe black cherry liquor and a hint of oak char. Full-bodied darker fruits enhanced by savory herbs and oak with a grilled fruit and soy accent. Nicely balanced with a lovely smooth velvety texture and enough acidity to bring the fruit into focus. The aromatic finish lingers on and on. An expensive bottle of wine, but one that really delivers the goods.
Wine definitely helps. Im an Omniverte. Thats a hard core introvert that has extrovert tendencies. A little wine and I'm the life of the party, any other time I can be found in a book, in the dark or by the fire pit listing to Rush.
They are the richest 'regular guys' you will ever see. They are normal fellas that have money and have never changed who they are. They were always friends.
You have to know - they are (were) so down to earth - John Rutsey was an animal though.. met them in Canada back before Neil.. (Who is a super intelligent guy) Love that you shared this.. I saw this when it came out...
Geddy knows a shit ton about wines. It is well known. Plus he has the guiness book of world records of largest monacle collection. I’m NOT MAKING THAT UP!!!!!!! Plus his baseball memorabilia collection is exquisite
They're such great friends. Their manager also managed Van Halen & drew a contrast with that band by saying the members of VH couldn't even stand to be in same room. Hope you're feeling better!
Neil’s second wife apparently was a big part of Neil becoming more personable and open in the latter years and it was great to see him so happy, also as a new father. Considering what he went through he definitely deserved it which made it all the more tragic with the circumstances of his passing. RIP Neil, there will never be another quite like him.

Good news is that Geddy and Alex are playing again, although they did say they sounded like a bad tribute band at first, the bad news is that they are not looking at doing anything seriously aside from the odd cameo performance like the other week billed as L+L they appeared at the Gordon Lightfoot Tribute.
Think about how amazing it is that Alex and Geddy went to elementary school together in 5th grade, started playing instruments and then met Neil when he was 17. Since then basically been best friends throughout... all the crap of touring, and then the fame and the fortune. They all got married young and had kids young and all the stuff they dealt with and you can tell that they still are best of friends... it's just so amazing.
