Absolutely. When he participated in the Burnin' for Buddy tribute, Neil found himself out of his element, and realized he still had a lot to learn. Steve Smith recommended Freddie Gruber, and it was back to the drawing board for him. Sometimes you need a kick in the arse to keep from getting complacent. I recently did some online lessons from Dave Weckl to "sharpen my instrument" (after having played drums for 40 years) and am so glad I did. Weckl actually studied with Gruber himself, and taught some of his methods in his course.
Anything from that show… they were on fire that night. I posted the link to 2112 on here (and have several other time over the past couple of weeks) so Red, there’s no excuse. Just do it…😂
All that.....in the middle of a 3 hr show. And pay attention to the jazz ending, where he pays tribute to some of the legends of drumming....Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. They were a big influence on Neil, and you can hear a lot of jazz influences in Rush too. As always, RIP to "The Professor".
Neil Peart, the sound and face of excellence. There aren't enough words to describe this guy. He was as rounded an individual as anybody could ask. Well read, inquisitive mind coupled with his humility and grace. In spite of the tragedy and loss he endured he remained standing and still able to let the music flow. His interviews on various tv shows over the years allowed fans a small window into this great man. I'm sure I'm not the only one who still has a hard time watching him play without feeling his loss. Damn. Rest In Peace Professor. We all miss you.
Back in the day I went to a rush concert during the hemispheres tour. It was general admission Arena seating with seats around the outside and standing on the floor. I remember walking to all corners of the arena and watching them from every angle near and far. I ended up on the floor about 10 ft from the stage for the finale...2112 with a drum solo... it was so amazing to see them live I was blown away. After it ended I stood for about 20 minutes just basking in the ambience of the moment. The drum Tech came out picked up a stick Neil had dropped during his solo and threw it right to me... I didn't move it hit me right in the chest LOL... I quickly picked it up put it in my pocket and kept it for about 20 years. My son became a drummer so I gave it to him as far as I know he still has it❤ RIP Neal 😢
Rush Hemispheres was the second concert I ever attended. I was 13 and it left a big impression on my young mind. Being Canadian, I was fortunate enough to see them several more times as they played in my small city every year or two.
Dear Neighbour, I think you are finally ready to take in the whole 21 minutes of "2112" if you are like me this will move you when you hear Geddy sing two distinct characters throughout the song. My favorite is the "Discovery" section where Geddy's voice is amazing and his bass line is so rhythmic and beautiful. Do the illustrated video from their official website for the best effect.
I grew up in Toronto where Rush is from. I saw the countless times and was always blown away. We lost a legend when Neil Peart passed away. He was always so approachable on the streets willing to talk. RIP Neil.
I knew once you were nearing the xylophone stage in the solo where you were going to go from there. Neil solos progress over the years and they never disappoint. I'm from the Detroit area and Toronto was just across the river, many Rush concerts and uncounted hours spent listening to their whole catalog which is quite large, does something to you, as you are finding. Their whole musical journey is literally right up there with the pyramids and Stonehenge. You should really go after “Closer to the Heart” and “Losing It” if you haven't already. You'll be changed forever if you haven't already been by now.
Great review ! Especially when trying to comment on Neil's playing because there are so superlatives you can use , he was probably the most rounded drummer - not to mention his composing & song writing . To really see this he plays jazz at a Buddy Rich's tribute doing an uptempo version of "Cottontail" it's impressive (even Buddy's band were a bit surprised )
The very last part of this solo was also the last part of Buddy Rich's "One O'Clock Jump", which is why he's playing along with a prerecorded big band for that section...it's meant as a tribute to one of HIS favorite drummers.
I'm glad to see you doing a reaction of this video. His solos are beyond phenomenal. The Frankfurt one is my favorite. Especially the part starting at the 6:48 time index. If you watch that specific part at youtube's slowest speed, his sticks are still just a blur. Yes, even at the slowest playback speed, his stick are still a blur!!
You're one of the rare reviewers who acknowledge his perfect rhythm footwork while he's free forming with his arms 🩵 Yes, he is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME !!! Great reaction!!!
Neil was an innovator who influenced countless others to follow the blueprint that he wrote. He really changed the genre and expanded what was possible in progressive rock drumming in terms of not just his chops, but his entire approach to the instrument
The true beauty of his playing, beyond his technique, and his solos being full-blown compositions in and of themselves; was his utter lack of complacency. No matter how many accolades he received in his life, he was always looking to learn more and expand upon his skill set. So much so that 20 years into being the greatest rock drummer even at that time, he decided to seek out a teacher who completely broke down his playing style and rebuilt it to an even better, and stronger. Whereas most anyone else would've likely just assumed that they'd arrived and could coast from there. Neil never did, well except perhaps when he decided to retire from playing, to focus on his family. R.I.P. Professor, and thank you for all the amazing songs/memories.
Thank you for your reaction. I got a little teary eyed. I can never forget how great the professor was. There are a lot of great drummers, but none of them could ever do what Neil Peart did.
All of his technical ability aside, he was a really creative drummer. The only man who could have been Rush's drummer, and have Rush be what it was. RIP! Thanks for the continuing Rush reactions, Red!
tears streaming watching you react to the guy that meant so much to me in my 58 years on this planet and so many others. Truly a one off and we miss him so much.
That's great, but I wish more would do the Malignant Narcissism live solo, too. It's just so different, in many respects. I find it fascinating, and shows how Neil was never stuck in a rut, never afraid to experiment, and always pushed for more, in my opinion.
The section of the solo beginning at 5:50 slowly veers off the rails musically because it's a demonstration of a true polyrhythm. Playing two completely different tempos at the same time. It sounds a bit weird if you don't understand what he's doing, but drum teachers recognize it and get their minds blown at how effortlessly Neil pulls it off.
Ok, have a bad habit of commenting before the video is over. RUSH! You asked and I didn’t see it on your playlist, so I’m going to go ahead and tell you their best song IMO. It’s easily one of their top ten songs that most RUSH fans would agree on. Are you ready for a complex, beautiful, instrumental, masterpiece? LA VILLA STRANGIATO. It’s about some house in Italy….😆 They admitted that they were playing very ambitiously and at their musically most challenging on this song. Their best song.
Breaks for the guitarists are great, aren't they? It gives us time to enjoy the drums!! lol. Neil makes the sound flow so smoothly that it doesn't even sound like he's moving as diverse as he is. Incredible! Drummers of the past, such as Gene Kruppa, Buddy Rich and many others can't hold a candle to Neil. He IS the professor!
I saw Rush during the Roll the Bones tour. At that time, Neil's drum set was half standard drums and half electronic drums. The electronic drums were tied to the laser light show. When he did his drum solo and started playing the electronic drums the light show went with it. It was the most incredible thing to see and hear - sensory overload. He is definitely missed!
It’s fascinating how music restructures our brains to enhance our perceptions and open the door to a bigger platform of understanding. Rush used to put out a live album every couple of years and each live album had a drum solo. Since the first one, Neil has carried over parts of the solo to the next one. This solo had parts of all the solos before. The professor teaching on multiple levels even after he’s gone. I like your videos. ✌️😉💕
Neil wrote this song, Malignant Narcissism, for the 1997-1998 tour. They called the tour An Evening With Rush! No opening act. I was there to see it! I Love the sheer Delight of Your reaction, R.H.N.! Keep up the great work! ❤❤❤
“He’s blurry again” May be the best thing I have heard in a long time. What did joy it is to watch you discover this band and journey down the rabbit hole. You may want to check out the medley from exit stage left of By-Tor, In the End, in 2112 Finale.
I was fortunate enough to have watched him develop this solo for decades in concert. They always moved forward. Now you know. It is a legitimate RUSH renaissance these days.
Kinda completely speaks for itself, don't it!?! Please continue to just be you on these journeys, 'cause that's what I enjoy and appreciate! Cheers rl 🤘👹🤘
At the end, I thought you were going to break into tears 🥲 I was ready to join you. We lost a true master, but not before he was finished with his work. Thank the universe he left us so much to remember him by 🤘❤😢
Nice to see you got to this one. There's a reason so many of us think of him as the GOAT. He was truly brilliant, too. In addition to being a Hall of Fame Drummer, he was also a world class lyricist and bestselling author. If you want to get to know him, pick up his book "Ghost Rider." He wrote it while fighting to recover from the loss of his daughter (car accident) and his wife (cancer) in 1997-98. Really courageous man. Huge, Huge loss!! He left a giant hole in the world when he passed. Don't worry about getting blocked with Rush. They don't do copyright complaints. They've said as much in past interviews. Just another one of the things that puts Rush in a class unto themselves. I know I already gave you my list, so have a ball. ☺
Imagine seeing THAT in person. LIVE! Feeling it in your chest. I wanted to take that home with me. I can't explain it other than damn near spiritual. Loved your reaction by the way. You're my newest reaction treasure
You have just witnessed IMO the best rock percussionist ever. A solo crafted, thoughtfully, melodic, technical, unique and he used every drum, cymbal, pad, and accessories. And he wrote the lyrics!! RIP Neil Peart. I miss you so much.
Truly in a class of his own - "your favourite drummer's favourite drummer." One of my personal favourite Rush songs is "The Pass", from the album "Presto". I've worked with hundreds of youth over the past forty years, and unfortunately a few of them had taken their own lives for reasons only they could understand, so this song always tugs at me when I hear it. The self-titled song from that album is great too. Also, check out one of Rush's last songs - "The Garden" to see them at the culmination of their 40-year career, and a bit of a tribute to their fans and to themselves - especially Neil.
He's your favorite drummers, favorite drummer ... he is the GOAT .. period. There's Buddy Rich, and then there's Neil Peart. Neil was Buddy on yet another level. Both men, in my view, absolutely defined percussion instrumental play. Neil brought it all to a whole other level. You need to watch Neil playing a tribute to Buddy Rich. It is simply mind blowing. I am so fortunate in my life to have been blessed with growing up and living through the era of RUSH. They have been a major part of my entire life, and they have no idea how much they have enriched my life. I can't even imagine having lived without them. They got me through a whole lot of very rough times. I have also been blessed to have been able to experience them live 18 times. I have been blessed to have been able to experience Alex, Geddy masterful play and Neil's fantastic percussion solo play several times. Priceless! RIP Neil Peart, we miss you!!!
I saw Rush live back in the days of the Hemispheres tour...it was General Admission Arena seating with seats around the outside and an open floor... I walked around through most of the show getting different angles and perspectives but then ended up on the floor about 10 ft from the stage for the finale...2112... part of that was a drum solo. During the solo Neil threw a drumstick in the air but then missed it when it came down, then proceeded to finish his solo and the rest of the set. I was stunned by how good they were to see live. I was so blown away that I just stood there for about 20 minutes enjoying the ambience of the moment while everyone else was leaving. The drum Tech came out and picked up the Fallen drumstick threw it right to me. I didn't even move and it me right in the chest lol I quickly picked it up and stuck it in my pocket and kept it for probably 20 years. My youngest son started playing the drums so I gave it to him as far as I know he still has it ❤ Rip Neil😢
Ever see Terry Bozzio live? His entire SHOW is a series of drum/percussion pieces. He takes his 47 piece drum kit and plays it like a giant percussion instrument.
@@toddfrank3344 Never heard of him or her. I don't know why people enter conversations and bring up people that nobody else are talking about. Surely if who you are talking about is that good there must be places where people are talking about him/her...
I had tears in my eyes watching that video with you. I miss that man so much. It’s amazing to even think of how many people he inspired to pick up a pair of drumsticks. Myself included. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I got to see him perform over a dozen times over the years.
❤. When have you heard a drum solo that makes you wish it was longer? Truly the GOAT. Been a while since I listened to that. Thanks for your enthusiasm!
There's that beautiful redheaded lady. Hi! Being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist myself, Neal was one of my favorite drummers. As a matter of fact he's my 2nd favorite. And my 1st favorite drummer is the same as Neal Peart's favorite drummer, who happens to be the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich. Since you like drumming, you should also watch Buddy Rich. His one video called "Impossible drum solo" is very good. And another up and coming great drummer is El Estepario Siberiano. He even does some crazy one handed drumming, which is incredible. Great reaction you did. ❤❤❤❤🤩💥👍🎉😊
Thank you so very much for enjoying and appreciating The Professor. The man is deeply missed, to say the least. Love your channel, and I look forward to following you on your rabbit hole journey known as Rush :)
I got to comment, again. 3 things. 1. He switched his grip mid way through solo…just because he can 2. His tribute to Buddy Rich and the big band era. Pure class 3. He threw his stick up to the rafters, catches it in perfect rhythm and bows his head with stick pointing to the sky to end. Like a FREAKING BOSS!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Seen them in concert over a dozen times in my life and every time I watched "the professor" it was like the world stopped and it was just him. He's the reason I picked up the sticks and started playing once upon a time. I cried for almost 2 days when he passed. Thank you for your reactions with him and the band!🙏💋🌹🎼
I live in Las Vegas and we have Freemont Street here (a huge light and sound canopy over a casino lined street basically) and they have paid tribute with some really cool light and sound shows to a few stars after they died...Prince, David Bowie, Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson to name a few....only 1 drummer....Neil....those are some pretty big names to be up there with....but in my eyes no one was bigger than Neil....my biggest "loss" in the rock/music world....saw them 11 glorious times live....I took a couple friends to concerts who were somewhat reluctant to go and didnt like Rush....that changed after the concert ended .....every one of the shows was a jaw dropper.... so cool to watch you getting into Rush and Neil, like many of my friends did years/decades ago....
You said “ When he passed, we lost something real”… yes indeed! It’s 7/24 and when I him performs in this performance I still tear up. His drumming is phenomenal like no other & yet for me it’s the lyrics in their songs that put him on another level of awesomeness. For me I place him in the same category great song writing with John, Paul, George. Bob Dylan & his fellow Canadian- Neil Young.
Red, your intro chat (0:59)about getting to know Rush was truly excellent, and describes for most of us the process our brains went through as we became Rush fans in our own ways and different generations. Well said!
I wanted to say something silly like' "I loved your reaction". But just as words cant describe how Niel's drumming makes the soul feel, I can't describe how your reaction made my soul feel. It felt like the first time I saw this. You just brought it all back for me. Thank you!
Great reaction from you. Thanks! I can imagine the crowd standing there watching the big screen, with their mouthes wide open, occasionally blinking in disbelief.
Howdy neighbor! Once again, fabulous reaction. Seeing your smile and laughter and joy is helping me remember my (long ago) youth when I discovered Rush. Some ideas. I think you are ready to tackle 2112. The illustrated video is awesome, and is a must see. However, for something a little different, I LOVE the live version from the Capitol Theater in 1976. Yoooooung Rush, just entering their own in their 20s. I love it, 🎉😎😁
I’m really enjoying your journey into Rush! Looking forward to more of these and also some other groups. I know you’ll like the Nightwish and Dimash and other mainstream stuff but I’m really hoping you do Unleash the Archers - Awakening. They are also a progressive Canadian band. UTA is power metal and a young band. I REALLY REALLY hope you get to that soon. I think, due to the things you pick up in these Rush reactions, you’ll LOVE it! Keep up the energy and passion! Loving your channel!
I like that this man, the "professor" who so enjoyed studying the history and evolution of percussion and music, chose to incorporate and honor that history in his performances. Down the road there will be occasional gifted students of music who include Neal's contributions in their own celebratory performances of their forebears.
Loved this reaction, so wonderful to see someone so enthusiastic about a drum solo. RIP Neil, gone but never forgotten. Can I make a suggestion - if you liked this, have a look on youtube for Tool's performance of Pneuma, but the Danny Carey drum cam version. Danny is the heir apparent to Neil's crown as the best drummer out there. His limb independence is a thing to behold!
Rare earth was a no show in Columbus Ga.lots of people left and Rush wasn't well known at that time.I was close to the stage looking at an angle across Getty right into neils eyes when he turned my way and he noticed me getting off on his licks.I had a chick on my shoulders and it was like He ,I and the chick all connected and he totally had us plugged in to what he was doing and enjoyed us enjoying him. This was 1977 and i wasnt familiar with their music. What a synergistic powerful resonance that band had lifted me out of that building.RIP!

And the tail end a tribute to buddy rich, we were blessed the man put him on our planet.
I'm glad you finally got to see that. I've been drumming all my life and have two Rush tunes we covered perfectly on TH-cam. To me Neil isn't gone, Rush is in my blood, and I guess so is he.
lived almost all my life listening to this guy and his buddies - the "almost bit" being the first 14 yrs of my life in which i did not know about them, being 59 at writing this comment it is still hard to accept he is no long with us.
"When he passed, we lost something special" - You're correct indeed and nuff said... Thank you for your review!
He was still taking lessons at 60, that says a lot about the man.
From an even older jazz legend no less. Neil was super humble.
A continuous quest for excellence and improvement. That to me summarises his essence.
Absolutely. When he participated in the Burnin' for Buddy tribute, Neil found himself out of his element, and realized he still had a lot to learn. The Professor at his podium giving a master class demonstration. Rest easy, Neil. You will be remembered always
I was so blessed to have seen 53 Neil Peart solos in my life including the final show at the Forum
So glad you got to this one! He was the best. Next... please do Natural Science and 2112, live at Molson in Toronto, 1997. Both are top tier.
Anything from that show… they were on fire that night. I posted the link to 2112 on here (and have several other time over the past couple of weeks) so Red, there’s no excuse. Just do it…😂
Peart turned the drums into a melodic instrument. Ice the cake with being an amazing storyteller/writer/lyricist.
Neil Peart.
Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity.
RIP Professor.
My girlfriend in high school hated how much I loved them. Nice to see a lady appreciate the masterful band. Neil is the professor on the drum kit.

He left a giant hole in the world when he passed.
Don't worry about getting blocked with Rush. They don't do copyright complaints. They've said as much in past interviews. Just another one of the things that puts Rush in a class unto themselves. I know I already gave you my list, so have a ball. ☺
you love the warning Neil Peart is one of biggest Pau' models and he's one of the 3 best drummers of all time
Imagine seeing THAT in person. LIVE! Feeling it in your chest. I wanted to take that home with me. I can't explain it other than damn near spiritual. Loved your reaction by the way. You're my newest reaction treasure
I saw this live was amazing. Everyone has their favourite superhero Batman Superman Neil was my superhero growing up.
It's so great to see new fans come to this band. I've been a fan since 1977
You were more observant about the intricacies of what's happening here than many professional musicians with reaction channels. Love your reactions!
🤯 Thank you!
That's a BEAUTIFUL song. You can feel their pain in it. One of my faves.
One of the best percussionists to have ever lived!! Neil is in the top three all time!!
Agreed
The discipline.
Your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer 🙏🏼✌🏻
Neil’s drum solos aren’t just drum solos. They are actual songs themselves.
amazing! who does that????
@@willfromyadkinville Neil. Neil does that 😉
I saw Rush live back in the days of the Hemispheres tour...it was General Admission Arena seating with seats around the outside and an open floor... I didn't even move and it me right in the chest lol
I quickly picked it up and stuck it in my pocket and kept it for probably 20 years. My youngest son started playing the drums so I gave it to him as far as I know he still has it ❤
Rip Neil😢
3 things.
1. He switched his grip mid way through solo…just because he can
2. His tribute to Buddy Rich and the big band era. Pure class
Thank you for your reactions with him and the band!🙏💋🌹🎼
this never gets old. mind boggling.
Had the pleasure of seeing him do this 10 times. Neil is the best of the best... Love your reactions of rush. ❤
Thank you for the passion you show in enjoying Rush . With this drum solo your eyes spoke a thousand words ❤❤❤
Thank you for checking that out and appreciating it!! - We miss him big time! Please check out Rush - Mission (Live in Birmingham,1988) ...Cheers!
The way you described him was the same way Neil described Buddy Rich. Neil would blush to hear this from you, in his truly humble self. 😌
Things I'll never hear Red say #5 ....
"That's amazing "
Thanks again Rush ...
You are so in sink with these guys.love it and love your reactions.
Great reaction to a true legend and beyond great drummer.. "The Professor!" Rest in Peace
You said “ When he passed, we lost something real”… yes indeed! It’s 7/24 and when I him performs in this performance I still tear up. His drumming is phenomenal like no other & yet for me it’s the lyrics in their songs that put him on another level of awesomeness. For me I
place him in the same category great song writing with John, Paul, George. Bob Dylan & his fellow
Canadian- Neil Young.
Red, your intro chat (0:59)about getting to know Rush was truly excellent, and describes for most of us the process our brains went through as we became Rush fans in our own ways and different generations. Well said!
Oh, good. I’m glad that made sense and connected!
There will never be another....RIP, Mr. Peart. ✌🙏
I, again, recommend The Trees to react to.
Malignant Narcissism/ De Slagwerker is a MUST see live Snakes and Arrows Tour!❤🇨🇦
Saw Rush live 3 times and lemme tell you, they were LOUD! Every blast of The Professor's double bass drums hit you right in the gut!
I love it, 🎉😎😁
What comes to mind is thunder. Unbelievable. Best ever.
I've watched that performance many times and am always amazed. The best part is seeing the open mouth shock of folks watching it for the first time!!
That my friends is the GOAT.
That is otherworldly percussion! Never heard of him but glad I’m here! Thank you!
Neil is your favorite drummers favorite drummer. RIPeace paradise and power my hero!!!
Great Drummer and Lyric writer
I'm glad you finally got to see that. I've been drumming all my life and have two Rush tunes we covered perfectly on TH-cam. To me Neil isn't gone, Rush is in my blood, and I guess so is he.
lived almost all my life listening to this guy and his buddies - the "almost bit" being the first 14 yrs of my life in which i did not know about them, being 59 at writing this comment it is still hard to accept he is no long with us.
