I'm so glad you did this reaction vid! As a fan of metal and someone who loves a lot of the singers featured, I've always liked that compilation video and really wanted to see someone in the voice coaching/teaching world react to it, so I found this very insightful and interesting as well as fun!
I think there is one thing you can say about all those female metal singers: They can deliver on stage as well as in the studio because every single one of them really knows how to sing. They need no auto-tuning to sound good, those Ladies are true masters of their craft.
Yeah. Just realized that too. Mainly because if him too. Haha. He's so honest and give his points too. Nit just all praise and all and very informative.

I actually have no idea of what dear Sam is talking about most of the time because I haven’t got one musical bone in my body but somehow this is hands down one of my favourite TH-cam channels. Congrats on the headphone sponsors. Well Deserved! I meant to ask where your earbuds were last couple videos lol. I also only put one earbud in so I can hear other stuff. Will try these headsets out. Thank you for the great review
I will also say that the product plug was one of the most genuine, least abrasive I've ever seen on TH-cam. Most sponsored product reviews are so tacky, but Sam'd felt authentic and it really didn't take away from the video. Well done, Sam, your channel rules.
Alissa White-Gluz can switch between clean singing and screaming back and forth, she just doesn't get a chance to do so now that she's in Arch Enemy. Look up her previous band Agonist where she uses both clean vocals and screams. Panophobia is a really good song. Oh and if you haven't heard already, Tatiana Shmaylyuk of Jinjer is a prime example of a vocalist doing both cleans and screams amazingly well. Apparent in songs like Words of Wisdom and Pisces for example.
I remember reading she has a vocal range of four octaves. Would be interesting to see you analyze someone like her that switches between clear voice and growling. th-cam.com/video/bH6af8hU-NA/w-d-xo.html
I’m happy to see things really taking off for you, man. You’re such a genuine guy and I have enjoyed your take on so much, I’m actually really motivated to give those headphones a shot. Your reactions and appreciation for a variety of music gives me such a light feeling, and as corny as it sounds it always improves my mood on hard days to get a notification or just binge your stuff lately.
Expectations from a CD that was recorded while the singer was isolated from the world under great circumstances vs Reality while the singer is moving and walking around and not isolated from the world. People are ridiculous really.
You know, Sam, I was really happy about your review of Anette (former Nightwish) because although I don't follow her career, I was pretty into Nightwish and thought she was a breath of fresh air to the band. And I felt sorry for her because many fans were upset about Tarja being removed from the band so they gave Anette the worst shit I've ever seen, and criticized her saying she didn't even sing well. As I don't sing I've always wanted to have a more professional opinion on this and it's nice to know, technically speaking, that she's as good as I believe she is. :) If that makes any sense haha
I always felt like on live shows she seemed a little out of place due to her clothing style and stage presence that back in the day did not fit into the ethereal image they created for Tarja and neither into what a heavy metal vocalist usually dresses and acts on stage, so she probably didn't always fit on a visual side, but when it comes to what really matters which is the MUSIC then she was actually a smart addition to the band since her contemporary singing style and brighter tone allowed the band to explore different stuff on their songwriting. I love Tarja but I don't think she would do any justice to songs like Slow Love Slow, Scaretale or Floor's Tribal and Yours is an Empty Hope.
I was so happy to see all 3 Nightwish ladies on this clip! I just wish the person who made the video be used had used a different song choice or clip for Floor, her voice is so versatile. But either way I was excited to see Sam watch their performances 😊 Thanks for making me smile today!
Jinjer is a total different metal and purpose, you are entering the power metal zone whereas Sharon den Adele has her home in the symphonic metal which is a completely different genre, you cannot even really compare them as they are totally different.
@@gliscor9892 chill... This comment was not for Honey. Sadly comment function on my mobile is total crap so I obviously couldn't comment the vid directly. Plus: why can't I recommend another great female voice in metal genre? Perhaps somebody enjoys the variety in metal just as I do.
Nine nono just saying it seemed like you tried to compare both bands, I listen to jinger and within temptation and adore both, I just expressed my opinion
I'm so glad you did this!! Alissa White-Gluz actually is one of the few female metal vocalists that does go between her growls and her very pretty clean voice in the same song. Floor Jansen and Marcela Bovio can do it too 😊
@@infinite_ammo I thought about Jinjer, but I've never heard them live so I didn't feel as comfortable mentioning them as I did with the others. Tatiana is a badass, though.
I totally understand why you say she (Tatiana) can, becuz she does it very well, live too. However Vicky from the Agonist does growls and screams, and clean vocals and the variety is just perfect even live @ Ben B
I'm glad you got sponsors. Binged all of your reacts yesterday and fell in love with the channel. You seem like the kindest, sweetest and softest person. You deserve all of the success you're getting.
You are amazing! So happy you got a sponsorship! Your personality and demeanor with which you critique singing actually helped me gather the courage to take my first voice lesson last week. My sister was a soprano in choir and I could never keep up with her because (as my voice teacher confirmed) I'm an alto. I didn't think I could sing if I wasn't a mezzo or soprano so I gave up. But you made me want to try and it turns out, I sing on pitch and just (obviously) need to work on my technique. Thank you! Keep up the great work.
I concur! Im in no way a vocalist, except in the car n shower, but Im learning soooo much! Really interesting stuff! Also, Im a metalhead so its neat to see the critiques!
I only took voice for one semester, but I feel like a large part of "learning to sing" is about embracing what makes your voice special and then picking the right songs to flatter your unique instrument. Amy Winehouse and Adele wouldn't have gotten anywhere if they had spent their whole lives wishing they sounded like Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey wouldn't have gotten anywhere if she beat herself up for not sounding like Aretha Franklin. You are special, your voice is special, and it's only going to get better as you practice.
@@annebutcher9488 That's what I'm trying to figure out as well. I can comfortably do G#2 to E5, but stylistically, I have no idea what would sound best with my voice. There are some things I have no interest in singing whatsoever and there are some things I've never even tried.
Now you're just asking for hate commends. This is one of the few songs that fit her vocal range. There are a lot of Nightwish songs that she cannot perform properly, even ones that were made during her era.
Anette Olzon is amazing, I love her singing. She's just one small step behind some others and that's why she doesn't get much credit, but she is amazing.
I really like your reactions, they allow people to understand more about the singers they admire and how they make those sounds. It is very constructive and awesome, thank you for doing it. :)
Please breakdown the NIghtwish performance at Wacken 2013 - Ghost Love Score. I'd be really interested to see you making a breakdown of their lead singer's singing. I love your explanations! Thumbs up!
Indeed. I really believe that this is one of the greatest recordings ever made. The song itself is very emotional and melodic already. And then Jansen adds her supreme voice and makes it just stellar. The build up to the outstanding final note is just fantastic. What a supreme singer she is. And her versatility is currently unmatched. The amazing thing is also, that her sister Irene is a proficient, yet inactive, singer as well. How fucking awesome it has to feel to be on that stage, after a 18 year long hard working career, perfecting your voice everyday, and SLAY this song like she did. What a moment of satisfaction, confidence and fulfilment.
Congrats on the sponsorship Sir! I'm surprised they didn't include Tatiana from Jinjer in this list. You should most definitely react to Jinjer! Incredible voice. "Pisces" or "I Speak Astronomy" would be excellent songs to review! Keep it up man.
They didn't include it because I think the video is pretty old, even the performances chosen are relatively old, but yes, Tatiana should definetly be included in this kind of videos if someone will ever make an updated version :)
Pretty interesting stuff. I wonder what you'd have to say about Weird Al. He isn't really known for his signing voice, but it strikes me that it might be rarely versatile, as he changes his voice to match the style of song he's singing. I'm also curious to hear what you'd have to say about Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes, who seems to be one of those lead singers who gets away without being a very good singer.
Yaaasss get dem coins with that sponsorship! Also I am so happy that there's a voice teacher out there that actually wants to take a look at metal singers as well as pop singers! As someone who enjoys both it is great to see the difference :) If you wanted to look into Nightwish a little bit more I would highly recommend looking at: Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (Wacken). We nightwish fans go crazy for Floor Jansen and the way she sings the song :) Plus Alissa White-Gluz actually does sing clean vocals as well! If you want to hear more of that look for 'The Antagonist' because that's the other band in which she does vocals!
Agonist will give you a good live impression. Panaphobia's a favorite. I think her best singing comes in the the duo with Kamelot in "Liar Liar." It gives a great impression of how she can do both. Then Pisces by Jinjer is a fantastic version too of a woman who excels at both cleans and growls.
Sam, I am so happy your channel is growing! Congratulations on your newest sponsorship!!! Your videos continue to be extremely informative without being condescending or abusive and unkind.
xEstherMVs Underrated? Some people don't like Andrea Ferro voice, someone don't like the band but honestly I've never heard anyone criticize Cristina's voice; it's considered one of the best in the world by everyone.
Sponsorship aside, the HD6XX is an awesome deal. They're basically HD650s with a 1/8" plug and different color. They retail for $350 or more, so the massdrop deal (when it's available! ) is unbeatable. They work much better with a dedicated headphone amp if you can
As an operatic soprano and metal fan, I find it exciting when classical style is used here. Metal can be operatic, so it is a natural fit. And I really enjoy your channel, btw.
Waiting with bated breath for Jinjer- Pisces (live sessions). The perfect song for you to see a clean transition into the guttural metal screams 🙌🏻 Tatiana is incredible 😭
I didn't want to throw my own suggestion out for this without searching the comment section to see if anyone else had... so glad to see someone else requesting it!
Nightwish! All three girls as well! Thank you for recognizing Annette, she got a lot of hate but I think she's a great singer. Also I think Tarja is not given a good representation here. Try listening to Phantom Of The Opera, studio and live End of an Era concert version. As for Floor, the song Energize Me with her previous band is awesome as well.
YES! I agree. Tarja Turunen was the original singer and it's ridiculous that people on here are saying Floor's version is better or great but it's just not. Nightwish, I'll give it to them they improved when they went from Anette Olzon to Floor Jansen in terms of singers but they held Floor back a lot on the album they last released. However when they went from Tarja Turunen to Anette Olzon I don't know where they found her or why they picked her but it's like they went from Celine Dion to Kelly Clarkson. Don't get me wrong Anette Olzon sounds great in her new band "The Dark Element" but she just didn't in Nightwish. I just love Tarja so much!
@GeekRedux The one in this video is Nemo. For shits and giggles, there's also a video of both Tarja and Floor singing Over the hills together here on yt. I will always like Anette. I did start listening to Nightwish when Tarja was still a part of them, but got into them with Dark Passion Play. Then again interests changed and I stopped listening to Nightwish so much. I had a recent binging of their videos just for nostalgia and started listening to stuff with Floor in it. I wish the end of the Ghost Love Score performance at Wacken 2013 was shown in this EvR video. Holy shit does she kill it there. They're all good and have their own unique style. The drama over who is 'better' is dumb and useless.
Annette was a great singer, sadly in the wrong place in the wrong time. I love her albums with Nightwish, and she does sound really good live in her own songs. But she doesn't sound as good in Tarja's era songs, and it's not even her fault, her vocal styles are completely different. It's very similar to what happened with Blaze on his time on Iron Maiden, and in both cases the way the fans reacted was pretty poor.
I think shes has more control in her voice to day, she's more experience. I don't say Sam is wrong, but I think a more recent video with her instead of an old could change a lot. Floor has develop her voice so much last 10 years its even in start of Nightwish and nightwish to day, you can see how her voice has changed for the better. She has a voice I only could dream about, but it has just become better from amazing voice to super amazing voice.
@@jackskellington6sic6 I also think it was good and she's talented even in the video he show, I don't disagree with Sam. I just think she's even more talented today, but it can be personal opinion because i love Floor's voice so much. But I do think Sam did a great job in his comments. It's just my personal opinion, that i think a new video would make her more justice.
@@nataljaflacksagova She's definitely more talented now. But I think that's mainly in her harsh vocals. So it would be interesting to see if she could do better on this one now. But unfortunately no more 😢

Omg pregnancy brain.. i kept reading “expectation” at the bottom of the clip as the song title and thought “dang all these songs have the same name” and then my idiot self realized what this video is called and it clicked and now i feel stupid 😂😅

@@Sigart no, but the Wacken 2013 version is from the DVD, so it's pro-mixed, outstanding sound quality. They released an audio only CD version of the concert as well.
I learn so much from your channel. I really enjoy how you don't say "Oh, this person sucks." Instead, you explain what they could improve on or change. I love your channel. 🙂
Ok, after checking this out i have one female metal singer that i think youd find interesting to hear. Her name is Tatiana, from the band Jinjer. I recommend checking out the live version of there song Pisces, and enjoy the ride.
I love Shakira and I will say that Shakira sings a thousand times better in Spanish. Her voice and singing changes a bit when she's singing in English.
Gotta love this video! You apparently didn't know most of the singers and yet came up with very smart and accurate observations. You said the transition between head and chest voice at Tarja's singing could be little smoother... Apparently she didn't use to let her chest voice come in at her lower notes at that time (2000s) and that's something she has been recently working on and sounds way better to me. Then you said about Floor Jansen sounding a little tired and as far as I know she was about to be diagnosed with burnout at the video you have reacted. I also love that fact Anette has been whom you praised most and we cannot forget how much hatred she got from part of Nightwish' fans when she replaced Tarja. And finally you apparently loved Sharon den Adel and I always heard she didn't use to have vocal trainings at that time.
Female metal singers seriously don't get enough credit. They are amazing.
Female metal Singer much better as male singer

I'm so glad you did this reaction vid! As a fan of metal and someone who loves a lot of the singers featured, I've always liked that compilation video and really wanted to see someone in the voice coaching/teaching world react to it, so I found this very insightful and interesting as well as fun!
I want a t-shirt saying "She's got really nice vowels".
I love this comment
MERCH
Hey, baby. I don't think we know each other, but I just want to tell you: you've got some really nice vowels.
I'd buy a shirt of Sam doping the Emperor's New Groove 'Pacha, JUST. RIGHT.' pose with the text "All About That Twang."
YES
even his sponsorship is so sincere! love all the jazz playoff shirts, he must be a season ticket holder
I think there is one thing you can say about all those female metal singers: They can deliver on stage as well as in the studio because every single one of them really knows how to sing. They need no auto-tuning to sound good, those Ladies are true masters of their craft.
Sam’s subscribers are the most polite on TH-cam. You guys are awesome 😎
Yeah. Just realized that too. Mainly because if him too. Haha. He's so honest and give his points too. Nit just all praise and all and very informative.
You too ♥️😊
No you!
I stumbled across his vids by accident and enjoyed them, but I stayed and subbed because this guy is just so friendly and polite. He’s like the Bob Ross of voice teachers. 😂👍
Beat the devil out of those vocal chords
I actually have no idea of what dear Sam is talking about most of the time because I haven’t got one musical bone in my body but somehow this is hands down one of my favourite TH-cam channels. Sam you are one of the loveliest people around and you deserve every wonderful thing coming your way. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Annie, I don’t either!!! Chest voice? Head voice? Thin vowels??? I don’t have a clue. I just love Sam. 😀

Same here. I've never learnt to sing but I like his videos. Maybe because he analyses many singers I like very much, and I like that he likes them. :D
I'm also supper excited you have a sponsor. Very much deserved!

I've seen and met Amy Lee several times and the reality is always amazing! Not to mention she's so sweet and personable!
Kayley Meredith she is super sweet I met her as well
Esp for an Oompa Loompa.
Do you know what that performances link is?
I've seen her live... she lip sync'd 85% of the show. Watch her live tv performances.... she's pitch, and her voice cracks.
@@ribman42 I was close enough to touch her both times I saw her live. There was definitely no lip syncing then and her voice was amazing!
Yay for the sponsorship! As someone who has been watching for a while now, it's great to see the recognition you deserve!

On the Album "will to Power" There is a Song Where She Sings clear. "reason to believe"
I would love to see you react to Jiner - Pisces, especially the live studio version. It really shows the possibilities and range of the female voice.
Also checkout her collaboration with Carnifex, she has both styles in the song she did with them!
Sometimes that is actually a disadvantage. Some live recordings supercede their studio counterparts - if it's a great singer.
@@martinhelgren from what I've noticed this seems more common with parts that are adjusted to be easier for the common listener to sing along to.

Ayreon is a brilliant example of LOADS of talented vocalists.
OMFG yessss!!! she is a freaking QUEEN!!!!
I just commented on this not too long ago, and love the fact that Sam Johnson is acknowledging the talent found in the realm of female metal singers!
Love it when you do rock/metal, it's one of my favorite genres.
And congrats on the sponsorship! You totally deserve it
You know, Sam, I was really happy about your review of Anette (former Nightwish) because although I don't follow her career, I was pretty into Nightwish and thought she was a breath of fresh air to the band.
She didn't really fit but that doesn't mean she can't sing. Her treatment was really bad tho
@@MarieJohanna760 No she totally fit. She just wasnt the best at singing Tarja songs but she totally fit during her two albums.
@@MarieJohanna760 Yes she did fit because Tuomas chose her. Tuomas IS Nightwish and she fit with his vision.
Thank you for doing more metal/rock . You deserve all your success.
I was so happy to see all 3 Nightwish ladies on this clip!
I just wish the person who made the video be used had used a different song choice or clip for Floor, her voice is so versatile.
But either way I was excited to see Sam watch their performances 😊
Thanks for making me smile today!
What I really like is that he acknowledge the talent and power of these three ladies unlike some Nightwish fans.
Right? I wish he listened to her recent live Nightwish performances, or Wacken 2012. Not an old song from ReVamp.
Although if he listened to her cover of "Alone" by Heart, I could deal with that ❤️
Give the people (and by the people I mean me) what we want: more metal! Uh, please. I'll just go ahead and leave this like to convince you.
Yes. More metal.
Yes more metal and alternative music
Agreed
Yes please! 🤘

Within Temptation is awesome and I love Sharon Den Adels vocals.
Did you heard of Jinjer before? She's super great! Watch them :D

Floor Jansen and Marcela Bovio can do it too 😊
Listen to Jinjer
I just requested jinjer too. I think Tatiana has done better than any female in the game
Lzzy Hale too.
I would like a dedicated video of Nightwish vocalists. Tarja, Anette, and Floor.

She's got angel's/fairy voice, love her so much 😻
You are amazing!
More metal singers please! Love the channel
Congratulations on the sponsorship. Do you think you can do a video for the band Jinjer with their song Pisces? The live studio version please.

Yas yas yas! Or any of their work really. Just amazing.

Finally someone giving Anette some credit!
Yes I agree
Now you're just asking for hate commends. This is one of the few songs that fit her vocal range. There are a lot of Nightwish songs that she cannot perform properly, even ones that were made during her era.
Refke van Lavieren why would he/she get hate "commends" (it's comments not commends) for being glad that someone's finally giving Anette credit?
I think its her best live version i wonder how much time spend to find it haha
Anette Olzon is amazing, I love her singing. She's just one small step behind some others and that's why she doesn't get much credit, but she is amazing.
I really like your reactions, they allow people to understand more about the singers they admire and how they make those sounds. It is very constructive and awesome, thank you for doing it. :)
I love this channel and this community. The comment section is so healthy
Congratulations on the sponsorship!!! So well deserved!
Please breakdown the NIghtwish performance at Wacken 2013 - Ghost Love Score.
I'd be really interested to see you making a breakdown of their lead singer's singing.
I love your explanations! Thumbs up!
Floor Jansen touched the sky that night,
@@Koronel79 I agree with you so much!
Here to bump this up. A song destined for reactions
Still waiting!!
Entertainment and educational content. I dont know why but I love this
Congrats on the sponsorship Sir!
Yes please do Pisces live session reaction! Everybody has done it! Guaranteed to blow your mind
Honestly with how polarizing the lead changes have been, a full video on the 3 Nightwish singers and the strengths/weaknesses of Annette/Tarja/Floor
Metal ladies are true singing goddesses 99.9999% of the time!!!!!
He's awesome.
I totally agree. He is fantastic and so creative.
Violent femmes for sure!!!!
There's just one The Agonist song, that I like: "Thank You, Pain". The variation of the vocals match the lyrics so well (accuser/defendant)!
@@Daniel-zy3kl oh yeah I love me some Kamelot!
That Wacken 2013 Ghost Love Score performance was damn incredible! I second that suggestion.

@Zayne simard moore I got into them by listening & playing “Our Truth” on Guitar Hero World Tour. It came out before “Spellbound.”
Sponsorship aside, the HD6XX is an awesome deal. They're basically HD650s with a 1/8" plug and different color. They retail for $350 or more, so the massdrop deal (when it's available! ) is unbeatable. They work much better with a dedicated headphone amp if you can
one thing i find amazing about Sharon Den Adel is she completely self-taught
Right? I don't know anything about technique, but she's incredible both in studio and live!
I actually didn’t know that, or I completely forgot, which can be very likely as well 😂
Same about Amy Lee
As an operatic soprano and metal fan, I find it exciting when classical style is used here. Metal can be operatic, so it is a natural fit. And I really enjoy your channel, btw.
Thanks for talking about Anette performance, there's a lot of hate against her, and i think she is a good singer
Waiting with bated breath for Jinjer- Pisces (live sessions). The perfect song for you to see a clean transition into the guttural metal screams 🙌🏻

Oh I remember when I discovered that Ukraining gem years ago. Great band
I just looked it up because I was curious... MIND. BLOWN.
I've never heard of Tarja Turunen or Nightwish until now, and I'm trying to find the full videos for this song. What song is it?
Thanks for the info--I will definitely be checking out more of their stuff.
Floor Jansen is also a voice teacher. I wonder what would be her reaction to his reaction to her singing...
@@nataljaflacksagova Actually because if that specific Performance and what it entailed it was a am amazing video for showing exceptional talent

It's just my personal opinion, that i think a new video would make her more justice.

I have been asking Tarja reaction and you finally make it, my life is complete
Oh female metal singers Tatiana Shmaylyuk from Jinjer and song Pisces ;)
yeeees! JUST posted a comment about this. Amazing
