Yup. I love to sing, when I listen to music I feel very deep stuff and I wanna shout it at the top of my lungs, make everyone feel what I'm feeling. I am TERRIBLE at singing, and all that people feel is ear pain. So I try to go to isolated spaces in order to not make people suffer, but I still sing my heart out, it's an actual emotional outlet, and I love it so much.
He's very honest, yet always positive and always offering advice to better someone's performance. Simon Cowell on the other hand is just cruel while offering no corrective input or tools to help. I hope these people found help and are using their talents in some personally fulfilling capacity.
There is a new paradigm that is gaining momentum in our society. We are entering an age where Sams approach is becoming appreciated more and more. There is a balance, of course, between the differing forces, but we only need a tiny tiny dash of the simon cowell approach, in very specific circumstances, as compared to the much greater need for Sam's approach, which should be the default. It feels really nice to watch and listen to Sam, and also to watch his voice reach more and more people. These things are evidence that the world is in the midst of a profound and beautiful shift. Very cool.
As a mental health therapist who stumbled across your videos, I just want you to know your empathy and kindness are amazing. You're obviously an amazing voice teacher, but you should consider a backup career as a therapist:)
i am currently cycling through a bunch of vocal teachers to try to find the right fit and my observations are that no matter how amazing a teacher looks on paper, if they lack empathy and kindness, they cannot make good vocal teachers. I think those qualities are necessary for all teachers, but singing especially is such a personal, vulnerable experience. Unlike an instrument, which is independent and apart from you, you have to manipulate your own body, and unlike with dancing, where you can physically see and manipulate the body part you want to correct, you can't externally manipulate your vocal chords. You can't see what you are doing wrong and you can sort of feel it but the way it feels is often really vague and indeterminate. So when you are told you are not singing well, you feel like you yourself are being criticized and denied, and you don't get that separateness that you can get with instruments or even, to a lesser extent, with dancing. (I know this is why a lot of singers say "the voice" and I think Sam does too rather than "your voice" and it may sound really floofy but it does help depersonalize). So anyway long-winded response but yes, I agree Sam is extremely kind and empathetic and it is crucial to why he is probably an amazing vocal coach (I only say probably since I haven't had him as a teacher).
Dude needs to host a show on how to be a better singer. Where the judges are actually voice instructors and the winner is the contestant who improved the most throughout the show. Everybody learns, everybody grows.
I just feel like Sam is so crazy passionate about music that whenever someone says that some people can't sing he goes into defense/motivational speaker mode. I wish most people with professional singing background and real knowledge on the subject would be this positive and kind to others who don't really know what they're doing, rather than just crushing people's dreams.
Breezy Baby, the thing is, though, singing is for everyone. Almost anyone can learn to sing pretty well ime. There’s a big difference between telling someone they need to get vocal training (the truth) versus ridiculing them.
@@Angela-vl8yw I hear you, I do. And I agree with you for the most part, except this isn't school or church. He was auditioning for a singing competition, and he wasn't there at all. (This next part is conjecture and my personal opinion) I don't think he has star quality and would be mistaken if he continued a path trying to be an "American idol." Again, my personal opinion, but I'm guessing I wouldn't be the only one to think so. Even if he could hold a note, there wasn't anything alluring in his voice. Maybe I'm wrong, I very well could be. But someone got him pumped up enough to think he could audition on a national level. Someone needed to bring him back down to earth. Not saying anything about him as a person. Just his idea of being a vocal talent. I agree, singing is for everyone; but, being an idol isn't.
Breezy Baby, I agree, not everyone is going to be a famous singer, but being a competent singer is within most people’s reach imo. That’s all. Also, I went and watched some interviews of Kelly Clarkson and she said that the auditioners had been vetted by the producers in this initial season. That implies that the producers let these untrained singers through specifically so the judges could ridicule them on camera, which is so terrible, like what.
@@Angela-vl8yw I agree. As someone who cannot sing but dances in my spare time instead, I say the same thing to anyone who wants to learn but is worried about not being any good. Will I ever be professional? God no! But I go to classes, I practice and I can get out on a dance floor and rock it (which is why my friends have brought it up in the first place). And anyone else can learn to do the same. Also, a dose of reality is that real auditions are not like American Idol. I know a few people who've been on auditioning panels and if they behaved like Simon Cowell does they'd be seen as pretty damn unprofessional.
They need a competition for people who want to learn to sing but need guidance. So all the judges would be vocal coaches, and they'd give constructive criticism to each contestant. No audition process involving the judges where these people are ridiculed, just a casting process off camera. And it should be called Anyone Can Sing. The winner would be who improves the most, and America could vote for them. I hate mocking and ridiculing people so much..
My mother used to ridicule me every time I sang along with the radio. She'd say things like "What did you do with the money I gave you?" When I'd say "What money?" She'd respond, "The money I gave you for singing lessons!" Like it was a big joke. I was convinced that I couldn't sing and so discouraged about my lack of ability that I joined band instead of choir. I learned to read music and was a very talented flute player. Music helped get me through high school. It wasn't until MUCH later in life that I realized that I actually have a nice voice. I've never been trained or taught about how to use it as an instrument, but I don't sound awful. Parents should encourage their children and not ridicule them. Build people up instead of destroying their confidence. Provide guidance, not criticism just for the sake of criticising.
It's a pathology in our society. I think it has to do with how much money has influenced music, so "the singer" is held above us in our heads -- same with the rest of music, really. It just shows how disconnected we are from the truth.
When our grandson , who lives with us, told us he wanted to sing at 12 we got him lessons. He had six years of lessons. Always encouraging him . 2 years of classical training, 3 years of choir and at 18 he is a fantastic singer. Going to major in music at college. Any kid who wants to sing needs and deserves support and all the help you can afford to give them.
It always makes me sad that these kind of parents exists because my mom was always so encouraging of any art form. I'm glad you broke free and discovered your talent.
The same thing happened to me, and it put me off ever sharing my voice with anyone. I still clam up when singing if I think a neighbor might hear me. It's pure shame. Sad that our parents were so inclined to put us down rather than lift us up.

I agree... I just found his channel a few days ago and I love his critique. Watching this is a real shame. I either can't BELIEVE the judges are being this harsh, or they don't have the technical expertise that Sam has and don't pick up on the mistakes that the contestants are making. @@AllenLendzion tbh before Sam's perspective I was laughing at Simon's burns. I enjoyed them. I said "don't they hear that?!!" Because I hear the murder that my voice is lol. So I didn't think it was possible to be bad and not know it. I'm bad.i know it. I don't know how to fix it. I know I could take classes but I don't because I just wanna sing around the house. And because I wouldn't embarrass myself singing for even a voice coach with my joke of a voice. I used to laugh now I sympathize. And I've only just found Sam What a kind guy.
Keep in mind, in game shows like this, a lot of times the singers are much better than they appear AND the judges aren't so rude irl. Often times, if somebody messes up, they'll be given another chance to perform to save face in front of the judges, but the previous recording is used in post. Other times, if they just decide they don't like somebody, they will technically alter a person's voice to sound worse. I auditioned for the next Star as a kid and didnt get in, but that's where I learned most of these talent shows have multiple levels before meeting the judges. (I still met the judges, Christina Agulara and 2 others completely by accident and they gave me a chance to sing a little and they complimented me but it was unofficial so I didnt get bumped up) but that's why usually to even MEET the judges you have to be good. However, some shows will PURPOSEFULLY choose bad singers to humiliate them. Yet most of the criticisms the judges say are written in later and they have the judges act it out when the singers aren't there. So while some of these people were using bad technique, some were also victims of circumstance. The best way to avoid humiliation is to take specialized training by a professional in advance (yes even of you're good) warm up well before your performance stay hydrated don't consume dairy that day (smooths your vocal chords, my mistake when I was at the next star) and dress to impress (on national TV "sex sells" so be sure to look good so they don't edit you to sound bad when you're a great singer just to have an extra person to exploit)
Doug Wheeler it really isn’t unique to voice teachers. This is what vocal pedagogy is about. Unless someone is studying vocal performance in college, they don’t think to seek out an actual voice teacher and rely on learning from someone who can maybe sing but really doesn’t know how to teach singing.

I am a professional singer but I wouldn't know where to start trying to teach someone... but I know that so I don't waste people's time. A lot of singers try to teach... but don't have the education to do so properly! I am also a softball pitcher and that I teach but I went to several camps/clinics/courses to learn how to teach pitching!

Maybe he doesn't have a sense of humor. Idol isn't about learning to sing, so being honest about how bad someone sucks is not always mean, these people need to know they are not singers who can be professionals..
Mandalay Gray why would it need to be a requirement? Their jobs are not to teach or develop but to assess talent. Simon Cowell has proven that he is the best talent scout in the world. I agree that the old Simon Cowell went too far in tearing people down (he has become more compassionate), but the job of a judge is not to provide instruction, advice, or direction. It is up to the people who go on these shows to seek it out for themselves. Some people want to be able to sing without committing the time and work that is required. They have a mental image that it just comes naturally, so they try to figure it out in their own. When a person is displaying a lack of technique, a lack of natural ability, then harsh criticism is sometimes necessary to convince them that they are no good singers on their own. To not provide the harsh criticism can lead that delusional person to believe that they can improve on their own and that they just need to keep trying. All of these shows have vocal coaches who work with the the singers once they have made it past the audition. The judges judges and the teachers teach. Those who have not already sought out the proper instruction for themselves (or just have a natural ability) are the ones for whom the time and effort is reserved. Why should these shows invest time and effort into people who have not yet done so (with proper vocal coaches) themselves? If a person truly cares about singing, they will seek it out for themselves.
Because their job isn't to create good singers. Their job is to find a singer they can sell to the media. That's why they're always attractive and already trained / naturally gifted

@F-zero91maru that's not the point. Anyone can sing. My partner loved singing but because he wasn't very good and was told he couldn't sing he stopped for a long time. I've encouraged him to sing (singing is great for you) and now he's audibly gotten better. Just because he got to practice. Everyone should sing!
I should probably just let this go, but it's bugging me so I'm going to say something. I've seen a few comments that say how the judges weren't being rude to laugh, they were just tired. They probably were tired, but that doesn't mean they weren't also rude. As someone who has auditioned a lot, seen a lot of auditions, been to a lot of performances I can tell you there is an etiquette to performances. These judges have been in the industry long enough to know that etiquette. They know it was rude. Simon even apologized as he was laughing. He wouldn't have apologized if he wasn't doing something wrong. They were rude because they thought it got them higher ratings. But look at how fast Sam's channel is growing. That proves you don't have to be rude to get an audience.
I'm so glad to see this comment! I've always thought that it was so rude for the judges to sit there and snort/giggle/outright laugh in someone's face as they were auditioning for them. Beyond being terribly unprofessional, it's also incredibly embarrassing and hurtful to the person auditioning. TV show or not, I've always found the rudeness of American Idol judges to be shameful, not funny.
Sadly the truth is that they are over the top hateful jerks because that is what people want to see. Ruined my day. EDIT: I watched a couple more and now the gears in my head are turning. There is more to this than what we see on the surface. There is a psychology to this and I'm going to go find what it is.

Honestly, I'm not even all that interested in this singing stuff. I think I'm mostly just here because it's refreshing listening to someone so unwaveringly kind and supportive.
Randy and Simon aren't singers. They know how to produce someone, but they don't know so much about singing technique as an actual singer (or a voice coach). I think that's why they laugh and are assholes to people. To the untrained ear, these people sound completely hopeless.
That is why I like Simon as a judge. Because he has admitted this and admits that he bases his decisions when judging everything (not just singing) on what he likes and finds entertaining. And American Idol was when he was at his rude height, so it makes me think that he was told by the producers to do that.
I completely agree. As a judge, he is super entertaining. And when it comes down to it, although their reactions are rude, they area accurate to what the average listener's reaction would also be. I mean, unless you know the technical side of music/singing, they just sound hilarious. As far as entertainment goes, they do their job. But I also agree with Sam, in a way, that insulting them doesn't do any good. But American Idol isn't about making people feel good. It's about entertaining an audience.
Simon is one of the producers... He isn't told anything by anyone. They are not interested in coaching someone to improve. They want someone who is already ready to be sold as a product to the pop market... They are assholes for sure but it's also true they're not there to give advice at the auditions but just judge what's presented to them. Simon or the other one have no idea about singing technique so they just go for someone who sings ok and has the looks to be a potential pop star.
Did you know that these people have to go through producer's auditions to appear for the actual auditions? These guys are given false hope and put in this position just for "entertainment purposes". I think that's messed up.
Yes! They pick these poor souls to advance to seeing the real judges. So they are made to believe that they are good enough to get to the TV audition phase when, in fact, they are put on TV to be ridiculed. I had to stop watching the show because it was so cruel to these people. Purposely putting these people into a situation to be laughed at and ridiculed is heartless.
As a speech-language pathologist, I am obsessed with your explanations. I’m right there with you with the anatomy, vowel shapes, etc. It’s like you’re speaking my language ...and I could listen to you speak that language for days. Also, you are amazingly kind. So special to find that in these times.
He's so compassionate and sincere, it honestly makes me want to cry. The world needs a lot more of this kind of empowerment rather than ridicule. It's beautiful to see and I hope to absorb just a fraction of his perspective from his videos.
Derek Charette i know what your saying but we all think that a lot of the time because that is the narrative we've been pushed by media to believe because it keeps us apathetic but most people have a normal level of emotional intelligence and the best thing about EQ is that it can be learnt. I mean look at Queer Eye! American Idol makes a shit tone of money pushing that negativity because its easy for them, it shouldn't be. That doesn't mean they couldn't make just as much with a smarter, kinder show that actually gives a shit about people and singing and lets face it, society. I totally agree that there are a lot of insecure people out there afraid and angry that haven't found strength yet in lifting themselves up by lifting others up too. Especially when society has had its foot on their necks it engenders a silo attitude. There is an epidemic of people thinking if they can push someone else down that means they must have power when there is nothin powerful about someone feeling so small that they have to hurt another to feel big. The good however outweighs the bad and as disgusting as the notion is that 6 people own 80% of the worlds wealth the fact that "the 1%" is only 1% of the population in terms of insatiable, selfish, avarice driven tortured souls is a great comfort. We can hold tightly onto the existence of billionaires like Manoj Bhargava and hope that Beyonce and Jayz sold that 85 million dollar house as soon as it was safe to spend that money on things that matter(like seriously im so grateful and your brilliant but seriously oh and you arent fooling anyone Tom Cruise) The truth is we think we know how our brain works but we don't. In actually our brains are negative averse so we are more likely to go for something that has a positive message than a negative one. So if your buying something that says its proceeds go to charity double check that sucker. To end on a less cynical note don't forget what John Hannah said in sliding doors about what the Monty Python boys said.......

What does that say about us as a society that the ridicule and meanness work? That the target audience eats it up? The whole reason Sam is able to view and critique the 10 worst is someone took time to create it. Because it would (and I'm sure did) get a ton of views on TH-cam. I found him ad a suggestion from TH-cam. I'm glad I did! Maybe his popularity is showing a shift in that audience. Maybe producers will pick up on it. We can hope!
You got so angry at how the judges treat these people, I could see it, and I love you for that. They're so unkind, purposely so. They stomp all over people just for views because other people like to watch people being stomped on. It's a vicious cycle and I'm so glad there are folks like you in the world with enough kindness to try to over come the cruelty. The world needs more people like you, Sam. Your videos are such a breath of fresh air. They’re so wholesome. You’re like the musical version of Bob Ross. TH-cam is over-saturated with reaction videos most of which have no entertainment value and 99% of which add nothing but negativity. You give such constructive feedback and seem so positive that anyone can sing that it makes me want to see if I could. Not to perform, just maybe sing in such a way that my dog doesn’t try to howl along? Anyway, I like that you also explain what we are hearing and why it sounds like that. This video, I can also see your absolute hatred for how contestants are handled on these types of shows.
Paula Abdul really has the most to be ashamed of. She is the most successful singer out of the three Judges. She could explain the same things that Sam Johnson explains. But she doesn't. Not even succinctly. It would be interesting if the Judges had to choose one "project" singer - one whose technique was not good but could be taught.

Sam is a teacher and coach and the AI judges are TV entertainers. This is the difference in comments. Sam’s were instructive, helpful, and kind. The judges were just mean for cheap laughs. Thank you Sam, we need more of you.
Yeah, because Simon said that Adam Lambert was "very theatrical" and couple years later Queen invited Adam too sing with them. Man these guys are douches laughing at peoples faces instead of telling them they need instruction on singing... Sam, you're a true teacher!
Your comments validate my reason for hating this show all this time. I'm not a fan of people bringing others down for entertainment. I think whoever does so has some serious issues of their own. The fact that these "judges" clearly can't see that some of these people have potential and that they would prefer to be cruel to them is especially upsetting.

I was told by my family that I wasn't any good at singing so I only sang to myself. I didn't decide until I was in my 30s to take voice lessons despite what my parents and grandparents told me. Come to find out I wasn't that bad and needed a coach that is like you are to tell me that I could sing and sing well. With her help I overcame my family's ridicule and actually sang at a few festivals and fairs and survived. I even auditioned and sang in The Sound of Music at our Community Theater. I am thankful for teachers that are like you. Keep up your work and inspire others like me that they can actually sing with a little help from a caring and compassionate teacher.
You know, you should take this idea and pitch it to an entertainment company. I would totally watch a show where it starts like this, and then through the show you work with them and we get to see their improvement.
Me three. It would make a great show. PLUS Idol has a lot of what I don't like about reality television - the idea that you have to exploit someone for it to be entertaining. He is just as entertaining without stripping people of their dignity.
I think a great show would be if they took singers like these with great potential and trained them and the audience got to see the progression of them improving and learning to really sing
The first music reality TV show in France was called Star Academy... 16 people who wanted to become singers lived in a castle for 3 to 4 months. They were coached for different subjects with professionals : music, singing, sports, dancing, theater... Every week, they got on the prime time show and sang with famous artists (French & International) and at the end of the show, a contestant was eliminated. The winner of the show won 1,000,000€ (to make an album)... It lasted 7 seasons, from 2001 to 2008. I really enjoyed the show because we could really see the improvement of each person. They were "normal" people, some with a talent, some who didn't sing well...
That would be real not "reality". These "reality" shows aren't real. They are produced. Personally, I'd love to see these "judges" sing against people someone like Sam trained. I'm pretty sure the singers that Sam trained would do better than the "judges". There's a reason I listen to K-Pop now instead of American music. They've invested time into their training. They strive to be perfect. We don't teach that anymore here. Art classes are cut every year.
I agree with you. But it was not in the USA, it was in France... Big difference at the time... The first show was 17 years ago, the contestants were really spontaneous, and so were the judges. Yes, it was produced, but it was real. Nowadays, people know how to play, they cast (mostly) stupid, pretentious, arrogant good looking people who fight and have sex on TV... At the time, it was different, Reality TV just started, Facebook, Instagram didn't exist then, and most of them came back to their anonymous lives when the show ended, not even trying to be famous. Now everybody wants to be a celebrity, and they go on these stupid Reality TV shows only to get followers, to become "influencers" and make money by "selling" products that they don't even try !

SO much. As do, thankfully, the commenters here. I didn't expect the likes and kind replies I got to my comment and it reduced me to (happy) tears to see - for once - such a kind response from people instead of the normal, horrific hatefilled insults that so often fill the TH-cam comments sections.
What’s the benefit in being mean? Ratings. That’s the benefit. That’s why they get put on camera even though there are two levels of auditions prior to seeing these judges. I don’t understand it personally. But I also suffer from fremdshamen- second hand embarrassment. I don’t feel glee when I see Simon being mean to some poor person who’s mum told them they were a good singer, but they just haven’t found the correct technique yet. I feel embarrassed and I feel bad for them. And I feel it so intensely that it took me ages to even watch this video, because I knew I’d feel embarrassed watching this, and it’s an awful feeling. And quite frankly, I don’t understand how people can’t feel that way. Is it a lack of empathy? Do they not care about the feelings of these people and thus, can’t feel secondhand embarrassment? What is it? I can’t even watch overly silly “comedy” because I feel a bit embarrassed by it. But this is worse- this is actual people, possibly having their feelings and passion crushed by uncaring arses who only care about exploiting them for ratings and money. How does anyone enjoy watching this?
My mother is a classically trained musician from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. She was the lead jazz vocalist in the Soviet National Orchestra and in my opinion has one of the best voices I've ever heard. Real talk: your analysis of the vocal instrument and your ability to really HEAR the voice is honesty as incredible, meaningful, and useful as hers ever was. You're a star and I hope you get the recognition you deserve. You have a fan in me. ❤
Some of those are plants for comedy and to break up the judges. But I immediately liked that this teacher didn't laugh. He was going to listen to what was actually going on.
Yeah man this teacher's got so much class. Just a real professional, direct, honest, and real. I'm constantly impressed by the man, I hope he really goes places.
Although I am a musician, this has also helped me, in going over ways in which I was conditioned growing up, that still effect me to this day. Nobody has to be a failure and give something up, if they are really connected to it. It is how people are on earth, but we don't all have to go along with it.
Sam needs to be a judge. I would watch these shows if they were actually productive. I find the judges tiredsome, boring, and unproductive. I think people would love to hear a professional that can give real feedback. It's refreshing how professional and positive Sam is. People in my opinion should take note.

Sam is a gem, a ball of light in darkness. You can see how passionate he is about helping people be better singers. He gets so angry when people are mean to others for trying their best.
Every now and then you come across someone who is extremely well suited to what they do, and you are one of those people. Articulate and thoughtful - you are a wonderful critic, and, no doubt, an extraordinary teacher. Keep up the good work!
They're laughing because that's what the show is about: cruelty. My friend auditioned and didn't even make it to the celebrity panel and she is GOOD. This? They flat out want to be hurtful and to entertain as a disguise to how disgusting they are.
If you read some of the accounts of people that tried out, it's pretty clear that the producers want something that sells so they go for the good story or the amazing voice matched with the innocuous look, through in a few ringers(that is obviously good singers with that sellable look) and then push in a bunch of bad/not great and horrible singers. The judges I imagine were at times tired and also tired of dealing with the bad to get to the good and while some of it was definitely deliberate for the show I think some of it was just spontaneous too. I've had to swallow laughter at a funeral and a graduation because of a bad performance and I genuinely felt horrible for the singers.
Ceares yes I know. It makes me mad because whether it’s the actual celebrity’s fault or not is up for debate. Really the first, what, 2 or 3 layers artists have to go through to make it to the celebrities is where the flaws are. Yes the producers are only looking for what makes a good show but it is so sad they turn down good talent and they KNOW and SEE they are doing America an injustice.
All of the actual AI contenders don’t go to the casting calls, 99% of them come from agent companies. These casting calls are for footage of bad singers and the occasional “you’re going to Hollywood!!” - just like 90% of talk show guests (even Dr Phil) are also discovered through agents. Same with reality TV.
Sam, this is your best video yet. The "judges" on all these reality talent shows are the most unprofessional people. Never take a person's dignity away. I cannot see entertainment treating people this way.
Sherry Karnes I agree. I can't believe I used to watch this shit and finding not much wrong with it. Actually, the Unchained Melody guy made a video explaining his appearance and said the judges were completely calm and stone-faced throughout, so the reactions we were shown might have been from a different audition altogether or recorded without any contestant in the room. That's a bit comforting, I guess.
I always feel ashamed when I watch singers with no or a little technic. Now I know why - bcos of the judges. I know what they'll tell, how cruel will be and I feel so sorry for the people who will have to face those words. You're a real professional Sam. I'm so glad to be here.
I'm not a singer, but when I heard the guy at 11:07 I thought he must be delusional to think he can audition but after hearing your professional perspective I'm honestly heartbroken for that guy. What a cruel way to tell someone something they needed to hear. I hope he found a coach as understanding as you and continued singing. You give me hope for my own voice and hope for humanity.

This made me cry. I love singing & I'm not awful but I definitely don't have any remarkable talent. I've worked to improve over the years (thanks to a friend who taught me that singing is technical & not just something you either have or don't have) and I would love to take lessons one day but I've always been too scared to actually consider doing it. I think of singing lessons as being for people who are already really talented and want to perfect their skill, so I fear getting laughed at or being told to give up (as my aforementioned friend was when she tried to take lessons). But this video made me believe that I am worthy of getting lessons if I want them, that I can improve, and that there are teachers who will build me up rather than tear me down. Sam, if I ever get up the courage to take singing lessons, they will be from you. Thank you.
Skye Wieler this is extremely late, but if you see this and still have the passion to sing, take lessons!! I started last year when I was 16 and in this one year I have improved tenfold. And I was bad. Voice lessons are not just for people who can already sing that's for sure. Going into my first lesson I was terrified that I was "too beginner" for the class-- but there isn't a thing as too beginner for a class. Everyone starts somewhere. Make sure if you are ever looking for teachers to find one that specializes in beginner singers. I have seen some that don't or just help with auditions and stuff, but yeah beginner teachers are always happy to help!
I can relate to this so much. I don't have an amazing voice, but it's okay and what's more, I enjoy singing! Even if it's just on my own in the car. I would love to take lessons just for my own enjoyment and improvement. I have learnt so much just from watching Sam's videos, and I love learning. I don't understand why taking lessons somehow means you want to become Ariana Grande or something! I know this is a late reply but I hope you ended up taking lessons, not for anyone else, just for you 💜
This is honestly the *nicest* review of any talent show 'fails' I've ever seen on youtube, incredible. I did smirk at "So clearly he has to work on... well, everything.." but still, such positivity, constructive ideas throughout
You've hit the nail on the head. These shows are geared to making people feel better about themselves at the expense of strangers trying to do something bigger with their lives. I've always hated the abject disdain judges on shows like this give contestants. Like, you're a natural singer and never needed help? Great. But don't knock the kid walking in with a dream. Tell him he isn't that great now, but give him good solid points he can improve on. Send them away with something learned, not something burned.
And then, somehow, the audience is supposed to get teary eyed when a contestant finally wins Simon's approval. Why? He's at best crusty and not great at useful criticism, at worst a cruel jackass who, as producer, orchestrates this whole dynamic. I feel like that aspect of the show is ideal for people who, deep down, still long for the approval of an emotionally unavailable and unkind parent.
I have never auditioned for one of these shows but I know they never show the full stuff so I wonder even if these people did get some advice from other people in the team and we just don't know? I don't know but common sense would say if you were rejected maybe try a voice teacher or get some more training or other opinions. If a person was truly determined they wouldn't put stock in what three people say, especially since there are billions of people in the world and chances are 30% of the people you meet in life will have something negative to say about you and your talents. It's just life.
There should be a singing competition in which you choose from singers that to the untrained ear just sound “bad” and train them and the winner is the vocal coach and singer at the end with the greatest improvement. I’d watch that.

I see a lot of comments telling him American Idol doesn't want someone that needs training, I think he knows that, it's the point that they could of given the contestants a quick bit of advice or suggestions instead of being a jerk crushing someone.
Sam, you remind me of my high school chorus teacher (Mr. Mac) so much. I did music (flute) from grade school and up. My senior year, I decided to take beginners chorus just for fun...knowing I had just an average voice. My teacher was convinced that I could sing much better than I thought. I just lacked confidence and technique. He really taught me how to sing properly and that the voice is an instrument, while being kind, and wow it made a difference! He even wanted to move me to honors chorus but my band schedule wouldn't allow it. He did include me in the honors group to sing at graduation and it made me feel so good. I still sound average just singing in the car for fun lol but I'm so glad that I can sing well when I actually try. Bless you, Sam, for being a true teacher!!! My Mr. Mac would love you! ❤

I was once chosen to sing in a choir competition at my school. There were better singers but I was chosen. It shocks me...but I remember choosing to learning everything my Music Teacher taught so intently, That probably helped
There are two sides to this: you actually do hear yourself significantly differently from how others hear you. The resonance of your head itself makes your internal voice sounds fuller and richer than externally to others. Even really good singers need to adjust to the sound of their voice in recordings. Most people cringe the first time they hear their own recorded voice regardless of their talent. On the other hand there are certain practices that sound better only to you but sound worse to others, like the contestant he was referring to. This is different from the former because you can easily just train and practice to fix this
My choir teacher back in high school told everyone in our vocal jazz ensemble to bring a tape recorder to our rehearsals to record ourselves. I thought it was a waste of money at first, and then I played back the tape...Yikes! I improved so much using that thing
HeavyMettle My first boyfriend brought a personal recorder and he recorded my voice. He played it back to me. Literally l didn't have that done to me since l was a kid learning to read and narrate in grade school! I recall a co worker said that "l don't know but l think you could be a good singer from you hearing you speak" . Or the time l was introduced to his best friend and he seemed impressed by my voice/speech for some reason. I actually was hearing what they were hearing and l really liked it. I had a very pleasant, warm, sort of medium pitched voice sprinkled with gold and copper. I think l sounded a little like Selena Gomez in voice a little. Now that I'm older my voice dropped in pitch. It also lost much of it's former brightness and turned dark. I also injured my voice singing inappropriately imitating female singers. After a year of vocal rest people commented on my voice. It was much weaker, l had a "metallic" tone, like a rattle in my throat. A musician said l sounded like Janis Joplin. It's been a long road to recovery and rehabilitation of my voice. I am not happy at all with my current speaking voice. My brother would say l can't hear you. I literally feel with the loss in brightness and lower tone, it is difficult to project my voice the way l did before when l was healthy (l didn't know how to sing then). It's been frustrating. It's affected my self esteem a bit. On the other hand l have improved my singing, and I'm singing healthily. I know l can sing better than anyone in my family (none are singers mind you) and most of my friends. I discovered that l have actually have a really low voice and that's cool because l have always admired contraltos and they are rather rare. Learning to sing as an adult though has been really hard. It's not as easy as it looks!
I put off watching this one because I thought it might endup being mean but Sam is so objective and constructive and empathetic. I'm glad I finally watched this.
Sam, have you considered doing any reactions to Voice blind auditions? I have often struggled to understand why the coaches on the Voice turn for some contestants and not others when they all sound pretty good to me. Most of the contestants on the Voice are out there gigging and have some sort of training/experience. Thanks for everything you do!
uselessreptile I swear ppl turn on the voice whenever someone does a climax, no matter how good or bad it is. They’re like “oh? A high note that sticks out from the rest of the song? I must turn!”
I prefer to watch The Voice as well (like a million times Lol), and I also find that very intriguing. I actually watch The Voice Brazil, and that thing of only turning when someone does a hiiigh note doesn't happen in here very often, which gets me more curious about the techniques used by the singers. Would love to learn more about it :)

I'm reminded of the quote that the female judge said after Susan Boyle's audition: "I think we were all being very cynical." That's how I felt coming into this. I was amazed that you didn't laugh, even when they did, but once I started hearing the analyses, and I could hear and see the things you were talking about, I started to understand why you weren't laughing. You have EMPATHY, and you're actually a good person. I felt so bad for the guy whose tongue was pulled to the back of his throat, and I could tell you did, too, and it just changed my entire perspective about the whole video. I was being cynical, and judgmental, too. Now I don't even want to, because now i can see how mean this is, unduly so. I used to laugh at auditions like this and now I don't want to do that, either. So thank you for making this video, because i needed the wake-up call. The world needs more people like you.
I’d love to see a show where Sam and positive vocal coaches rounded up these cast offs that made an honest effort and just gave them intensive training to see how far they could go.
I don't think Simon says much because he has no clue about what is going on in a persons mouth and throat when they sing good or bad. Simon is simply coming from a place of "I've heard a lot of good recordings of good singers so I know when someone sounds good." Yeah, pretty much all of us could do that. He brings abdolutely nothing else to the table at all, and frankly is pretty clueless about the actual workings of vocal production.
Simon's skillset is talent spotting. Not talent in the sense of technical skill necessarily, but "the talent" as in a marketable product. His end goal with Idol was to specifically find someone who had the makings of a Top 40 success, so helping people with their technique is not at all his interest if he doesn't like the rest of what they bring to the table. Him being rude about it is his own brand, that's what sells "Simon Cowell is in this show".
You, sir, are the very model of CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. You don't pander but are fair and balanced. The passion for music and desire to help others shines through. Thank you for being a light in this dark world.

Yup. I love to sing, when I listen to music I feel very deep stuff and I wanna shout it at the top of my lungs, make everyone feel what I'm feeling. I am TERRIBLE at singing, and all that people feel is ear pain. So I try to go to isolated spaces in order to not make people suffer, but I still sing my heart out, it's an actual emotional outlet, and I love it so much.

There is a new paradigm that is gaining momentum in our society. We are entering an age where Sams approach is becoming appreciated more and more. There is a balance, of course, between the differing forces, but we only need a tiny tiny dash of the simon cowell approach, in very specific circumstances, as compared to the much greater need for Sam's approach, which should be the default.
It feels really nice to watch and listen to Sam, and also to watch his voice reach more and more people. These things are evidence that the world is in the midst of a profound and beautiful shift.

As a mental health therapist who stumbled across your videos, I just want you to know your empathy and kindness are amazing. You're obviously an amazing voice teacher, but you should consider a backup career as a therapist:)

i am currently cycling through a bunch of vocal teachers to try to find the right fit and my observations are that no matter how amazing a teacher looks on paper, if they lack empathy and kindness, they cannot make good vocal teachers. I think those qualities are necessary for all teachers, but singing especially is such a personal, vulnerable experience. Unlike an instrument, which is independent and apart from you, you have to manipulate your own body, and unlike with dancing, where you can physically see and manipulate the body part you want to correct, you can't externally manipulate your vocal chords. You can't see what you are doing wrong and you can sort of feel it but the way it feels is often really vague and indeterminate. So when you are told you are not singing well, you feel like you yourself are being criticized and denied, and you don't get that separateness that you can get with instruments or even, to a lesser extent, with dancing. (I know this is why a lot of singers say "the voice" and I think Sam does too rather than "your voice" and it may sound really floofy but it does help depersonalize). So anyway long-winded response but yes, I agree Sam is extremely kind and empathetic and it is crucial to why he is probably an amazing vocal coach (I only say probably since I haven't had him as a teacher).

I just feel like Sam is so crazy passionate about music that whenever someone says that some people can't sing he goes into defense/motivational speaker mode. I wish most people with professional singing background and real knowledge on the subject would be this positive and kind to others who don't really know what they're doing, rather than just crushing people's dreams.

(This next part is conjecture and my personal opinion) I don't think he has star quality and would be mistaken if he continued a path trying to be an "American idol." Again, my personal opinion, but I'm guessing I wouldn't be the only one to think so. Even if he could hold a note, there wasn't anything alluring in his voice. Maybe I'm wrong, I very well could be. @@Angela-vl8yw I agree. As someone who cannot sing but dances in my spare time instead, I say the same thing to anyone who wants to learn but is worried about not being any good. Will I ever be professional? God no! But I go to classes, I practice and I can get out on a dance floor and rock it (which is why my friends have brought it up in the first place). And anyone else can learn to do the same.
Also, a dose of reality is that real auditions are not like American Idol. I know a few people who've been on auditioning panels and if they behaved like Simon Cowell does they'd be seen as pretty damn unprofessional.
They need a competition for people who want to learn to sing but need guidance. So all the judges would be vocal coaches, and they'd give constructive criticism to each contestant. No audition process involving the judges where these people are ridiculed, just a casting process off camera. And it should be called Anyone Can Sing. The winner would be who improves the most, and America could vote for them. I hate mocking and ridiculing people so much..

My mother used to ridicule me every time I sang along with the radio. She'd say things like "What did you do with the money I gave you?" When I'd say "What money?" She'd respond, "The money I gave you for singing lessons!" Like it was a big joke. I was convinced that I couldn't sing and so discouraged about my lack of ability that I joined band instead of choir. I learned to read music and was a very talented flute player. Music helped get me through high school. It wasn't until MUCH later in life that I realized that I actually have a nice voice. I've never been trained or taught about how to use it as an instrument, but I don't sound awful. Parents should encourage their children and not ridicule them. Build people up instead of destroying their confidence. Provide guidance, not criticism just for the sake of criticising.
It's a pathology in our society. I think it has to do with how much money has influenced music, so "the singer" is held above us in our heads -- same with the rest of music, really. It just shows how disconnected we are from the truth.
When our grandson , who lives with us, told us he wanted to sing at 12 we got him lessons. He had six years of lessons. Always encouraging him . 2 years of classical training, 3 years of choir and at 18 he is a fantastic singer. Going to major in music at college. Any kid who wants to sing needs and deserves support and all the help you can afford to give them.
It always makes me sad that these kind of parents exists because my mom was always so encouraging of any art form. I'm glad you broke free and discovered your talent.
Part of the problem with these auditioners is that they've been lied to for far too long.
The same thing happened to me, and it put me off ever sharing my voice with anyone. I still clam up when singing if I think a neighbor might hear me. It's pure shame. Sad that our parents were so inclined to put us down rather than lift us up.

I agree... I just found his channel a few days ago and I love his critique. Watching this is a real shame. I either can't BELIEVE the judges are being this harsh, or they don't have the technical expertise that Sam has and don't pick up on the mistakes that the contestants are making. Keep in mind, in game shows like this, a lot of times the singers are much better than they appear AND the judges aren't so rude irl. Often times, if somebody messes up, they'll be given another chance to perform to save face in front of the judges, but the previous recording is used in post. Other times, if they just decide they don't like somebody, they will technically alter a person's voice to sound worse. I auditioned for the next Star as a kid and didnt get in, but that's where I learned most of these talent shows have multiple levels before meeting the judges. (I still met the judges, Christina Agulara and 2 others completely by accident and they gave me a chance to sing a little and they complimented me but it was unofficial so I didnt get bumped up) but that's why usually to even MEET the judges you have to be good. However, some shows will PURPOSEFULLY choose bad singers to humiliate them. Yet most of the criticisms the judges say are written in later and they have the judges act it out when the singers aren't there. So while some of these people were using bad technique, some were also victims of circumstance. The best way to avoid humiliation is to take specialized training by a professional in advance (yes even of you're good) warm up well before your performance stay hydrated don't consume dairy that day (smooths your vocal chords, my mistake when I was at the next star) and dress to impress (on national TV "sex sells" so be sure to look good so they don't edit you to sound bad when you're a great singer just to have an extra person to exploit)

Doug Wheeler it really isn’t unique to voice teachers. This is what vocal pedagogy is about. Unless someone is studying vocal performance in college, they don’t think to seek out an actual voice teacher and rely on learning from someone who can maybe sing but really doesn’t know how to teach singing.

I am a professional singer but I wouldn't know where to start trying to teach someone... but I know that so I don't waste people's time. A lot of singers try to teach... but don't have the education to do so properly! I am also a softball pitcher and that I teach but I went to several camps/clinics/courses to learn how to teach pitching!

I've always wondered why the judges of singing contests are almost never voice teachers. You'd think it'd be a requirement to be a judge.
Mandalay Gray why would it need to be a requirement? Their jobs are not to teach or develop but to assess talent. Simon Cowell has proven that he is the best talent scout in the world. I agree that the old Simon Cowell went too far in tearing people down (he has become more compassionate), but the job of a judge is not to provide instruction, advice, or direction. It is up to the people who go on these shows to seek it out for themselves. Some people want to be able to sing without committing the time and work that is required. They have a mental image that it just comes naturally, so they try to figure it out in their own. When a person is displaying a lack of technique, a lack of natural ability, then harsh criticism is sometimes necessary to convince them that they are no good singers on their own. To not provide the harsh criticism can lead that delusional person to believe that they can improve on their own and that they just need to keep trying. All of these shows have vocal coaches who work with the the singers once they have made it past the audition. The judges judges and the teachers teach. Those who have not already sought out the proper instruction for themselves (or just have a natural ability) are the ones for whom the time and effort is reserved. Why should these shows invest time and effort into people who have not yet done so (with proper vocal coaches) themselves? If a person truly cares about singing, they will seek it out for themselves.
Because their job isn't to create good singers. Their job is to find a singer they can sell to the media. That's why they're always attractive and already trained / naturally gifted
The hosts don't get to decide who goes on - the show producers will push forward whoever they think will get more views. The show is very fake.

@F-zero91maru that's not the point. Anyone can sing. My partner loved singing but because he wasn't very good and was told he couldn't sing he stopped for a long time. I've encouraged him to sing (singing is great for you) and now he's audibly gotten better. Just because he got to practice.

I should probably just let this go, but it's bugging me so I'm going to say something. I've seen a few comments that say how the judges weren't being rude to laugh, they were just tired. They probably were tired, but that doesn't mean they weren't also rude. As someone who has auditioned a lot, seen a lot of auditions, been to a lot of performances I can tell you there is an etiquette to performances. These judges have been in the industry long enough to know that etiquette. They know it was rude. Simon even apologized as he was laughing. He wouldn't have apologized if he wasn't doing something wrong. They were rude because they thought it got them higher ratings. But look at how fast Sam's channel is growing. That proves you don't have to be rude to get an audience.
I'm so glad to see this comment! I've always thought that it was so rude for the judges to sit there and snort/giggle/outright laugh in someone's face as they were auditioning for them. Beyond being terribly unprofessional, it's also incredibly embarrassing and hurtful to the person auditioning. TV show or not, I've always found the rudeness of American Idol judges to be shameful, not funny.
Sadly the truth is that they are over the top hateful jerks because that is what people want to see. Ruined my day. EDIT: I watched a couple more and now the gears in my head are turning. There is more to this than what we see on the surface. There is a psychology to this and I'm going to go find what it is.

Randy and Simon aren't singers. They know how to produce someone, but they don't know so much about singing technique as an actual singer (or a voice coach). I think that's why they laugh and are assholes to people. To the untrained ear, these people sound completely hopeless.

That is why I like Simon as a judge. Because he has admitted this and admits that he bases his decisions when judging everything (not just singing) on what he likes and finds entertaining. And American Idol was when he was at his rude height, so it makes me think that he was told by the producers to do that.
I completely agree. As a judge, he is super entertaining. And when it comes down to it, although their reactions are rude, they area accurate to what the average listener's reaction would also be. I mean, unless you know the technical side of music/singing, they just sound hilarious. As far as entertainment goes, they do their job. But I also agree with Sam, in a way, that insulting them doesn't do any good. But American Idol isn't about making people feel good. It's about entertaining an audience.
Simon is one of the producers... He isn't told anything by anyone. They are not interested in coaching someone to improve. They want someone who is already ready to be sold as a product to the pop market... They are assholes for sure but it's also true they're not there to give advice at the auditions but just judge what's presented to them. Simon or the other one have no idea about singing technique so they just go for someone who sings ok and has the looks to be a potential pop star.
Did you know that these people have to go through producer's auditions to appear for the actual auditions? These guys are given false hope and put in this position just for "entertainment purposes". I think that's messed up.
Yes! They pick these poor souls to advance to seeing the real judges. So they are made to believe that they are good enough to get to the TV audition phase when, in fact, they are put on TV to be ridiculed. I had to stop watching the show because it was so cruel to these people. Purposely putting these people into a situation to be laughed at and ridiculed is heartless.

Derek Charette i know what your saying but we all think that a lot of the time because that is the narrative we've been pushed by media to believe because it keeps us apathetic but most people have a normal level of emotional intelligence and the best thing about EQ is that it can be learnt. I mean look at Queer Eye! American Idol makes a shit tone of money pushing that negativity because its easy for them, it shouldn't be. That doesn't mean they couldn't make just as much with a smarter, kinder show that actually gives a shit about people and singing and lets face it, society. I totally agree that there are a lot of insecure people out there afraid and angry that haven't found strength yet in lifting themselves up by lifting others up too. Especially when society has had its foot on their necks it engenders a silo attitude. There is an epidemic of people thinking if they can push someone else down that means they must have power when there is nothin powerful about someone feeling so small that they have to hurt another to feel big. The good however outweighs the bad and as disgusting as the notion is that 6 people own 80% of the worlds wealth the fact that "the 1%" is only 1% of the population in terms of insatiable, selfish, avarice driven tortured souls is a great comfort. We can hold tightly onto the existence of billionaires like Manoj Bhargava and hope that Beyonce and Jayz sold that 85 million dollar house as soon as it was safe to spend that money on things that matter(like seriously im so grateful and your brilliant but seriously oh and you arent fooling anyone Tom Cruise) The truth is we think we know how our brain works but we don't. In actually our brains are negative averse so we are more likely to go for something that has a positive message than a negative one. So if your buying something that says its proceeds go to charity double check that sucker. To end on a less cynical note don't forget what John Hannah said in sliding doors about what the Monty Python boys said.......

I was told by my family that I wasn't any good at singing so I only sang to myself. I didn't decide until I was in my 30s to take voice lessons despite what my parents and grandparents told me. Come to find out I wasn't that bad and needed a coach that is like you are to tell me that I could sing and sing well. With her help I overcame my family's ridicule and actually sang at a few festivals and fairs and survived. I even auditioned and sang in The Sound of Music at our Community Theater. I am thankful for teachers that are like you. Keep up your work and inspire others like me that they can actually sing with a little help from a caring and compassionate teacher.

The first music reality TV show in France was called Star Academy... 16 people who wanted to become singers lived in a castle for 3 to 4 months. They were coached for different subjects with professionals : music, singing, sports, dancing, theater... Every week, they got on the prime time show and sang with famous artists (French & International) and at the end of the show, a contestant was eliminated. The winner of the show won 1,000,000€ (to make an album)... It lasted 7 seasons, from 2001 to 2008.
I really enjoyed the show because we could really see the improvement of each person. They were "normal" people, some with a talent, some who didn't sing well...

That would be real not "reality". These "reality" shows aren't real. They are produced. Personally, I'd love to see these "judges" sing against people someone like Sam trained. I'm pretty sure the singers that Sam trained would do better than the "judges". There's a reason I listen to K-Pop now instead of American music. They've invested time into their training. They strive to be perfect. We don't teach that anymore here. Art classes are cut every year.

But it was not in the USA, it was in France... Big difference at the time... The first show was 17 years ago, the contestants were really spontaneous, and so were the judges. Yes, it was produced, but it was real.
Nowadays, people know how to play, they cast (mostly) stupid, pretentious, arrogant good looking people who fight and have sex on TV...
At the time, it was different, Reality TV just started, Facebook, Instagram didn't exist then, and most of them came back to their anonymous lives when the show ended, not even trying to be famous. Now everybody wants to be a celebrity, and they go on these stupid Reality TV shows only to get followers, to become "influencers" and make money by "selling" products that they don't even try !
Kinda like the worst cooks in America but for singing! I think that's a great idea.

Ratings. That’s the benefit. That’s why they get put on camera even though there are two levels of auditions prior to seeing these judges.
I don’t understand it personally. But I also suffer from fremdshamen- second hand embarrassment. I don’t feel glee when I see Simon being mean to some poor person who’s mum told them they were a good singer, but they just haven’t found the correct technique yet. I feel embarrassed and I feel bad for them. And I feel it so intensely that it took me ages to even watch this video, because I knew I’d feel embarrassed watching this, and it’s an awful feeling.
And quite frankly, I don’t understand how people can’t feel that way. Is it a lack of empathy? Do they not care about the feelings of these people and thus, can’t feel secondhand embarrassment? What is it? I can’t even watch overly silly “comedy” because I feel a bit embarrassed by it. But this is worse- this is actual people, possibly having their feelings and passion crushed by uncaring arses who only care about exploiting them for ratings and money.

My mother is a classically trained musician from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. She was the lead jazz vocalist in the Soviet National Orchestra and in my opinion has one of the best voices I've ever heard. Real talk: your analysis of the vocal instrument and your ability to really HEAR the voice is honesty as incredible, meaningful, and useful as hers ever was. You're a star and I hope you get the recognition you deserve. You have a fan in me. ❤

Some of those are plants for comedy and to break up the judges. But I immediately liked that this teacher didn't laugh. He was going to listen to what was actually going on.

Although I am a musician, this has also helped me, in going over ways in which I was conditioned growing up, that still effect me to this day. Nobody has to be a failure and give something up, if they are really connected to it. It is how people are on earth, but we don't all have to go along with it.
Sam needs to be a judge. I would watch these shows if they were actually productive. I find the judges tiredsome, boring, and unproductive. I think people would love to hear a professional that can give real feedback. It's refreshing how professional and positive Sam is. People in my opinion should take note.

They're laughing because that's what the show is about: cruelty. My friend auditioned and didn't even make it to the celebrity panel and she is GOOD. This? They flat out want to be hurtful and to entertain as a disguise to how disgusting they are.

If you read some of the accounts of people that tried out, it's pretty clear that the producers want something that sells so they go for the good story or the amazing voice matched with the innocuous look, through in a few ringers(that is obviously good singers with that sellable look) and then push in a bunch of bad/not great and horrible singers.
The judges I imagine were at times tired and also tired of dealing with the bad to get to the good and while some of it was definitely deliberate for the show I think some of it was just spontaneous too. I've had to swallow laughter at a funeral and a graduation because of a bad performance and I genuinely felt horrible for the singers.
Ceares yes I know. It makes me mad because whether it’s the actual celebrity’s fault or not is up for debate. Really the first, what, 2 or 3 layers artists have to go through to make it to the celebrities is where the flaws are. Yes the producers are only looking for what makes a good show but it is so sad they turn down good talent and they KNOW and SEE they are doing America an injustice.
All of the actual AI contenders don’t go to the casting calls, 99% of them come from agent companies. These casting calls are for footage of bad singers and the occasional “you’re going to Hollywood!!” - just like 90% of talk show guests (even Dr Phil) are also discovered through agents. Same with reality TV.
Ive always refused to watch these shows for that reason. Like he says. They want them to fail.

Sherry Karnes I agree. I can't believe I used to watch this shit and finding not much wrong with it. Actually, the Unchained Melody guy made a video explaining his appearance and said the judges were completely calm and stone-faced throughout, so the reactions we were shown might have been from a different audition altogether or recorded without any contestant in the room. That's a bit comforting, I guess.
I always feel ashamed when I watch singers with no or a little technic. Now I know why - bcos of the judges. I know what they'll tell, how cruel will be and I feel so sorry for the people who will have to face those words. You're a real professional Sam. I'm so glad to be here.

I'm not a singer, but when I heard the guy at 11:07 I thought he must be delusional to think he can audition but after hearing your professional perspective I'm honestly heartbroken for that guy. What a cruel way to tell someone something they needed to hear. I hope he found a coach as understanding as you and continued singing. You give me hope for my own voice and hope for humanity.

I love singing & I'm not awful but I definitely don't have any remarkable talent. I've worked to improve over the years (thanks to a friend who taught me that singing is technical & not just something you either have or don't have) and I would love to take lessons one day but I've always been too scared to actually consider doing it. I think of singing lessons as being for people who are already really talented and want to perfect their skill, so I fear getting laughed at or being told to give up (as my aforementioned friend was when she tried to take lessons).
But this video made me believe that I am worthy of getting lessons if I want them, that I can improve, and that there are teachers who will build me up rather than tear me down.
Sam, if I ever get up the courage to take singing lessons, they will be from you. Thank you.
Skye Wieler this is extremely late, but if you see this and still have the passion to sing, take lessons!! I started last year when I was 16 and in this one year I have improved tenfold. And I was bad. Voice lessons are not just for people who can already sing that's for sure. Going into my first lesson I was terrified that I was "too beginner" for the class-- but there isn't a thing as too beginner for a class. Everyone starts somewhere. Make sure if you are ever looking for teachers to find one that specializes in beginner singers. I have seen some that don't or just help with auditions and stuff, but yeah beginner teachers are always happy to help!
I can relate to this so much. I don't have an amazing voice, but it's okay and what's more, I enjoy singing! Even if it's just on my own in the car. I would love to take lessons just for my own enjoyment and improvement. I have learnt so much just from watching Sam's videos, and I love learning. I don't understand why taking lessons somehow means you want to become Ariana Grande or something! I know this is a late reply but I hope you ended up taking lessons, not for anyone else, just for you 💜
This is honestly the *nicest* review of any talent show 'fails' I've ever seen on youtube, incredible. I did smirk at "So clearly he has to work on... well, everything.." but still, such positivity, constructive ideas throughout
The boy that had to work on everything had the tools, but not the technic. Nobody here had a broken voice, so all could improve by better technic.

You've hit the nail on the head. These shows are geared to making people feel better about themselves at the expense of strangers trying to do something bigger with their lives. I've always hated the abject disdain judges on shows like this give contestants. Like, you're a natural singer and never needed help? Great. But don't knock the kid walking in with a dream. Tell him he isn't that great now, but give him good solid points he can improve on. Send them away with something learned, not something burned.
And then, somehow, the audience is supposed to get teary eyed when a contestant finally wins Simon's approval. Why? He's at best crusty and not great at useful criticism, at worst a cruel jackass who, as producer, orchestrates this whole dynamic. I feel like that aspect of the show is ideal for people who, deep down, still long for the approval of an emotionally unavailable and unkind parent.
I have never auditioned for one of these shows but I know they never show the full stuff so I wonder even if these people did get some advice from other people in the team and we just don't know? I don't know but common sense would say if you were rejected maybe try a voice teacher or get some more training or other opinions. If a person was truly determined they wouldn't put stock in what three people say, especially since there are billions of people in the world and chances are 30% of the people you meet in life will have something negative to say about you and your talents. It's just life.
There should be a singing competition in which you choose from singers that to the untrained ear just sound “bad” and train them and the winner is the vocal coach and singer at the end with the greatest improvement. I’d watch that.

I see a lot of comments telling him American Idol doesn't want someone that needs training, I think he knows that, it's the point that they could of given the contestants a quick bit of advice or suggestions instead of being a jerk crushing someone.
Sam, you remind me of my high school chorus teacher (Mr. Mac) so much. I did music (flute) from grade school and up. My senior year, I decided to take beginners chorus just for fun...knowing I had just an average voice. My teacher was convinced that I could sing much better than I thought. I just lacked confidence and technique. He really taught me how to sing properly and that the voice is an instrument, while being kind, and wow it made a difference! He even wanted to move me to honors chorus but my band schedule wouldn't allow it. He did include me in the honors group to sing at graduation and it made me feel so good. I still sound average just singing in the car for fun lol but I'm so glad that I can sing well when I actually try. Bless you, Sam, for being a true teacher!!! My Mr. Mac would love you! ❤

I was once chosen to sing in a choir competition at my school. There were better singers but I was chosen. It shocks me...but I remember choosing to learning everything my Music Teacher taught so intently, That probably helped

There are two sides to this: you actually do hear yourself significantly differently from how others hear you. The resonance of your head itself makes your internal voice sounds fuller and richer than externally to others. Even really good singers need to adjust to the sound of their voice in recordings. Most people cringe the first time they hear their own recorded voice regardless of their talent.
On the other hand there are certain practices that sound better only to you but sound worse to others, like the contestant he was referring to. This is different from the former because you can easily just train and practice to fix this
My choir teacher back in high school told everyone in our vocal jazz ensemble to bring a tape recorder to our rehearsals to record ourselves. I thought it was a waste of money at first, and then I played back the tape...Yikes! I improved so much using that thing
HeavyMettle My first boyfriend brought a personal recorder and he recorded my voice. He played it back to me. Literally l didn't have that done to me since l was a kid learning to read and narrate in grade school! I recall a co worker said that "l don't know but l think you could be a good singer from you hearing you speak" . Or the time l was introduced to his best friend and he seemed impressed by my voice/speech for some reason. I actually was hearing what they were hearing and l really liked it. I had a very pleasant, warm, sort of medium pitched voice sprinkled with gold and copper. I think l sounded a little like Selena Gomez in voice a little.
Now that I'm older my voice dropped in pitch. It also lost much of it's former brightness and turned dark. I also injured my voice singing inappropriately imitating female singers. After a year of vocal rest people commented on my voice. It was much weaker, l had a "metallic" tone, like a rattle in my throat. A musician said l sounded like Janis Joplin. It's been a long road to recovery and rehabilitation of my voice. I am not happy at all with my current speaking voice. My brother would say l can't hear you. I literally feel with the loss in brightness and lower tone, it is difficult to project my voice the way l did before when l was healthy (l didn't know how to sing then). It's been frustrating. It's affected my self esteem a bit. On the other hand l have improved my singing, and I'm singing healthily. I know l can sing better than anyone in my family (none are singers mind you) and most of my friends. I discovered that l have actually have a really low voice and that's cool because l have always admired contraltos and they are rather rare. Learning to sing as an adult though has been really hard. It's not as easy as it looks!
I forever say that just because you're a singer doesn't mean you can be a vocal coach/judge that's what bothers me about these shows.

Sam, have you considered doing any reactions to Voice blind auditions? I have often struggled to understand why the coaches on the Voice turn for some contestants and not others when they all sound pretty good to me. Most of the contestants on the Voice are out there gigging and have some sort of training/experience.

I prefer to watch The Voice as well (like a million times Lol), and I also find that very intriguing. I actually watch The Voice Brazil, and that thing of only turning when someone does a hiiigh note doesn't happen in here very often, which gets me more curious about the techniques used by the singers. Would love to learn more about it :)

I'm reminded of the quote that the female judge said after Susan Boyle's audition: "I think we were all being very cynical." That's how I felt coming into this. I was amazed that you didn't laugh, even when they did, but once I started hearing the analyses, and I could hear and see the things you were talking about, I started to understand why you weren't laughing. You have EMPATHY, and you're actually a good person. I felt so bad for the guy whose tongue was pulled to the back of his throat, and I could tell you did, too, and it just changed my entire perspective about the whole video.
I was being cynical, and judgmental, too. Now I don't even want to, because now i can see how mean this is, unduly so. I used to laugh at auditions like this and now I don't want to do that, either. So thank you for making this video, because i needed the wake-up call.

I don't think Simon says much because he has no clue about what is going on in a persons mouth and throat when they sing good or bad. Simon is simply coming from a place of "I've heard a lot of good recordings of good singers so I know when someone sounds good." Yeah, pretty much all of us could do that. He brings abdolutely nothing else to the table at all, and frankly is pretty clueless about the actual workings of vocal production.

His job is to play it up for viewers. He's not a professional singer of any kind, he's obviously there to provide entertainment.
Simon's skillset is talent spotting. Not talent in the sense of technical skill necessarily, but "the talent" as in a marketable product. His end goal with Idol was to specifically find someone who had the makings of a Top 40 success, so helping people with their technique is not at all his interest if he doesn't like the rest of what they bring to the table. Him being rude about it is his own brand, that's what sells "Simon Cowell is in this show".
Who else can see Sam struggling to keep the rage monster inside every time the judges tell anyone not to sing?
