There's a spectacular performance of this song from 2017, it's called Live at the Zenith.
I agree, and I wasn’t impressed with what I have seen of Nightwish at Hellfest either.
Yeah I don't know who suggested this but it's a shame that people are reacting to bad versions of songs from Hellfest.
They are decent but not good material for a first reaction.
@@TheVocalyst Yeah sadly the Hellfest stream was subpar in audio, for Epica reactions go with the Live at Zenith, Live at Retrospect or Omega Alive versions, or any called Official Live on Epicas youtube page, they all have superb audio.
Zenith recording is spectacular, truth be told, in the past she sometimes had bad nights. But let's be honest here, it's a metal concert with everyone going on 11. Even Simone is 'only human' lolz

Hi Bethany, to be honest you would need to listen to 20 songs from EPICA to really get an idea what they are about, unlike any other band that I have heard, EPICA's catalogue of music covers such a very wide range of styles, as a rough breakdown of their content I would put the heavy songs like Consign to Oblivion at around 25% of their music, with 50% in the more melodic progressive metal category, leaving 25% for their breathtakingly beautiful ballads and acoustic songs, here is a song which is more in the melodic progressive metal category, I think you will like this one:

Some people might argue that Omega Alive wasn't "really live". For "Simone in goddess mode" I would suggest for example her performance from Masters of Rock 2014. You know, the video with 2 songs... Unleashed and Storm the Sorrow. She was totally on fire! 🙂
To be fair, "Consign To Oblivion" is probably not "the best representation of their music" either, since they really just do a lot of different stuff. If anything, this song is actually not very typical due to how little spotlight is focused on Simone. They do the most beautiful, soul-touching ballads ("Rivers" or "Tides of Time") and more brutal symphonic pieces like this one. And then everything in-between. My personal favorite from them has been "Code of Life" recently, can't wait for a good quality live version of that song to come out.

That's the beauty of Epica, nothing is typical.
Epica has different kind of songs so its hard to pic one for best representation. Maybe Skeleton key is somewhere in the middle

This song is usually their show ender. Simone was quite spent here, a bit "out of shape" after 2 years of pandemic. There are better recordings of this on youtube, for instance live at Zenith is the typical recommendations for this song.

One thing that is never emphatized enough about this live recording, and that may explain why Simone seems so "exhausted'" is that Hellfest takes place at the end of June, and it looks like they performed in the middle of the afternoon. It had to be fucking hot

You're right, it's the last song at every concert and it is possible that Simone was a little tired, the weather was hot and they had a concert the day before in Germany, in a small venue, I was there and it felt like being in the sauna. So there was not much time to rest. If you have the opportunity to see Epica or Nightwish, do it. Greetings from Germany
I've heard this song countless times, but haven't seen this specific performance yet. You are certainly correct that Simone sounds a little tired at times, there's definitely a clear difference between this and their official live from the Zenith concert, for example. Even though she still sounds quite lovely, despite the audible tiredness.
If you're interested in more Epica, "Code of Life" or "Rivers" from their new album would be great and something different. Or perhaps the official live of "The Essence of Silence".

Can totally understand why ppl would prefer other versions than Hellfest, but still it's interesting to see how songsters cope with less than ideal circumstances. I witnessed Floor pull it off at tropical Pinkpop and noticed some of the things you pointed out here Bethany. Enjoyed your reaction very much.
Noticed someone suggested Marcela Bovio in MayaN, a "side project" by Epica's Mark Jansen. Excellent recommendation! "Rebirth from Despair (live)", to showcase Marcela's versatility 👍

Great analysis, Beth! I saw the stream of the concert live, and it was quite a show, even though the quality of the stream was so-so. I'd be very interested in your analysis of Code of Life from Omega (Simone said it was her favorite song to sing from the album and I think I know why) or their Unleashed performance from Retrospect :) Take care!

Disappointed. You reacted to one of the worst performances of this song you can find on youtube today. For some reason you have missed the most obvious choice, the official live version of this song that everyone loves; the pefectly executed live at Zentith performance. Also I will never understand how someone would recoomend this song to a vocal coach as 'a good representation' of what Epica does or of how Simone sings. If anything this song would be one of the worst Epica song examples to recomend to a vocal coach as good viewing/listening to get an idea about the cocal qualities of Simone Simons.

This is a fantastic song and a great example of Epica’s songwriters and also the lyrics are so deep and amazing.
Mark Jansen the founder and guitarist also has a side project called Mayan (Rebirth from Despair live) who has several interesting vocalists, including Marcela Bovio, who also is part of the Ayreon universe (another rabbit hole for you to explore) and as a vocal coach I would recommend Valley of the Queens.
To my untrained ear I think the start was 7/4 but I am sure others will have the correct info. Keep up your great work and enthusiasm.

Should you be interested in exploring Marcela's vocal abilities some more, I'd propose her recent project "Dark Horse White Horse" (with two former ReVamp members, Floor's band before NW). Epica is my favourite band together with Eluveitie. Epica has such a diverse discography like almost no other band has!So you have a great long journey with the magical Epica. Well yes Simone sounded indeed a bit tired but still she has that beautiful crystal clear soprano voice, like no other female in metal has. I love the emotions she gives me with her voice and stage presence. She is easily one of the best in metal and for me one of my three absolute favourite female vocalists besides Floor and Fabienne Erni of Eluveitie.
And I forgot to tell you why she also maybe was a bit tired. The evening before I was at their show in Saarbrücken (Germany) together with Eluveitie. Epica ended the show a little too late round 23.30 hours (11.30 pm). So I guess Simone had due to this too less sleep/rest. With that being said I have even more respect for the band and Simone.
@@TheVocalyst Epica' s schedule last months and the months coming up is huge. Until somehere in feb 2023 they are traveling the world without much breaks in between.
For Epica, Simone writes vocal melodies and half of Epica's lyrics.

Her more popy sound at the end, is my personal highlight of that song in particular.
Most Epica songs have a bit more singing from Simone. This song is one of my favs but there are significantly less parts where she sings. I think you would absolutely love The Skeleton Key by Epica, from their live stream performance called Omega Alive. Also if you're looking for more of a ballad, Rivers is absolutely beautiful (there's an official video). They will surprise you with every song!
Yeah, these are great analysis but I think the choice of song gets in the way a little bit of having her react more to Simone's singing. Sancta Terra with Floor has a problem that imo a lot of the more interesting parts of Simone's singing take a back seat to having the arrangements between the two of them work, and Consign to Oblivion is just not a song that has a lot of her singing at all. Skeleton Key would make for more encompassing analysis, it's probably one of the ones that have the most variety of ways she uses her voice. Maybe Abyss of Time if focusing on the ones that have more of her voice on it's own instead of the blend with the choir that to me is a lot of Epica's signature sound
Very fair and honest analysis of WVS (weary voice syndrome). Simone is such a pro and probably would admit that she was reaching into her soul for every final high note on that performance. I’ll bet 71,000 fans went home with huge adrenaline rushes! Great reaction, thanks. 😊🤘
One thing to add to the strain is that this was an outdoor daytime show in high heat. I'm sure that took a great deal out of her as well.

Omega-ness?? lol Omega is the title of their current 8th album. If you want to hear something from that, try The Skeleton Key , The Abyss of Time, or Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3. Abyss of Time(with intro) opened this show, and all 3 were played at Omega Alive virtual show.

Consign to Oblivion is usually the last song that EPICA performs and it was probably very hot at that festival. Everybody in the band was probably a little tired. There is another version of this song at an indoor concert. Also some new EPICA has been released - The Final Lullaby.
As others have said, their performance at the Zenith was absolutely brilliant, worth checking out just to see the difference. Either way love this song and love Simone, thanks for doing it!

I enjoyed a different performance of this song. As mentioned, not the best live version, but Still a great performance. A lot of bands look spent at this gig because of the heat. All the pryo can’t be helping with that lol

I don't know how you picked this version of the live but it is NOT a good version. A simple search would show you that the one all reactors use is the one from Paris.

Since you did Epica in Hellfest, I recommend to react to Nightwish at Hellfest as well. The whole consert was really awesome, but Noise (the show opener) or Planet Hell (to see how Floor cope with this really challenging song without Marco) would be a good pick.
You're probably right. Simone looks and sounds a bit out of breath. Mind me, I was already floored by this time.

Now a lot of people will scold me, but I think the recording itself is not the real one, somehow I hear it as drawn out and dull in my opinion, in concert quality, what Wacken is to Nightwish, Zenith is to Epica....
Epica: we are Symphonic metal but throw in prog metal with very odd times like other peog bands do.

Love this one, and love the lives they're making with it each time in France : this time at Hellfest but above all, the official live in Zenith Paris, where Simone 's part is better done (maybe not so tired ?). The all band is active and great, as ever
Besides beautyfull, you are very polite and perceptive. Simone is not at her best in that song. Her voice is thin, diction is bad and pitch is not allways accurate.

A very good band for you to know is Kamelot. The name of Banda Epica was inspired by Kamelot's Album - Epica, whose husband Simone Simons is keyboardist.

This band was named after an album by another legendary band -- Kamelot. At the time they had a singer named Roy Khan who is one of the finest vocalists ever, then he was replaced by Tommy Karevik, another of the finest vocalists ever. I highly recommend checking Kamelot out for vocal appreciation. Roy and Simone have an especially delicious duet, The Haunting.
She used the same mixed voice quality in Sancta Terra. She was going back-and-forth the entire time there actually.
No reason to apologize, i think, you hit this Performances very well, without taking anything of Simones Talent away. Live at the Zenith, 10th Year retrospect, same as NM Wacken 2k13, are super produced an postproducted Live Cuts, whereas no Hellfest or Deichbrand 2k22 can cope with, at actual State.

- Ana Carolina ft Seu Jorge: é isso ai; I mean.. no words needed! One of the biggest songs in Brazil!
- Marília Mendonça: Infiel; one of the biggest artists in brazil! She passed away last year (plane crash) and 100k + people went to her funeral! It’s our gem 💛
Poor Simone was all over the place in this one, but it's understandable, it's quite a demanding song.
She knocks it out of the park in the Zenith version.
Particularly I prefer the version of this song in the live DVD because Simone seems tired here and it isn't her usual. She is missing some notes or let them die before than right time. I suggest that you watch - for yourself, not a reaction - the version from the "Live at Zenith". It's wayyyyy better [and she was pregnant there, but yet made wonderful performance].

In a recent interview, Simone said that her fall-back when she is tired or feeling unwell is to lean on her head voice. Head voice comes easier to her than the mix under those circumstances. As a casual listener, I would also say there's a lot more head voice here than the studio version (or even other live versions I've seen) - not a bad thing, but a sign that you are likely correct in your reading of the situation. :) No idea about the circumstances around this particular show, but it doesn't seem typical. The section you liked a lot at the end, is more of what I consider her usual sound, and she may have been 'saving up' to finish strong, so to speak. I hope you see more Epica!

I just loved you reacted to this song in particular... Epica is an amazing band, I´ve known their music sins 2007 and I just fell in love with it ... I have seen them grow as a band and got better, and better and Cosign to Oblivion is just a magnific masterpiece..

I wanted to stop by to tell you that Diana Ankudinova just released an original song written totally by her for the music to the lyrics if you were intrested in seeing what she is really capable of doing now is your chance lol the name of the song is "Revelation" I think you will be both moved and amazed by her first try at writing an original by herself.

I saw them in concert 2 weeks ago and they were exceptional! They seem a little tired in this one. Still great though.
Unleash the archers - Awakening is a great song to react to. It's more on the power metal side. It really shows how diverse and different metal singers really are.
it was also hotter than the hubs of hell, all of the concerts I've watched the bands looked like they had just did a triple triathalon by then end of their set.

I was in the third row in front of Epica and Nightwish at Hellfest. Both bands did a fantastic job. For Epica, songs from this concert like "Cry for the Moon" or "Unchain Utopia" are more suitable to hear Simone's voice in a live festival ambience. For Nightwish, well, you could take "Storytime" or "Shoemaker". Quality of the ARTE video is really good.
