  • You ever been to Moab? You gotta take that Runner to Moab, man. Come on, you gotta get the rubber up on that slick rock over there! Sandstone! Petrified sand dunes! Black tracks as far as the eye can see! The rock is like sandpaper, and it grips the tires like a dick in a Chinese finger trap! You just don't know, man! YOU JUST DON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU'RE UP THERE.

    As the previous (and original) owner of that vehicle, all I have to say is... "Hey! I was wondering where that Phil Collins tape went! I'll be needing that back." Ok... One more thing... it's rad to see the level of bad-assery that has been made from what was once a pretty humble vehicle. Keep truckin' 22RE.

Well, now I have three and I completely get it now. They’re slow and becoming increasingly harder to maintain, but God are they fun.

    "We ALL want them, because we want our INDIVIDUALITY back" (emphasis added).
    You can still modify a modern 4runner (although it may be more difficult), I don't think it's individuality that is lacking. I for one, miss the small truck of the 80s: these days the "compact" trucks seem to be getting bigger, more expensive and posting worse mileage out of a 4 cyl than some of the V6 full size trucks. What's the point? Not to mention the aesthetics: the no-nonsense, practical boxy approach is more appealing to some of us than all this bloated, rounded, long sweeping headlight bullshit plaguing many modern designs.

    I hate Toyotas because they used to make such good cars up until now. This is one hell of a machine! The MR2, the Land Cruiser, RWD Celica, Supra, and other Toyota models from the past were so good. Now that soul, that passion, and fun is gone. They are now glorified rental cars for yuppies. Props to the guy who built this amazing machine.

    So true about how modern cars are really losing their sense of character. Currently driving an '89 Volvo 240 with a 3 speed auto that's slower than molasses, but damn I love her, and I'm determined to keep her on the road as long as possible. Just got parts in the mail to rebuild the front suspension before winter.
    Absolutely love this channel. Keep doin' what you're doin' Mr. Regular!

    • @johnpearson492
      @johnpearson492 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I very much agree. I even find myself enjoying the character of my 99 Oldsmobile 88. I like the grunt of the big V6 engine where as a modern car would have a refined turbo 4 that is highly strung to get the power out of it that the old big displacement V6s had.
      You also just nailed the reason why people use to love everything BMW made but now most reviewers are throwing them to the wayside. They just don't feel special, they don't have character because they are so refined and good at every little thing that they don't have any flaws and short comings to enjoy. I love revving the engine out on an old BMW 6 cylinder, when ever you sent it high in the revs it rewarded you with good power and some amazing sounds. The new ones with their turbo power delivers so much power down low that you never feel the need to rev it out and when you do they fall more flat then the older naturally aspirated engines.

    • @tlaroche38
      @tlaroche38 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My current car is an '02 Vauxhall Astra, and even that seems like it has more character than anything new out at the moment. When I was learning to drive my instructor had a Hyundai i20, that thing had about as much character as a laptop. I've recently bought a '89 Vauxhall Senator, and it has all the fancy gadgets that most modern cars have (cruise control, climate control etc) but there's just something about it that sets it apart... It feels far less clinical and refined, far more mechanical. You get a sense like you're actually in a machine as opposed to just a computer on wheels.

    • @Dilomski
      @Dilomski 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree, I drive a `92 Peugeot 309, which maybe be look used and abused, but still going strong after 25 years on the road.Cant see the new plastic fantastic cars after 25 years.This is the times where they build cars to last, not to calculate that the car will start to break apart shorty after 5 year warranty goes by.

      I got a 91 and i love when i get a wave or a thumbs up, idk why i just love these trucks and suvs. its just so satisfying when i get in it and turn the key and i never skips a beat. and all i had to do the motor is put a piece of tape over the idle control valve to bring the idle where it should be rather than buy a whole new throttle body and add a little bit of oil every now and then between changes.

Not only would a car this heavy cost fortunes in tax here, and I can imagine it's quite thirsty, so add that and it becomes near unaffordable for most. I can't agree more! It's such a shame when you see this imaginative world forgot where it came from, it's no wonder when you go to rural areas that these are THE BEST trucks, they even double there value because they are so good, Even so that's a kick ass truck. Second, don't worry, that's why there is such a kick ass aftermarket for these trucks, you could literally pick one up (watch out for frame rust, that's a tough one) and totally restore it and find all the parts you need to your liking and call it good for at least a good ten years, you could never ending rebuild them, not this mumbo jumbo of changing cars like cellphones. It's just crazy but literally the trucks that came after these are in my mind a step downward because these are at the top. Cheers, Happy owner of an '88 standard cab :)

    And I say that as an unashamed fan of the mid 80s 4Runners.

    Nice review of one of the best Toyotas on the Trail. You hit the nail on the head when you state that no modern SUV can handle the off road like these old Yotas. But, only second rate rock crawlers and newbies run MOAB and use that as their ultimate trail. Yes, it is tough. Yes, it is hard. But the sandstone rock at Moab is soft and grippy. Out west, if you want to break a 4X4 or survive a trail that has real bragging rights spend a week at the Hammers or take a trip on the Rubicon, Yes, we all have Sunday Service at the Moab Easter Jeep Safari, but Trail Ready by Jeep's definition used to be the prototype had to cross the Rubicon. (Note, the first Jeep to fail was the Liberty and only it only made across the trail due to the blood sweat and tears of DamnYourChrysler engineers stacking rocks to make the obstacles easier for "Kan't Jeep" to run the gauntlet with its independant front suspension.) Now if you build a Jeep and live on the east coast (or east of the Mississippi River) then your demon is Jellico Mountain in Tennessee. Jellico is less challenging than the Hammers and the Rubicon as far as crossing obstacles in your path, but it has one thing no trail west of the Mississippi has and that is slick, hard limestone outcroppings that are tough to drive on when dry and nearly impossible when wet. But even with a heavier demand on driver capability, Jellico can be crossed with a much less capable Jeep than you would need for the Rubicon. If you want Rubicon quality, then you need to go to the Red River Gorge in KY during the Jeep Jamboree but be prepared with a fat wallet to pay for all the carnage that will come from sliding off rock and bashing sheet metal, picking the wrong gear and blowing out part of the transmission, or simply putting driveline in a bind and snapping an axle. This trail has it all and despite not being as hard as the "10" rated Rubicon, this "9+" trail will sneak up and throw you an unexpected "11" obstacle and you are at the wrong end of a recovery line being dragged off the trail. Yes, Moab is the Catherdral for the off-roading (or 'froadin') universe, but you get your baptism at one of these four trails. Happy Froadin'! And as you can tell, I miss my moderately built Jeep TJ which was called by some a "Barbie Jeep" because it lacked that rugged character in the CJ and YJ. I would hate to hear what old Jeepers call the new TK Wrangler.

      kaiokendo misspelling of Chvrches. Its a band who purposely misspelled their name “churches” so it was easier to search online. The outro son is a riff on “Mother we share” from the band.

    Trying hard to find a cheap early 1990s 4 Runner, it getting, hard and it will only get worse as time goes on. like Mr. Regular said everybody wants these trucks. I might just settle for an Isuzu Trooper, or Nissan Pathfinder.

    • @-MORK-
      @-MORK- 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Not looking hard enough - plenty of people will give you an early 1990. The 3.0 headgaskets blow more often than a jr. high prom date.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** What Jr high did you go to? Funny story: I bought an ex U-haul 1990 Toyota a while back. The 3.0 V6 did indeed blow a head gasket, which Toyota covered UNDER WARRANTY! Apparently, they had a recall on the gaskets that was still in effect in 2007 when I bought it.
      Of course, that engine was a chunk of shit, so I yanked it and put a slant 6 with a 4 speed in it's place. Cause I'm THAT GUY, that's why. Picture it: 1990 Toyota 1 ton dually box truck with a 1973 Plymouth slant six. It don't get much more regular than that.

    • @chevyfan029
      @chevyfan029 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I had a '95 4Runner with the 3.0. When I got it, the head gaskets had already been replaced, but about a year later, we had to get a new engine because the bearings were so worn down it was about to throw a rod. Not to mention I got 8 mpg. I loved the truck, but the engine was complete garbage.

    • @VertigoGTI
      @VertigoGTI 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the V6 in mine. Waiting for the HGs to go in it soon. Will take a look at the recall paperwork to see if I can also get it done under warranty, which would be crazy.
