Oh man, I remember the TV ads hyping up Smartrak as being some kind of Skynet-level AI that would let you drive over glaciers if you wanted to. I always had...doubts.
When I was a kid my friend's mom bought a used Oldsmobile Bravada, I don't remember the year but it was one of the last ones they made with a digital dash. I remember sitting in the backseat and making fun of how high the floor was (I was a tall kid). She called my mom and made me apologize to her for making fun of her car. This video sums up Bravada owners pretty well.
I had a friend in high school with a Blazer. I lost count how many times it broke down by the end of the first summer she had it. By 150k everything bolted or otherwise connected to the engine and transmission had failed at least once.
Say what you will, but vehicles like the Aurora, Intrigue, and Alero were quite decent at the time. Compelling enough alternatives in a competitive space and very slightly more unique than the average boxes on wheels. Underperforming and average quality for sure, but good equipment, good value, decent styling, and strong reliability. The Aurora especially was pushing entry luxury at the time. It is a shame how they went, but we had good experiences with late-model Olds cars. Never really experienced these mediocre SUVs though.
Every brand that ever made an impact in the car community got the worst treatment of death from GM. Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Holden all have the worst and depressing deaths all because of how GM handled it.
This was my older brothers first car. He rolled it into a ditch not wearing his seatbelt and started to fall out the sun roof and had my cousin not been in the car to pull him back in right before it rolled over on its top it would have been a rough end. I’ve never seen another one Edit: just did a spit take cuz my brother actually did get suspended for bringing throwing stars to middle school😂😂
My parents didn't have alot of money when I got my license in 1998. I went through about 5 GM cars that ranged from 82' to 91', everything broke past 60k miles. My 6th car was a 1991 Mazda Protege with 220k miles. Everything worked and I kept it until 275k. It really turned me off to American cars for many years
That thing looks about 10 years older than it actually is. And I've googled some pictures and the front looks "off" as if it were badly repaired after a crash in ALL of them.
Back in late 90's I had friends with both Blazers and Bravada's and you could literally just grab stuff on the front of either and rip them off. The Blazer seemed particularly loose fit and barely snapped together. Just grab a turn signal and pull it off the front of the car, lol. Fast forward a number of years and I bought a well used 2 door Blazer as a winter beater and it did have great heat, great stereo, and the 4WD worked just fine, and it looked handsome in 2 door form. Stuff would fall off if you slammed the door hard enough to compensate for the sagging hinges.
My friend’s dad had a Bravada, he was a drunk who had a job he didn’t deserve. Lost it all when he banged his secretary. He was reaaaaalllllly stupid but thought he was smart. Oldsmobile Bravada.

A former boss of mine had a Blazer. His wife was very short and the first time she moved the seat so she could drive, it stopped working. He took it to the dealership and they had to disassemble the seat to see what was going on. Turns out the power cable GM specc’d for the seat was too short - when the seat was moved close to the end of its track, the cable unplugged. I’ve been trying for years to come up with a line to describe GM vehicles of this era. Your line about them displaying absolutely no ambition is perfect.

I swear everything except the transmission and core of the engine had to be replaced between 2003-2004, and some of the parts it wasn't the first replacement. I'd always insist on driving my car where we were going in addition to hers because half the time it wouldn't start in the parking lot, or would but start making a new 'sweet jesus I shouldn't drive this' noise.

I mean, these things have worm gear steering with a lot of joints. Unless it's been refreshed, the steering has a lot of slop and that's just a trait of the older, non-rack and pinion steering style regardless of who made it. He's essentially complaining an old car is worn out.

$1800 actually seems like a really good deal, it looks like it’s in great shape for it’s age, especially being from above the rust belt! Forget that it’s a Bravada, even if it were a base model Blazer it’d be worth that all day long. You could actually take the Olds emblems off and put a Chevy grille on it... there you go, instant Blazer, haha.
The leather in this one is in amazing condition considering the age and what this is worth. The previous owners took pride in it and garaged it. IDK why but I like to see ordinarily unloved vehicles that otherwise survive as junkers look somewhat good.
Same here, The other day I saw a late 80s Cavalier Z24 in near mint condition. It had Those black plastic Slats on the rear Windshield and Factory side skirts and front lip. It was actually kind of cool.
It’s actually not that hard to find one of these where the leather is in decent to excellent condition for cheap prices, Autotrader has a boatload of them. GM Leather (at least for Oldsmobile) was pretty strong in the 90s, I’d argue you’d have to be really trying to find a Bravada with torn leather
I like that too. This car may be boring and all.....but I do love the fact that it is weird seeing one today. You just dont see many Blazers of this era running around...let alone on of the re-badge siblings like this olds...especially one that is this clean.
The greatest thing about a Blazer is that by the time you're done with the payments it's falling apart and costs more in repairs than the payments were. The Bravada just cranks the debt to 11. It's a perpetual debt machine!
The saddest part of that was that these things depreciated faster than a Gremlin falling off a cliff. When he said in today's dollars "Forty NINE THOUSAND dollars!" I thought, what's it worth today? 1800 bucks. Dammmmm... I feel bad for anyone who bought these new, or even less than 5 years old
"Whether they were real Bose speakers or..." Yeah, ALL car speakers are sourced by the manufacturer and labelled with whichever formerly premium label is willing to whore out their brand the cheapest.
So I work in this field, and it's really not quite that bad (yet). There are four big Tier 1s in this area - Bose, Harman, Alpine, and Panasonic, and another two you've never heard of called ASK and PSS. System price is mercilessly smashed down by the customer, as is par for the course in automotive components, and the audio system has to compete for space with everything else they're building into cars nowadays (DEF tanks and battery packs for mild-hybrid systems are the worst) but the parts are still a lot better than base speakers, and the systems get special attention to better tuning, and the result ends up being at least good enough that unless you're really motivated, most people will live happily with the branded system and not rip it out. As for the brands, some are more involved and hands-on in the process than others are - it's not "just" licensing. The branded audio system is a good add to a new car if you intend to keep it stock for most of its life. But if all you want is a ton of bass, you'll need to just get the base system and then replace the stock speakers and head unit and add a subwoofer enclosure in the trunk for an unsophisticated but LOUD system. The branded systems are steadily getting better, and where they have the edge over aftermarket is in careful sound tuning and better integration with the car's infotainment hardware.
I know car audio and home audio are vastly different, but one of the best surround sound systems ive ever heard was a meridian 3d system inna range rover autobiography. Some companies (mostly luxury brands) actually do take the time to properly make a good system. Lexicon, meridian, bowers and wilkins, and mark levinson systems are probably the best car audio systems around if you dont want to bother going aftermarket

yeahhhhhhhhhhh you're not wrong. but to get the pitman arm out you have to take the steering box out and to get the steering box out you have to take the front diff out and to get the front diff out you either unbolt the motor and hope you have enough wiggle room to get it out, or you cut a mounting bracket off the frame. I liked anything built on that platform. Super easy to work on. And in my experience reliable. I got mine with 75k and ran it up to 180k when I sold it. I replaced the alternator once. But other than that no failures
@@thegodhoward8037 GM's divisions made a lot of great cars, when they were able to focus on their niche (luxury, performance, even economy) and not be weighed down with having to share the platform with all other GM divisions, whether that car really fit the brand or not. Imagine trying to be "sporty" pontiac, and work with a buick chassis to make a sports sedan? Of course it isn't going to end well...

I will defend this as this was my first car. In high school people couldn’t get enough to be driven around in a suv with leather seats. Yes things broke down but I still have fond memories of my first car.

I had a 99 GMC Jimmy SLT 4 door that I bought new. Drive nice, was comfortable and very reliable. I put 165,000 miles with regular maintenance and never had a problem. Check engine light never came on. Never drove a Bravada but I can say the GMC counterpart was rock solid.
The funny thing is I'm currently driving in 99 Chevy Blazer two-wheel drive four-door LT that with all the options it has someone paid $32,000 for it in 1999. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I had positraction and 3.42 gearing I had to fix a smog pump and the catalytic converter and put a new water pump. But i passed California smog doesn't have a check engine light on and currently has 261,000 MI

To put the price of the Bravada in context: you could've gotten a '99 Land Rover Discovery for one grand more. You could get an all wheel drive Volvo V70 for 3 grand LESS. You could've got a V8 Ford Explorer or Expedition, but no. YOU needed to buy the Cadillac Cimeron of SUVs because you've never read a book, and you can only cook with a microwave.
And don't ever let the master go dry. Not the tank you can see, but the tank behind it that you can't. That's a fun drive up rt 1 to the mechanic to have the abs reset
Why do you need the ABS reset? You don’t even really need to bleed it. Fill it up.. find some gravel, and slam on the brake. Ghetto brake bleeding done. That is.. assuming all of the reluctors still work-which most of them don’t on GM vehicles this age. So it’s just a regular brake bleed then and black electrical tape for the ABS and TCS lights.
@@Bartonovich52 it would not bleed once it was dry. You could get a little pressure built up with the car off but none with it on. It had something to do with the booster/abs cylinder and had to be reset with a scanner
Ooo that’s a good one. The previous owner allowed the brake pads to wear down to metal shims. It got new pads and rotors like 2 months ago because I would’ve died this winter lol

It’s a Blazer with a silly grill. All those late 90s S-10 based GM SUVs (Blazers, Jimmy’s, Bravadas) still run with 200k+ and the best part is you can’t tell the difference between them anymore cause all the body panels are rusted away or fell off. My 98 Jimmy Envoy was running strong at 230k when the NY road salt finally rusted the frame through. The Bravada has some funny looking body panels but was based on a great suv platform

About once a week in winter my Dad's blazer wouldn't have heat. He'd pull over and pop the hood and I'd hop out and punch the top of that thing and the heater would turn on.
@@Sp1n1985 Repair? When the universal joint snapped (the second time), I yanked the drive shaft out and threw it in the trunk. My dad then put the Blazer in 4wd and drove home on the front wheels. Then he bought another truck. GM quality.
I’m always amazed that GM in the 90s managed to be consistently worse than British Leyland. At least BL cars had the good grace to rust into nothing so we could all forget and move on.
I had a '91 Bravada. My grandparents bought it a year old when the guy who bought it couldn't make his payments, they drove that thing to around 90k miles, I'll be honest it was a lot nicer than the 96+ model years. My parents got it in '08 with like 92k miles on it, they drove it all the way up to 2012 and put another 40k miles on it. I learned to drive in it and I put a good 1,000 or so miles on it before it rusted too bad that the state finally said "No you can't drive this anymore" It sat in my driveway for the next 4 years rusting further until the state finally said "We're going to fine you until you get rid of it from your yard." Sold it to pick a part for $800. Was it a great car objectively? No, not really, it was literally the 80something Jimmy my mother had years before that but with 2 extra doors and a bigger engine. But I grew up in it, and had so many milestones in it, so I'm fond of these things, specifically the first gen ones. Been looking for another first gen to replace the old one for a while now, but they're all either beaters or heavily modified. Lol

Funny story that sparked my memory from seeing this video: I don't know if this is a worse or better fate for this poor Bravada, but near me there's this auto salesman. Really small place near the center of town. And in the middle of the gravel parking lot there is this neon green Oldsmobile Bravada. Now this isn't any normal Bravada, the previous owners of the car had taken a normal Bravada and removed the bed cap, hand painted the new color, got custom rims, and even hand painted the words "Travada" onto the side of the vehicle. Truly it's one of the worst modifications I have ever seen on a single vehicle. Even worse, it's on a Bravada. Great video though, love these reviews on the most hated cars haha.

Blazers and Bravadas are common sights in the west Georgia area. Usually in metallic b r o w n. These are still desirable because they're larger, cheap, disposable, and "most" people don't like to be thought as living beyond their means after the unpleasantness of the Great Recession.

I actually quite like the generation that came a while later that shared a platform with the 9-7x, Rainier, Trail Blazer, Ascender, and Envoy, but these never seemed to last here. They were often traded and sold off to multiple owners and rotted in our harshly salted conditions, or beat to hell and back as they were passed down to kids. Once vehicles like the X5, Q7, ML, Escalade, Navigator, and other big name, big money tanks hit the market, these things disappeared real quickly here. Now? Well, I don’t think folks have learned; we’re all still diving headfirst into outrageous car purchases.

I have a 1999 Bravada, I bought it off an older guy in my neighborhood. He kept it clean and didn’t drive it much. The only thing wrong was the actuator for the rear glass hatch was out. Got it for 2,200 and wouldn’t trade it for anything
I worked in sales at a Chevy-Olds dealership in 1998 and can confirm everything you said. I don't recall us ever selling a 99 Bravada, but I do recall one customer who would come in like clockwork to complain about still hearing the tinkle of broken glass in his liftgate after it had been repaired multiple times. I just watched Groundhog's Day again a few hours ago and now I feel like I'm reliving that time over and over again. Maybe it's time to fire up some Shawn Colvin, "It's time for a few small repairs..."
Y'all need to get a hold of a first gen Chevy Aveo. It's a bigger piece of crap than the Bravada. The engine is anemic and the steering and suspension are sloppier than my handwriting. You need to floor it to get on the highway.

My 6th car was a 1991 Mazda Protege with 220k miles. Everything worked and I kept it until 275k. It really turned me off to American cars for many years
That thing looks about 10 years older than it actually is. And I've googled some pictures and the front looks "off" as if it were badly repaired after a crash in ALL of them.

Second gen Bravada grilles didn't even fit properly when they were new.
Back in late 90's I had friends with both Blazers and Bravada's and you could literally just grab stuff on the front of either and rip them off. The Blazer seemed particularly loose fit and barely snapped together. Just grab a turn signal and pull it off the front of the car, lol. Fast forward a number of years and I bought a well used 2 door Blazer as a winter beater and it did have great heat, great stereo, and the 4WD worked just fine, and it looked handsome in 2 door form. Stuff would fall off if you slammed the door hard enough to compensate for the sagging hinges.
My friend’s dad had a Bravada, he was a drunk who had a job he didn’t deserve. Lost it all when he banged his secretary.

A former boss of mine had a Blazer. His wife was very short and the first time she moved the seat so she could drive, it stopped working. He took it to the dealership and they had to disassemble the seat to see what was going on. Turns out the power cable GM specc’d for the seat was too short - when the seat was moved close to the end of its track, the cable unplugged.
I’ve been trying for years to come up with a line to describe GM vehicles of this era. Your line about them displaying absolutely no ambition is perfect.

I swear everything except the transmission and core of the engine had to be replaced between 2003-2004, and some of the parts it wasn't the first replacement. I'd always insist on driving my car where we were going in addition to hers because half the time it wouldn't start in the parking lot, or would but start making a new 'sweet jesus I shouldn't drive this' noise.

The leather in this one is in amazing condition considering the age and what this is worth. The previous owners took pride in it and garaged it. IDK why but I like to see ordinarily unloved vehicles that otherwise survive as junkers look somewhat good.

Same here, The other day I saw a late 80s Cavalier Z24 in near mint condition. It had Those black plastic Slats on the rear Windshield and Factory side skirts and front lip. It was actually kind of cool.
It’s actually not that hard to find one of these where the leather is in decent to excellent condition for cheap prices, Autotrader has a boatload of them.

The greatest thing about a Blazer is that by the time you're done with the payments it's falling apart and costs more in repairs than the payments were. The Bravada just cranks the debt to 11. It's a perpetual debt machine!

Oldsmobile Bravada: For the guy who stores boxed wine in his wine cooler.
"Whether they were real Bose speakers or..." Yeah, ALL car speakers are sourced by the manufacturer and labelled with whichever formerly premium label is willing to whore out their brand the cheapest.
So I work in this field, and it's really not quite that bad (yet). There are four big Tier 1s in this area - Bose, Harman, Alpine, and Panasonic, and another two you've never heard of called ASK and PSS. System price is mercilessly smashed down by the customer, as is par for the course in automotive components, and the audio system has to compete for space with everything else they're building into cars nowadays (DEF tanks and battery packs for mild-hybrid systems are the worst) but the parts are still a lot better than base speakers, and the systems get special attention to better tuning, and the result ends up being at least good enough that unless you're really motivated, most people will live happily with the branded system and not rip it out. As for the brands, some are more involved and hands-on in the process than others are - it's not "just" licensing. The branded audio system is a good add to a new car if you intend to keep it stock for most of its life. But if all you want is a ton of bass, you'll need to just get the base system and then replace the stock speakers and head unit and add a subwoofer enclosure in the trunk for an unsophisticated but LOUD system. The branded systems are steadily getting better, and where they have the edge over aftermarket is in careful sound tuning and better integration with the car's infotainment hardware.
Yeah the Bose speakers in GM vehicles were garbage in the late 90s and early 2000s.
I know car audio and home audio are vastly different, but one of the best surround sound systems ive ever heard was a meridian 3d system inna range rover autobiography. Some companies (mostly luxury brands) actually do take the time to properly make a good system. Lexicon, meridian, bowers and wilkins, and mark levinson systems are probably the best car audio systems around if you dont want to bother going aftermarket

I liked anything built on that platform. Super easy to work on. And in my experience reliable. I got mine with 75k and ran it up to 180k when I sold it. I replaced the alternator once. But other than that no failures

I had a 99 GMC Jimmy SLT 4 door that I bought new. Drive nice, was comfortable and very reliable. I put 165,000 miles with regular maintenance and never had a problem. Check engine light never came on. Never drove a Bravada but I can say the GMC counterpart was rock solid.
Literally the only difference is the grill and body kit and bravada has awd and Jimmy has 4x4.
The funny thing is I'm currently driving in 99 Chevy Blazer two-wheel drive four-door LT that with all the options it has someone paid $32,000 for it in 1999.
I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I had positraction and 3.42 gearing
I had to fix a smog pump and the catalytic converter and put a new water pump. But i passed California smog doesn't have a check engine light on and currently has 261,000 MI

To put the price of the Bravada in context: you could've gotten a '99 Land Rover Discovery for one grand more. You could get an all wheel drive Volvo V70 for 3 grand LESS. You could've got a V8 Ford Explorer or Expedition, but no. YOU needed to buy the Cadillac Cimeron of SUVs because you've never read a book, and you can only cook with a microwave.

Fill it up.. find some gravel, and slam on the brake. Ghetto brake bleeding done.
That is.. assuming all of the reluctors still work-which most of them don’t on GM vehicles this age. So it’s just a regular brake bleed then and black electrical tape for the ABS and TCS lights.
@@Bartonovich52 it would not bleed once it was dry. You could get a little pressure built up with the car off but none with it on. It had something to do with the booster/abs cylinder and had to be reset with a scanner

It’s a Blazer with a silly grill. All those late 90s S-10 based GM SUVs (Blazers, Jimmy’s, Bravadas) still run with 200k+ and the best part is you can’t tell the difference between them anymore cause all the body panels are rusted away or fell off. My 98 Jimmy Envoy was running strong at 230k when the NY road salt finally rusted the frame through. The Bravada has some funny looking body panels but was based on a great suv platform

Did he try punching it? That metal cylinder on the passenger side of the engine bay that's part of the HVAC system. About once a week in winter my Dad's blazer wouldn't have heat. He'd pull over and pop the hood and I'd hop out and punch the top of that thing and the heater would turn on.

@@Sp1n1985 Repair? When the universal joint snapped (the second time), I yanked the drive shaft out and threw it in the trunk. My dad then put the Blazer in 4wd and drove home on the front wheels. Then he bought another truck. GM quality.

I had a '91 Bravada. My grandparents bought it a year old when the guy who bought it couldn't make his payments, they drove that thing to around 90k miles, I'll be honest it was a lot nicer than the 96+ model years. My parents got it in '08 with like 92k miles on it, they drove it all the way up to 2012 and put another 40k miles on it. I learned to drive in it and I put a good 1,000 or so miles on it before it rusted too bad that the state finally said "No you can't drive this anymore" It sat in my driveway for the next 4 years rusting further until the state finally said "We're going to fine you until you get rid of it from your yard." Sold it to pick a part for $800. Was it a great car objectively? No, not really, it was literally the 80something Jimmy my mother had years before that but with 2 extra doors and a bigger engine. But I grew up in it, and had so many milestones in it, so I'm fond of these things, specifically the first gen ones. Been looking for another first gen to replace the old one for a while now, but they're all either beaters or heavily modified. Lol

Funny story that sparked my memory from seeing this video:
I don't know if this is a worse or better fate for this poor Bravada, but near me there's this auto salesman. Really small place near the center of town. And in the middle of the gravel parking lot there is this neon green Oldsmobile Bravada. Now this isn't any normal Bravada, the previous owners of the car had taken a normal Bravada and removed the bed cap, hand painted the new color, got custom rims, and even hand painted the words "Travada" onto the side of the vehicle. Truly it's one of the worst modifications I have ever seen on a single vehicle. Even worse, it's on a Bravada.

Good lord, it feels like an eternity since the last time I’ve seen one of these lethargic dinosaurs on the road, but there’s also something disturbingly nostalgic about seeing these old junkers around still
Blazers and Bravadas are common sights in the west Georgia area. Usually in metallic b r o w n. These are still desirable because they're larger, cheap, disposable, and "most" people don't like to be thought as living beyond their means after the unpleasantness of the Great Recession.
@@12ealDealOfficial They were a big hit in my locale back in the late ‘90s and for a short time in the ‘00s. I actually quite like the generation that came a while later that shared a platform with the 9-7x, Rainier, Trail Blazer, Ascender, and Envoy, but these never seemed to last here. They were often traded and sold off to multiple owners and rotted in our harshly salted conditions, or beat to hell and back as they were passed down to kids.
Once vehicles like the X5, Q7, ML, Escalade, Navigator, and other big name, big money tanks hit the market, these things disappeared real quickly here. Now? Well, I don’t think folks have learned; we’re all still diving headfirst into outrageous car purchases.
The last time I actually remember seeing one was in the elementary school parking lot circa like 2008 or something

I’ll be completely honest, that’s my Bravada and I’ve never had a second thought about it. Never knew that my DRL’s turned off for my turn signals either until the release of this video.
Honestly I sort of like black mirrors on a white car, as long as there’s some other black trim scattered about.

I have a 1992 Bravda and never really noticed until I recently had it painted and they painted the mirrors lol.
Uhhh... Body color mirrors really isn’t all that common in 90s SUVs and trucks and such. Hell for the longest time you didn’t have the chrome options either. It was regular mirrors or power mirrors. The end.
OMFG my friends parents had a red one with gold wheels. They would each find an excuse to leave a little early each morning so they could drive it for the day. It got so bad they bought a 2nd one, at least it was the green on silver wheels.

once you start treating it as a blazer or Jimmy, you're not doing too bad. it's not a luxury item, but it is a 4.3 with 4wd. I mean, how bad could it be? a gas gauge and heated side mirrors don't really matter.

I bought a 99 Chevy Blazer two-wheel drive four-door LT with posi traction and 3.42 gearing for $1200 six months ago 👍🏻 also bought and lived it's life on San Diego this thing is rust free. A little bit of TLC and i passed California smog.
It's awd not 4x4 it can't do off road. Well it can but it's not going to last long it should be turboed and dropped I'd take a bravada over a subaru dyke car
I have a 1999 Bravada, I bought it off an older guy in my neighborhood. He kept it clean and didn’t drive it much. The only thing wrong was the actuator for the rear glass hatch was out. Got it for 2,200 and wouldn’t trade it for anything

I worked in sales at a Chevy-Olds dealership in 1998 and can confirm everything you said. I don't recall us ever selling a 99 Bravada, but I do recall one customer who would come in like clockwork to complain about still hearing the tinkle of broken glass in his liftgate after it had been repaired multiple times.
I just watched Groundhog's Day again a few hours ago and now I feel like I'm reliving that time over and over again. Maybe it's time to fire up some Shawn Colvin, "It's time for a few small repairs..."

Y'all need to get a hold of a first gen Chevy Aveo. It's a bigger piece of crap than the Bravada. The engine is anemic and the steering and suspension are sloppier than my handwriting. You need to floor it to get on the highway.
