I had a neighbor who had one of these when I was a kid. He kept it chalked in his driveway busted for YEARS. I LOVED that truck he would let me and all the neighbors kids sit in it and play on the CB when we would play outside. I built models of it and even painted my Tamiya Bruiser the same color LOL. When I graduated high school he sold it to me for $100 bucks (after giving me a C note as a graduation gift lol)!!! Its in my garage to this day, my neighbor passed away a few years ago and now i'm obligated to keep it forever. RIP Smitty she's still running!!!
I grew up around them, owned many and so didn't all my friends. ALOT still own them and are fully built to this day. I unfortunately don't own any of the 6 or so I once did.
I have a 2nd gen 4runner that im starting a similar build on. He gave me some really good ideas to do that I wasn't thinking about. I'm originally from San Diego where prerunners are king but very expensive to build. Then I moved to the high desert of cali & got more into the trail/rock crawling world witch I found was a lot cheaper rig to build for a newbie & now I can't get enough. I love that TERRA crew is showing a different side of offroading. 👍👍
Found my twin!! Im running a 89 4Runner with a trail gear 4" SAS kit up front and rough stuff kit and 63's in the rear. been on a 6 year down after SAS (had 4 kids) just got it smogged and road worthy this year!!!! @10:30 found the perfect solution for a rear bumper thank you...never thought of coming from the side!! was going to grab a marlin crawler rear bumper but with the rear shackles i think they will hit that even though it isnt as steep of an angle for the mounting brackets, but square tube and from the side it is.
I have my Dads 1988 4Runner with a manual and a 22RE. I’m currently doing All Pros 4 inch SAS swap. The 4runner has been in my life since I was eight years old. I learn how to drive it at 11, took my behind the wheel at 18 in it. My dad gave it to me 3 years before he passed away. It’s like a member of the family. I’ll be at the hammers with it in a year.
Absolutely love seeing rigs like this. Built to work, all the time and money went into making it go and not show. 35s on a yota when JKs/JLs “need” 37s (that’s sarcasm)
This is sick, love the Toyota content. I have an '85 with the same paint as this one. About to hit 260,000. Motor was originally a 22re but swapped to a 2LT 4cyl turbo diesel about 10 years ago. Nowhere near as built out as this beast, but good for what I like to do.
86, my best friend's mom had a 4 runner. We would tie like 3 gt Snow racers to the back and ride them as she pulled us across the fields in winter. My buddy now has two he's using to make one solid one....
My dad had an 87 pickup for forever built for rock crawling before he moved to the mid west and got into an accident with it. He kept the motor, trans, diffs, roll bar, skid plate and rock sliders. When he had it it had close to 110k miles and then we bought another pickup that was an 86 and we rebuilt his motor and and put it in my truck and I’ve put close to 100k miles. We’re still working on kitting it out to be an ultimate rock crawler again. We just don’t have a lot of time but it’s almost done😎
I’m on my 3rd 22re equipped truck . The first two went 389k and 297k and both were still running strong when people crashed into them and totaled them. One got rear ended really bad on the freeway and the second one was totaled by a drunk driver while it was parked on the street. I can safely say they are the best engines I’ve ever had even more reliable than my newer Tacoma. The one I have now wasn’t the original motor to begin with, the previous owners son bogged the truck and threw a rod so this one is a junkyard swap but I ended up rebuilding it .020 over but mostly stock . Running it in my 86 4runner IFS. Maybe some day I’ll do a solid axle swap like this guy did but for my use IFS is good. This IFS with torsion bar system is pretty damn strong as it is. As long as you use Toyota OEM CV axles it’s hard to break.
My first vehicle is a 1989 Toyota pickup 4x4 ifs 22re just put a 4-5" lift running "33s stock motor on 281,000 miles first time taking it to KOH this year
iv got my 88 4runner currently my project truck/daily and delivering pizzas in Montana with the stock 22re 5 speed w56 trans love this truck currently at 308k + miles. bought it in CA in 2015 and did a full rebuild in my bed room in 2019 on the motor when i blew the head gasket heading to Tahoe for a ski trip lol. Has had a few starting probs with the resent -40 temps we have had up here but nothing a block heater hasn't fixed XD
I bought a 89 Toyota pickup with the 22re. I slapped a 3 inch body lift and a set of 35 inch all terrains I found used for 300 bucks. I drove that truck EVERYWHERE. The 22re had 295k on the ODO, but the ODO hadn't worked for a few years. It leaked oil from every where it could leak, so I would change the oil with straight 30 weight, and 2 quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer (I was 18). I sold it over 10 years ago and ran into the guy that has it now, still with the same tires and still hasn't rebuilt the engine🤣🤣
What chassis is this on? These are solid axle out of the factory, At least over here in Australia. Love the old solid axle lux/4runners, I currently have a ln106 dual cab hilux with an L67 supercharged v6 swap (buick motor but we get them in holden commodores) In the middle of converting from the toyota 5 speed to a th700.
Had a 22re as my 2nd truck bought it with the odometer not working at 280k miles, daily drove and disrespected the piss out of it for 5 years god knows how many miles were on it 😂 only replaced an alternator and a battery in the time I owned it, miss that thing!
Dont have a 22R but i got that 6.slow, picked up a 91 baby blue yoda that was rusted the fuck out in a field with 215k on the odo. fixed somerust and shes still doing 75 on the highway with 260k on that clock baybeee. American racing wheels and 31" yokohama AT's, still rusty (;
I had an 88 Toyota pickup back in the day bought her with approximately 140k for the next 5 plus years she was my toy literally and my daily driver hands down the most reliable truck I ever owned I beat the snot out of that truck every weekend with my buddies in the woods and she always got me to work Monday morning I fell in love with the truck modified her some and always had fun with her I cried the day I sold her fast forward 15 plus years now and I finally got an old Toyota truck with antique plates and living the good life and I’ll never sell her in fact I plan on giving it away one day..that old 88 had over 300k when I sold her and that’s smiles and miles
I'm shocked you asked what the locking hubs were?! Especially coming from a guy who is able to eye a coilover for a nanosecond and instantly tells you everything about it!
@@MrJamesLuz most, but not all, though. I still fuck with terra crew though. There needs to be more real prerunners like yall showcase in the s.e region of the us
Sick I had a 91' hilux surf imported from japan to canada and I did a 3" trail-gear SAS and rear leaf swap on 35" KM2's. All my friends quit wheeling and it sat for 4-5 years and my woman made me sell it to pay bills. 4months later my brother in law gets a bronco2, calls me and tells me I need a rig after all the work I did to my yota only to sell it haha. Biggest mistake I ever made. Picked up a 4door geo tracker to build a budget family rig tho. 300$ yo but they aint no yota....super cheaply made
270k miles and i still drive it to the trail and back home. And its not a 5minute drive its over 80miles and i trash the shit out of my truck at elbe hills in washintgon state. do a vid on it! i would love to see it
very cool story man, rip smitty
Great story. Great memory.
James my hero. After a decade and seven kids is out there with his build. Sick
Dad had an 85 for years, literally grew up in it and last year he finally gave it to me, in the process of a restoration but they’re such classic 4x4s
I grew up around them, owned many and so didn't all my friends. ALOT still own them and are fully built to this day. I unfortunately don't own any of the 6 or so I once did.
"What's this assembly" -" that's a manual locking hub" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I had a 79 toyota truck with a 20r. it had well over 400,000 miles on it. it ran like a sewing machine too. the 20r and 22r engines are bulletproof!
I was expecting the got married and had kids but not 7 of them props to you man I know the struggle and I’ve only got two.

Gotta love these 1st and second gens plus the 22re super reliable motors, I'm part of the 3rd gen gang but full respect for this awesome build 😍👌
Awesome rig gonna take alot of cool upgrades off this one truck looks sick and ready for adventures

Love the rock crawler stuff lately
that is a bad ass 4runner, dreams come true

Love this build. I had an 88 3.0 with 309k running great when I sold it to my neighbor.
I've been building an F150 prerunner for the last 3 years, but these Yotas are magic. Bought an '87 last month :)
Took my 2 month old twins in mine doing light offroading last week. Slept through it. Making family memories already in my 87 4runner.
most beautiful example of exactly why you never want powder coat chassis components i have ever seen right at 2:13 .... The shackle attachment point.
You just can't top that!!! So SICK!!!
That was a special build, rad dude with a solid epic truck!
Im glad everyones liking these now been in love with them since i was a kid now 22 with a 88 3.4 swap loving this video
Killer Runner! I have a 88 4Runner w/300k miles, plan on doing the same upgrades!
Very nice 4R, simply and functional, good job.
Amazing Yota!
1986 4runner 22re 422.000 miles just rebuilt at 398.000 love it.!!!
I’ve got a 85 built very similar. Bringing 3 kids up in the off road world in this classic chassis 🤙
Uh oh. The desert prerunner boys are learning the 4x4 ways.

I have an 86 turbo straight front love it so much!
Awesome build clean to the point
Love it!
I'm from central Indiana, just got my 85 4Runner going!!
My dad and I are rebuilding a 85 and it’s so cool
Holy shit what a dope build, the cameras are genius.
sweeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 300k 22re , I take it on 12 hour drives often. I don't change the oil or anything
Rockcrawling junkie here, I love all your content. I wish I would have kept my 4runner that nice, but you can’t loose with 42’s.
Great content makes me regret turning my 85 into a raisin lol
They work so good though. I feel it would be hard not to beat on and use to its full capabilities
I wished I never got rid of any of mine as well. Had a few nice Nissan's yrs ago now that I had built ('89-90 Hardbody)
Living the dream 🤙🏽
Thats insane ! Dope rig
My first vehicle is a 1989 Toyota pickup 4x4 ifs 22re just put a 4-5" lift running "33s stock motor on 281,000 miles first time taking it to KOH this year

My 87 pickup (22r) is about to roll past 200k. But my buddies 93 pickup (22re) is pushing towards 400k. Both still going strong!
150,000 miles on hilux og owner never changed the oil or did anything and not a knocking sound to be found 22r super reliable
Lets see this thing perform

Only thing missing is seeing this 1st gen flex! Next mod for this one - 3.4L conversion with TRD Supercharger
I have a 1985 4Runner given to me by my father-in law days before he passed. Seriously looking for an idle air valve for it. Mine has a 22REC motor.

1985 was the last year for solid axles for toyotas in America. 1986 on up it's all IFS.

@@tougetime8509 I have a 1985 4runner SR5 5 speed with the 22re . love it.
Just finished an engine swap on my ‘87 4Runner I went 3rz-fe. What a beauty. Before I did a ‘92 with the same engine.
Fuck yea! Digging the yota love!!
I hope to show you my rig some day. I really want to spend a few weeks out west this year. It's just a long haul from Arkansas. Dope video as always.

482k miles on my 92 toyota 2nd clutch but still drives great

We usually ask questions on things for the viewer that might not know what it is. Sometimes though we really don’t know what it is haha
