The guillotine was actually a massive improvement on better humane executions. The idea was a giant blade cam down like a clap of thunder, the head was removed and the man was no more. It was seen as a way better form of execution than the previously used hanging and "drawn and quartered" executions, which ironically enough were also considered more humane (the hanging not the latter) was more humane than even the executions before that one.

what's creepy af about decapitation is that if there's is any conscious left, gotta be super shocking if the person recognises that they're not attached to themselves anymore...
Before the guillotine, beheading was done by sword or axe wielded by a person who, depending on skill level and strength, could miss the neck, or not cut completely through. This meant that a condemned person could be struck multiple times before the stroke that caused death. Each impact being extremely painful to the recipient. Comparatively, the single, accurate impact of the guillotine blade is more humane.

Decapitation causes the blood pressure to drop to zero instantly, which makes you loose conciousness also instantly. A lot of people experience dizziness, or even pass out when they stay sat down for a long time and stand up too quickly, because the blood pressure in the head drops when you rise quickly. So it is safe to assume that blood pressure dropping to zero in 1/100th of a second makes you incouncious before you can feel any pain. Blinking, jaw and eye movements are just reflexes due to the fact that even if your not councious anymore, your cells still have enough energy to keep living for a few minutes (for example, the heart generally stops beating only 15 to 20 minutes after death). Tests conducted on mices showed that brain activity stops about 15 seconds after the beheading, but loss of conciousness occurs in the first seconds. So, with the adrenaline, and the delay necessary for the pain signal from intense pain receptors (Which use non-myelinised nerve fibers, with a very slow signal speed), you probably would'nt feel a thing before blacking out.

the guilotine is a continuation of a much much older device from medieval history, but that itsself came initially from an execution method known as death by plank, in medieval flanders this was certainly a punishment for rape, or rather for claimed rape, which could only be stopped if the girl in question willingly intervened and decided she wanted to be with him, so essentially it could easily be an affair that causes it, (understandable since rich families tried to dissuade their children from marrying for purely love) this method involved a plank held between two beams on which the head rests above it comes another plank held between those beams, then they hit this plank with a hammer until the neck breaks or even until a messy decapitation is achieved
You know, sometimes I wonder why humans can be so evil at times. And then I remember that we have had the capabilities to be evil bastards for a *long* time.

Gibeting was actually not exclusively for men, in Québec, Canada, there is the legend of "La Corriveau" which is a woman who was sentenced to hanging by martial court for the murder of her second husband and then displayed in a gibet, and has become a local urban legend
It's only one case, and it's an urban legend so maybe (probably) it didn't even happen, so you can't use that to claim that "Gibeting was actually not exclusively for men". Simple logic.
Not sure if any women were subjected to gibetting, but nonetheless, women were rarely executed in barbaric ways and spared many punishments solely because they’re women. I find it interesting how modern feminism doesn’t address the lack of accountability when it comes to breaking laws and the fact that men suffered far more in general than women throughout history.
There was a test done using the rack and a pig leg, the joint didn't come apart, the bone broke. Apparently tendons and ligaments have a higher tensile strength than bone.

SOME SAY BURNING AT THE STAKE WOULD BE MOST PAINFUL, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE THE BRAZEN BULL, VICTIMS SLOWLY ROASTING TO DEATH, THEIR SCREAMS CHANNELED THROUGH PIPES IN THE BULLS SNOUT TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THE SCREAMS WERE THE BULL MOOING. IT WAS SO TWISTED, THE INVENTER OF IT WAS PUT IN IT TO DIE ☠️ FOR COMING UP WITH SOMETHING SO EVIL AND INHUMANE
For the National Razor, my history teacher once said that the French never bothered to sharpen the razor each use, so it became more of dull and blunt that it never successfully cut off the head and instead just became a very heavy blunt object that the executioner had to keep lifting the blade up again
It's false actually, but my own teacher (and i'm french) did not know better. The blade was resharpened every now and then, and for the first 2/3 years looked like a yet the mecanism of the machine made that almost useless. given the way it cut its clients in half, guillotine used to rip off heads, much more than cutting them clean off : The first 10 cm was about cutting then the resistance offerd by the corps and the fact it was still made the rest of the work like ripping off to the right, since the blade was shaped that way, like a scythe. Lots of example of fellas staying attached to the machine AFTER it ripped their head off
I’ll probably end up having nightmares tonight even though this is animated this stuff still really happened. The guillotine has always given me major creeps.
It's been documented, and proven repeatedly, that the guillotine often didn't cut the head clean off and took two sometimes three drops to get it done.
Then the blade sharpener is to blame. In that case the blade should be sharpened greatly and then the blade sharpener that had one job and failed should then be decapitated for his lack of skill.
@@VladimirBlarpoh come on lmao they deserve a lesser lethal punishment for just failing their job like jail time or i dont know, decapitating their arm?? I dont know lol

What's funny is that originally in China it was only done to corpses, or people so high on opium they couldn't feel it; as the Chinese believed any damage to the body or disability carried over into the afterlife. They didn't do it to living people until after the communists took over.
Ah yes, I'm always so embarrassed by a slap, WHEN MY HEAD IS NO LONGER ATTACHED AND IM LITERALLY DEAD. That couldn't at all have been just her skin turning red BECAUSE IT WAS JUST SMACKED. 🤦🏿♂️
I think I heard that recently some scientists beheaded rats that were wearing EKG setups. They reported that in about 3-4 seconds, conciousness was at about 50%, which meant they were no longer thinking/feeling.
Here in West Yorkshire when you talk about a Gibbet, what you are referring to would be the Halifax Gibbet which was an early version of a Guillotine, which had a thick block of wood that instead of a thin razor sharp blade mounted along the edge of the of the block at an incline, allowing for a shearing action, the Halifax Gibbet had as its blade a very large and heavy axe head with a curved edge to spread the cut across the full width of the neck of the condemned person and the Gibbet was mounted on a scaffold placed on a moor side cross roads at the top of a long uphill climb from the centre of the town.
The Oubliette has to be the absolute worst. The condemned would be locked in a tight, casket-like cage that was centrally located directly under the castle in the chambers where the restroom waste would constantly be dumped down into. Left down there in the pitch black to starve and dehydrate to death while being constantly showered in human fecal waste. To this day, they still discover bones of the condemned that suffered this fate.

I have a copy of The Hangman's Diary, about the Nuremberg head executioner Franz Schmidt during the 1600s. He wrote down every execution he did in that book and he was quite fond of using the Katherine's wheel so much he kept a smaller replica of the wheel on his side. Franz carried out his profession very well, he executed 361 people during his career. I like that book cause it gives history buffs like me a glimpse into history. But their means of torture and execution was quite horrific to read.
Also about decapitations, it is also roumoured that when the exicutioner held the it was not to show the head but to hold the head to show the decapitated person the croud before dying.
"fun" Fact: Last executed via guillotine in france was Hamida Djandoubi on 10. September 1977. Same year as the first Star Wars movie was in the cinemas
Tbh out of the execution methods of the middle ages, i would prefer to go by guillotine. Nice and instant compared to the Rack, breaking wheel, brass bull, ect..
Read the faithful executioner. It's a diary of a 16th century executioner in Germany. Fascinating read about a civil servant who took pride in his work.
Reminds me of the ancient story of the brazen bull. A man invented this extremely sadistic way to execute someone by putting them inside a metal bull with a fire underneath and cooking them to death, and their screams inside would sound like a bull because of the acoustics. He showed it to a king, who had the man be the first person executed by it, because he created such a cruel invention.
i don’t know why but the thumb screw scares me the most. i think it’s because of how painful it was and the fact that it didn’t involve ripping apart your body which meant that you couldn’t escape the pain being inflicted on you.
Punishments are not about punishing the individual its about Psychological impact that it causes on the victim and witnesses, "do that and this will happen to you" thats why castration and removing of arms/legs was thing, even slapping a child on the butt (which im opposed to because children learn from parents and that kid will grow up to beat its too children) is relatively effective
I can’t watch this whole thing right now because I’m at work, but I hope you mentioned keelhauling. Where dudes on pirate ships would get tied up and dragged under the boat. Drowning and sharp barnacles ripping your skin sounds like a nasty way to go out.

the guilotine is a continuation of a much much older device from medieval history, but that itsself came initially from an execution method known as death by plank, in medieval flanders this was certainly a punishment for rape, or rather for claimed rape, which could only be stopped if the girl in question willingly intervened and decided she wanted to be with him, so essentially it could easily be an affair that causes it, (understandable since rich families tried to dissuade their children from marrying for purely love)
this method involved a plank held between two beams on which the head rests above it comes another plank held between those beams, then they hit this plank with a hammer until the neck breaks or even until a messy decapitation is achieved

Fais longtemps jlavais pas entendu celle la
Not sure if any women were subjected to gibetting, but nonetheless, women were rarely executed in barbaric ways and spared many punishments solely because they’re women. I find it interesting how modern feminism doesn’t address the lack of accountability when it comes to breaking laws and the fact that men suffered far more in general than women throughout history.

For the National Razor, my history teacher once said that the French never bothered to sharpen the razor each use, so it became more of dull and blunt that it never successfully cut off the head and instead just became a very heavy blunt object that the executioner had to keep lifting the blade up again
Ayooo 👁️👄👁️
It's false actually, but my own teacher (and i'm french) did not know better. The blade was resharpened every now and then, and for the first 2/3 years looked like a yet the mecanism of the machine made that almost useless. given the way it cut its clients in half, guillotine used to rip off heads, much more than cutting them clean off : The first 10 cm was about cutting then the resistance offerd by the corps and the fact it was still made the rest of the work like ripping off to the right, since the blade was shaped that way, like a scythe. Lots of example of fellas staying attached to the machine AFTER it ripped their head off

What's funny is that originally in China it was only done to corpses, or people so high on opium they couldn't feel it; as the Chinese believed any damage to the body or disability carried over into the afterlife. They didn't do it to living people until after the communists took over.

Very good job fellows!! Congratulations.
The guillotine during the French Revolution was actually a massive improvement on better humane executions.

The people that operated these torture devices sound like the people who needed to be tortured by them
Reminds me of the ancient story of the brazen bull. A man invented this extremely sadistic way to execute someone by putting them inside a metal bull with a fire underneath and cooking them to death, and their screams inside would sound like a bull because of the acoustics. He showed it to a king, who had the man be the first person executed by it, because he created such a cruel invention.
