When I realized the painting and a tune based on the orchestral composition inspired by said painting was in Signalis, I had to come hear to listen to the original.
This is an absolutely first rate performance and recording. Bravo to the orchestra and Edward Gardener. I must add that the video matches the very highest standard. Congratulations to all!
15:20 My favorite moment of this piece. To me, it represents finally reaching the isle, stepping out of the boat, and setting foot into the dark unknown that is the Isle of the Dead. Rachmaninoff was such a master of musical suspense and buildup 😍😍
An extraordinary performance of a stupendous piece of symphonic atmospheric music... The sense of mystery, desolation and fatality of death, is masterly evocated here: in this interpretation, the idea of almost no hope that permeates this fantastic work of Rachmaninov, is a marvelous tetric picture. Terrific orchestra and conductor!
This is one of Rachmaninoff's most atmospheric, evocative works, but also one of his least dramatic (in terms of contrast) and melodic. He was fond of using the "dies irae" in his works, and here he had the perfect opportunity to make the most of it, creating a dark, dire, pessimistic landscape devoid of hope. I seldom return to it, but each time I do I try to enjoy it more, and each time I find that I can"t; I can only appreciate its success in depicting what the composer meant to.
This is actually my favorite of his next to his 2nd concerto. I feel few songs sound as hellish as this. Many metal bands would be hard pressed to put this much power and infernal majesty into a song
Wonderful music, beautifully played. edit: his writing for the cellos and double basses throughout the turbulent middle section is absolutely wonderful.
This Toteninsel I very late have become aware of, thanks to friends on TH-cam. They led me here. I have no intention to die, and this music is also beautiful for all us living. As I understand all music is for the living, not the dead.
And yes "dies irae" is constantly there, even if it is a more human version of dies irae, like if we have come to a conclusion of what this is all about.
Gracias.
Clara andrada della calle. She has studied with Emmanuel Pahud, one of the best flutists in the world. She plays concertos of Ibert and Nielsen with the same orchestra on YT. Don't miss and tell me...
YA, in my besta German, “ACH DU LIEBER, MEIN SCHATZ”!!! WOW! “Isla del Muerto”, Isle of the dead!!! Outstanding outstanding Rachmaninov & gorgeous performance! I’ve really come to greatly love this orchestra!! Their faces are almost like “family” to me now! This fabulous music - you can see in your mind’s eye (ear?!) a boat’s journey towards a (Hellish!) island where no one really wants to go to (a painting on a record album!)!!! A one way journey! As a Born Again Christian in JESUS CHRIST, as the BIBLE teaches, I won’t go to a place like this! Jesus SAVED ME from this! But I have to admit, I so greatly love this music, & maybe I shouldn’t! Sorry pastor! The soloists were most excellent, even beautiful “Gladys” on flute! I loved seeing that Asian/Oriental man sitting in a front row, close his eyes, to let the awesomeness of this music sink deep within his soul! I loved the “play & sway” of the musicians as they did their thing! The camera work too was excellent as was the clarity of the video! What a tremendous treat to hear this unbelievable music “invade” my soul too! I’m 82 now, & more in love with Rachmaninov than I’ve ever been!!!!! Thank you GOD for the great great blessing of MUSIC! Und “Gesundheit”!
I find an amazing similarity/commonality of spiritual experience and outlook; plus my reactions to this particular work of Rachmoninov -- who I place very highly 'mongst the truly outstanding composers .Frankfurt Radio is up there with the top orchestras .

Wohl das dunkelste Werk der gesamten Musikliteratur. Geniale Vertonung des Gemäldes von Böcklin.
My very alltime favorite piece of music in superb performance!!! Take a look at the audience! Astonisched they are! tremendeous!

A stupendous performance. Every phrase is shaped with the dynamics carefully planned. Bravo to all the orchestra and it's conductor.
Achtung! Achtung!

Damn, I just now realized die toteninsel wasn't original to Signalis. Makes it better tbh.
I met Edward Gardner a year ago, he's such a charming person!

Exactly. I pick it up and put it down, always wondering...
It is the dark side of humanity for those humans without souls, who will take up their residence where they belong.
Wonderful music, beautifully played.

That was a fine performance. I'm glad to have heard Isle of the Dead after so many years.
Great holes secretly are digged where Earths pores ought to suffice, and things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl.
I was at this concert, bravo!! Amazing
Perfekt kontrollierte Aufführung dieses mysteriösen Meisterwerks mit angemessenen Tempi und ohne überflüssige Dynamik.
+notaire2 Was um Gottes Willen soll "überflüssige Dynamik" sein?!
+SatanAteMySocks "ohne überflüssige Dynamik" meint "dynamisch sehr stabil" hier.
@@notaire2 "Dynamisch sehr stabil" und "ohne überflüssige Dynamik" sind synonym unsinnig. Aber so lieben wir unseren Kommentator.
My beloved Edward Gardner at his best! Some piece of music this is! Respect!

I wear no mask.
To be honest, this piece is much better than it's adaptation in Signalis (I loved that one too though)

See that painting of Arnold Pöcklins 'Insel der Toten'.This painting was inspiration for the music.

What a horrible mistake. I am so glad that world has no other problems.
