  • In this installment of Car Shop, I start a new series to show the entire process of how I run an Operating Session. To begin with, I fix the issues that caused problems during the last op session and I bring new cars up to my standards. So we take a look at standardizing freight cars and fixing defects from the last op session.

Hi Eric, another really useful video. Hoping to start building my own layout here in the UK once we've completed a house move. This video has given me some food for thought for when I start getting my stock out of its boxes. Looking forward to your new series. Lee

Hi Eric. Totally agree with your standards system. All freight cars on my layout get Kadee couplers, metal wheels and then weighted to NMRA standards before they go on the layout. With that I have very reliable running and, as you said, keeps the guys interested in operating. Eventually they all get details and weathering, but the three basics happen first. Happy modelling. Yes, that's a great process to have in place. Happy modeling to you as well!

Eric.. Just getting my feet wet in HO.. I too found height issues with a few pieces of rolling stock. I too got the same washers as you use but, I do one more step.. I found I had some friction on the washers after adding them. So, I use a bit of Kadee #231 Greas-em before putting the truck back on.

Thanks for the tip, that is a great idea! I have not had any issues like that yet, but that is good to know for when something like that comes up and I can't figure out why a truck isn't moving!

Great video thanks for sharing. I need to do some maintenance on a few of my cars especially with couplers and other minor repairs. I have RIP track on my layout and also a car shop in the making as of now. I have an older style car card system I'm using at the moment until I get JMRI set up. It works and right now I just shuffle some cards and pick what I want and send it out. Anyways thanks again for sharing and take care.

You bet, thanks for watching! Sounds like you have a really good system set up for repairs and for your ops.

I use really small lead shotgun shot on flats, bulkhead flats and gondolas by super gluing them on the underside of each car. I’m sure steel shot would work as well

That's a great idea - I have seen that used on some cars that I have bought before.

Why didn't you show us how you removed the boxcars coupler attachment/ holders????? When you replaced / or adjusted couplers.

Sorry, I guess I figured that was a more common thing to do.
