Cutting the last eye off a new fishing rod - Customizing production rods to fit your needs

  • The first time I did this was accidental: I had a rod tip get caught in a closing door and snap. To salvage the rod, I just tried it without the last eye and actually found it to be even more useful for certain styles of fishing. So when I had trouble finding a lightweight 6'-0" rod with a short butt and decent stiffness that wouldn't break the bank, I figured I would try out this concept on purpose. I do like the Teremar inshore series rods from Shimano, but they are more popular in the southeast as opposed to St. Croix which seems to be more popular in the northeast. Can't wait to pair this with a lightweight reel and jig all day next season!
    As I mention in the video, I have no rod building experience, this is probably not the right way to modify a rod. Please understand I'm not telling you that you should do this to your rod. I'm just sharing my experience of having done this a few times that it's worked out for my use and the type of jig fishing I now mostly do from a kayak.

    I take my rods daily to the boat as my marina's not the safest. I like light gear and buy 6.6. They also fit nice inside my pickup. For blackfish I like a little more backbone. So I bought 7's and cut them down to 6.6 so they fit as well. I'm in love with these cut 7's. I've pulled double digit Black's off the bottom with ease. Absolutely love the cut 7's performance.

      You are so right my friend, cut 7’s are the sweet spot for blackfish I think as well. Still fun catching shorts but able to get those big ones out as well. That’s what I use now for blackfish, I think it measures like 6’-8” exactly but yeah it’s amazing how much backbone it has. Some people like that sensitive tip to feel the bite better but I prefer it flex less when I go to hook set. This rod is def going to be on the shorter side of what I’m used to but I’m really trying to pair it with a super light reel. Thanks for the feedback Joe, it’s nice to hear you do the same!

    Cool video Peter! I can't even count how many rods I've snapped the tip off of over the years, and this will be very helpful in giving some extra life into some old equipment!

      Haha same man! I try to be careful but accidents happen and I probably wasted a couple rods in years past not trying to salvage them. Glad you found this helpful man, hoping to get some other "maintenance/projects" done but it's been a very busy winter so far and I got a lot of home projects that are a little higher up on the priority list 😁hope your having better luck than me doing fishing-related stuff this winter.

    i just did the same thing to my ultralight uglystik gx2 I found the action so fast I could not get a proper hook set. EVER. So I just cut the first eyelet down to half and re-mounted it. Thanks for the video.

      Nice Josh! It’s cool to hear that it worked for you as well, that’s exactly my problem with a rod that’s too fast at the tip that when you look set it wobbles too much before you really hook them good so when you remove that it’s much more solid when you set the hook. Thanks for sharing !

    Nice customization Peter! I like shorter rods too, especially for kayak fishing. You got the two rods to match up almost identical. Good time of year to start getting everything prepped for salt water 2022.

      Thanks Bob! I really like the shorter rods on the kayak as they just seem to be easier to maneuver. I will say the one thing that’s tricky with them is trying to move the fish from one side to the other around the bow… it’s easier with a slightly larger rod like 7’ but it’s something you get used to and landing fish is easier with a 6’. Idk still kinda messing around with different types and sizes but super excited to try this out - thanks again for letting me know!

    Use a rag to pull tips off. You won't scratch up the eyes, won't burn your hands and you'll get better pulling power. I recommend heat glue/eye heat stick glue. You don't need the gun. Just heat the glue stick with a lighter and rub it on the rod tip. It's cheap. It will be easier to change out than epoxy. You need way more heat for epoxy to loosen and will probably burn the rod. Also the heat stick glue sets immediately as it cools. You can fish the rod in 5 minutes

      Good tips, thanks! That’s a great point about how it’s going to be harder to change out that tip now…Yea I def could have done a better job, does that glue stick stuff really hold? It seems like just a regular cheap glue stick which I feel isn’t so strong but I guess it works

      @@PeterRanieriII I order the glue stick made for rod tips from mudhole. The material looks the same as the glue gun stick just fatter. Yes super strong. You're not pulling it off without a heat gun or lighter.

    I do the same thing if I want the stiffer end for blackfish, and fluke rigs. I think I get better hookset and more control of the jigs. I think I feel the jig better without the soft tip giving way.
    More ppl do this than one would think.

      Nice Robert, yea that's exactly why I do it as well. I didn't realize that so many people do this but your right, it seems more common than I thought. Wonder why they don't make a type of production rod that is already like this.

    I have the same rod in a medium heavy 7 foot extra fast action I love it I’m thinking about making my 7/6 carbon shield a bit shorter to have a stiffer tip

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s cool to hear you love this rod. You use it for bass mostly or blackfish? Not a bad idea for the 7.5’ carbon shield, just as long as you don’t mind if you lose some casting distance with it, but if in a kayak you really don’t have to cast too far

    Sorry to comment on a year old post mate but I just snapped a 7” rod unintentionally 😂. I’ve go about an inch above one of the eyelets, was thinking of just cutting about this and calling it a day. The end eyelet of the rod wouldn’t fit due to the thickness of where it snapped. Is this ok

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t mind at all! Totally understandable and this has happened to me at least twice, I’ve left the eye as is in this situation and just cut down any remaining rod tip beyond the last eyelet and those rods work fine, I still use them today. What I would say is that the line does tend to get wrapped a little more around the tip when you leave it like this tho but if your conscious of it, it’s really no big deal.

    my problem is that the bottom half of the rod is too soft, there is nothing I can do to make it better

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I hear ya it won’t work with all rods. That’s why this works best when you do it to an extra fast action rod. Extra fast means it tapers quickly at the tip so your getting a thicker rod blank in the bottom half
