  • The phone call we received on the evening of 3rd May 2021 made our hearts sink: A gravely injured female elephant had been sighted on the Chyulu Hills. Her right hind leg was shattered, likely as a result of falling in the rocky terrain, leaving her unable to walk. She had resorted to shuffling along in a seated position, struggling with every little movement. To further compound an already tragic situation, the female in question was the mother of two calves. One was a young, milk-dependent baby, the other was much older, around seven years of age.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

It makes you wonder if the mother’s injury and the calf’s injury occurred at the same time. To bad the calf was too young to stay with the sibling. The poor sibling lost its mother and baby sister.

Hey little guy, my knee is crummy too, besides, you're WAY cuter than me. I so wish that I could give much more than I do to The Sheldrick Trust. Thanks to all of you kind people.

It's so heartbreaking to read about Elephants in the Wild like this one that was still Mother two young elephants-- all living animals must "Pass On " eventually--- Thank you for making this Mom Elephant's "Journey's End " a much easier one for Her-- She does not know what happened to her two Youngsters--- but all of us here know they are well taken care of-- and Somewhere in the Great Beyond--- Someone else knows it.

It would have been Better of you could have said the mother too. I don't believe there no chances even in a desperate situation and Life has to be always the winner. I know It isn't easy but noone said it would have been. I never find comfort in death, on the contrary.... Josie

Trabajar con animales es maravilloso pero también muy descorazonador, tener que tomar esas duras desiciones de eutanaciarlos enferma un pedazo de tu alma pero con el tiempo se va sanando por qué hay que seguir en la lucha por ellos.

What a tragic start to this beautiful elephant's life but thankful he was found by your wonderful rescue trust. What would they do without you? What a little character ❤️❤️❤️
