- The rescue of this yearling calf proved to be one of the most challenging the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's team has ever undertaken.
The calf, a female, with a hugely swollen back leg at the knee joint, had been spotted by a Kenya Police Reservist three weeks previously, who reported to the relevant authorities. For 21 days he had been monitoring the calf with the help of conservancy rangers as they tried to find the mother, dead or alive.
Having failed in this it was decided to contact the Community Development Manager of the Northern Rangelands Trust who got in touch with the Kenya Wildlife Service on the 29th October, who then alerted The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust that a rescue was needed.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

I looked for this rescue video after I saw Ishaq b at Voi and Sammy told me about how he was involved in her rescue. I feel lucky to have met all three of the keepers in this video. along with Sammy I met Abdi when I was at Ithumba and Adan at Umani springs. Sammy mentioned they got stuck in mud and she had lived off eating mangos but I hadn't realized the extent of the difficulties they encountered. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!

What a sweet baby!
It appears they like baby-talk just like puppies do, that it draws and cheers them. The second baby came over in response to it, for a "kiss," or the notion of one anyway. Very sweet. These Men are highly esteemed by us. Thank you for all your fortitude. With the unexpected night away, I would imagine that admin had to call in extra keepers to tend the babes, being shorthanded as a result of the stranding. Your work is filled with adventures. Thank you!

Consider how much it takes to get to location to rescue, get the baby ready for transport, unload and get baby settles and stabilized. It's really amazing work.
