    Hey everyone! So a year and a half later, this video puts me in a pretty awkward spot. I framed it around looking into whether or not the RNG that imglower was getting with Power Shock was typical. On January 26th of this year, imglower was accused of sexual harassment and subsequently banned from the Paper Mario speedrunning community, and I believe the claims completely. I don't think that this warrants taking down the video as the main point was to demonstrate the inner workings of part of Paper Mario, but I also think that if I'm going to be keeping it up, I need to share with you all what he's done. Also, please don't use my comments section as a place to discuss the validity of the claims. This isn't the place. www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1srulb2

    Ha, yeah, I never used Power Shock in Paper Mario when I was a kid. My brother and I always thought that the only point of powering up Watt was to make her basic attack stronger, since her special attacks seemed worthless to us. Granted, most of our strategies involved simply outdamaging the opponent anyways - I think the most complicated strategy we tried was charging the jump attack repeatedly for an absurdly strong Power Bounce against Huff N Puff, but then that was only after fighting him normally failed. Multiple times.
    Anyways, love seeing video essays on one of my favorite games, and this is a great breakdown of one of the more, imo, underwhelming moves in the game. It makes me wonder if the stronger move, Mega Shock, follows the same kind of code or not.
    Great job :)

  • @thederpysage

    its unfortunate because Watt is sooooo good otherwise only for Power Shock to be so weirdly complex. I always knew something was screwy with it. If they wanted it to work like that why not just use the Run Away action command bar to begin with?

  • @fernando98322
    @fernando98322 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    The Power Shock function seems to be a copy paste for the running away mechanic, random value in a bar (0 to 100) that goes up and down and when it stops running away is only successful if your mashing bar ended higher.

    • @Zalied
      @Zalied 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i was going to type a comment wondering hwy they did this given a simple select random number and increase by X for a weighting factor can get similar results (higher weighted values while still being random) easier and with less code. But this makes so much sense just stealing other code is even simpiler.

    Wow, you're not kidding, this is incredibly frustrating knowledge. Even if the developers purposefully implemented it this way because they knew how strong status effects were, why would Power Shock specifically work differently than other status moves?

    • @erickpoorbaugh6728
      @erickpoorbaugh6728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm guessing a lazy programmer just copy-pasted the "run away" mechanics then took out the "OK" marker, without realizing that this would yield an uneven distribution.

    • @ElTaitronAnim
      @ElTaitronAnim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@erickpoorbaugh6728 I feel like the "laziest" option would've been to copy-paste the other status moves like Dizzy Shell or Air Lift. Copy-pasting the "run away" bar as it is would mean the invisible "OK" could start by going up or down (if I'm not mistaken), but Power Shock ALWAYS goes up. So any way you slice it, some kind of effort had to have been put into it, for some reason.

    • @tifforo1
      @tifforo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So according to this, if you fill the bar to the following percentages, you have this chance of it working
      Less than 16% - Cannot work
      Fill to 16% - 0.99% chance to work
      Fill to 23% - 7.92% chance to work
      Fill to 30% - 14.85%
      37% - 21.78%
      44% - 28.71%
      51% - 35.64%
      58% - 42.57%
      65% - 49.5%
      72% - 56.44%
      79% - 63.37%
      84% - 65.35%
      86% - 79.21%
      93% - 86.14%
      98% - 93.07%
      100% - 100%
      So if you fail to reach 79%, even by a little bit, your chance to succeed in shocking the opponent is at most 56.44%. Filling it to 78% only gives you a 56% chance to succeed. And filling it to 22% gives you a less than 1% chance to succeed.

    I'm curious after watching this, but how does an enemy's natural resistance shock factor into this? I couldn't find Bowser's but for example a Gloomba's is 90% and a Koopatrol is 75% (odds of success, that is). Does this determine how high the Power Shock bar can actually go and THEN it applies what you explained in the video?

    • @JCog
      @JCog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      So to be honest I'm not sure specifically what the percent refers to at a code level for mashing action commands, but the gameplay effect is that a lower percent means you have to mash more to actually fill the bar. Hallway Bowser's is so low that even with frame-perfect mashing you can't fill the bar completely. Once the action command is over though, all that matters is how full the bar is.

    This reminds me of a principle I learned in my own software classes. Pseudo-random number generators produce values based on a "seed". In order to be less predictable, many systems will draw numbers from the PRNG and do nothing with them, typically based on time or user input or something similar. Some naive fools say "why not throw away a random number of values?", to which we get something very similar to this outcome: because of how PRNGs work, and the fact that you're getting your "random" numbers FROM THE PRNG, the values actually become significantly MORE predictable when you do that, since there are values that will never be used and values that will be reached in multiple ways.
    The details are different, but the fact that each starting value leads to only a small subset of final values, and the fact that it seems like an overcomplicated way to make things "more unpredictable" only to make them more "samey", is pretty similar. (Here it's clearly caused by the "avoid overflow" code, where it tries to stay within 0 and 100.)

      I'm not sure on the reasoning, but Mega Shock does work differently. With one enemy, it actually does work exactly how you'd expect with how full you fill the bar relating exactly to the percent chance of success. This also holds true for multiple enemies, but the difficulty of the mash is the average of the difficulty of all enemies on screen.

      @alexstewart9592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Enemies do have status resistance, but it works a bit differently than in most games - the stronger their resistance, the more mashing you need to fill the bar. This particular version of Bowser has such a high resistance to this particular move that completly filling the bar is impossible even with frame-perfect mashing, but for weak enemies it is not that hard to guarantee success if you are good at mashing.

      This game runs at 30 fps and accepts one set of inputs per frame, so perfect mashing is 15 presses per second (alternating pressed/released), and that still isn't enough to max out the bar. Have to remain at 1 hp in order to have the benefits of mega rush.

      @@FracturedStaffOfArmadyl ah. Ok seems like a bad trade off. Especially against bosses. You're almost guarenteed to get hit at any boss. Or even antiguy. If the enemy goes first even once it's a restart.
