  • @annefrank125
    @annefrank125 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +695

    I would like to comment that their current use of AI doesn't necessarily goes against their philosophy in Lain. See, what's going on in Lain isn't a blunt "This is terrible, technology will f##k us all and we're dumb to rely on it", it's more of a fairly realistic "experiment" where the author thought of what could be some consequences for such relliance on technology and the philosophy flourished from that point on. It's not necessarily a negative thing, it's a comment on something that has it's downs but at the same time has a mysterious enigmatic nature which makes us, humans, thirsty for it's knowledges and it's something that could have it's benefits depending where you're coming from.
    Both the people scared about the damages of technology and the most radical transhumanist enjoy Lain, just like how the book 1984 is often claimed to be about anti-capitalism or anti-socialism depending what you interpret ouf of it.
    That aside, yeah, the anniversary isn't good at all.

    • @dirgeofthedawn
      @dirgeofthedawn 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +90

      Totally agree with this sentiment. One of the core messages of the anime *is* the recognition of just how much power technology has over us. It is entirely within the ethos of the anime to acknowledge this.

    • @declaringpond2276
      @declaringpond2276 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What? But 1984 was LITERALLY written by a socialist. It's not anti capitalism or anti socialism. It's anti authoritarian, he wrote it to warn other socialists about how their governments could be infiltrated by strong men too.
      Also people aren't afraid of AI, they're afraid of unregulated AI that corporations use to screw over people to maximize profit. Like in the case of the actors strike, those companies refuse to drop their socalled "right" to recreate the actors likeness using AI for aslong as the company breaths. Do you not see how insane that is?
      The other common problem is AI "art" that is trained on STOLEN material.

    • @Logoslab2
      @Logoslab2 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      100% agree. Overall I'm wildly interested in AI. Hell, one could even interpret Lain herself to be one, as a being born of the Wired. To me, it's another branch of research into non-human intelligence - just like attempting to communicate with dolphins or aliens. It may be a bit chuuni, but the cool factor just hasn't worn off for me. Despite that, the inclusion of a Lain chat-bot felt sterile and uninteresting. AI is more useful than dolphins or aliens, but as a result it has become both a major business decision and point of contention. Look at AI art and how - despite the impressive nature of the technology - it garnered so much hate. For good reason too! Even with the usefulness of AI, we're still very far away from a general intelligence. The intrigue of non-human intelligence is not there yet.
      So, rather than making a Lain that can't even pass the Turing test, they should have aimed higher and sponsored the discussion surrounding the technology. Host some kind of competition in the name of Lain, for people to make strong philosophical arguments, demonstrations, or media for or against the new technology. Give winners the special merch instead of tying it to a boomer NFT game, maybe drop a new exclusive Blu-ray set for winners. Use the influence of Lain to inspire more similar works directly, and through those works we can all love Lain.

    TH-cam on its way to give me something pretty informative and cool once in a blue moon. Anyway, here’s my rambly comment:
    Even as a fan of Lain and all of the other series these guys have worked on (especially Yoshitoshi ABe, I’ve collected some of his stuff physically…and a lot of it isn’t cheap), this really is just kinda sad and makes me feel bad for Yasuyuki Ueda. Like, i know Ueda finds all of the new Ai work fascinating and it’s cool to see him enjoy it, don’t get my wrong…but it really feels like there’s a disconnect from him and us as fans because of the fact a lot of us are just in a “Yeah…it’s neat…I guess” sort of mood in comparison to his enthusiasm on it. Clearly some work went into all of this but…I dunno, I don’t feel anything for any of it outside of the ABe Merch and sadly that isn’t enough to push me into getting into all of this for some raffle that I may or may not get anything out of anyhow.
    Also, uhhh…man, that NFT stuff feels kinda like a light slap in the face to the fans if you ask me. In my opinion at least, it’s literally just an NFT scheme with a Lain skin thrown onto it and it comes off as predatory and soulless. I’m also not someone who supports NFTs or anything of the sort, though, so maybe it’s just not for me for that reason, I dunno. I never understood the appeal of them in the first place.

      I mean, the issue is how this AI hype is people projecting their own fantasies into it and ignore its inherit reality, that as this stage of things AIs are exploitative and work purely on copying and modifying existing works by mixing and matching them together to creat the illusion of something new, lacking the human element of transformation and inclusion of new ideas.

    • @nyodesu
      @nyodesu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@shizachan8421 I agree. In a way, people are just kind of using it in some…odder ways in my eyes, almost like it’s wish fulfillment too. But yeah, Ai is rather limited when you try and use it in a creative sense, the biggest example being art. You can notice imperfections like extra fingers on a person, warped parts of an image that make it look unnatural, things like that, and there’s of course the issue where Ai can only create so many different styles. Meanwhile, human artists don’t have that limitation, if they can draw it, their style for something can be whatever they want it to be. I also just feel that there’s a conceptual limit to Ai that isn’t an issue for people since they can come up with whatever they want and create it as it’s something visually definable enough, I’m sure if an Ai could replicate a specific concept a human artist can create or not. Never underestimate what a human being, their brain, and a drawing tablet or piece of paper with a pen or pencil can do.
      In a way, it feels like…a war between human artists and Ai at this point in time (though I’m putting that in a VERY over dramatic way) and makes me wonder when there will be a time where we can truly no longer tell what was human-made and what was done by an Ai. As someone who is a VERY amateurish artist who’s been out of the game for a long time, it certainly will be interesting to see where that leads.

      Ethical issues with current models aside, what's being sold isn't good for anyone who wants to be hands-on with their work.

    Well, I guess the aniversary stayed true to it's roots. If Lain's about how the advancements in technology fundamentally changed human nature and relationships, seems fitting that Its anniversary and creator would also embrace this new era of AI as a way to worship technology itself.
    Though perhaps, as opposed to the anime, our future with technology and AI is one were it overtakes us, with us being part of it. Instead of the technology helping us reach the next stage of human evolution through the transhumanist cybernetic fairy-tale, we are the ones doomed to aid the machine evolve by giving it our flesh and ideas. By letting machines interact with other humans through algorithms and variables, by inputing them our work, our art and our creativity to process and output something their own, and by creating an environment where computers become an integral part of our lives.
    Everything just at the inexpensive cost of our own individuality.

      Opposed to? That's what happens in serial experiments lain, too. Eiri's just delusional and thinks his manmade horror is the next step in human evolutuon.
      I don't understand how you can be this pretentious and still completely miss that it's dystopian, not utopian.

    • @henshicode8901
      @henshicode8901 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dogmendogmen Oh no, I never said it was supposed to be something utopian. I'm sorry if it sounded like that. And before anything else, at the end of the day I think Lain is just an artwork that's there to be interpreted and pondered about.
      Without going into any kind of political agenda, personally, I believe SEL it's ultimately a fiction piece where its creators wanted to tell a story that shows us a possible future where techno-transhumanism IS a thing, and how that could affect people.
      And the way I see It, the anime doesn't necessarily try to paint it as a bad or a good thing. It just welcomes this reality and tells a story about how people can either attain a better understanding of themselves and their reality or just go crazy about it to the point of worshiping it, or thinking that they could use it to become gods themselves.
      What I pointed out in my previous comment is just how, in the real world, it doesn't seem to be a balanced relationship as it is in the anime. In fact, it's the other way around. Technology seems to be using US as a means of evolving itself, instead of people using it to improve (evolve) themselves and their lives. Which, of course, it's just a silly figurative speech, as I'm sure you know computers aren't able to fully build and operate themselves (yet).
      But well, of course, I could also be wrongly misremembering some things as it's been quite a while since I last watched it. Feel free to keep the discussion going though, because as you can probably see, as a Lain fan I quite like to talk about it.
      Lastly, I'm sorry if the pompous and fancy speech made me sound a bit pretentious. English isn't really my native language and the only experience I had with organizing my thoughts in an actual discussion was through English essays lol

    • @dogmendogmen
      @dogmendogmen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@henshicode8901 Sorry, you see a lot of people who took away it being pro-transhumanism, I thought you were saying that. You're saying it makes states that technology fundamentally changes human nature, but makes no judgements as to whether that's good or bad.
      I'm sure as with everything, you kind of see what you want to see in it, but I don't think there's a single thing in it that would suggest it's good. I can't think of a single character that uses The Wired to understand themselves, unless you mean Lain finding out that she's not a real person and is doing what she was created to do-which again, she's not actually human. We're only told that The Wired is a good thing, everything they actually show us ends up being bad.

    • @henshicode8901
      @henshicode8901 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@dogmendogmen Yes, you could say people see that what they wanna see in about every opinion and their views in life, and honestly I think that's precisely what makes life itself interesting. That's what makes our individuality, makes us human, opposed to the AI algorythims I first spoke of. It's a brilliant thing that what people see and understand, is different and based on their subject experience in life.
      Although, whether or not they are able to accept and adopt new challenging ideas and concepts that can shake their core beliefs is another thing. The unknown territory can be scary, and new inventions can lead to terrible consequences if not carefully dealt with, of course. Regardless, I do think that trying new things is what gives birth to wonderful creations and Ideas.
      Now, what we do with those things its what ultimately matters. Nothing is intrinsically bad or good, per say. As I see, what we make out of the things we create is what can really do good or bad in the long run.
      If you're eager to understand this anime's plot regarding technology in either a good or bad light, I think Lain's could lean a bit toward that same concept. Even if its atmosphere is a bit ominous, through technology I believe Lain shows us how fundamentally lonely and helpless humans can really get. Something that I can see Lain herself understanding really early on. And although in our society, the current practices and uses of technology and the internet itself might have influenced and become the cause for the loliness epidemic nowadays, I believe when those tools first were made available to the public was with the intention to helping them communicate, connect and interact with those far away. To build forums and communities to help each other over long distances, simply because what we had at our reach wasn't enough.
      Now, looking at the anime and in parallel, our current reality, what have they done and acheived through the use of technology has done any good in the end? Should we separate technology from humans and their lives or completely adopt it? If we adopt it, should we let it create and make its own decisions for us, or should we use it to help us shape our own decisions? Should we use it to augment and eliminate our own limitations or should we use to fix those things that fundamentally makes us?
      Well, you tell me.
      Either way, technology is both a fascinating and scary thing. Something that I'm sure the entire creative team behind the anime was well aware, to the point of basing the entire plot, atmosphere and visuals around this duality.

      But at the same time bringing Lain to "life" in a very basic way given out limited, yet astounding AI models can't be ignored for how much it plays into her presence both in "The Wired", the actual internet, and everyone who remembers her. I don't care for the project, but It's really interesting to reflect on it as a thought piece of where we are now vs when the show aired.

I've seen a few other videos that had somewhat low view counts on lain before I found out they blew up to massive popularity one day. People are constantly discussing Lain and making AMVs on it because it's just that trippy of a show visually with like a bunch of mixed messages of how people felt at the turn of the century into this technological age. Lain has a massive community even if it's not as big as some other fandoms I suppose. I'll honestly be surprised if someone doesn't know about Lain if they know a bunch about anime. It kinda overshadows other series, and I totally get there isn't really very many similar shows to Lain. I kinda wish more people tried exploring anime a bit more. The SEL franchise playing with morally grey technology is an exciting prospect, if written thoughtfully, but it feels weird when the tone of the anime is very critical of the future of technology, and the creator in the present isn't very critical of what its become at all. i would love to see a new Lain figure for the 25th Anniversary. The old ones are so damn expencive. Still hope Goodsmile Company would do a figure of her in the future, or even better, making a Yoshitoshi Abe Collection with the main characters from every show or something.

    It makes me kinda sad to see nfts and a chat bot all about lain. Kinda like the original message gets blurred

    You can see everyone involved in Lain somehow now started to try to capitalize on the anime, not only the creators like Yoshitoshi Abe, but the band responsible for the opening theme is also really really active recently, that's a good thing cause the band sounds really good, but in the other side, seeing the creators of the anime wanting to make money with those superfluous things, is just an oxymoron, wasn't the whole idea of the anime to show that tecnology was bad?

    They included a definition of what an animation cel is. Which I guess is the inverse of me asking for the definition of an NFT? It’s bits of color all the way down.
