Versys 650 Fuel Pump Replacement

My Versys is now running correctly after stranding me by the side of the road with nothing working to get it moving again. While it wasn't running the fuel pump wasn't priming for any longer than a second. I tried with and with out the fuel cap on to eliminate vapour lock but still not priming correctly. I've now waited for the second hand pump to come in, a new o ring and now its time to get it all fitted. This replacement fuel pump is my best guess for now and only time will tell if it was only this or I have other gremlins.

A while ago, I removed the fuel tank to change the air filter. When I disconnected the fuel line from the pump, the fuel didn't stop flowing until I completely removed the tank and turned it upside down to prevent further leakage. No draining preceded it, which I will do next time. However, I noticed that this is not the case here. Does the pump have a check valve inside to prevent fuel from flowing out? If so, do I need to replace the fuel pump? (By the way, today it suddenly stopped working, and I'm quite sure it's the fuel pump's fault.)

Yes the fuel pump assembly has a valve that closes when the fuel line is disconnected. I was lucky and found a full assembly second hand so it was an easy swop. I’d suggest the same if your valve isn’t working as you need to take the tank off for a lot of maintenance jobs.

Hey mate glad you got her going. I know we had discussed the vapor lock but after the fuel pump change makes me also wonder if the fuel filter may have been clogged up, noting when you pointed out how black the original was. The fuel filter is on the bottom of the whole assembly may want to have a look at your original one.Not sure of your mileage or how the UK fuel is, manual says replace at 24 kilometers. BTW I got my Versys about a week ago, great bikes and a lot of fun. Enjoy your vids Cheers

In my manual it didn’t specify replacement intervals for the fuel filter but I did replace the entire assembly including the filter. I’ve since found although the manual says the pump assembly isn’t a serviceable part. You can get aftermarket filters and pumps. So I may see if I can renew my original pump assembly.
