Ian, I know I'm sounding repetitious, but boy, you make it look so simple. Oddly, the part that thrilled me the most was when you took the small brush and (without hesitation or fumbling or shaking) drew that roofline so beautifully. It never looks like your brush is overloaded, but you make those confident--and long--strokes and never seem to run out of color. Ever video makes me come away wanting to practice one technique or the other. I so appreciate you and your work. Have a wonderful holiday!
Hi Evan, I'm glad you found it helpful. One thing is I treat the brush like a 360 degree tool. I load the brush but then twist it so I keep having a fresh edge of paint to put down. All the best for the holidays to you as well.
Overworking and trying to add detail to a painting that lacks the fundamental quality for shapes and values is definitely my biggest problem. Every time I try to do a lose painting style I find myself smothering it with completely unneccesary detail resulting in very messy painting. Thank you for great advice and demonstrating it on this absolutely amazing painting.
Good one Ian, as always. Every artist wants to get a "good painting", at least once in a great while. The key may be to "simplify", as the theme of this vid says, but that may not be as simple as it sounds. A good small painting is better than a bad big painting, if less impressive as to size. And it might actually sell, if that is your goal for it! The great landscape artist Scott Christensen once said in a vid of his I have on DVD, that "big is one thing, but big And ugly is a totally other thing"! Bigger paintings seem to need more detail but that may suck the life out of them. One way to get over that is to paint outdoors, you don't have much time to get too detailed or you shouldn't. And you should paint quite small, much smaller than your studio work which you may spend days on, all the while draining the energy from them, by overworking. That is easier said than done. If you are really terrible at painting in your studio, you may not want to face the ridicule of painting outdoors and have someone, make an unkind comment. That usually never happens, but it may be my own experience, and not someone's whose paintings really do suck. LOL. But seriously, even if you have done bad paintings in the studio, (and Everyone has boxes of them) look at them again and try do them much smaller; say take a 16x20 and do the same painting on an 8x10, with a big brush, one that feels awkward in your hand, not matter which hand you use, eh, Ian? You may find the "key" to making a simplified painting that way and give you the experience to translate that into a larger work, even back to the original size of the painting. It's a "trick" or method you can try in the comfort of your home, without the need to go outside and suffer the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune", or rude comments from passersby!! LOL. Actually, a little hike to a secluded spot helps too, with or without the pack mules, carrying your art supplies and camping gear!! :D Regardless, have "fun" painting, indoors or out, even though that is the very last thing you should ever expect from the painting experience. But it is a "worthwhile" endeavor, much better than mindlessly scrolling all day on your cell phone, for example!! LOL ;D
As a comic artist/ animator trying to get back to my classical training roots, these tutorials are absolutely magnificent, just loaded with gems and nuggets of amazing wisdom. Thank you for these amazing videos 🙏🙏
I love that your subject is just a typical American house amid trees -- something many of us see/walk by/drive by without giving the experience a second's thought or creative exploration.
As a self-taught artist, I deeply thank you for these videos. In this channel I've found all the answers to my questions about composition, plus you're left handed and that makes everything look more comfy, at least for me 😅😅
Ian...thank you for a very straight forward explanation on thinking before painting and simply blocking out shapes to "uncomplicate" a scene!!..great job!!
Hello Ian. I am a fan of Jay Maisel, the photographer. Many times he has recommended to study paintings in order to understand composition. That’s how I found you and bought your book “Mastering Composition”. Very interesting and helpful. Now I want to learn how to paint 😅 You are a very inspirational and great teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and work with the world.
"...nuances within the shape that do not disturb the shape itself....created modulation (in the grasses) that do not interfere with the sense of what those big shapes are in the first place...not getting bogged down in detail..." COLORS @7:48. Thank you for naming the colors! Whew!
I so appreciate these lessons, Ian! As well I want you to know that my partner, dog and I traveled from our home in Nova Scotia to North West River in Labrador by road last month, a trip we've made many times. Due to weather issues the ferry from the Gaspe to Baie Comeau was canceled and we had to make a 800 kilometer detour to cross the river at Quebec City. The weather going and coming was hideous but I had just received your book on composition before we left and spent the trip looking at the magnificent landscapes with fresh eyes. Even though for our six days of traveling all told we did not see a glimmer of sun, beauty abounded. As artists, (in my case both visual and as a writer), our discipline and practice wakes us up to what is in front of us. What a gift!
Hi Jan, you know I have wanted to do that drive along the south shore of the St. Lawrence for decades. My father, a painter, did it once and he had so many great pictures. I shall go one day. Thank you for reminding me! All the very best.
Anytime I look at your painting process, it inspires me so much and I start painting on my own!!! Today's work of yours is adorable! I love how you turn simple shapes into real pieces of nature!
I do find myself often getting bogged down with details especially if I work on a painting for too long in one setting so this video, as well as many other videos you have posted, keep me focused on the shapes and values. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge.

I think this perspective on painting applies to many endeavours. As a software engineer I like the analogy of thinking in "broad strokes" and filling in details later, although it does take me effort not to get lost in the rabbit holes of the details.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thank you, Ian, for making these videos. I enjoy them tremendously. My little daughter is into drawing and painting, I try to convey little bits and pieces of advice I learn from your channel to help her improve her skills. All in a subtle and playful way of course, given her age (6) I think it's more important for now to let her explore and paint with nonchalance.
Hi Ian ! Thank you for another much awaited video ! I am always thrilled to see your thumbnail pencil sketches ! They always blow me away 😃! Your explanations are always simple and to the point which makes me remember them ! Thank you, Ian for another instructional painting video. Watching you paint and hearing your description of the drawing and painting process has helped my art work tremendously! I'm looking forward to your last video of 2022! Merry Christmas.
There are a bunch of artist channels on youtube. But I really like yours. I like it so much I ordered your composition book. Looking forward to receiving it and then applying it. Thank you.
Hi Ian, I really like this simple composition. I often forget to block in with a larger brush. I have the larger brushes, just don't always use them. lol You're giving me inspiration. Thanks for such a great demo.
Amazing video Ian! It perfectly shows how to simplify shapes and paint a beautiful piece because the bones are perfect. So much to learn! Thanks for your videos and for your wonderful book Mastering Composition. It is one of my favourite ones ❤
Thank you for all your videos. I've become a better artist, better than I ever thought I could. Just gotta believe in yourself and realize it's a learning process
I tried making a pre-painting drawing before looking at yours, and was pretty happy with the similarity - but I do need to ensure that the light parts stay light; I put too much detail on the house. I'll keep practising!
Fabulous video. Thanks so much for all that information. I haven’t touched my oils in a long time…preferring water media…. But you’ve inspired me. It’s now on my after Xmas bucket list. You have a great way of explaining things and showing them with such simplicity. I have not yet chosen a patron to support but I think you might be the one.
Hi Cat, I'm delighted you enjoyed the video. I'd never say anything against water based media, but I love the feel of oils, on the palette and on the canvas. My very best wishes.
Oh I love your tips. I’d forgotten about this simplifying the painting as I’ve more focused on mastering realism in all my painting endeavors. Thank you for sharing your valuable insight. Have a joyous holidays❄️☃️🎄😊
I use this technique when outdoor painting with pastels on a4 paper. I can't get small details so I just use shapes and colors and it usually goes very well
This was fantastic. Thank you Ian. I watched this video after grading my student's assignments and being tired of reading them; The video provided me with great solace. You are perfect in your techniques, mixing colors and doing the big shapes. I thought I could spend my time painting after this fall quarter, but I am given two graduate courses to teach in the winter quarter. Therefore, I must wait until the end of march next year to get some free time to paint.
Glad you found the video encouraged you. If not to paint now at least to know there will be time up ahead. All the best for a richly expressive 2023. All the best
Glad you enjoyed the video. I don't paint flowers that often. Nothing against it just somehow don't think of it. I'll see if I can do one one month. All the best
To my perception there is a free spirit and humbleness in your work that makes it a gift for the soul to watch (even from a sad screen). I have been practicing sketching mass values and I came across a concern: Is it possible to make two different solutions from the same foto reference (or same angle, if it´s plain air)? Like, for example in this photo, let´s say that instead of making the house your main subject, you want to bring all the attention to the rocks in the middle-ground instead. Thank you for your generosity, Ian.
I'm glad you liked the painting. Thank you. You can of course orchestrate where you want the eye to go in a painting. And have two different ideas from one photo. But for me those rocks are too close to us to be the focus point. We are drawn deeper into the image and so you would almost be fighting the image to make that happen. all the best

There are a bunch of artist channels on youtube. But I really like yours. I like it so much I ordered your composition book. Looking forward to receiving it and then applying it. Thank you.
You’re very welcome. I know you will find my book helpful. All the very best.
Thank you. You're a good art teacher hope to see you personally in the future. Nick Rodis portrait and modern artist from the Philippines.
Delighted you like the videos. Thanks Nick
Hi Ian, I really like this simple composition. I often forget to block in with a larger brush. I have the larger brushes, just don't always use them. lol You're giving me inspiration. Thanks for such a great demo.
Thank you so much Yan, and I'll be there! Have a nice week.
Thanks so much. You too Rivail
Thank you for repeating it again and again. I need it, but still it's very hard to do something on my own similar to this. You are the best!
You are so welcome Yelena. All the best
I could watch this Video many times over. So inspiring and informative on many levels. watching one of your Videos sends me back to the studio.
Thanks so much Miriam.
Amazing video Ian! It perfectly shows how to simplify shapes and paint a beautiful piece because the bones are perfect. So much to learn! Thanks for your videos and for your wonderful book Mastering Composition. It is one of my favourite ones ❤
Thank you so much. Delighted you enjoyed it
Thank you for all your videos. I've become a better artist, better than I ever thought I could. Just gotta believe in yourself and realize it's a learning process
That makes me so happy to hear.
Complimenti per la straordinaria semplicità. Grazie Jan 🎨👍
I tried making a pre-painting drawing before looking at yours, and was pretty happy with the similarity - but I do need to ensure that the light parts stay light; I put too much detail on the house.
I'll keep practising!
Thank you Ian so much to think about. Being able to watch the work on the palette is very useful.
Thanks so much Clifford
Love this video! I am struggling with some trees right now, and I am going to block in over them! Thank you!
Thanks so much. Glad you are finding it helpful Jennifer
I learn new things in every video you make. Thank you
You’re very welcome. Makes me happy to hear
Thank you for this lesson! I am guilty of trying to add every detail when painting and I hope to paint in this loose/free style in the future!
You are so welcome Mark
Fabulous video. Thanks so much for all that information. I haven’t touched my oils in a long time…preferring water media…. But you’ve inspired me. It’s now on my after Xmas bucket list. You have a great way of explaining things and showing them with such simplicity. I have not yet chosen a patron to support but I think you might be the one.
Hi Cat, I'm delighted you enjoyed the video. I'd never say anything against water based media, but I love the feel of oils, on the palette and on the canvas. My very best wishes.
Thank you. I appreciate you sharing this.

Oh I love your tips. I’d forgotten about this simplifying the painting as I’ve more focused on mastering realism in all my painting endeavors. Thank you for sharing your valuable insight. Have a joyous holidays❄️☃️🎄😊
Happy holidays to you!
YOu make it look & sound so simple. Im going to review my pictures & get started. Thanks again Terrific.
Thanks so much. Have fun with it.
Thanks Ian I always appreciate your teaching.
Thanks so much Holly
Thank you Ian. I look forward to your videos and was very happy to see it in my inbox this morning. Great advice and lesson!
You’re very welcome Marie. All the very best
youre a superb teacher and ofcourse a great painter..
I use this technique when outdoor painting with pastels on a4 paper. I can't get small details so I just use shapes and colors and it usually goes very well

Wow, you make it look so easy. Thanks for all the lessons. I keep on learning from you.
Thanks so much Astrid. Makes me happy to hear
What a wonderful demonstration! I love it. Thank you!!! The drawing set it all up! Im on it. Thank you!
Delighted you found it helpful
Thank you for your attention to detail in explaining thought and process. Very helpful!

Such awesome teaching. I would love to see you do videos on composition of floral paintings.
Glad you enjoyed the video. I don't paint flowers that often. Nothing against it just somehow don't think of it. I'll see if I can do one one month. All the best
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thanks so much! I would love to see your take on them. Best to you as well!
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thank you so much.
Superb video demonstration ... So much thanks! 🧡💚❤
Glad you liked it!
Terrific demo and painting, Ian! A must-do pause & design - I’m a big fan of your process! Your drawing/composition classes are gold! Thanks again!
Thanks so much Deb. All the very best
Great video and insights. Thanks a lot for sharing, Ian!
Thank you for your efforts. Your lessons truly teach the basic of art, vision and execution in simple artistic language.
