you have put into words something ive struggled with for years. you are an incredible teacher, probably one of the best art teachers on youtube. thank you for what you do!
Hi Ian ! Finally the day where you post a new video has arrived !! I am never disappointed with any of your videos so Thank you so much for that ! Your art is just sublime and that is what I love most about it ! The way you explain things in the simplest way is a gift very few tutors possess and it’s a blessing to have found your Channel ! I sincerely Thank You and I wish You and your lovely wife Anne the very best of heath and happiness . Warmest regards...Lorraine 🎨🤗
Extremely helpful video - this is a principal I tend to use intuitively and now understand why. Such a treat to have a second video this month and look forward to Nov 15th. Since you’ve gone to monthly versus weekly video sessions, it’s like a special gift to have something “extra” to look forward to. All the best to you and Ann.
I have a few questions that have been haunting me for a couple of years, and this feels like an appropriate place and time for it: - How do we make shadows more nuanced? - Why use different shades of green when painting skin? - I've been painting natural light on people and objects, but what about more intense artificial light - specifically, say, a campfire? How do we go about depicting that?
Boy those are three big questions to try and type out here. But short version. Go outside on a sunny day and spend some time looking, really looking at the color of shadows. (I have a youtube video on it - that title - so you can probably search for it in youtube). Whatever color is in the light, the color of the shadow is specifically attached to it. Try painting that from life, matching that relationship and it will make your shadows are nuanced as your lights. 2. Well if I don't see any green in the skin I wouldn't use any green so I'm not sure how to answer that. 3. You can of course paint using a single light source to get stronger shadows. Or like firelight. Again try taking some photos of a person with only one strong light source in a dark room and see if you can find something there to paint. Look at Georges de la Tour to get an idea. OK there you go. All the best.
I just purchased your "Mastering Composition" book (without the DVD ~ although I was hoping to secure it) . . . all because of these fantastic video tutorials you've been so graciously providing for us. I'm really loving this particular video . . . as I love the POP of color that seems to attract my eye to art the most. So thank you. One request - if I may? I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of before the vibrant colors are added and after. Might that be possible?
Hi Lacamas, I was thinking at one point of including one of his paintings as an example except that he really cranks those edges and I thought it might actually be a bit confusing to think you could try that right off.
This light phenomenon is one I've notice constantly in life and master studies- but despite seeing multiple lessons about this topic, your presentation is the first to make it 'click'! I feel much more comfortable applying this technique to my own work, now.
No joke, my jaw unhinged itself when you pointed out transition colors and demonstrated how they can be applied with thin strokes. As someone who started off with doing graphite drawings to learn how to block shadows, that's not a detail I would've noticed. Thanks for this!
I recently realized that I've been hesitantly puting colors next to eachother, even when there is contrast. I feel like this video was a missing piece. Youve explained it so clearly. Thank you!
Always nice to hear from you Ralph. All the best and yes as a water colorist you can do that leaving just a bit of extra room on the lit side for that line of color.
Thank you for this! I am going to watch it over and over until it is second nature. In all my art school years, plus numerous classes over the years, no one ever explained anything like this.
Great video Ian thanks so much I am going to try these techniques in my paintings! looking forward to seeing your next video in 2 weeks. Thank you for making these videos for us they are so informative and inspiring
Searching the internet I found your videos informative at a time when I needed inspiration, technical help and general creativity. Living in Canada on Manitoulin Island every corner has incredible views and trying to simplify a controlled painting can be difficult. Thank you.

Lovely to hear from you Lyn. Like I said on the video week, I always put the same colors in the same order on the palette so it is a bit like a pianist knowing intuitively and muscle memory where to go. All the best to you and Chip.

Hi Ian: I was at an impasse with a painting yesterday, watched your video this morning and immediately had some good ideas for what to do. Really appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness you put into your videos and this one was super helpful! This demonstration goes so far beyond just pointing out areas that work or don't work in a painting. Thanks for explaining (and demonstrating!) this particular 'why'
The thing is if you are seeing the palette you are seeing exactly the same colors as in this one every time. Some colors. Same order on the palette. All the best.
Thanks, Ian - for some reason, I haven't watched for a while: life took over! However, your video was most interesting and the plate looked really 3-dimensional and the colours were great and taught a lot. Looking forward to your next video. Jane / Oxford

Many thanks Ian. First Tuesday of the month is something I look forward to and I’m never disappointed. Thank you for your insights and demonstration. I can’t wait to try it out. And I’m spoiled this month with another instalment in two weeks! See you then.
This video is wonderful and very practically useful! I want to thank you specifically for putting effort into the captions as well. I have difficulty with auditory processing, and captioning helps me really understand what's going on. Automatically generated captions are better than nothing for me, but I will often have to stop and puzzle out the bits that are inaccurate. I really appreciate that you've gone through and matched the captions to what you know you said. That extra time and effort shows, and it makes a big difference for me.
Wow , Ian that is a great video , I love the use of transition colours , I look for them now in paintings and will explore this technique myself , can't thank you enough for your generosity in sharing your exceptional teaching/painting skill. Thanks again Craig
Hi Ian ,very helpful video as I am about to put the finishing touches to a landscape today.....was not aware of the transition colour...Thank You...Ken
Great job explaining and demonstrating transition colors, Ian. I am really looking forward to your Monument Valley trip. I haven't spent as much time in the area in the past couple of years, but I used to go there and photograph specific areas for future paintings. I'm running out of photographs so I guess a trip is coming up in my future. 🤔
Even though I paint in watercolor, I get so much from your teaching videos. I enjoy translating your tips into watercolor😍

Loved how that simple subject was transformed with the bold colors that were creative but not garish
You are so welcome Beth
Thanks so much Jan

Glad you enjoyed it Will
Great job explaining and demonstrating transition colors, Ian. I am really looking forward to your Monument Valley trip. I haven't spent as much time in the area in the past couple of years, but I used to go there and photograph specific areas for future paintings. I'm running out of photographs so I guess a trip is coming up in my future. 🤔
It's a long drive from LA but seemed well worth it once we got there. Probably hasn't changed much since the last time you were there. All the best.
Yes. Very helpful. Now I will practice it using watercolor. Thank you
Great. It works in any medium. You're very welcome
Interesting! I see bright edges when glaucoma attacks, never thought of using that experience in painting.thank you for your painting tip
I guess that is making positive use of some that is not ideal. Never heard of that before.
Thank you for this very helpful information 🎉😊😊😊
Thank you for clearly explaining the beauty of transition color. Amazing fauvist result.

You are so welcome Joanne. Thank you
I enjoyed seeing how the vivid colors enhanced your painting. Your work is subtle and your touch with the brush is delicate. Beautiful still life!
Thank you so much Ellen
