    Demos make all the difference in the world as part of the learning process. I can learn theory all day long but when I SEE it being done then learning becomes even more enhanced.

      I agree with the longer demos at least once a month - they are quite helpful. I often think that the 6-7 minute videos are a little too short - they seem more of introductions to topics. (I didn't want to scroll all the way down to the end to type this comment.) OH! Now I see I could have made my comment at the beginning, but I don't know where it would end up in the listing of comments.

      Hi Donald, thanks on your feedback on the length. It's true 6-8 minutes means crafting something pretty tightly on topic and letting all kinds of related ideas hung. I suppose until another later one. At the same time I hardly ever have time to watch something a good deal longer. What's that line about public speaking, close while they still want more. Not sure. All the best.

These videos are at the top of the ones most helpful. You stick to the point and don’t stray from the subject matter. Most helpful demonstrations! Thank you!

    So I'm not alone in everything I do and think about the painting process! I can take hours culling through photos until I find about 20 that I put into a folder for future painting consideration. And when I have lessons from an instructor that just don't "inspire" me, I push through and what do you know...I end up really liking the painting afterall. And better yet, I proved I could overcome and I learned how to do something I thought I couldn't. Great advice! You've encouraged me to just keep going on this journey.

    I really loved your comments on controlling the edges subservient to the overall goal of the composition. I think that is so often overlooked when you really need a chorus of techniques harmonizing towards one goal. Color, texture, shape and composition all singing together. Thanks for this great demonstration! This is one I’ll watch multiple times! Keep it up! Great work.

    I was enthralled with your way of mixing greens! I need to watch this over several times, hope I can save this! I noticed the composition , vertical , horizontal and diagonal , is Always on the right side of the canvas. Do yo , or can you put the vertical on the left, etc.? I don't see why not!

    • @pamelahulland8439
      @pamelahulland8439 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      According to Stefan Baumann, in western cultures, because we write from left to right, our eyes are comfortable going into the painting from the left and then rest on the right, other cultures such as Arabic who write from right to left have the opposite degree of comfort. It’s a natural progression from cultural training.

      Well, in next week's video the main center of interest is way on the left. Just to make the point, that I think it just depends on my reference material.

    • @mogauthier1000
      @mogauthier1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that because I’m left handed I have a tendency to put my focal point on the right hand side of my compositions. I have to be very careful because I also want to do the same with how the eye will enter a canvas.
      Thank you for doing this demo on greens. I was stuck with too few greens in my current painting.

    One thing I’m confused about is how to keep the residual paint on the brush from ruining the little blobs of color. Maybe it’s editing but you don’t appear to rinse your brush. Every time you grab a little yellow ochre for example you’re also leaving a smear of dark green. (Haha this is probably a “cleanliness” hang-up I have and the antidote is probably to “get messy!” ) Maybe I should try finger painting. 😬

    This Is wonderful, Ian. Artists are mainly right brained, as you know, and most of us learn by watching something being done in order to learn. My school days were a mess as I couldn't memorize anything and when History came around, I would be busy setting a scene with everything that was said and so basically, learned nothing!! I couldn't absorb the common word, I had to SEE IN MY MIND what the History teacher was talking about. I was in tears in every class as the teacher would get so far ahead of me that I couldn't follow him.. Since my time (the 60's in high school), they have discovered that everyone does not learn the same and I hope that has helped people like me who learn by watching how it's done and not by listening to how it's done. That is how I learned how to use a computer...I had someone come in and show me what could be done on a computer and then I just dove right into it and mastered it! So Kudos to you for this, and I hope you do many, many more demonstrations!! THANK YOU!!!

      HI Patricia, I always find them kind of frenetic and you loose the sense that the artist is in fact taking their time and being attentive to what they are doing. I think the idea of being slow and attentive while painting is important.

      @@IanRobertsMasteringComposition If you feel frenetic you certainly don't come across that way at all! I really love to see an artist painting in real time and observing how they put the paint down etc. You do a fantastic job and I am looking forward to seeing more in the future. Thank you so much!

    One of the best demos on mixing greens I have ever seen. Like the longer form demo, glad to have found you.
