When you run the Onkyo speaker calibration do you hear audio from the sub when it sends a test sound to th sub? If not you may not be getting audio to the sub, first I’d switch cables then maybe inputs on the sub if you have multiple inputs, then try the same on the Onkyo if you have multiple sub outputs. If you are getting sound during auto calibration you could also try setting your speakers crossover setting to 80Hz instead of “Full band”. That will send more bass signal to the sub.

One end of the cable goes to the AVR and that's ok, but why did you plug the other end, which goes to the subwoofer, right into the + (red)? Does it always go to + or does it depend on the subwoofer? I know if there is LFE on the subwoofer it goes there, but what is the rule if there is no LFE? Greetings and thanks. 👍
Thanks so much for the great video! One thing I'm a bit confused on is if you set your crossover in your receiver to 80, what do you actually physically set the knob to on the subwoofer itself to ensure it doesn't interfere with what you said in the receiver settings? Thanks in advance!
Set it above what ever setting you choose. For example if your receiver is set at 80Hz then set the subwoofer at 100hz that way you know the subwoofer is playing everything the receiver is sending.
There are two line in/ sub in inputs on your sub. Which one do you plug the cable into? Also, on my integrated amplifier I have two sub/ line out inputs. Which one do I plug the cable into at that end?
Great video. I’m confused about the left right ports on the back of the subwoofer. So I just need to use just either the left or right port? Right now I have a double headed rca cable running from the subwoofer to the Yamaha av receiver (RX-A780). Thanks for any help.
I have a 2 channel stereo receiver with A + B speaker settings and want to run a 2.2 stereo system. I have 2 subs on the way from a Black Friday sale and was wonder if I can run basic speaker wire into a Y connector then into the LFE or Line In on the back of the subs?
Thanks! Klipsch website says if you connect to BOTH sub inputs, that it doubles the input voltage which equals a 6dB boost in output. My amp has 2 sub outs. Can I just use 2 RCA's or do I need a splitter from 1 output to increase the bass?
Just came across your channel after looking for reviews on emotiva’s subs se12 se8 and started checking some of your content. Love how simple and to the point you explain everything. A+++++ Btw just bought 2 emotiva se-8 for my living room, completing my set up of a 3.2 Yamaha tsr-400 Emotiva t-zero towers Emotiva c-1 center 2 Emotiva se-8
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist okay cool thanks. I ended up just getting a y splitter. But I have learned so much through your videos already! If I'm going to be using a projector, when I hang it on the ceiling, do I just need an HDMI running from the receiver to the projector? That will handle all audio and video?
So in phase setting if I have four options in sub lik 0,90,270,360.. way should I keep.? And in avr if we set 60 for sub we should keep the same frequency in sub woofer also.?
0 should be fine for phase. Just make sure the sub’s cone is moving in the same direction as the remaining speakers. If it doesn’t then adjust the phase. I would move the sub’s crossover to “AVR” or something high that way there is no confusion on the crossover setting.
you only plug the red RCA cable in to the back of the sub? I have been using a Y adapter to plug in both white and red. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?
Thanks for your video .For Yamaha receivers YPAO sub level calibration it’s recommended that level post calibration should be around zero to 3 . after reviewing sub level in first calibration You can tweak sub volume by on second calibration to fall into the 0 to 3 range.
Both my cables are each 25' long. Am I going to lose any gains through use of the Y-adapter/cable runs to my 2 subs? The cables are super-high-quality.
This is kinda hard to answer via text but here it goes: Set your AV receiver to play stereo music as 2.1 and set the crossover frequency. Below the crossover frequency (80Hz for example) the Avr will send those frequencies to the subwoofer output.
Did you watch the video? You will need two rca cables of appropriate length and a splitter for said cables. Connect the splitter to one subwoofer output on the AVR, connect both subwoofers to the splitter. The reason being is auto room corrections do not independently set levels and eq for subs, they’re calibrated as if they are one subwoofer. The “.1” in “7.1” or “5.1” Ensure that both subs are plying at equal volume from your MLP using an SPL meter before calibrating them in the AVR.
Have you run the auto calibration and specified that a subwoofer is connected? If so, then run the auto calibration which should play a sub test tone. If it doesn’t play a test tone check your cable, you may need a new one.
If I don’t have the rca type connector just plane wire connection on my sub it’s older sub doesn’t have all the buttons like your sub. How do I connect to Onkyo receiver TX-NR626
My subwoofer has a dual cable white and red, should i plug both on sub and yamaha receiver?? My receiver shows two black ports , no sure if it goes there
Quick question.. I dont have a receiver.. but I wanted to know is it possible to hook my 8 inch theater solution to just my TV and let it power it that way or does it need more power to actually make the sub work... The sub have a "left and right" input and the cord you mentioned "male and female 2x.. the TV outputs have 1 Arc hmdi, 2 HDMI, 1 optical digital out: which is hooked to the soundbar... And components av 6 I believe..is it possible to run the left and right out of the components into the power based subwoofer left and right "in".. I turned it on and I don't here much of anything.. so what ever solution you have will be grateful..
I’m using the sonance 5.1 speakers connected to a denon 7.2 receiver. My friend gave me his Polk sub psw10, which I want to connect. How would I do that?
Hello 👋🏼 how do I connect the tv and my receiver to be able to see the settings on my tv screen. 🙆🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️. I have a Yamaha with 5 hdmi and an arc Thank you
Hmmmm that's a good question........ the AVR should be passing the video signal right through so you should be able to see the TV menu without issue. Try a different HDMI connection and cable. I'd try HDMI ARC first. Hopefully this helps. 😀
Assuming a person is using identical subs, the settings for multiple subs should be the same. The one exception is possibly volume but otherwise there the same. The purpose of multiple subs is to get even bass response throughout the room regardless of seating position. With a single sub there can be dips in the response due room geometry, furniture placement, etc. So properly placing multiple subs can even out the room modes and allow multiple seating positions to have the same level of enjoyment. Hopefully this answers the question.
I have an issue where for content say regular TV where there is no DTS 5.1 track like there is on blu rays which sound fine, the audio has far less bass and the sub seems to kick in and out i can hear the click off when more bass comes in to the signal. is there a way to get more of the signal in to the sub by default for this kind of content. or is this just a crossover setting on the amp to increase?
You could use a y adapter that has 3 male connections similar to the one in this link: amzn.to/3jOwYka. FYI, this is an amazon Affiliate link so I receive a small commission if you decide to purchase.
Home Theater Hobbyist I have this stereo receiver Sony STR-DH190 2.0 Channel Bluetooth Stereo Receiver w/ Phono Inputs www.amazon.com/dp/B078WFDR8D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_02OvFbG4XXXRE is there a way I can connect 2 subwoofer. I don’t think that cable you sent me can connect 2 subwoofers.
For the Subwoofer, the red and white input. From the receiver to the subwoofer dose it matter what input you plug in to? Why is there 2 red and white input I'm back of the subwoofer?
If you have a total of 4 connections on the back of your sub (2 red and 2 white). One set of connections is inputs from the receiver. The other set is outputs to connect another sub.
You didnt explain the RCA connections and why there are two outputs and two inputs but you only connected it to one surely the bass signal is not the same on both outputs plus what happens if you connect both RCA connections. Is the signal out form the amp at line level and can you explain what LFE is
Very nice video and help me to understand the phase and low frequency Q. I have a receiver with 1 woofer out and a bash 300s amp plate how connect 2 woofers to the amp plate?? Parallel or series? Thanks
Measuring 2 subwoofers by hand. If your AVR auto calibration software supports 2 subwoofers then use that. But I'm guessing yours doesn't so here are the steps: 1. Use a sound (SPL) meter set to "C" weighted, “slow” response, range set to at least 80db. 2. Use your AVR for pink noise or find a pink noise source 3. Place your SPL meter in your main listening position at ear level and turn on the pink noise for each subwoofer 4. Is your meter reading 75db? Yes? Excellent, move to the next subwoofer and repeat. If it isn’t adjust the subwoofer volume to meet 75db at the meter. A few tips: 1. While you’re doing this it’s a good idea to check the levels on your other speakers to ensure they hit at least 75db. Speaker volume can be adjusted in the speaker level section of your AVR. 2. You may like your subwoofer/other speakers to be louder or softer it’s a personal choice but 75db is the HT standard. Typically I raise my center channel 1-2db so dialogue is easier to hear. 3. You can move the meter to each seating position and repeat this process to better balance the sound but that will raise/lower the volume at your main listening position. Hope this helps!
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thank you so much for this detailed explanation, will get SPL meter and try it. I have a Onkyo TXNR676E receiver and it says 7.2 but unfortunately cannot calibrate 2 subwoofers
Good video. Couple criticisms: 1. Audio was too low ... even missing at times. 2. You didn't show where to actually connect the RCA into the sub... just said, "connect it here "... and never showed where it was connected. 3. Main + LFE means different thins w diff companies... a caution should have been thrown there. Otherwise, excellent presentation.
when you initially plugged the cable into the sub and the receiver, you said "you plug it in there, then you plug it in there"... there are two inputs under SUBWOOFER on my receiver. which one does it go in?
hi i have denon avr-3500h, and want to get a bowers and wilkins DB3B SUBWOOFER, which is a dual driver sub, it has a L and R PHONO connection, and the denon amp has a L and R, Does that require me to connect 2 sub cables to its L and R phono
I don't think you'll need to connect both. The easiest way to determine what you needs to be connected is: connect both connections, play a track with bass that you know (a bass frequency like 40Hz will work). Stop the track, (disconnect power) remove one connection. Play the same again and see if you hear any difference.
Another helpful video. Thank you. On your advice I picked up a Monoprice Monolith 10 to replace my Polk DSW Pro 400 (failed power supply) and I've been fiddling around with the settings since it arrived yesterday. I set the crossover to 120 on the AV receiver even though my Polk Rm8 satellites bottom out at 130. My Onkyo receiver would not allow me to set it at 130, only in increments 80,100, 120, 150 and so on. I set it to the closest I could find (120). I guess my question is actually 2-fold. Does the crossover setting on my AV receiver override the knob controls on the back of my monolith? Also, would it be better to set the crossover higher than the 130 bottom end of my satellites, or slightly below.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Love it. More pop to it than my old Polk Subwoofer, but also not too much to cause problems with our common wall neighbor. Just broke it in with 4k Star Wars and gave it a good test run. So, if my satellites have a frequency response of 130-20k Hz, I should set the crossover at the closest increment above that? On my AV receiver my 2 options that range are 120Hz or 150Hz. Right now I have it set to 120, but that seemingly leaves a gap. Should I bypass the AV receiver settings and just turn the crossover knob to about 135-140 or do you think the 120 or 150 setting on the AV receiver would be better?
I’d go for the 150 on the Avr. You could also look around online and find some bass frequencies around 120 and 150 hertz, listen to them at the difference set points to determine which you prefer. Here’s a link to the Hsu research website that has test tones. Scroll to near the bottom of the page to find them. www.hsuresearch.com/faq.html
Great video! Something i didnt understand.. I got the Denon-X4500H, which has 2 subwoofer outputs. If I'm using 2 subwoofers, why can't I plug each subwoofer to the respective slot 1 and 2? I'm planning to get dual Klipsch SPL 150s and they got L channel and R/LFE. Normally, you connect your 1st subwoofer like explained in this video, but what about the second one? AVR has 2 sub slots in it and even if I use the 2nd slot on the AVR, does the other end of the cable still go to R/LFE on 2nd subwoofer? or how does it exactly work? And my other question is about the phase. Should I use the same phase for both subwoofers, even if they are at opposite direction? (1x front wall, 1x back wall). Thank you!
To answer your first question, yes you can and should use the 2nd sub connection on your AVR if you can. To answer the second question, yes they should be in phase.
Finally a video on using multiple subs that is actual informative and not filmed with a smudged cell phone camera. One question...one of my subs uses speaker wire and the other uses the connection you showed (the one you can get as a "Y" splitter), I already have one connected but I'm not sure how to connect the one that uses speaker wire. Any suggestions? I have a Yamaha RX-V679BL
I found this on Amazon and it could work but I haven't tried it. You connect the RCA end to your receiver and the other end to the sub. Hope this helps!Full disclosure this is an affiliate link so I will get a small commission if you put this cable. amzn.to/2QGkZHC
Great video. I am wondering if it matters which socket you plug the cable into. Are red and white effectively the same? I have seen Y-cables that split the connection. Would that make a difference? Thanks :)
The cables themselves are the same just carries a signal. The different colors red/white just helps identify which cable is which. In a subwoofer most of the time they are the same but you can try them one at a time to verify.
Hi, I have exact duel subs and a 7.2 amp. Do I need only a single cable to each sub or use a splitter and cable to each sub. My subs only have a red and white connection. Do I set the crossover on one sub to 0 and the other to 150 htz or just let my amp to do the work. I have an Onkyo 767. Thanks
Since you have 2 subwoofer outputs on your Receiver you can use those. Use a single subwoofer cable for each subwoofer out then connect it to the white input on each of your receivers. Set the crossover on each sub to 80hz then set your receiver crossover to 80hz as well and you should be good to go! Hope this helps, enjoy!
I have two cables that have two male connectors that I can connect the red and the white on my subs. Should I do that or just connect one cable to the white input on each sub?
I didn't know if my Onkyo 676 had a build in LFE for the white port for movies and the red port was for music base. I have KEF Q100's for my front mains and they are not known for their base so I wanted to use my subs to add base to them for music. If I connect the cable to both the red and white on both subs I thought I would have both bases covered. I didn't want LFE only. I could select base and mains, in my receiver and get music and LFE. I think?
I have a Denon avr 591.....it shows a front height / surround back to where I can add an extra set of speakers.......but I need a 2 channel amp,......any recommendations?
Check out Emotiva, they have good amps at great prices! I reviewed the A-500 (th-cam.com/video/T5jIBWow3A8/w-d-xo.html) a few months ago and enjoyed it, the A-300 is a 2 channel amp and would probably work well for you, here's a link: bit.ly/2LdF88y This is an affiliate link by the way

There are two line in/ sub in inputs on your sub. Which one do you plug the cable into? Also, on my integrated amplifier I have two sub/ line out inputs. Which one do I plug the cable into at that end?
Either connection should work, if it doesn't try the other. Mono signal is fine for a subwoofer.
Very useful info. I learn more with your video, Thank you
Thanks, your explanations are basic though helpful and done in a very calmly manner.
Thanks
This sub didn't have a hypass rca output so if hooked to a preamp output the main speakers will still be playing full range?
Great video. I’m confused about the left right ports on the back of the subwoofer. So I just need to use just either the left or right port? Right now I have a double headed rca cable running from the subwoofer to the Yamaha av receiver (RX-A780). Thanks for any help.
Typically I use just one but if you have a dual ended cable it should work fine.
This guy knows how to explain👍
Great video. Very helpful too. Was just doing some research on when to set my speakers to small vs large. This video helped clear that up. Thanks.
Glad to help! Enjoy the new setup
I have a 2 channel stereo receiver with A + B speaker settings and want to run a 2.2 stereo system. I have 2 subs on the way from a Black Friday sale and was wonder if I can run basic speaker wire into a Y connector then into the LFE or Line In on the back of the subs?
I don't think so, I'm not aware of a speaker level to line level connector.
Atleast someone that explained this well and helpful
Glad to help!
Thanks! Klipsch website says if you connect to BOTH sub inputs, that it doubles the input voltage which equals a 6dB boost in output. My amp has 2 sub outs. Can I just use 2 RCA's or do I need a splitter from 1 output to increase the bass?
I’ve never tried using two amplifier sub outputs on one sub so I’m not sure, sorry.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Thank You!
Should you keep the reciver on LFE alone or LFE + Main ?
LFE is best. LFE + Main sends a bass signal to your speakers set to "Large" but I wouldn't put the extra stress on your AVR as it's not necessary.
Best explanation for the novice. 😊
Thanks for watching!
Great job explaining the connection process👌
Thanks!
Just came across your channel after looking for reviews on emotiva’s subs se12 se8 and started checking some of your content.
Love how simple and to the point you explain everything. A+++++
Btw just bought 2 emotiva se-8 for my living room, completing my set up of a 3.2
Yamaha tsr-400
Emotiva t-zero towers
Emotiva c-1 center
2 Emotiva se-8
Probably silly question but why did you choose the "R" input on the subwoofer and not "L"? Does it matter which one you choose?
It doesn’t matter, either should work just fine.
I have the Denon avr 740 I think it is and you just answered a lot of questions I had specially about how to hook up the base
Great job. You focus on the message. Well done.
I appreciate that!
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist oh k thnks
you only plug the red RCA cable in to the back of the sub? I have been using a Y adapter to plug in both white and red. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?
Plugging in both red and white should be just fine. 😁
Thanks for your video .For Yamaha receivers YPAO sub level calibration it’s recommended that level post calibration should be around zero to 3 . after reviewing sub level in first calibration You can tweak sub volume by on second calibration to fall into the 0 to 3 range.
Ok thanks!
Thanks brah, super helpful video. Nice and to thd point, and you cover everything.
Glad it was helpful!
By using a Y adaptor from the Receiver mono line output, do you hear any loss in loudness of the Subwoofer ?
I haven’t
Both my cables are each 25' long. Am I going to lose any gains through use of the Y-adapter/cable runs to my 2 subs? The cables are super-high-quality.
I don’t think so.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist ~ Thank you!
Best video on subwoofers. Thank you.

Can you connect from sub out to aux cable ?
Very well explained and put together video thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video sir. Does it matter where i plug my rca cable coming from the receiver into the subwoofer do i use the white or red input
You can use either one, red or white.
So how would you have the sub work while playing music because music is not coded with LFE ?
This is kinda hard to answer via text but here it goes:
Set your AV receiver to play stereo music as 2.1 and set the crossover frequency. Below the crossover frequency (80Hz for example) the Avr will send those frequencies to the subwoofer output.
Great vid, in 10 minutes all the info that is needed 🙂👍.
Thanks 🙏🏾
I have a Sony Av receiver with 2 subwoofer connections. I also have two subwoofers. What cables do I need to buy to connect them?
Did you watch the video? You will need two rca cables of appropriate length and a splitter for said cables. Connect the splitter to one subwoofer output on the AVR, connect both subwoofers to the splitter. The reason being is auto room corrections do not independently set levels and eq for subs, they’re calibrated as if they are one subwoofer. The “.1” in “7.1” or “5.1”
Ensure that both subs are plying at equal volume from your MLP using an SPL meter before calibrating them in the AVR.
Great video! But I dont get any sound from my sub?! It appears like its not recognized by the system
My receiver shows two black ports , no sure if it goes there
What is the proper name of that subwoofer cable? Can’t find one in stores so will have to go online for it.
Often called, subwoofer Y-adapter or subwoofer Y-cable. Here's a link: amzn.to/3IZPCn7
Quick question.. I dont have a receiver.. but I wanted to know is it possible to hook my 8 inch theater solution to just my TV and let it power it that way
or does it need more power to actually make the sub work...
You should connect the psw10 lfe input to the receiver sub out then run the denon auto calibration. Hopefully this helps!
how do I set up a powered speaker? you have nay advice
Can I use a Y RCA 1 male to 2 male to hook up my subwoofer to my Sony receiver? It has the same sub ports as the receiver you’re using
Yes this should work
I really want a review about differences about put two subwoofers in front with two in front and back. Settings, positioning, sound quality...
Thank you very much for this extremely helpful and informative!
Thanks
I have an issue where for content say regular TV where there is no DTS 5.1 track like there is on blu rays which sound fine, the audio has far less bass and the sub seems to kick in and out i can hear the click off when more bass comes in to the signal. is there a way to get more of the signal in to the sub by default for this kind of content. or is this just a crossover setting on the amp to increase?
What if my stereo receiver only has 1 set of Line out port. How would I connect duals subwoofers ?
You could use a y adapter that has 3 male connections similar to the one in this link: amzn.to/3jOwYka.
FYI, this is an amazon Affiliate link so I receive a small commission if you decide to purchase.

clear + concise = expert, thank you
One of the best compliments I’ve received! Thank you! 🙏🏾
Monoprice also sells great cables of all types
For the Subwoofer, the red and white input. From the receiver to the subwoofer dose it matter what input you plug in to? Why is there 2 red and white input I'm back of the subwoofer?
If you have a total of 4 connections on the back of your sub (2 red and 2 white). One set of connections is inputs from the receiver. The other set is outputs to connect another sub.
Great video and well explained. Just subscribed. 🙌😎
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Is there any particular reason the RCA cable was inserted in the subwoofer right insert?
No, either one can be used. If one doesn’t work for some reason just try the other.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thanks for the clarification!
Great work. More videos like this please.
Thanks!
You didnt explain the RCA connections and why there are two outputs and two inputs but you only connected it to one surely the bass signal is not the same on both outputs plus what happens if you connect both RCA connections. Is the signal out form the amp at line level and can you explain what LFE is
Great to actually have information conveyed well. thanks mate

Hi, HT hobbyist, any idea how to calibrate 2 subs pls
Measuring 2 subwoofers by hand.
If your AVR auto calibration software supports 2 subwoofers then use that. But I'm guessing yours doesn't so here are the steps:
1. Use a sound (SPL) meter set to "C" weighted, “slow” response, range set to at least 80db.
2. Use your AVR for pink noise or find a pink noise source
3. Place your SPL meter in your main listening position at ear level and turn on the pink noise for each subwoofer
4. Is your meter reading 75db? Yes? Excellent, move to the next subwoofer and repeat. If it isn’t adjust the subwoofer volume to meet 75db at the meter.
A few tips:
Good video.
Couple criticisms:
Either left or right will work.
hi i have denon avr-3500h, and want to get a bowers and wilkins DB3B SUBWOOFER, which is a dual driver sub, it has a L and R PHONO connection, and the denon amp has a L and R, Does that require me to connect 2 sub cables to its L and R phono
How do you like the monolith so far? Yes the receiver crossover setting will override the sub. I set my crossover just above a speakers lower limit.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Okay, and both inputs should be L for both subs? Or is it one L and one R? im sorry i'm new to this
All good, except you plugged the wire into the right (red) channel on the sub, it should have been in the left input if you are just using one cable.
Hi brother...your video really helps me...thx a lot dude
Happy to help!

Great information for the non-savvy
Glad it was helpful!
You can just connect the one wire either both reds or both whites
I reviewed the A-500 (th-cam.com/video/T5jIBWow3A8/w-d-xo.html) a few months ago and enjoyed it, the A-300 is a 2 channel amp and would probably work well for you, here's a link: bit.ly/2LdF88y
