This is a great discussion! I have done this myself many times! My comment does not really deal with the possibility of doing this or physical constraints, (amplifiers can handle this) but rather running room EQ on subs that react differently than what the EQ software is expecting. The room EQ software is written with the assumption that the output impedance of the amplifier (or sub-out) is matched to the sub input impedance in order to make the necessary adjustments to the gain (mostly) and to a (lesser extent) freq. response. By doubling, or quadrupling the number of impedance loads on a single sub output, and having no way to tell the software that it is driving into a smaller impedance could lead to incorrect settings. That's all. And, yes, I DO know what I'm talking about. :) 40+ years in audio.
The answer I can’t find is what to do with multiple subs on a Y splitter(s) (3, 4, or 5 or more) with Audyssey. Should we set their volume levels individually or set their gain together when Audyssey begins?
Of course it is. I can assure you there are plenty of them out of the 35,000 that subscribe to this channel. I want to be able to provide content for the novice to the audiophile.
You can also use a good quality RCA "Y" adapter at the subwoofer input by either piggy backing to additional subs or feeding a left and right. I like using those instead of y-cords.

For instance, an RCA cable from the Receivers to a wall plate I installed which then converts RCA to shielded Co-ax to another wall plate where the Sub is, then I convert it back to RCA and plug it in to the Sub. Should I avoid this and use grommets in my wall to ensure only a single RCA cable is used from end to end?

I have never found a use for Zone 2 so that is an area I’m not familiar with. So AVR to sub with speaker wire into line level inputs on the sub, then speaker wire from the sub to your two speakers.
I I have my dual sub outs split twice each....running 4 subs. I have gone as far as splitting 3 times to run 6 subs. Works perfectly with very little signal voltage loss. Thanks Youthman, another good video where my heart is.. the subs. SVS uses directional cables. Is this snake oil? You have one arrow going away from source, and in plugging your sub up the arrow goes away from the sub. Usually this means one end is grounded, the other is not. Which way is the arrow supposed to point on these cables?
I am not certain but I made a video awhile back and mentioned the directional arrow on the SVS cables and many said it wasn’t necessary. My thought is it takes no extra effort to connect them according to the arrows so why not. I just wouldn’t pay extra for “directional cables”
@@Youthman Called SVS spoke with Scott. You are correct. The arrow goes from the source of the sound away. So the arrow will point TO the sub.. but in the case of a CD player, it would point to the receiver. I asked if it really mattered, he stated only if your getting feedback would he really worry about it.
If you don't have ground hum don't worry about it, if you do the problem is in the AC side, NOT the signal cable. Lifting one end will solve the problem, but like I said, that's NOT the cause..
amazing tip Youthman. thank u. i am currently using Denon 2113 receiver which is 7.1 ch. my sub is Yamaha nw sw100 which has 5 ohms impedance. shall I buy one polk psw10 and connect it using the Y splitter? i know you have told we can but I hav a doubt about the impedance ... your help is much appreciated ... thank you 😊
Youthman thank u so much bro. currently I have only one Yamaha sub. i am planning to buy polk psw10 after watching your video :) after few months I will replace Yamaha with the same Polk ... is that ok ??
Only half way through your vid so far, but... Please remember that paralleling two subs from one output halves the input impedance of the two subs. This can have dramatic effects on the response and performance of both subs.
Finishing the vid... Paralleling four subs would be even worse. Typically, each sub input is ~50K ohms - to operate correctly (and match the O/P impedance of the amplifier) Two sums in parallel would half that to 25K ohms, and those in parallel with two more would be only 12.5k load on a 50K output - a bad mismatch. No?
Hi Gary, this is the first I have ever heard of that scenario. I would need to do more research. I have never heard someone suggest using a Y is a negative thing. Will research and report back
@@Youthman Excellent! - I am not an engineer, but engineers I work with are quite concerned about matching input and output impedance between one device (circuit) and the next. A lot of speaker and amp spec. sheets will list the devices input or output impedance for a particular input or output. Look over your component spec sheets and know that resistances in parallel divide (and resistances in series - a rarity in audio), add.
This was my first thought, I come from car audio and impedance is very important. Take an ohm meter and double check your impedance level in all scenarios

Youthman ok great! I tried to daisy chain two Klipsch R-120sw for the front but it looks like one woofer hits harder than the other that’s why I wanted to add another splitter. I also have a sub in the back row. Thanks for the help 🙏
Although this video was one of the best, if not THE best, at showing the How to for multi-sub connections... one simply cannot make multi-sub connections without also taking into account where each Sub will be placed -and- how their given AVR / Preamp Processor handles each of the Sub 1 and Sub 2 outputs. In other words, one must address Volume, Distance and Phase for each Sub connected / placed in their HomeTheater. And the above has nothing to do with Subwoofer EQ'ng, or Room correction, or REW, etc. For even if one chooses to not do Subwoofer EQ'ng / Room correction, one still must get Volume, Distance, Phase and Placement of their subwoofers correct. How they're 'connected' is most often dictated by all of the above considerations, and not the other way around. Yes, another video for sure..., however I wanted to throw this out there just in case some folks take away - "all that there is to it" is a couple of connections and I'm done. Sorry, but far from it if you want it done right and sounding good / correct.
@nathankettlwewll3859 correct. The only issue may run into this time alignment because the AVR sees and will EQ two of the subwoofers as a single subwoofer.

Hi Franklin, when my son was 12 years old, before he jumped off a 40’ cliff, I was explaining how he could make the jump safely and while I was in mid sentence, Jacob looked at me and said, “Dad...go BIG...or go home!” And with that he jumped. Well by right, yes it is a signal, but due to splitting, the current in the sub cable might drop and therefore increase the volume from the receiver, but since it is 1 out to 2 subs, in fact, it would be very loud at certain positions and would increase. So according to you, they may cancel out for normal/expected performance.(Depending on room setup)
Also before people start poo-pooing Y-cables for hurting output, you'll only see the equivalent of a 3db change which is just barely perceptible by the human ear. Doesn't matter if you're using balanced or unbalanced cables. Math is math and crack is whack.
3db is 50% more volume. By this rationale the SB13 ultra is not louder than an SB16 ultra? They are less than 3db different averaged across the board. It makes a huge difference.
@@MusclesAVS 3db is not 50% more volume, 3db is defined as the minimum change in volume that the average ear can perceive... That said, 10db is perceived as "a major volume increase" Youthman is correct in saying that while there is a 3db drop after the split, it can EASILY be compensated no for...
@@poserwanabe really? There is less than 3db difference between almost all SVS subs. You can't tell a difference? Adding a second sub adds 6db and it is a huge difference. In subs it makes a big difference, 3db is very noticeable.

Only way to know what is going on in your room is using REW and a calibrated mic to see what’s going on. Then you can use a miniDSP 2x4HD to fix some of the issues and get a flatter frequency response
Youthman The funny thing is that with music it sounds good, and i have only play the movie infinity war and that’s when i notice the booming bass. As of today the mic its still not available. So any help would be great in the meantime.
When are we gonna see your JTR sub conclusion video? Why didn't it perform well compared to the SVS and Monoprice subs?
The sub was shipped back to JTR for additional testing so it might be awhile before I am able to get it back in for review.
I’m running 2 subwoofers in my living room and both of them are cranked up but they are setup for good bass on my receiver so they hit hard but won’t blow
This is what I needed to no. How to hook up 4 subs ! Thank you .
Youthman, are going to conduct a demo on the PC series subs by SVS? I would to get your take on the coverage area it produces....
Hi Michael, I have not had any plans to review the PC series. I’m working towards getting some new brands in for review since I have a ton of videos on Klipsch and SVS just to diversify a bit.
Check out Life of Bliss channel. He has a PC in for review
@@Youthman Got it... Thank you...
This is where I get lost. I had 2 paradigm ultracube 12’s. Moved to a new home and starting a new set up. Upgraded to a pair of SVS PB 3000’s. Getting to run Dirac tomorrow, but though I could also wire in my ultracube 12’s in the rear of the room. Not sure how to make them all play nice together. 🤔🤔
If your AVR does not have 4 independent Subwoofer outputs, I would recommend a miniDSP 2x4HD. You will also need a calibrated mic and REW.
When running 2 subwoofers how do you get true left right sounds with them? Or is it not possible?
Most of the time you won’t because the dual sub outs on most receivers or preamps are the same content.

I connect them in the direction of the flow of the signal (AVR to Sub)
@@Youthman Called SVS spoke with Scott. You are correct.
The arrow goes from the source of the sound away. So the arrow will point TO the sub.. but in the case of a CD player, it would point to the receiver. I asked if it really mattered, he stated only if your getting feedback would he really worry about it.
If you don't have ground hum don't worry about it, if you do the problem is in the AC side, NOT the signal cable. Lifting one end will solve the problem, but like I said, that's NOT the cause..
poserwannabe exactly. I don’t think it will matter as well
Thanks man
I needed that info.
Does the XLR connections really necessary or worth it?
I have not done any A/B comparison but in all of the research I have done, it’s mainly for long runs and to prevent or reduce interference / hum.
If you do not get a hum in your sub, I don’t see much benefit of switching to XLR
@@Youthman thanks much
Your home theater must sound amazing...
amazing tip Youthman. thank u.
i am currently using Denon 2113 receiver which is 7.1 ch.
my sub is Yamaha nw sw100 which has 5 ohms impedance.
shall I buy one polk psw10 and connect it using the Y splitter?
i know you have told we can but I hav a doubt about the impedance ... your help is much appreciated ... thank you 😊
My advice would be to upgrade the Yamaha and go with something besides the Polk. Even if you buy used, you can get a lot of bang for your buck
Youthman thank u so much bro.
currently I have only one Yamaha sub.
i am planning to buy polk psw10 after watching your video :)
after few months I will replace Yamaha with the same Polk ... is that ok ??
Only half way through your vid so far, but...
Please remember that paralleling two subs from one output halves the input impedance of the two subs.
This can have dramatic effects on the response and performance of both subs.
Finishing the vid...
Paralleling four subs would be even worse.
Typically, each sub input is ~50K ohms - to operate correctly (and match the O/P impedance of the amplifier)
Two sums in parallel would half that to 25K ohms, and those in parallel with two more would be only 12.5k load on a 50K output - a bad mismatch.
This is not a problem at all in a normal setup. Stop woring about things you dont understand.
This was my first thought, I come from car audio and impedance is very important. Take an ohm meter and double check your impedance level in all scenarios
Wire is good but what about setting up receiver?
I like you as your easy to listen to 👍🏽
Thank you.
Youthman your AWESOME 😎
Thanks
Nice.
Thanks for making it simple.
God Bless
Glad you enjoyed it
Stupid question alert: does mini dsp make a unit that can work with xlrs?
what if you use speaker wire
The only reason to use speaker wire is if you have a really old subwoofer that does not have RCA inputs
Youthman
I have some passive subs im trying to get working
avc-x3800h has 4 sub outs. Can't I just plug in two subs without these complicated cable connections? Edit: Okay, when I read the readme it says you just plug in 4 subs and need to activate them in settings.
Great video

Damn!! Did this man stack his Klipsch Subs behind his screen to create 2 Super Subs at one time?
Yes I did. Stacking gives you 6dB gain per stack so I had 12dB gain by doing so.
Youthman never thought of that! Thanks for the reply. Is ok to add multiple y splinters on the back of the receiver without degrading the audio quality?
Absolutely. You don’t want to have thirty but if you had a Y splitter for both sub outs on your receiver to connect 4 subs that’s totally fine
Youthman ok great! I tried to daisy chain two Klipsch R-120sw for the front but it looks like one woofer hits harder than the other that’s why I wanted to add another splitter. I also have a sub in the back row. Thanks for the help 🙏
So what if you have 2 sub pre outs
And want to run 4 subwoofers
I actually explained that scenario in the video 😀
That’s exactly what I had when I was running 4 Klipsch RSW-15’s
@@Youthman i only have the 2 outs on my Yamaha RX-Z9

Hey what about 4 subs on 2 sub outputs
Best method is to use a miniDSP 2x4 HD so you can independently time align and EQ them. Some new AVR’s have 4 independent sub outs.
You could use a Y splitter on one sub out for your front subs and a second Y splitter for the rear subs.
@@Youthman oh, yeah I thought it worked like that so all I have to do is put 2 Y's in the amp then run 4 separate RCA's to the 4 subs?
@nathankettlwewll3859 correct. The only issue may run into this time alignment because the AVR sees and will EQ two of the subwoofers as a single subwoofer.
@@Youthman ahhh I see
great video.....
Thank you

What if your receiver only has 1 input ?
1 input? Do you mean output? If so, just use an RCA Y splitter
@@Youthman It has 1 L and 1 R which the R is being used by my phone with a male to two females. yo love the channel and the content, but you always go big. Need some small speaker or soundbar atmos setups
Hi Franklin, when my son was 12 years old, before he jumped off a 40’ cliff, I was explaining how he could make the jump safely and while I was in mid sentence, Jacob looked at me and said, “Dad...go BIG...or go home!” And with that he jumped.
My channel focuses on mid-tier products. Trust me, there are WAY BIGGER products than what I review. $90,000 speakers, $6000 subwoofers, $12,000 processors.
The reality is I will never be able to review all of the products in the mid-tier category, much less the entry level products.
I don’t see myself reviewing a sound bar though.
Thanks for watching!

Its a awesome video dont get me wrong. But when u do these type of videos we what to hear it to. It after all a home theather channel. And what a home theather without sound :)?
I know TH-cam destroys the sound but se still put om the headphones and listen.
I have audio demos on the channel but I personally don’t see much benefit other than maybe entertainment value. There is no way to accurately share with you what I am experiencing in my room.
I am not following your logic
@@Youthman you do not have to, it ia meant to confuse you
👍
you don't want to be using a splitter that thin (it's not even RCA ) , i presume it's all you had to demonstrate a splitter.
I have lots of cables and interconnects including various splitters of different brand and gauge. Just grabbed one from the drawer for the video.
Tancyu
Also before people start poo-pooing Y-cables for hurting output, you'll only see the equivalent of a 3db change which is just barely perceptible by the human ear. Doesn't matter if you're using balanced or unbalanced cables. Math is math and crack is whack.
And that can easily be corrected by adjusting trim levels in the AVR. Thx!
3db is 50% more volume. By this rationale the SB13 ultra is not louder than an SB16 ultra? They are less than 3db different averaged across the board. It makes a huge difference.
@@MusclesAVS
3db is not 50% more volume, 3db is defined as the minimum change in volume that the average ear can perceive... That said, 10db is perceived as "a major volume increase"
Youthman is correct in saying that while there is a 3db drop after the split, it can EASILY be compensated no for...
@@poserwanabe really? There is less than 3db difference between almost all SVS subs. You can't tell a difference? Adding a second sub adds 6db and it is a huge difference. In subs it makes a big difference, 3db is very noticeable.
@@MusclesAVS
Don't make any assumptions about what I can and can't hear, I've made a good living with my ears..I was simply giving you a generally accepted definition...peace
